We are always pleased when we call in our order - they always are happy and pleasant when answering the phones! The food is what we like in Asian takeaway. After two very long weekend days of doing landscaping under the hot Texas sun (exhausted and burnt), my husband and I didn't even have enough energy to drive to pick up to-go food...so we thought of Kawa Asian Kitchen - they deliver! DELIVERY REVIEW: What to order? They have all the usual Chinese fast foods suspects (e.g., Egg Rolls, Broccoli Beef, Wonton Soup)...a very extensive selection of traditional Japanese dishes (e.g., Hamachi Kama, Yakatori, Negimaki)...and then they have sushi. Ok, sushi delivery? Probably not a good idea. So, we decided to get a few "Chinese" and "Japanese" options to try. Chinese - Egg Drop Soup ($2.00) - really light color, super thin (watered down), absolutely flavorless. This is the first time I have EVER had bad Egg Drop and I order it every time we do Chinese takeout. Not a good start. Crab Puffs ($3.95): Four tiny puffs, not overly greasy, but where's the filling? Maybe a pea sized portion inside each. General Tso's Chicken ($10.95): In my experience you can usually tell if a Chinese restaurant is good or not by sampling Tso's Chicken. Ruh ro! Tough meat smothered in sticky, tasteless "so heavy on the corn syrup I can't believe how bad it was" sauce. There were a few small red chilies in it; however, they offered no flavor or heat. And, the dish came with a pile of millisecond blanched broccoli. I like fresh, al dent broccoli, but this was downright raw. Japanese - Pork Katsu Curry ($12.00): One of my husband's favorites...but not at Kawa. Overcooked pork lightly breaded served on top of the smallest portion of flavorless curry. Not good. Bad. Really bad. :( To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. Obviously we were not happy with the quality of the food. Now, onto the bill. Total with tax and $7 (WTF?) delivery fee = $46.02???!!!...plus $5 cash tip. What, what, what?! The delivery guy should've included a side order of Vaseline if you get my drift. We did not receive an itemized receipt; however, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to add all the charges up (listed above). According to the prices listed online, the total (with the delivery fee and tax) SHOULD have been $38.28...which is still outrageous...but where did the other $7.74 come from? Something just not right. And sushi? Delivery or not, I would be TERRIFIED to eat sushi at Kawa. If they can't even fry chicken properly, I'm not trusting their judgement with raw fish. Nope. Uh uh. Overall: The person who took my order was extremely nice. I wish my experience with Kawa was better, but it just was not. I have to provide an objective and honest review and sadly I can only give the restaurant 1 star. I think one major pitfall for Kawa is how far they have tried to stretch themselves. Like some other restaurants, they have fallen victim to the super-sized menu problem. Variety is good, but Kawa's dinner menu has 170 items on it!!! [Yes, I took the time to count because I wanted to see just how ridiculous it was.] And that's ONLY the dinner menu - they also have separate menus for lunch and sushi. Above-average Chinese takeout food, which is always a pleasure to find nearby. I should preface this by noting that I've ordered from Kawa about a half-dozen times now and have only eaten their take-out. For those planning on eating at the restaurant itself, the dining area seems to be strangely laid out and rather broken up into two areas, one with a defunct looking sushi bar(!) and the other with only a half-dozen tables in a very Spartan dining hall. So I really can't comment beyond that. As for the food I have no complaints as I have eaten my way through about a third of the menu. The standouts are the beef broccoli and the chicken with vegetables - Kawa seems to know how to store and cook veggies particularly well. Cashew chicken and the surprisingly difficult to do sweet and sour pork are both very good as well. Extra credit for a hard to find Chinese special of beef with black mushrooms (shitake, normally) and pea pods, called 'Double Winter Beef' as if it were a specialty of the Stark House on Game of Thrones. Kawa gets a 4 on the 'CTJ Scale' as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing on after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. This is a small place we found while waiting for our oil to be changed nearby. The owner, Howard, is very nice and makes sure to get your order right and that you are happy with it. We eat outside on the patio but its mostly take out customers. I cant pick one item because everything we've tried has been delicious. These include lemon chicken, mu shu pork, sesame chicken katsu, dumplings, egg rolls and sweet crispy fortune cookies among other things. This is a real Chinese restaurant, no sushi. Delicious Asian kitchen in Steiner Ranch! Picked up 30 minutes before they closed and the food was hot hot hot! We ordered a small wonton soup, vegetable fried rice, kung pao chicken, and mu shu pork. We loved it all! The portions are HUGE. While we're going to enjoy all of the leftovers, I feel like they'll last for days! Our only suggestion would be half orders for those who don't need the huge portions. :) Overall I would recommend this place! We're excited to go back and try more entrees. We have been going to Kawa for years but had never gotten take-out before which is a large part of their business. Because of Covid 19, we thought about Kawa to get a break from home cooking, and we were glad we did. We ordered from the lunch menu and paid on-line and had the combo fried rice -extra spicy- and the combo lo-mein. The combos had chicken, beef and shrimp. Lunches also came with egg roll and wonton soup or other soup choices. Of course sauces and fortune cookies were included. Meals were so large there are plenty of leftovers for tomorrow's lunch, plus they were fresh, delicious and reasonably priced. Service is always gracious and prompt. We are so glad to have Kawa in the Steiner Ranch neighborhood! read more

