Katsubō absolutely blew us away. From the moment we walked in, the experience was perfect, but the real star was the food (and Damian- shoutout to an amazing server!). We ordered two bowls of the Tokyo Shoyu ramen with chicken chashu, and I'm not exaggerating when I say it was the most incredible thing we've ever eaten. The soy sauce-seasoned broth was deeply flavorful without being heavy, the chicken was tender and perfectly cooked, and every single topping worked together beautifully, menma, spinach, nori, scallions, and narutomaki all added their own little moment. It was balanced, comforting, and somehow still exciting with every bite. You know a place is special when you're already planning your next visit before you're done eating... that was us. Excellent addition to the Park Circle area with good service and great food! The restaurant is on the smaller, intimate side so definitely make a reservation. They had some specials as well, so plan on taking that into consideration. The menu does have a nice variety and options for pork and chicken. They also have fun cocktails and a good beer/wine menu. We ordered the ribs (special) curry pork katsu, gyoza, and Tokyo Shoyu. Family style sharing is encouraged and the food came out when it was ready. Everything was super flavorful and good portion sizes. The cocktails we ordered were pretty good, but didn't blow us away like the food did. I was excited to try Katsubō after hearing good things, and while there were definitely some highlights, my overall experience landed somewhere in the middle. First, the atmosphere is really cool. The anime-inspired décor, Japanese lanterns, neon signs, and quirky artwork give the restaurant a fun, laid-back vibe. Waited a little bit though for service but on a Saturday could have been attributed to weekend tourism. We started with the gyoza, which was probably my favorite part of the meal. They were nicely seared with a crispy bottom and paired well with the dipping sauce.The entrées were good but didn't quite wow me. The loaded waffle fries were unique and delicious, and the spice was a bit much for me but hubby and daughter loved it. The burger and chicken sandwich were just okay considering the hype. My family and I came here last night for dinner and had an okay experience. We had reservations and were immediately sat when we arrived, but there is no parking at the restaurant. We found parking on the side of the road across the street at the park. We had a very strange experience with our waitress, she would come to the table and not say anything. She didn't introduce herself either. New restaurant for me. I love spices. And the food has ALL the SPICE. New experiment trying BAO BUNS. Got 3 of them 2 chicken and ones with kimchi and a fried chicken tender in it. A great place to have ramen. I had the Chicken Tokyo Shoyu and it was tasty. I've had the Spicy Miso before and it's equally delicious. Found this place while I was looking for a quick dinner before leaving airport and driving up to Aiken. The cucumber was so flavorful especially with the chili crunch. Love it! The Curry Plate has two huge pork loin breaded with panko powder. It was over-fried and turn slightly brown (instead of golden). The combination of shredded cabbage, carrots, potatoes and curry created a great dish. I would have given it a 5-star if the pork was not over-cooked. I've dined in and picked up takeout at Katsubo and have to say I'm obsessed with their crispy fried chicken. That comes as no surprise since Katsubo has roots going back to the folks that owned Kinfolk in Johns Island (which I miss dearly). So far I've only had the soy garlic flavor which is excellent, but I would like to try the others. I just heard they're doing $1 wings on Wednesdays now so that would be the perfect time to try them all. When dining in, we also shared an order of okonomiyaki and a ramen as well. The okonomiyaki was different compared to others I've had in the past, but tasty in its own right. I would like it a little crispier on the grill I think. Run, don't walk, to Katsubō! This is thus far the best ramen spot I have tried in Charleston no lie. The shoyu short rib ramen was soooo good I'm drooling now just thinking and typing about it. They also serve chicken and their soy garlic wings are bussin! Double fried and very crispy. If you're familiar with Bonchon their wings are very similar and just as good! I had the Yuzu Shio and everything had a nice fresh taste and the noodles were springy not mushy. The pork gyoza and pickled daikon starters were outstanding. Cute little spot close to Park Circle. They have a great happy hour menu from 4-6p. You can grab a table or sit at the bar. Lara is a great bartender and very friendly. The ramen is pretty chewy with more noodles than broth and no spicy options except the miso. I got the spicy miso and would NOT call it spicy. When I asked for chili oil to give it a little kick, I was given sesame oil and chili powder. None of the ramen comes with a soft boiled egg in it but you can add it for additional $. I got the pot stickers which were good but the sauce was too sweet. There is no parking lot so you must find street parking or down the road. Make sure not to park in the lot Nextdoor as it's for the barber. There is a covered patio out front but I wouldn't bring a large party here as it's pretty cozy inside. read more

I gave Katsubo another try. I have to say the Katsu Sando really impressed me! But I am a sucker for anything with Milk bread! I love the visual ambience and concept inside, but the execution is a tiny bit off. Maybe it was the music? It's still a really cool spot. The ramen was better than I expected (I am a ramen snob) and I LOVED how many options for ramen there actually were. All in all I will be returning for the katsu sando. Next time with pork! Also their Brussels sprouts are absolutely the best Brussels I've had in Charleston or maybe ever anywhere. Flavor bombs. So soft but still crunchy edges. I don't know how they do it! Slurp up! There's a new ramen and katsu spot in town. Welcomed by the cutest welcome mat that is so fitting for the space. There was no way and quickly sat down in an intimate seating. The hostess wasn't rude but definitely wasn't very nice or welcoming. The inside was loud but very cool to look at. Sitting outside was nice but had many flies around. Our waitress got us our drink and our order but was very absent throughout our time there, she also wasn't very nice either. The food came out fairly quickly! We got 12 wings, half og and half sweet and spicy gochujang. Very good flavor but the texture of the batter wasn't very good. We also got one of the miso ramens and the spicy ramen. Though the noodles themselves were very good i found the broth to be very heavy and too salty. The tantan something spicy broth just wasn't good at all to me but others could like it. Fun new ramen spot in park circle! I'm so so glad Charleston is getting more diverse food options. Ramen is one of my favorites so I was really excited to try this place. The inside is a little dark, but in a good way. There's booths, tables and a bar (which I love). There's lots of Japanese inspired decor with fun anime prints on the wall. We ordered the tantanmen spicy ramen with chicken and 8 piece pork gyoza. The ramen was pretty good, but the sesame broth brought it down a bit for me. I like spicy and the sesame just hit me with too much sweetness for a broth that's supposed to be spicy. But the noodles were good and the portion was nice. They charge extra for a soft boiled egg which I find odd since it's so common in most ramens. The pork gyoza was very good. They had a crispy outside shell, tasty filling and a thick, rich dipping sauce. It was plenty of food to share between my husband and I. The bartender was awesome. I ordered the spicy chicken Hokkaido miso ramen which is a miso based bone broth served with kikurage, corn, scallions, narutomaki and mayu oil. It's quite spicy and helped drain my sinuses. I also love that bone broth is great for gut health. The ramen was flavorfully fierce, thanks to some unexpected pairings that totally redefined what ramen can be! My boyfriend enjoyed his honey garlic jumbo tenders which he said reminded him of a light lemon grass sauce. I tried some of his fries and ranch dipping sauce which both had a kick to them.
