when i first got here, i didn't realize it was vegan. i kinda didn't really want to try it, but i wanted to give it a fair try and see how coconut milk ice cream would be. the best flavor i tried was the marionberry cobbler. i feel the berry flavor masks the coconuttyness of the cream and the crispy oat cobbler part really went well with it. if there's any flavor to try here, i think that's really the one. with the coconut base, the fruity flavors go really well!

Dairy free ice cream? Yes please! My lactose intolerance thanks you Kate. I visited in the summer and got to try the range of seasonal flavors before opting with to go with the peach crisp which I highly recommend! Light and fruity with a nice mix of oat crumble. And of course I couldn't say no to a fresh waffle cone!

Coming from Austin and not being vegan, I wasn't familiar with Kate's, but the ice cream here is genuinely great. I tried a seasonal sweet potato pie flavor and an ube flavor. Both were delicious and had clean, sweet flavors without any strong aftertaste, which can happen sometimes with vegan ice creams. The waffle cone is vegan too, and while bottom tip of the cone became more hard than crispy, I would still get the waffle cone again. They give free samples, and I love the double-sided sample spoons because it makes you feel less guilty about trying two flavors at once. The person who helped me was incredibly friendly and walked me through each flavor while I sampled. He explained the ingredients, what made each one unique, and which ones were seasonal. I ordered a split scoop in a waffle cone, and the portion felt close to a double scoop. Your mileage may vary, but if you're stuck between one scoop or two, consider the split scoop. A couple small tables inside and free self-serve water, although when I was there, most customers were taking their ice cream to walk with. Fantastic service, great flavors, and a fully vegan menu that even non-vegans will love.

Kate's Ice Cream is a plant-based and fully vegan Portland-based ice cream chain that was once voted the best vegan ice cream in the entire nation! This location is in Northwest Portland where there is street parking all around the area. Inside, they have a nice and cozy setup with a couple tables for seating. For their menu, they have a unique selection of different ice cream flavors to choose from. Wifey ended up getting the Marionberry Cobbler and I got the Orange Creamsicle. All of the staff very friendly and accommodating here. This is definitely one of the best ice cream shops in PDX!

This was my first time trying this ice cream shop, and it was great! The staff was friendly and offered me and my friends plenty of samples to try. Also inside is very cute with not a lot of seatings. I've heard Kate ice cream is known for their plant based ice cream flavors, and I was really impressed. They also use a lot of local ingredients, which is a great touch. Everything I tried was delicious, and I ended up going with the sweet corn and blueberry jam flavor. It was great although I did find it a bit too sweet after a while. Still, I'll definitely stop by again if I'm ever in the area!

I love everything about coming to this place. The ice cream is always so delicious and the sampling new flavors is so fun. The space is very cute as well lit, without the overwhelming lighting. Everything is gluten free and vegan!!! It's such a safe space for folks with a gluten allergy and makes me so happy because their cones are delicious. I make it a point to grab my ice cream on a regular.

It's vegan. Make sure you read that before going in (I know I did). I tried the ube and it was good but I landed on just what I wanted...the vanilla. You could kinda taste the difference but it was still pretty solid overall. The service was pretty quick. The kicker...they have flights!!!

On our mission to find vegan options in Portland (with a preference for 100% vegan places) we happened upon Kate's because of a sign outside. Visiting from LA, where we have been lucky to be close enough to Hug Life (now sadly closed permanently), vegan ice cream has a high bar but Kate's did it right! Really delicious, sad we don't have several stomachs so we could try every flavor!

Cute ice cream shop on 23rd. For vegan ice cream, it was really smooth and creamy. The cookie monster flavor has a light coconut flavor to it as does the ube! The coconut flavor pairs really well with the ube. While good, I do think it's a little expensive. I got the mini scoop and it was $5.25. My friends got the split scoop for $6 something which was a better deal as the scoops were a lot bigger and fairer.

Amazing vegan ice cream! They use coconut milk based for their ice cream. The texture is incredible and if I were blindfolded I wouldn't be able to tell it's vegan ice cream! The Cookie Monster flavor is great, but the Ube is by far my favorite. It's super rich and has a strong flavor. To get your money's worth, I recommend the split scoop for $6.25 which was basically two whole scoops. The mini scoop is very very small compared to the single scoop size.

Who knew plant-based and gluten free ice cream can be so good? The family stopped by after dinner for some ice cream. The staff were friendly and encouraged is to try different flavors. My kids opted for a scoop each of the triple chocolate brownie and cookie monster. My weakness is a good floral flavor ice cream and the rose water cardamom hit the spot. You can order your scoops by the flight, mini scoop, single scoop, solid scoop, double scoop, or triple scoop. You could also grab a point if your favorite flavor here too to bring home.

Kate's Ice Cream is ranked the best ice cream in Portland for a reason! Walking in the store I was nervous since I had high hopes and medium expectations. I went with a friend who knew more about the establishment and assured me the ice cream was just as good as everyone says. After looking at the options for a bit, the worker, who was genuinely so kind and helpful gave me some samples and aided me in selecting the perfect flavor for that moment. I took my first few bites of ice cream and I was sold. What a delicious and exciting scoop of ice cream that was. In addition to the delicious flavors in my mouth the space was cute, welcoming and appropriate for the amount and kinds of clientele who visited the store during my visit. Although it was such good ice cream I do try and limit myself to just a few visits per month since it feels more like a special experience than a casual spot. Thank you Kate!

