This review is for the grooming only. I wish I could give this place negative stars. Absolutely horrible. Had a 10am appointment. Doors were locked until 10 exactly. The groomer came in at 10 so she wasn't ready. The grooming salon looks like a torture chamber. It's tiny and messy. I don't know where any of these positive reviews came from. Maybe for small dogs it's fine. The groomer needed us to stay with our dog and get her on the table to cut her nails. After the nail cutting she left us with our dog to go somewhere else in the store for at least 10 minutes. This is after we were rudely interrupted by her daughter coming into the grooming salon to let her know a Guinea pig was here for a nail cut. She comes back in after over 10 minutes while our dog is freaking out in this room to write a manual bill and brings it out so it seems like she was helping other customers. Then she needs our help getting our dog into the metal tub. Then said ok you can leave. And we're like what, didn't give us any other info. We had to ask for it. Her grooming isn't even over yet and I immediately regret leaving her there. For reference, my dog is a rescue mix that's 70lbs and the sweetest puppy. She's never had any issues getting groomer elsewhere. Side note: did not explore the actual store. I like that they have cats that live there but it's a massive distraction in the grooming salon.

Ditch the big chain stores and get A+ customer service from this large selection family owned local store. Delivery done by the owner to surrounding local towns! All the staff is friendly and very helpful. We have four dogs who all have different medical and nutritional needs. Plus we sometimes foster -- Katie's always has what we need or will help us find it and get it to us. We can shop in person, by phone, or online and know we are also supporting local!

Moved from Arizona to New Jersey. I've always avoided taking my dog to the groomer because every single experience I've had the groomer just does what they want and completely ignores what I ask for. They try to assert how they feel the dog should look and make excuses when the pet doesn't look how you want it to. I decided I needed to get my dog groomed regardless because I'm traveling. so I said I'll give it another try. My groomer was Julie, and she is great to work with. Julie is a carefully listener, and she'll work with you step by step to give your dog a perfect look! She's patient and skilled with her hands. I'm very happy with the cut, the experience, and the customer service! I will be returning.

Very good local pet store for unique and healthy food items for your pet! They even sell good quality high reviewed pet grooming supplies that you'd find on amazon like shampoo. In his last days, we were feeding my dog the primal freeze dried chicken nuggets along with goats milk and this was the only local store that was able to provide this food whenever we needed it right away. He enjoyed it very much and he also enjoyed those very special cookies they sell that are very safe for dogs. For the items that I'd see online and that weren't in stock, the store manager also offered to special order them for me. In his last days, his meals were from Katie's pet depot so I am very thankful to this store and the staff, which was always very helpful. God bless and keep doing what you guys are doing.

How reliable is their grooming for dogs? I read Petco reviews and they are horrifying. Been going to Petsmart but they always make my dog look like a rat and dont even trim his nails properly. Need help in a new place.

We just took our Chiweenie, Mio here for his first time. Outstanding service. He looks so cute. They do a great job and the store itself is wonderful. Always in stock and will Special order if needed. And happy to give advice when asked. They… Read more

