I went to Kawa for my lunch break. I only have 30 minutes. I ordered my food. I love Asian food. However, after my order came out, I attempted to sit at a table to have my meal and the guy at the front counter rudely told me to leave as they only make orders to go. Not only is this a inconvenience with no prior notification but the guy was rude. Even if this food is good, I will never go back simply due to the crap customer service. In addition, I was told my order would be ready in 10 minutes. However, not even 3 minutes went by and it was ready. This makes me think that the food is not fresh but left over from earlier or the remains from the prior day just heated up in a microwave. No thank you. I would rather toss this food and take the hit than risk getting sick from food that is either not cooked or has been from a left over. 3 minutes?!?! I've never gone to a Asian restaurant and received my order in less than 10 min. read more

Ate here with clients a week or so ago during lunch. The timing was spot on, and the lunch specials were great! The green tea was also delish! Apparently the owner grinds the tea herself, so it is more of a matcha green tea than a loose leaf green... but anyway, enough about the tea! I ordered the twice cooked pork which was pretty good without the meat getting too tough, which is generally the issue with pork that is thinly sliced. The seasonings were good, and although it was flavorful, it wasn't too spicy, so I asked for the good ole' Siracha. Yum! I was surprised to see reviews of poor service because our waiter was attentive and checked on us several times throughout our meal. Overall, when I am back in Steiner, I can definitely see myself checking out Kawa again, although I can't see myself going out of my way to go there. read more

Ordered food at 5:45, food delivered at 5:55 food in the trash by 6:05. We decided to give this restaurant another go after some bad experiences what with them moving to a new location. That was our mistake. Food was cold, crispy duck was clearly from yesterday. Seriously 10 minutes to cook and deliver, it's impossible and also dangerous. I would NEVER go here again! I now order from Hunan Riverplace which is right down the road, cheaper, better food and MORE food! I am a fan of the Yakisoba Vegetable with Chicken or Vegetable YakiUdon. So, these two things I can speak of highly. If you do not know what to order, try these. ^^^^ I know they are moving to the front of Steiner Ranch to a new store and will be exclusively a take-away/delivery restaurant. I wish them well. They are kind folks. Some of the comments people have written seem overly exaggerated. There are two Asian restaurants in Steiner Ranch. This is the worst food I've ever seen in my life!. We ordered 2 Hawaiian Ducks with noodles, a total with delivery of $40 to get a plate full of pineapple chunks that looked like the mashed pineapples from a can with sweet and sour orange sauce. The worst part as you can see in the picture is that there was no duck meat at all!! Only skin and fat, I started separating all the skin and fat to the corner of the plate and realized it was the whole plate. We seriously vomited after tasting it and had the nastiest experience ever!. Who does this? Serve a plate full of duck fat and skin and advertise as Hawaiian duck! read more

Nothing good to say about this place. Other than the food being more than plenty, the food itself was incredible disgusting. It was delivery which makes it worse. I ordered the hot and sour soup and General T'sos. The soup had a strange old maple flavor and not spicy at all, the General t-sos Chicken was actually BBQ flavor, it almost feels like the cook was probably drunk that night or called out sick and they decided the bust boy could take his spot. Let's face it, we've all had bad Chinese at one ore more occasions in our lives but this was beyond bad, is like they new what you wanted but decided to reinvent their own flavors just for kicks lol. I've eaten at places that are hit or miss and I took my chances but this one time will be the first/last for me at this restaurant. Good luck! read more

This place is bad. No wonder it is always empty...I have had it a total of three times hoping that I would find the right dish and it would change my mind because I would really like to have a quality Asian restaurant in Steiner. The Tofu is the only thing that was OK. I have tried the beef and chicken...both extremely questionable. With the beef, the texture was just very soggy, AKA did not seem like actual beef. The chicken was horrendous. Like, the worst chicken I've ever had. Almost every piece had gross hard parts in it and I swear some parts of the "meat" were black...gagging as I type this. This review is for their Chinese food only, not their sushi. I tried take out recently from here - so no comments on the ambience or dine-in experience. Meat texture was nice - not overcooked like it can get. Veggies in the chinese dishes were crunchy yet cooked. Sauces were nicely balanced. I asked them to make my dishes extra hot. I really liked the food. If I count this as a Chinese option that actually delivers within Steiner Ranch, then it's even better. But that aside, would I go order from here again. Absolutely. Despite the mixed reviews we decided to order some pickup dinner because the menu looked so amazing and different from typical Chinese takeout. We ordered the house family wonton soup which, was good for a chicken vegetable flavor soup, the wontons were few and far between. They were not your typical folded filled wonton but rather sheets of wonton. The wonton sheets were so mushy and soft, it was evident the soup had been made early on in the day. The wontons should've been added once the soup is ordered in order to keep them fresh and a little firmer. We love a good crispy duck dish. The crispy duck we ordered with anything but crispy. While the duck it's self was cooked well, it had been put in a batter which was super mushy and not one bit crispy. What a disappointment! We always order fried rice. We ordered chicken fried rice and it was greasy, and once again gummy/mushy. The sad thing is that this was a Saturday evening and there was only one customer in the restaurant, so there is no excuse for poor cooking. We are still hoping to find a good Chinese restaurant and the four points area, but this restaurant will definitely not to be revisited by us. Super disappointed! read more

