I have a lot of food allergies: almonds, blueberries, dairy, eggs, gluten, and other ingredients, so when I saw that this was a vegan ice cream spot, I rejoiced! They have a great selection of flavors with similar texture to regular ice cream. I saw they even have ube but only sold in the pint. It blows my mind that some Asian foods, like ube, are mainstream now. I grew up eating ube, so I got really excited to find this gem here. I got two scoops--cherry chocolate cheesecake and blackberry lemon bar--in a cup. My daughter went for her favorite chocolate brownie with sprinkles and chocolate chips. My husband got two scoops--rose water cardamom and salted peanut butter brittle--in a cup. The scoops are big and the flavors are so good! I love that plant based doesn't mean you have to sacrifice the flavors. Great location. Fresh interior and nice air flow when it gets hot. They roll up the industrial garage door. Yum! Stopped in on a Saturday (in the rain) and had the place to ourselves. Place is super cute and the staff were really helpful. We sampled a bunch of flavors, all of which were great so I had a tough time deciding what to get. I ended up getting vanilla and creme brulee. Kate's is definitely my favorite ice cream shop in Portland. This shop is located on Mississippi so parking can be difficult but there is street parking. They let you sample their ice cream flavors and you can even do a split scoop if you'd like. We got the Rosewater cardamon pistachio - pretty good rode water and pistachio flavor with hint of cardamom, nothing overpowering. Really enjoyed it. If you're vegan or gluten free this is a great ice cream option. The flavors do taste pretty coconuty, probably because it's made with coconut cream. If you don't like coconut you might not like some of the flavors. I tried the brownie and cookie dough and both were good but I ended up getting the cookie dough. The mini is 5.25$ which is very overpriced in my opinion. It is the smallest "mini" I have ever seen at any ice cream store. It's for sure less than one scoop of ice cream. Incredible vegan ice cream I love being able to come here and eat everything and not have to worry about taking my lactose pills and worry about a bathroom nearby. Kate's Ice Cream is incredible, and I wish there were a fully vegan scoop shop like that close to me. There are so many different flavors every day, including some seasonal ones, and the people working there let us sample as many as we needed to decide on what to get (and they were all so good that it was a very hard choice). They also have some seating, which was good for us because we shared a triple scoop. The flavors we ended up getting were pandan (seasonal), marionberry cobbler, and cookie monster (a very blue ice cream with chocolate chip cookies and Oreos). All three were excellent, and my favorite ended up being my kid's choice - cookie monster. All the ice cream was so rich and creamy that I kept forgetting that it was vegan, and panicking that I forgot to take my Lactaid pills, before happily remembering that I had no need for them here. I would only have known it to be vegan at all! I'm impressed. I totally get the hype. This place is legit and they have wonderful flavors of variety. I came back 2 days later and got a MINI scoop of the BLUE MOON, which they say tastes like Froot Loops, which I it does! I love the color and and the texture is so delightful. Kate's is a revelation. My family has a mix of lactose intolerance and egg allergies so finding a fully vegan ice cream shop is always incredibly exciting. Every member of the staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and they all really seemed to enjoy working there which is always a good start. The store has a few freezers filled with to-go pints and treats, and there are a few tables and high top counters to sit at and enjoy your ice cream. As for the ice cream, there are not enough superlatives to describe how good it is. All three flavors we had were so rich and creamy that we often thought we needed to take our lactose pills before remembering that it was somehow vegan. There's a large table, 2 tables that could accommodate 2 people each, and a few bar stools. My favorite part as a lactose intolerant girlie, all the ice cream is plant-based! Tastes like totally "regular" ice cream with a large variety of flavors, and the texture is next level! Way better than "regular" ice cream. I got a mini scoop ($5.25) of Santa's cookies which is a seasonal flavor of gingerbread, vanilla, and sugar cookie. My sister got a regular scoop ($6.00) with a waffle cup (extra) of Marionberry cobbler which she said was the best scoop of ice cream she's ever had. I recently went to Kate's with my beloved. Kudo's for being all vegan. I got the Cookie Monster and orange creamsicle in a waffle cone. My beloved got salted peanut butter brittle and marionberry cobbler which were the two most popular flavors. She thought the ice cream was a bit sweet. I thought mine was quite good. I especially enjoyed the orange creamsicle. I actually enjoyed the cashew based DIY cookies and cream in Oakland better along with young coconut flavor coconut based ice cream in Oakland as well. Wow. I seriously couldn't believe that is vegan ice cream. It's some of the best I've ever had (vegan or not). I had to go for the Marion-berry since I was in Portland after all, but I enjoyed sampling their other flavors too (including the salted peanut butter brittle award winner). We have been coming to Kate's since it was just a cute little shop in a different location. Not a storefront. Now Kate's is on Mississippi, near lots of fun and trendy restaurants and shopping. Fresh strawberry, which is perfectly sweet, with just enough shortcake to not put you over the edge. It's delectable, divine and delicious. My kids have been SPOILED to grow up in the Portland area where we have access to such good vegan options but Kate's is hands down my favorite. I cannot believe this place has been here so long and I walked by it many times without realizing it was both an all plant-based AND gluten-free ice cream shop! I was beyond ecstatic upon discovering this and happily enjoyed a waffle cone for this first time in ages. Yes, all their cone options are gluten-free! And yes, ALL their ice cream & dessert options are plant-based and gluten-free! They have a LOT of flavors to choose from, and they always have a few seasonal flavors as well. The Hubs and I each had a waffle cone, and tried their seasonal flavors of Key Lime Pie, and Sweet Corn with Blueberry Jam swirl - YUM-O!! They also have ice cream cookie sandwiches, brownie sundaes, and ice cream pies. They have a freezer with pints & desserts you can take to-go and enjoy at home, too. I was also very impressed with their young staff being so friendly and upbeat, actually engaging in a conversation with us, asking about our day and what our plans were. The interior is lacking in decor and would benefit from adding a mural on the wall, but it's bright with seating inside, and a bench outside on the sidewalk. This was a wonderful find for us on Mississippi. My partner, being Celiac and unable to tolerate any gluten contamination, doesn't eat ice cream very often (amazing how many store bought ice creams have wheat products or are produced in wheat-heavy factories), and especially not from ice cream shops. The scoops going from gluten-laden cones to the tubs and back, always has the potential to get her sick. Scoops go into storage areas after touching cones and then come back out. That kind of thing just makes it safer for her to not even bother. She also is mildly lactose intolerant, as am I, so ice cream is tolerable, but can be somewhat unpleasant sometimes. When we found Kate's, my partner was super excited. We immediately went in. The staff were incredible, letting us try sample after sample. Our first trip we had a peanut butter brittle in a waffle cone with dark chocolate and sprinkles. It was incredible. Our second trip, with our kids, I had the salted butterscotch; also very, very good. A few tastes weren't very good to me, but that was more likely personal preference. Also, when I knew that it was made from coconut milk, I could tell my brain was looking for the coconut flavor underneath everything. But my kids didn't know the difference and it didn't take away anything from how enjoyable the ice cream was. It was a little spendy, but that makes sense for the quality of ingredients. That being said, the portion size is huge and one scoop is more than enough for me. I can't imagine one person having three scoops, but it sure would be an experience. As they do ice cream cakes, we expect to get an ice cream cake for my partner's birthday coming up in December, and she's very excited to have an ice cream cake for the first time since childhood. read more