We've had a couple of good grooming experiences here, but during check-in at our most recent visit,…read moreTina (the salon manager) hurt our senior dog in front of us, condescended to us with inaccurate information, and was generally antagonistic. She hurt our dog by repeatedly trying to rip a comb, root-to-tip, through his matted coat -- my pup was in obvious pain as she did this. Her point was to show us how matted he was, to justify a de-matting fee. We already told her our dog was matted and agreed to the de-matting fee, so there was no need to belabor it. Also, of course you can't pull a comb root-to-tip through a matted poodle coat -- you're supposed to de-mat tip-to-root using a brush. In my book, hurting an animal to prove a point is sick, and it probably means Tina shouldn't be trusted to handle animals for a living. In the midst of lecturing us, Tina asked what we were using to brush him at home -- her tone made it seem like she doubted we were brushing him at all. We told her, as we've told every groomer before her, we use a slicker brush for the most part. She loudly condescended, "That's garbage! You're not gonna get any mats out with that" and told us we should be using a comb instead. Based on six years of caring for a poodle mix, I was certain this was not correct. My mother is a dog groomer who owned and operated a grooming salon, and she, along with every salon we've taken our poodle to, has confirmed we're using the best brush for him. Every search result on the topic concurs that a slicker brush is the most fundamental tool to care for a poodle's coat; a comb is a finishing tool, not for de-matting. Not wanting to argue publicly with a professional over her presumed subject matter expertise, we smiled and nodded until she finally took our pup back for grooming. His haircut came out fine, but I have to wonder -- when we left, did Tina de-mat his coat correctly using a brush or incorrectly using a comb? If the former, Tina knowingly gave us incorrect information. If the latter, she caused our dog unnecessary pain due to her ignorance. Neither possibility is acceptable. My partner and I are working professionals, experienced dog parents, and new homeowners. Our poodle is not typically matted; he was matted because we've been overwhelmingly busy buying, renovating, and moving into a home and have simply not had the time we normally do to brush him. Now that our lives have calmed again, we will resume our at-home grooming routine. There was no need to lecture or condescend to us, and certainly not to promote disinformation about how to take care of our dog. This is the main issue that concerns me about Tina and why we aren't comfortable with her grooming our dogs. However, a couple of other things happened that are worth noting, since they help paint a picture of how Tina seems to be. One of the first things she asked was why our schnauzer mix had a muzzle on. Her tone was combative right out of the gate, but the question was more than fair, so we readily told her we keep our pup muzzled in public because she has bitten a couple of times. Tina didn't ask for further details and barked at me to take the muzzle off. I was shocked she had barked an order at me and confused as to why I needed to take the muzzle off right now when I could just remove it along with her other gear in a few minutes. Turns out, there was no reason to bark at me to take the muzzle off - no reason other than to antagonize and condescend. Tina also insisted obsessively during check-in "This is NOT a miniature poodle!" I thought, "I know, that's why I filled out the form stating he's a 27-lb mini-poodle MIX." Ignoring her unpleasantness, we simply told her that the rescue said he's a poodle-Bedlington mix. She continued, "He's way too big for a mini-poodle, he's definitely a Bichon." At this point, we were confused as to why this lady was so bent on us being wrong. Why did she think it was impossible for a mini-poodle mix to be slightly larger than a purebred mini-poodle? He certainly isn't a standard poodle or a toy poodle. Ultimately, he's a mixed-breed rescue dog, so no one knows what breeds he is. Tina abruptly ended the seemingly pointless disagreement by stating aggressively, "Well in my system he's a cockapoo, so the price for his bath and brush is going to be higher." Once I understood the point of her insistence - to charge a higher price - her aggression made it seem like she thought we were trying to get a lower price by misrepreseting his breed. Not in the slightest; he's been to six different grooming salons since we've had him, and he's probably seen 12-15 individual groomers. We've told all of them that he's a 27-lb mini-poodle mix, and it's never been an issue until we met Tina. I hope that going out of her way to proactively undermine and dismantle her clients' good grooming practices in order to instead promote disinformation about caring for animals would disqualify Tina from managing a PetSmart salon.

Keep your dogs far far away from Lisa." I hesitate writing this review because the owners, Monica and Arjun, are EXTREMELY nice and run a well kept and absolutely adorable shop filled with amazing treats, toys, and food options/toppers for dogs. The Modern Canine is conveniently located in a strip mall on 206 with plenty of parking, and they give free puppacinos to dogs who visit. Unfortunately, my review is as low as it is because I had a TERRIBLE experience with their groomer Lisa. Despite the multiple recommendations I received in a local neighborhood Facebook page for a reputable groomer, Lisa did the worst grooming job I've ever seen (I had a cockapoo for 16 years prior to the puppy I have now). Worst of all, I trusted this groomer enough to do my dog's haircut 2 weeks before our wedding. I paid $80 for a full body haircut, bath, brush/blowout, ear cleaning, and nail trim. My fiance was the one taking our dog to/from the groomer, so I reached out on Instagram a week before the appointment with "inspiration/inspo pictures" for the haircut so they'd know exactly how to groom him and my fiance wouldn't have to worry about explaining it to them since he would be rushing during his lunch break to take our dog to this appointment. They said they'd add the pictures to his file but when the day of his appointment came around, they called me while I was working to ask if I had pictures even though I already sent them and they said they'd add the pictures to his file a week beforehand. When my fiance picked him up, the hair on his face was much rounder than my inspo pictures. I asked the groomer to round it out a little more to match the picture and the outcome was a sloppy, choppy MESS. I requested a partial refund for the face trim and part of the tip to reflect the cheaper overall cost, which the owners graciously gave me. When I was home the next day, I noticed that even the body was cut sloppily. Lisa left long patches on his butt and paws and it looked like she just cut his hair with straight scissors instead of blending it out and making it more of a clean cut. I feel like I could have bought a dog grooming kit on Amazon and done a better job. I reached back out requesting a full refund of the tip which they willingly refunded. The owners handled the situation very professionally, and they were apologetic which I appreciate. That's why I still recommend The Modern Canine for the store itself and will continue to support it by buying toys and treats, but I DO NOT RECOMMEND HAVING YOUR DOG GROOMED HERE. Keep your dogs far far away from Lisa. I've since found an amazing and extremely talented groomer to fix the mess Lisa made. This other groomer also agreed that his face trim came out extremely choppy and sloppy. I'll post a review of the lifesaver groomer on my profile if you'd like to see the groomer I highly recommend instead.