Have dined in and gotten take-out three times. Three times too many! The food is OK. Not great, but not awful. However it is way overpriced for the quality it is. The favors are off. One time I ordered Mongolian beef and got a "sauce" that consisted of oil, red peppers and onions. It wasn't bad, but not Mongolian beef. It was "off". Egg rolls consist of cabbage, nothing else inside. Again not bad, but "off". The worst part is the service. Lets be honest - they are not busy. So why should there be a long wait to be seated? Service staff stands around with nothing to do, maybe 15 open tables, but you can't be seated. Food takes a long time as well. The last time we were there the server walked away in the middle of the drink orders. Someone else had to come over and finish. Were we not quick enough? We were his only table. They leave the napkins and silverware out on the table. The last time I dined in, the three napkins/silverware near me were dirty. I mentioned it to the hostess since the server never came back. Two were taken away and I was left to use the one remaining, which happened to be the dirtiest of the three. Once I scraped the dried food off my fork, I ate my "off" tasting combination rice and paid the pricey bill. We haven't and won't be back for dine-in. I hear all the time how Steiner wants restaurants but then won't patron them when they are there. We eat at Cho and Lakeside weekly. Used to go to Fion weekly. We hit up the steakhouse every once in a while. This place just isn't good enough for what they are charging. We may still do take-out when we are desperate and have already eaten at the other local places but it will certainly be a last resort. read more

I like this place because the bar area is huge, and the restaurant seems spacious. There are like 15 beers on tap including all my favorites, Kirin Ichiban, Sapporo, Fat Tire, Stella, Ugly Pug, Guiness and Widmer Heffeweizen. Our waiter Rama was very informative when it came to sushi and Japanese cuisine and made very good recommendations. The razor sashimi is a great deal and the tuna tower is delicious. So if you try some Chinese dishes and a few sushi items you will not be disappointed! The 5 stars is basically for a 12 mile radius of Steiner ranch...I've had better sushi/Asian food downtown like Uchi and Chinatown. read more

We get to the restaurant and it was completely empty, not a single person. We are seated and open our menus and YIKES! Disgusting! They were sticky and old. I think mine wasn't just green on the one side but molding and on my guy's menu it looked as if someone and thrown up. Bad sign. He orders water I order tea. Tea was a bad idea. Thick as mud so I asked for a soda instead. The lady is super duper nice and brings it to me. Then we order an egg roll a piece and my guy orders sesame chicken and I order vegetable LoMain. The egg rolls were good even through they weren't served with sauce of any kind but then they served the entrees about 5 minutes apart. The sesame chicken was served first and it was luke warm so I told my guy to eat before it got cold. My lomain showed up about 5 min later it was hot, it was ok but not a lot on the vegetable side, no water chestnuts at all. Odd for vegetable lo main. They brought the check and even the check holder was sticky. Basically there are two words describe this place sticky and sad. :( No I wont be going back and I don't really think they are going to last long enough to have to warn people. read more

