Katerina's has somehow become my go to pizza joint, and I think it's a direct result of their aggressive marketing campaign, and to a lesser extent, their hot wings. I feel like I always have a Katerina's menu lying around and it's on my mind when I think "pizza". Their pizza is pretty good, albeit a bit inconsistent. It ranges from very good to ok. Never bad and never excellent. I've thought about how they could improve their pizza, but have yet to put my finger on it. Also, it depends on the day. Somedays it's the sauce, other times it's the dough. The cheese is always pretty good, sometimes they could use more of it though. The hotwings, though, are outstanding. They're the perfect size, and always cooked well and they use a delicious buffalo sauce. I am not a huge wings fan, but they are excellent. I've had some other things too, but the only other thing that stands out are the french fries - they are thick and crispy, and they made pretty good cheesesteaks too. Katerina's uses stale, old, cheap ingredients. I am a former chef, so I should know. Our family has been disappointed with their food every time. It even made us sick once! To add insult to taste bud injury, Katerina's prices are very high for the minuscule amount of food received. Katerina's pizza tastes like cardboard, salt, styrofoam, and ketchup. And three of their extra large pizzas weigh less than half of one Sicilian pizza from Aldo's (we actually weighed them). Katerina's cheesesteaks should be called cheesegristles. They have cheap, imported beef that has so much gristle that it needs to be chopped into thousands of pieces just to be made edible. And the low-end rolls are almost flavorless, definitely not the amazing South Philly Italian rolls that I usually get with local cheesesteaks. Katerina's hoagies have those same low-end rolls and very little meat and cheese, which is a good thing because it is the awful $3 per pound supermarket kind. Katerina's salads have hairs in them. Their chicken products always have rancid, microwaved, frozen chicken that expired weeks ago, at least that is how it tastes. Their seafood is even worse! The staff is friendly but that fact does not come close to offsetting the horrible food. The good reviews must have been posted by relatives and/or foreigners who believe that boiled rat is a delicacy. If you still want to try Katerina's, first read their Food Safety Inspection Reports at the website of Philadelphia's Office Of Food Protection. I counted a staggering 58 disgusting violations within the last 18 months. Ew and yuck! Save yourself the disappointment and possible trip to the hospital emergency room. I've been living in this area for some time now and have yet to try this pizza shop until on this day. I was over my brothers with my daughter having a play date and they wanted pizza. So I used the Slice app to order some pizza and cheesesteak special that came with fries and a 2liter soda- it totaled around 26 bucks which wasn't too bad. Delivery on Slice is the worse! I could've drove there twice or even three times compared to how long it took my order to come. When the delivery person finally arrived the kids were so happy! It's pretty bad when the kids are constantly looking out the door and window looking for the pizza man! So the food case and the cheese steak was delicious- lacked with meat and tasted really good. The pizza was so/so and I wish it tasted better- we had a large pizza shared with the 3 1/2 of us- and my nephew who usually eat about 3 slices ate only one cause he didn't like the sauce on the pizza. Went to Katerina's Sat. to pick up an order for a birthday party. The gentleman who was celebrating his birthday found a large bone in his French fries and a large piece of metal in his pizza. Pictures were taken and calls and texts were sent to this place and a man got on the phone and was so nasty, didn't offer any apology, didn't offer any reimbursement, nothing. Stay away from this place. Shame on Katerina's, and Shame on Jay, who I talked to on the phone. He's telling me to contact the Board Of Health. Is he serious? I told him you're serving bones and metal in food, and you're not taking any responsibility. I am a long time customer of Katerina's and have ordered from them regularly (approx 3x. Week or more for more than 20 years. In all my years of being extremely satisfied with not only their food but their service, my terrible experience today was one for the record books! I ordered a sandwich platter and asked specifically that my bread me extra toasted (keep in mind the sandwich was supposed to come hot) not only do i live down the street (literally 4 blocks) from the pizzeria, the delivery comes...sandwich is cold, bread not toasted...and the bread doesn't even resemble the bread i was told the sandwich is made on. I call the pizza place to discuss my order. The original man who took my order answered the phone (he had an accent but clearly understandable) and proceeded to explain to me that he asked the person who prepped the sandwich not to toast the bread too much because it makes the sandwich look smaller. As i proceeded to explain to him that this isn't what i asked for, not toasted bread and a cold sandwich and how we could rectify the situation, he just sat there and replied "i don't know what to tell you..." I proceeded to explain to him that I'm a long term customer who orders from them regularly, this has never happened to me before and I would like a resolution to my order and that i would hate to never order from them again, he proceeded to tell me "i don't know what you want me to tell you, don't order from us again.." and hung up on me. Surely this can't be the owner...or was it?. In this day and age when we have so many options for food in the area, you would think that a business such as this would want to consider hearing the complaint of not only a long standing customer but someone who orders from them regularly multiple times a week. I want to say that the food was ready when I arrived at the restaurant that was the only good thing about my experience. We ordered 2 salads a pizza and fries. the pizza had no flavor. the salads were horrible. both salads were supposed to have grilled chicken the chicken they use was a pre sliced processed chicken that was warmed and put in the salads then they poured Italian dressing over the chicken to we guess give it flavor. so now we have that dressing in a creaser and a garden salad and neither of like that dressing so the chicken is inedible and the dressing ruined the rest of the salad. Since the new owner took over this place, I noticed many changes. First was the size. It seems like what used to be large pizza by the sizing of previous owner, now is extra large. Katerina's on Verree makes a delicious hoagie!! The roll is always freshly baked. Even when taking out my hoagie the next morning, it had a superior freshness to it. Portion size is more than adequate... the take out box is what my friend Michael aptly calls a bakery box. I would return to this establishment next time I am in the 19116 vicinity. Katarinas has always been our neighborhood go to place. We have now ordered twice during this stay at home order and the food has been terrible. The fries we ordered well done were practically raw. Seriously they were not even the light cooked color when not well done. The steak stromboli that we order all of the time was missing steak. A few chips of steak were in it. The fries with cheese had a tangy putrid taste that left a bad taste in my mouth and the kids spit them out. This is now the 3rd place where the quality of food has diminished in the last 6 weeks. Just wanted to put a good word in for Katerina's, they've been our go to place for pizza and wraps for a few years now. The white veggie pizza is quite yummy and their cheesesteak wraps are really good, less bread than a standard cheesesteak on a roll and just packed full of steak. And with the less bread that leaves more room in the tummy for their excellent French fries, don't know what they do to their fries but their a nice thick cut with a thin crunchy outside, wife and I love them. Oh and delivery is fast and the delivery guys are quite friendly also. Unless something changes for the worst Katerina's will continue to be our go-to place for the foreseeable future. read more
