My friends and I came here for dinner on a Thursday night and it was surprisingly busy! Though we didn't have to wait for a table, we got seated at the last seats available at a shared table, so tip - make reservations to get your own table and to avoid a wait! After eating here, I get why this place was busy on a random weeknight! The food here is so good, and reasonably priced! My friends and I tried a variety of nigiri, hand rolls, signature dishes and daily specials and everything we tried was delicious and really fresh! Our guess is that you can't go wrong with whatever you end up trying here, at least for the sushi. We didn't actually try any of the cooked food, but my guess is that it's also delicious! A major con for me was the server/staff not being flexible or accommodating to the customer's reasonable preferences or unfortunate allergies. Great place for lunch and dinner, Katsu-ya offers an array of raw and cooked dishes; anywhere from fresh sashimi to golden brown fried katsu. My first time at Katsu-ya was during the pandemic which was unfair to me, to leave a review at that time. The restaurant was very quiet with mediocre grade sushi rolls and lacked energy. Fast forward to my recent experience having gone twice, I'd like to recognize this restaurant for their superb service, inviting atmosphere and incredible food (no update on sushi rolls, sorry). For $22, you can expect an amazing dinner combo: rice, agedashi tofu, salad (choice of miso, ponzu or ginger dressing), miso soup and their desired entree which also comes with a seaweed salad and marinated bean sprouts. To me, this is a phenomenal find in Seattle. This combo set is a banger! I highly recommend their Katsu entree (of course, I mean it's in their name). Miso marinated cod and salmon collar are amazing selections I've tried. Recently my sister and I ordered a nigiri duo of salmon, yellowtail and tuna which were indeed very fresh! Make sure the chef includes a bit of wasabi and ginger, free of charge. Wash it down with hot sake for $15 and boom, for 2 combo sets and a sake for 2, you'll find yourself dining until you're stuff for less than $60, amazing! I wanted to like this place more since I live walking distance from this place, and I have been wanting to try this place for a while. I just never prioritized it since it is so close and I tell myself that I can go anytime. I went here for lunch to take advantage of their lunch specials - I tried their sushi bento lunch special and the corn tempura appetizer on the side. The sushi bento included soup and salad (which I opted for ginger dressing), along with the usual sushi accompaniments like soy sauce, ginger, and wasabi. It consisted of miso marinated black cod, spicy tuna crispy rice, crab hand roll, edamame, pickled vegetables, and a selection of nigiri. The soup is great as there is a lot of tofu and seaweed. The salad and salad dressing was okay. The rice in spicy tuna crispy rice was not crispy at all. It was soggy but kind of retained the crispy flavor. The nigiri was not really fresh and it was overwhelmed with the taste of wasabi. The black cod is decent but was a bit fishier than what I usually expected. I really enjoyed the corn tempura - for $6.80, despite it only being 4 pieces, it was pretty solid. It was surprisingly filling and heavy. When you dip the garlic butter sauce, it kind of tastes like popcorn! Service is good as they check up on us regularly and checked if we needed hot tea or iced water refill. We were asked water or tea and we ended up getting both which was a nice gesture on that part. Food came out relatively quickly so this would be a nice option when you are pressed on time, but it was also not too busy so you can enjoy the meal slowly if you wish (not sure about dinner but for sure lunch is not a busy period). read more

It was easy to find a seat on a Wednesday night. Katsu ya is pretty popular as it's conveniently located in the heart of SLU. Street parking isn't difficult in the surrounding area. Would not recommend coming here for sushi, there's a lot of better places in the area or in Belltown for better sushi and options. However if you're looking for some traditional Japanese foods like pickles, fish, tempura, bento foods, look no further. Wouldn't call this an izakaya exactly, but definitely has the elements of food you would find in Japan. Price is a bit steep. read more

While spending a week in Seattle, I was stoked to dine on sushi with fresh seafood! After all, you are right on Elliot Bay and Pacific Ocean with a fairly large Japanese population. We came in on a Friday evening after finding this place on Yelp due to its positive reviews. There was a line out the door at the small host stand, so this too was a good sign. It required a 30 minute wait without an advance reservation but ended up being well worth it. We received a call when our seats were ready and sat at the sushi counter where all the action was going on. Every time a group of diners came in or left the staff would holler out a phrase in the Japanese language. We started with the Creamy Popcorn Shrimp, of which we ended up getting two orders because they were so darn delicious and addictive. We continued with the Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna which was that perfect balance of crunchy, smooth, spicy and sweet. Then onto the various sushi rolls: Spicy Tuna Wrap Avocado Roll, Tempura Shrimp Roll and California Roll. All of the fish and ingredients tasted so fresh., while the rolls were not too heavy on the rice. What I also absolutely loved and appreciated outside of our dining experience was what I heard while I was eavesdropping on the restaurant manager and staff members. He kept cheering on the staff with words of encouragement. I also overheard him telling one of the dishwashers "We will be fine. Go home to take of them. Family is always first!" Apparently this hard worker had an emergency at home but didn't want to let down the rest of the team. This was heartwarming. I was excited to learn via their website that they have a few other locations around LA. I am now going to seek them out and hope the one in West Hollywood opens back up soon. read more