Last night we went to Kawa for the second time. They now serve beer and wine! One of the people in our party of 5, recommended "The Tower". It was absolutely fantastic. The make everything fresh, so if you want it made "special" they will easily accomodate you. The owner, Phoenix, is always present to greet you with a smile and fill in the blanks if you have any questions. Service is quick, food is excellent. I've had Chinese food in Beijing, Shanghai, and San Francisco. Kawa beats all of them. Best Chinese food I've ever had. We ordered 4 different dishes, and 3 different appetizers. All were fabulous. After reading other reviews, I wonder if we were in the same restaurant. The owner and her daughters were delightful. The place is clean, the atmosphere is friendly, and the food is delicious!! Disappointed by tonight's experience at Kawa. We waited 30 minutes to receive only half of our food. The service was poor - waitress didn't know the menu and managed to get something wrong in all three dishes that were ordered. She apparently forgot the kid's meal and brought it out 20 minutes later. When we asked about it, the waitress shrugged. The food that arrived was cold, lukewarm and bland. I'm so bummed to have wasted my weekly sushi dinner on Kawa. First, if you are looking for anything remotely ambient, then go down Quinlan a bit to Cho. We opted to try Kawa for a third time just to make sure that we weren't missing anything as some of the recent reviews are actually pretty good. I can't talk on those obviously, but I can tell you about our experience. Walked in and it took longer than needed to seat us. With only two tables filled, we had our pick and took a booth. Another long pause before our waitress came to take our order. She was nice enough, but informed us that they were out of three things we wanted to order. We made substitutions. The sushi was mediocre at best....fresh fish, yes, but pretty pricey and nothing standout. My husband had one of the Chinese entrees. He thought it was okay. We ordered another sushi roll midway through our dinner and after 20 mins determined it was not coming. But, yes, it was still on the check and we asked to have it removed. Which is quickly was. I'm just not sure how a restaurant with two seated tables can mess up service. But I guess that's me. In a nutshell - the takeout Chinese is probably the best option here. I certainly would not go for the restaurant atmosphere or prices. And you can find way better service and sushi at the same prices very close by. read more

Food-My husband and I eat here with the kids all the time. My kids calls the Curry Katsu there "yummy chicken." The new sushi chef is very knowledgeable on the different types of sashimi and sushi. I usually get the sashimi sampler or chirashi sushi. We went in today earlier than usual to find that they have a happy hour with a great selection of rolls and sushi. The happy hour prices are unbeatable. Service- The lady in the front always greets us with a smile. Her daughter is super kind too. I like going there because I don't feel distant from them. It's like going to a friend's place. I'm happy that they are here and hope they get enough support to stay. read more

Flavors were a bit "off" traditional fair, but no inedible, just kinda different in a strange way. Wife and I enjoy different usually but this was, as I said, a bit "off"... Prices were reasonable... Avoid the sushi unless you like cream cheese and sauces. That may have been the Cho owner in the other review of 1 star BUT he was spot-on... Cho is far superior as far as the sushi goes... Overall sushi was OK but nothing special and the overuse of sauces and cream cheese" kinda set the tone. Again, we favor more traditional sushi preparations... My wife and I were looking for a new place to eat near our home in 4 Points and headed over to Stiener Ranch with no particular place in mind. Found the Kawa Asian Kitchen tucked away in the back of strip center behind Wag-A-Bag. Pleasant surprise....my wife had scallops and for me, Tri-Deligacy w/Garlic Sauce. Both were very good, fresh and tasty. We will definitely be back. Also, they deliver. Friendly staff. read more

Wow! This place has always been my favorite Chinese American restaurant around! Started out with a wonderful House Wonton soup that was so fresh and enough to share. Then Spicy salt and pepper Calamari with Jalapeños. A must try for those use to the typical Calamari served at usual restaurants. Main course was the House LoMein, Fried Rice with Shrimp and Pork, and Spicy Beef with jalapeños. This meal was completely Chinese Americanized and WONDERFUL! Howard the owner is always personable and prompt when he's taking your order. Kawa is on the right track and I wish them all the best. I've been to the other two Asian Americanized restaurants in Lakeway and they both fail in comparison to this Steiner Ranch gem. Don't over analyze Chinese American food. Not the BEST Chinese food in Austin but the portions were huge and the waitstaff was friendly. We ordered egg foo yung, crispy duck and some shrimp and veg tempura. The egg foo yung was a bit different where everything was piled on top of the egg but it still tasted good. The crispy duck was surprisingly moist since it appeared dry by just looking at it. My general experience here could easily be described as "underwhelmed". I suggest not ordering take out because I live about 2 miles away and it took 75 mins to reach the doorstep. Though the staff is very personable and attentive at the restaurant. I think that when it comes to the sushi, there is a more creative and fresh line up at the take-away counter at HEB. I might also add that when judging this place it is only far to compare it to the common stigma of Chinese buffet joints all over town.....and they are definitely pushing to give the clientele a fancier experience. I would recommend dinning in and ordering the fresh steamed dumplings as they are very tasty and redeem anything lacking enthusiasm that may follow. read more
