Was in the Kauai Area and wanted to try out some baked malasadas, and Kauai Bakery looked to be the best option nearby that we could try out! We stopped by on a Tuesday around 8:30AM and got our pick of malasadas to try out! Kauai Bakery is located in a shopping plaza with plenty of ample parking, making it very easy to stop by and grab some delicious pastries. Service is like your typical bakery, you pick what you would like and they get it to you so you can stuff your face immediately after purchase. Ambiance is cozy with plenty of pastries to pick from in the large display case. We got 4 flavors of Malasadas for $16, which is $4 per doughnut, which I think is a decent price for the size and heft. The flavors we sampled were Lilikoi, Coconut, and Guava - out of these flavors, the coconut one was my personal favorite! The flavor was exactly what I would want anything coconut cream flavor should taste, creamy texture with a pleasant coconut taste that didn't taste artificial at all. It captured the floral background taste that is missing from a lot of coconut desserts that makes coconut so pleasing to eat! The Lilikoi one was my next favorite, it had a slight tartness and a more subtly pronounced flavor - I think I was looking for something stronger personally. Lastly was the guava one, which actually tasted a bit artificial and didn't have a pronounced flavor at all, which was unfortunate. Despite this critique, I would still glady inhale 2 or 3 of them because the dough was really pillowy and really enjoyable to eat. I think that the pastries here (at least the malasadas) are very solid and priced competitively vs most things here on Kauai. I would totally come back to get several more of the malasadas as well as try the other pastry options on the menu. Stop by and give this bakery a try if you are in the area! read more

The bakery is located in a supermarket Plaza. There was plenty of parking. Very easy to get to and easy to find parking. Came as many people talk about this bakery. We got there around 6:30am and there were many choices of pastries. We chose a few different flavored malasadas and coffee. The malasadas tasted good but I wasn't blown away. Ok, I need to start this review by saying I am not a fan of Malasadas. I have tried them at several places and have not been won over. Kauai bakery's are the best of those I've tried. (Maybe don't take this too seriously.) What I am a fan of is their cinnamon roles and pineapple & coconut turnovers; they are great. I also tried an iced Mac nut iced latte. I as a little disappointed in that it didn't have a lot of flavor (coffee or Mac nut) and seemed a little watered down. read more

This is such a great spot! Very popular for their malasadas, but I'm not a huge fan of Malasadas. I go for their incredible breakfast sandwiches here! The breakfast sandwiches are a generous portion of whatever you've chosen. Don't forget to ask for their chipotle sauce on the sandwich or on the side. I prefer to have them put it on the sandwich. They are very friendly here, but not always the fastest service. Expect a slower pace to life on the island. "No hurry, no wurry" (spelled that way on purpose). Relax. Enjoy yourself! They have quite a few places to eat outside. The chickens are a little unruly here. Don't feed them haha. Also, make sure to grab a couple of their pastries here. Got four flavors to try... it was hard to choose the top favorite but I think Ube holds that spot in our hearts. Lilikoi comes to a close second...so tasty. We also tried guava and regular cream malasadas; although they're good, they are nowhere near the other flavors. The outside is a bit soggy though...i think thats because they're premade and have been sitting there for a while. I'm also spoiled and had my regular malasadas with cinnamon sugar coating...these ones dont have them (if you get the filled malasadas) so that takes off 1 star. read more