We came here with my dog and sat outside, but my dog was shaking and nervous, so we ended up getting our food to-go. We ordered 3 different rolls that I thought tasted okay. I used to live right next to this building and was waiting all of 2020 for them to open! But COVID hit so i think there was a little delay in them opening and now that they finally are I've been meaning to try. My friend was able to check it out a couple of times and has been raving about it so I decided I'll visit. It was super yummy! After spending the afternoon paddle boarding, I was stoked for some amazing food and stumbled across Katsu-ya. I arrived around 6:45-ish on a Saturday and snagged the last table available, but it appeared like most people had made a reservation. There is a tiny sushi bar available with very limited spots as well. Ordered a bunch of things, but these are my highlights: - Crab Roll in Soy Paper and Japanese Ceviche: Sampled the Rakumori Bento and these were my favorite by far. The crab is sweet and delicious while the ceviche is refreshing - Caviar and Toro Roll: I think this was a limited time menu, but the salinity of the caviar combined with the fatty, melt in your mouth tuna belly is a winning combination. - Yellowtail Belly Nigiri: My favorite of the nigiri we sampled, but everything on their menu is a winner. We had never come here before, but saw great reviews AND were excited to see they had outdoor seating that was dog friendly. There are six outdoor dining tables that seat 4 each. We were seated immediately around 6pm on a Friday. Even though we were outside, the service was great. The server checked on us frequently, water was refilled, and food came out quickly. The reason for my low rating is that the food was just not great. We got a variety of dishes and felt everything fell flat. For the price, the quality was truly lacking. The $18 toro roll was so poorly cut as you can see in my picture. We get saba (mackerel) nigiri almost everywhere and the saba here was almost inedibly bad. The crispy rice was not very crispy and the rice was so mushy inside. The popcorn shrimp, while tasty, completely overpowered the roll and we didn't understand why so many rolls defaulted to soy paper vs. nori. For the tempura, some of the veggies were a bit too hard/raw. And, the ceviche tasted okay, but the veggies were chopped so small (impossible to pick up) and there was barely any fish in the portion. I'm not sure if we just came at a bad time, but I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to try this place. read more

In town for a few days and was feeling tired from travel, so I came upon this bright, casual spot for some udon and nigiri. Food was delicious - the nabeyaki udon was a large portion with the noodles cooked perfectly. The broth was light and comforting. I also tried some nigiri - the uni (sweet, buttery, fresh), ikura (bursting with flavor), and salmon with caviar (fatty pieces with a delicious combo of the briny caviar and shallots/onion/something from the allium family)! What tied it together was the amazing service from Zoe, who offered a hot towel to start the meal and was attentive and diligent. It really elevated the experience and I felt so pampered. Prices were great for the value. The udon was only $13 for a large portion and the nigiri was very reasonably priced. I appreciated that they put a price for their uni ($9 per nigiri) instead of listing "MP" like so many restaurants (e.g. $20 for a handroll at sugo). We also got some hand rolls to try which were really good. I see the food as something small to try, not really a full meal (at least for the hand rolls). We also got an entree set for only $6 which included rice, miso, and two other sides which is a really good deal. The atmosphere was also really nice inside, and I liked how there was outdoor seating as well and that you get to choose the bar, outside, or indoor seating. I like the composition of this dish, but I could have used more spicy. A fair bit of wasabi kicked it up a few notches. Miso Marinated Black Cod, $16 - 5 Stars We order miso black cod every time we see it. Their version is flavorful and the fish flacked off perfectly. Definitely recommend. Salmon Trio = Avocado-Lemon, Seared, Caviar, $13 - 4.5 Stars On their daily fresh sheet, these are excellent preparations of salmon. A must for salmon lovers. I loved almost everything I ate here and I'm slowly getting into sashimi! This spot has indoor and outdoor seating and the staff are all super friendly and helpful if you have dietary restrictions. My favorites were the baked crab hand roll, yellowtail and crispy rice. They also make a MEAN miso cod, not fishy at all and smooth like butter. I could eat that everyday with rice. I would skip on the udon and katsu, nothing too special about the two but great if you have a group that has restrictions. Their salmon was also a little over cooked, not too special and same with the yellowtail collar. The food is slightly better than what your expectations probably are looking at the menu or looking inside, and prices are pretty reasonable. I tried a few things on my visit. I had some tuna, salmon and toro nigiri, all of which were good. The toro was especially tasty which is often not the case at a place like this so bravo!
