This is not usually the type of place I order from, but for some reason I decided to try the pork Katsu for $18. The stall has all these supposed "Michelin" awards but what I got was unappealing slop. The Katsu was nothing like Japanese Katsu. The breading was mushy, it had a cloying sweet flavor that I did not like, and the rice was old. It seemed to be more like airline food or some drek from "Wonder" that was prepared ahead of time and microwaved. The portion was OK, but I didn't want to finish it, I threw it out. This food court on Pearl Street was pretty much deserted and I can see why. The turnover was poor, it was all overpriced portion controlled garbage. Located within urban space, i was hoping to settle my sushi cravings and was slightly let down by this location but it was still good nonetheless. I ordered kani salad (which did not taste as traditional as i expected) and was let down due to missing dressing. it was overly dry and missed the target. I asked for crunchies in my spicy tuna roll and she said "they don't do that" okay... nice response, rude! when i got my roll there something else in it that i can't identify, i don't like surprises and this is extremely dangerous considering i have a long list of allergies. I went for a stroll to find some lunch. My initial notion was to find a slice of pizza near my hotel off of Water Street. Instead, I wandered into the food hall down the street from the hotel and found Katsu Katsu. The owner was there and she answered all of my questions. She modified my meal to suit my food allergy and also made sure that her staff was very meticulous in their preparation of my meal. I know that food courts/halls don't always have the best reputations however, this place is really a hidden gem as others have said here on yelp. I agree with the one review that said why would you try sushi when the place was Michelin recommended for Katsu. However, part of me just wants to prove them wrong and go back and try it. First , the pork Katsu. Very flavorful crunchy (even though I brought it back to my hotel) and a delicious sauce on top. Next to the rice: soft, not hard and flavorful for white rice. Finally, the veggies were: extremely tasty, but a bit spicy for me personally. I am a whimp when it comes to spicy food, for those who can tolerate medium without tasting it you won't even know. The vegetables were very very fresh! Just because the owner was so nice she earned that extra star, a five star rating from me. Trust me many places are excellent, but usually get one or two details wrong. Not this place! I'm not going as far as to claim this is a hidden gem when Katsu Katsu literally in the middle of a bustling food court in the Financial District, but I do think it's a bit under the radar given that it's literally Michelin rated; how many of the divey teriyaki chicken and cheese fries stands in your food courts can say that? My palate isn't sophisticated enough to really get into whether specific food is worthy of that type of accolade (besides this, I've been to a restaurant in San Juan that had a Michelin rating - 1919 in Condado - and I remember more about the presentation of the dishes and the black horse lamp/statute right outside than the taste of the food) but I can say that it's the best of the options in Urban Space, and there's some legit competition here. This was initially a recommendation by one of my chums a few months ago. I've been coming to Urban Space since it opened last summer and have regularly frequented the Playa Bowls (way less depressing than the one down the street at One New York Plaza), the Puerto Rican place and the prior pizza establishment. All perfectly fine, depending on your mood, but Katsu didn't catch my eye for whatever reason. It's very tasty, and not like the "normal" curry you expect with Indian food (which was my mistaken impression) - it's a sweeter curry and for me at least far preferable. I don't hate Indian food, but I need to be in the mood for it, which only happens every six months or so. This type of curry? I could eat on at least a weekly basis, and sometimes I have. There's enough of the curry provided that it should be able to soak up not only the slices of chicken, but the scoop of accompanying rice as well (I can do without the thin strands of radishes or whatever is also included). The chicken is super flavorful as well, and is prepared in a panko-style, which is obviously still fried but doesn't feel as naughty as making a KFC run. The portion is very decent and filling; I've had this for lunch around 1 and literally not been hungry for the rest of the day. I think the price point is a LITTLE high even given the quality and portion - with tip, this runs you a little over $20, when it should really be closer to $17ish in my opinion for a quicker sit-down meal - but it's certainly not as egregious as some other places in the neighborhood. The wait time can also be all over the place, depending on the staff and the number of customers. I've had a handful of instances where I've ordered and gotten my food within 30 seconds. Perfect. I've also had occasions where it's taken 10 minutes or so. If time is a concern, I'd go on a Friday when the crowd has thinned out for the weekend (this spot is a little too far removed from the tourist areas to really have much of a demographic beyond nearby office workers). Urban Space in general has been a positive. It's a cool spot with a decent amount of comfortable seating (though it can get crowded and a little difficult to find a spot right at the height of lunch), with varied, above average options. The chicken tasted fresh and good quality which is hard to find in most places. The portion was just right for lunch and the service was quick. I'll be back for more of the menu. I work across the street and Katsu Katsu is one of my favorite lunch spots. My go-to's are the chicken Katsu curry or just the regular chicken Katsu set. I tried their sushi once and it was fine, I wouldn't recommend it -- but then again why go to a historically Michelin rated place with "Katsu" in the name and order the sushi over Katsu? I paid approximately $30 total for a Spicy tuna roll, a California roll, and an Avocado roll. Although they made it in front of me, it didn't taste fresh and all 3 rolls were un-flavorful. I feel compelled to leave my first ever Yelp review to support this place. I see there are only two other reviews and neither are good. I've had the pork katsu curry and the beef curry udon soup (separate days) and both were the best I've had in the city and compare favorably to what I've had in Tokyo. The food here is very good. It's not the cheapest katsu or udon around but the quality is high and it's not outrageously expensive. I've eaten at many stalls in this food hall and it's actually very competitively priced with the others, so the price is probably a function of the cost of doing business there.
