Service seems lacking and honestly they could use some service etiquette training as it's not a warm and inviting first impression. I mean, here is the deal. When a customer comes in to spend their cash money ( yes, they only take cash - FYI), the ownership and staff should be happy to have the business and should show that. As for the atmosphere, this is a walk in and order operation with some nice tables to eat at outside in the nice little courtyard like setting. Prices seem reasonable for the Island as well. Loved it. We ordered take out for the hotel. My husband had a philly chicken cheese and he loved it. I had two chicken tacos with rice and beans. Really loaded and diced chicken meat. The taco sauce was tasty and not spicy. I'm sure they have different kinds. We brought back an extra ham and cheese sandwich cold sandwich for a midnight snack. Door stays open so you can smell the aroma from the food which is what attracted us to the restaurant along with it being different from other restaurants on the island. Staff was friendly. I caught an error the cashier made on my bill, but he corrected it at the register. I ordered fried rice ($4.00) with veggies (upcharge of $3.50 for the veggies which us ridiculous.. But things on the island are more expensive due to imports so I moved past it.) My friend ordered the teriyaki chicken that came with rice and veggies. He had more veggies than I did on my plate, and it's a veggie plate that I was up charged for. I only had cabbage, peas, and carrots. He had those plus onions, water chestnuts, baby corn, and celery. RIDICULOUS. ***Note to cook or owner. When a customer orders veggie plate GIVE THEM ALL THE VEGGIES. I understand that the cook probably cooked everything together, but he/she needs to portion CORRECTLY especially if a customer is upcharged for the veggies. Also food needs salt. I don't like much salt, but I had to add soy sauce (which I don't usually do) to give the food flavor. May 10, 2010 - I love this little eatery where you can order and eat right outside. A bit on the expensive side but cheaper by Avalon standards. I came back to Avalon (from the PNW) just to have the sauce that is in a small container however a few things have changed a year after: the sauce is spicier and the servings are smaller. Fair prices, poor customer service, ok food. I tried to order the California roll on the menu, but was quite bluntly told by the lady up front "We don't have California rolls." Hmm. It was a missed opportunity for her to suggest another option, apologize for the non-updated board, or just be a little kinder, I suppose. I just read the write up on their site expressing that their teriyaki chicken is probably some of the best on the island. I believe I'd absolutely have to concur!! I had the pleasure of staying at the beach house at Hotel Metropole, and this restaurant is downstairs in the courtyard of the hotel which is just super cute in itself. I was soo hungry and everyone in my group was wandering, undecided about what to eat. We were all hungry and wanted something easy and quick. My cousin and I could't take the choices made with the arcade food menu of chicken fingers and pizza. I still wanted to be able to enjoy my food, and it didn't look like this place was going to cut it. So I figured I just order a darn taco from the spot around the tiny corner until everyone could be on board to find a restaurant we all would enjoy. I decided to order the chicken teriyaki instead. It seemed I would get more for my money, and it was most likely more healthy than the burrito or taco. I was very unassuming of the food partly because its a little hole in the wall and partly because it served mexican food with asian food with american deli. But as my sugar was dropping by the mili second I just wanted some nourishment. My cousin reluctantly copied my order of chicken teriyaki being a bit more skeptical than me. "AHww Ummm" was the sound we made of pure satisfaction while chomping on our super yummy chicken. Upon seeing our happy faces with our greedy checks stuffed with meat , rice and vegetables and while sitting quietly under a tree in the courtyard, the entire group decided this was the place to eat. Was on the island for my birthday and was looking for some delicious vegan options which are pretty scant on the island. Nonetheless ran into Katie's Kitchen which offered a spicy tofu and rice dish. It was amazing, spicy and seasoned well with lots of veggies and delicious tofu. The portion was very generous and filling. I ate here again the very next day and actually could eat here the entire time. I asked for a special tofu and rice dish the next day and they made it for me. Came to Catalina looking for some good food since the island itself is pretty boring when the weather is crappy. My BF and I drank some margaritas then came upon this place tucked in a quaint little side street near a hotel I believe. I wanted Mexican food and he wanted Korean so this place was perfect for us. We pulled up the Yelp review below and figured, "Eh, someone who is probably partial to another restaurant on the island wrote that." Should have listened. The torta was a huge slab of meat between bread with soggy lettuce and tiny slices of avocado. Not very good. The spicy beef was that same beef used in the Mexican torta with some sriracha and soy sauce maybe mixed with it. Tough meat to chew, and not very flavorful. Don't get tricked by this place! Out of all the places we went to eat on Catalina this was the most decent food we ate. We ordered the Katie's special which was a huge container for a reasonable price. It included chicken, steak, and shrimp with rice and vegetables. It was like everything else we ate on our trip here bland. But with some teriyaki sauce it was pretty decent. Probably one of the only places I would recommend to eat on the island. Yet, despite the decent food the owner of the place an elderly women and was quite rude and dismissive. Katie's is a small, take-out place, with an unusual Asian and Mexican menu. My wife and I dropped in here for something light, and ordered wonton soup. We've had wonton soup countless times before, but never here. It took some time to prepare, which tells me everything is fresh, not pre-made. We were surprised to get such a large serving, full of carrots, onions, egg, and of course, wontons. The soup was hot, delicious and we agreed that it's the best wonton soup we've ever had. We can't wait to stop by for additional menu items at a later time. The service was friendly, and you can see the spotless kitchen area from the front counter. Very rude staff. Well cashier.... not sure if she was Katie herself. As we were ordering, my husband wanted to add a California roll. She says very firmly "no, we're not making that today". So we just wait for our order of chicken teriyaki and spicy chicken outside and we can see her breathing down the chefs back.