During my Portland foodie tour, I stopped by Kate's Ice Cream and it was everything a dairy-free dessert lover could want! This airy, modern spot serves up plant-based & gluten-free ice cream that doesn't compromise on flavor or texture. As an ice cream lover, I was delightfully surprised! I went for a small scoop of the Strawberry--a classic done right, made with coconut cream and swirled with housemade Oregon strawberry jam. The flavor was perfectly balanced--creamy, slightly tangy, and naturally sweet, with real fruit shining through. The shop itself was bright, welcoming, and perfect for a casual treat. Whether you're dairy-free, gluten-free, or just looking for amazing ice cream to try, Kate's is a must-visit in PDX!

After drooling over their Instagram, I knew I had to go. To my dismay I arrived at something that…read moredidn't look like it was a cafe or even opened. I wasn't even sure I was at the right place, thought they were still transitioning from one location to another. Until someone who shared the kitchen popped out. I was told that I should order online and come by for pick up, and was strongly urged to do so because these cheesecakes were really good. When I saw that they were doing a contactless store front, I knew I had to go. This was my opportunity to try it. I texted the owner to ask if the flavor I had my eye on was available. I was halfway there before the owner responded that they had one slice of pandan cheesecake left. There are multiple forms of payment with a card reader, and various apps to pay with online which made this a breeze. The owner Kiana, even popped to introduce herself which I thought was so nice! The flavors here aren't your typical strawberry, chocolate, peanut butter cheesecakes, even though she does offer some variation of them. There's pandan, ube, lemongrass, ginger mango, passionfruit, matcha, guava, pineapple raspberry, and I heard she even cooks up something with the pickle brine from the other business that operates in that kitchen. I thought this would be one of those situations where the food won't look like the picture. The pictures are obviously styled, they look stunning. Nope! The food looked just like what was on Instagram. I am a long time lover of cheesecake, dare I say it's my favorite of the cakes. The condensed milk ube mirror glaze was a lot thicker than I thought it would be and held its form. It wasn't runny and goopy. Loved that it wasn't a sticky mess. The crust was very very thick, I've always wanted more crust on other cheesecakes. On the description, it says it's "jasmine scented almond shortbread cookie crust" slightly saltier than most crusts I've had, but still very enjoyable. I've only had the traditional graham cracker crust and I'm afraid this almond shortbread crust has ruined all other cheesecake crusts for me. I have been disappointed at a lot of places using pandan, because the flavor just wasn't there, not Muse cheesecakes though. Pandan was present indeed. I would have loved if it was a little stronger, but I think that would have overpowered the cheesecake. Each component of the cheesecake are so different and complex on its own. They come together in delicious harmony to make this beautiful slice. I grew up with a lot of Vietnamese food and pandan has a very special place in my stomach.. heart! I've never seen jasmine used outside of tea and condensed milk outside of Vietnamese iced coffee. Kiana definitely has a way with these ingredients and she's a cheesecake goddess! I really can't wait to try the calamansi, Ube, and whatever else is getting cooked up in this delicious kitchen.

Durian cheesecake!!!! I am Vietnamese-Cambodian and durian is my jam. I love its pungent goodness in all forms -- pure and un-doctored straight from the prickly shell, ice cream, smoothie, topping on mashed avocado dessert and now.. CHEESECAKE! ohhh my goodness. My heart. I have returned so many times and buying extra slices (possibly buying out her supply for the week...) to share with my family and friends, who have all raved about the cheesecake from here. Durian isn't her only flavor though. She has so many creative flavors and I've noticed she's had comfort flavors from different cultures. To top it off, the owner, Kiana, is a wonderful lady. She is a one woman team and is kicking butt at her game from what I've gathered in the short time I've known her. She could be dead tired, but always has a smile on her face. I almost forgot to rave about her TARO BURGER on a vegan bun. I don't know how frequently she makes them, but if you see it being offered, do yourself a favor and get it. The portion is quite large so be prepared for leftovers. Unfortunately for me, my carnivorous sister gobbled the other portion of my burger right up and didn't even miss her meat. It comes with a vegan mac salad on the side. I am not one to enjoy mac salads usually, I think it's due to the mayo (not a mayo fan), but I actually liked this version. I forgot to take a picture of the burger before it all got inhaled. Sad face.

The toasted marshmallow didn't add much, but maybe I'm biased bc I don't rlly care for toasted marshmallow ‍ Overall, the entire sundae is mainly a ton of vanilla ice cream. It's a big portion that I shared with someone else. Second time I went, I got the banana pudding sundae which was soooo good. I shared this with my friend and it was plenty. They give a good amount of banana pudding and you can tell it's quality. I saw bananas, the bread/wafer part, and it pairs nicely with the ice cream. Prob my favorite thing from this place. My other friend got the pbo which was also good. They layer oreo and peanut butter pudding so you get it all throughout the sundae which is nice. She also got an everything cookie which has literally everything in it. It was texturally interesting and not too sweet! Overall, good flavors and quality ice cream. The portions are a bit big and I wish they had half or even quarter sizes since these came in huge cups.