Came in specifically for the malasadas and they were absolutely superb! We got the flight to take back to our hale and it was awesome to be able to try them all. We even mixes some of the custards...so onz! We came early in the AM during a small kine "Kona low" so we were already on a mission. My reason for dropping 1star was I was in the mood and ready to buy an overpriced latte and they told me they didn't have coffee. I said "what?!" Looking at the delicious coffee menu.... Stopped by Kauai Bakery during our visit. The place is located inside an outdoor mall, and the store itself was clean and decent. The malasadas were good, but I'm personally used to the freshly made style like the ones from Leonard's Bakery in Oahu, so these didn't quite hit the same for me. The ham and cheese bun unfortunately was not worth the price, the bread was very thin and the ham and cheese were almost non-existent. Amazing bakery that has all of my favorite baked goods and beyond! I saved this stop for last as it's pretty close to the airport and was able to take some home with me. It is a very unassuming store front located inside a mall, however upon entering you are greeted with a wonderful variety of treats and a very pretty purple aesthetic. The staff here are also so nice. With so many options, I really wanted them all but unfortunately had to limit myself so I selected the following: * Kalua pork BBQ Manapua * Guava malasada * Ube malasada * Ube bread pudding * Mac nut latte w/almond milk 100% amazing and the bread pudding made it through the flight and was spectacular warmed up. Yum, yum! This was our first stop after landing in Lihue for a work trip. Located inside of a shopping plaza, this bakery was packed with yummy treats like malasadas, manapuas and other delights. I ordered at a dessert case and the service was swift and friendly. The shop is small but decorated cute with their signature purple lei logo. Our favorite was the ube one. The other flavors were more subtle. The only downside was the donut itself wasn't very flavorful. The bbq bun was also a bit underwhelming. In the 19th century, Portuguese laborers brought this amazing pastry to Hawaii, malasadas! It's a fried dough with filling inside, and Kauai Bakery is THE spot to try them. Extremely inviting bakery when I walked in. Explained all the great options also. Got a mix of sweet and savory options they had, and all were AMAZING! Best part is that you get a discount to the local sandwich shop around the corner with receipt. I even got a free sample of the locally made peanut butter. While casually flipping through the United Airlines magazine, we came across an article about Kauai Bakery and were immediately intrigued. The week before, we had tried some malasadas at the Grand Wailea, but they were mediocre at best. In contrast, the malasadas at Kauai Bakery were so good--pillowy soft dough generously filled with custard, unlike most others I've tried. These were easily some of the best malasadas I've ever had. I live in San Francisco, near a large Filipino community, and I grew up in Los Angeles, which also has sizable Hawaiian and Filipino populations--so I've had my fair share of malasadas. But these stood out as the best I've had in a long time. I'd definitely go back next time I'm in Kauai. read more

It was like eating bread that was shaped like a malasada with a filling and / or topping. Did not care for the custard. The gold standard for me is Tex Drive-Inn in Honokaa. I've tried malasadas (Portuguese donuts) from many different places in Hawaii, including the famous Leonard's in Oahu, the Four Seasons in Ko Olina, etc and I think Kauai Bakery is hands down the best. This was also the first shop where we experienced a lack of the aloha spirit. Food: there's nothing much more to say other than DELICIOUS! We tried many of the pastries and coffee as we were visiting and wanted to make sure we got to try everything. We tried the non filled Malasadas (personal preference). My favorite was the manapuas, ham and cheese and the Kalua pork competing for the top spot! The bread was so soft and fluffy! The malasadas are to die for! I've heard this donut mentioned on more than one Hawaii based tv show. I was really curious to find out what all the fuse was about. It is basically just a filled donut, right?. I now understand the fuss. This is not an air filled donut with a tiny bit of fruit filling. They are huge, a bit dense (more like a bun?), and no holding back on the filling. I could not decide on just one flavor so chose four, cinnamon sugar, coconut, guava and mango. I liked the cinnamon sugar. There was no filling but it allowed me to enjoy the flavor of the donut. The mango and guava were my next favorites. Every bite of the donut had filling. The filling was fruity and delicious. I didn't really care for the flavor of the coconut one. I tried to stay with a tropical theme but the coconut just wasn't to my liking. Note - They have a donut flight. Yes you read that correctly. It includes 10 donuts, one of each flavor. Too many donuts for one person so maybe an item for my next visit. I highly recommend stopping for breakfast on your way to some fun island activity. Get a malasada, some coffee and take a minute to enjoy a morning in paradise. read more