Ok, this is a sad update...the tofu dish is still good, but not long ago we tried a couple of chicken dishes...they were really NOT good. As in-- had to throw away after one bite. I don't understand the below avg reviews. I always order the egg foo young which many places don't have on their menu. I called to place an order for delivery. I initially asked for a seared ahi tuna salad and he told me they didn't have the sushi to make it. So I was in a bit of a rush and didn't have the menu in front of me so I just ordered shrimp spring rolls, a house salad with ginger dressing and a side of fried rice. What I got was a to go box full of Romain lettuce with a couple shredded carrots, shrimp spring rolls that were packed full of Romain lettuce and two pieces of shrimp. I expected a peanut sauce for the spring rolls and instead got hoisin sauce with a couple crushed peanuts on top. The only thing ok was the fried rice. When it was delivered it didn't have any silverware which I didn't even think to ask since it was a to go order. All around very disappointing. read more

Went for dinner tonight and tried the sushi and some of the Chinese food. The roll I ordered was YUM! It was a large portion inside out roll with spicy yellowtail and asparagus inside and tuna on top, the miso sauce served with it was flavorful. It was JUST as good as what I've had at Cho's and more reasonably priced. Also had the pan fried veggie dumplings (cooked perfectly). The chicken Lo mein was tasty with generous amounts of chicken and veggies- probably could use a little more sauce but still good. There really isn't fantastic Asian food in this area so I hope this place does well, its definitely better than anything else around. Service was friendly and attentive. read more

I've been to Kawa two times now and both times were very good. The selection on the menu is ridiculously large. Being as they just opened up, I would assume the menu may change, shift or even shrink as they are open longer and find their groove. As it stands now they have a wide variety of Asian and Chinese dishes, as well as a fully stocked sushi bar. The best part for me is that the offer anything Gluten Free, or at least it seems as if they are willing to try to make it Gluten Free. My first time I had chicken fried rice to test the waters as it were and it was very good. They obviously sub out regular soy sauce for gluten free and it worked out well! Last time I was able to have gluten free fried rice was in China because they don't use soy sauce their fried rice. My wife had a seafood stew type dish and according to her it was very good as well. The 2nd time I had gluten free kung pao and it was also very good. The serving size was generous and the flavor was very good and the spice level I'd expect from the dish. I haven't had Kung Pao in years and it was great to have a GF option. My Wife had a Pineapple chicken dish, and this is where the "willing to try to do gluten free" comes into play. This dish seems like it should've been breaded but it wasn't. It still turned out to be great. So this very encouraging that they are willing to do alternatives that while not identical to the original dish, they still come out tasty! read more

I have to say that my recent experiences with Kawa have been disappointing. I really loved this place when they opened. I still like their cooked food, so this review is mostly about the sushi. When you guys opened, you had an amazing sushi menu! The special rolls and sauces were so great, and loved the variety! However, since you hired a new sushi chef it's been so average. I ordered a yellowtail roll the other day and the yellowtail was all chopped and mushy. Usually it's a small piece if fish in the roll, not chopped like spicy tuna. It was weird. I ordered another roll that was supposed to have masago on it and there was none. It just feels like you're dropping the ball and it's making me very sad. Maybe you guys could add just a few special rolls and not use so little fish and so much rice. read more

Overall they seem to be consistently good. -----/ Update: Four stars to one star. Sadly. The quality of food has consistently declined. We have had chunks of hard salt in our food, copious amounts of vinegar in our steamed rice, hard chicken that was maybe cooked hours or more in advance and reheated or refried, etc. I kept giving them one more chance hoping the quality would go back up and was entirely too optimistic. I can't believe that the other reviews here are real. The place stinks. The SUSHI chef is Hispanic. The tuna tasted fishy. The salmon was OK. I have not tried the Chinese food. The prices are outrageous $6 for most Sushi. Most of the Chinese dishes are $11. The roll menu is way too wordy. They are trying to have cute descriptions. None of the rolls sounded good to me. I have never been to a Sushi place where I could not find at least one roll I liked. Why anybody would come here when Cho is less than a mile away and way better is beyond me. read more

I had the WORST experience of my life ordering delivery. 1. They over charged me for my curry shrimp. The menu said it was 10.95 but they charged 13.95 and when I showed them the menu, they did not refund. 2. The curry shrimp was mostly thin sauce and peppers. There were only a few pieces of shrimp. What a waste of money and I am still hungry. 3. My bf got the orange chicken. He had to spit out multiple pieces of chicken because it tasted like it went bad. Solid Asian food. Everything is very fresh. Our kids (4 & 6) loved the tempura chicken nuggets and teriyaki chicken. Staff is frequently and helpful and the food came out quickly. My only suggestion is for Kawa to offer another salad dressing option other than ginger dressing. Definitely coming back. read more
