I've eaten here a handful of times, mostly bland food and very underwhelming for the price.

Food is really good, probably top 3 on my list of vegan resteraunts. I had the Jamabalaya which was spicy and seasoned perfectly , I also tried a bite of the vegan blt and fries, although the fries were pretty burnt thethen sandwich sandwich wss good, I also tried the buffalo "wings", which is ny favorite out them all! Service was pretty good as well. My only cons about this place is they are a bit pricey and the environment feels to be anbit crammed in my opionion. Some people enjoy that environment, me not so much. Overall def recommend! read more

We had a wonderful meal on Saturday, as usual. A very large portion of mashed potatoes topped with a delicious stew of seitan, tofu and root vegetables was perfect on a cold blustery evening. I'm a vegetarian, so maybe I'm a bit biased in the land of pork roll, but I love Kaya's... love, love, love, love. I am there at least twice a month, sometimes more. I've been going for years, I love it, all my friends (carnivore and veggie alike) love it, it is just damn good food. I would recommend the Karma wings if you like spicy food, definitely. Otherwise, everything, and I mean literally everything on the menu is incredibly good. Easily comparable to Red Bamboo in NYC in terms of flavor and variety. Only problem is the price. Everything on the menu has gone up since the move, and even before that it was a bit pricey. But to me, it's worth it - plus almost everything on the menu provides you with enough food for two meals, so you can just get a doggie bag and consider it an investment in your future happiness. read more

This is my all time favorite vegan restaurant (and I'm not even vegan). I heard good things about this place and my boyfriend is vegan so we love finding new restaurants that he can eat at. We got the mac n cheese as an appetizer, and it was the best vegan mac n cheese I've ever eaten, a lot of people can't get the texture right. It is definitely big enough if you want to just have it as a meal. I got the pierogies as my main dish and my boyfriend had the soul seitan --both were excellent. There aren't many vegan restaurants around so kudos to Kaya's Kitchen for being an innovator. More people, not just vegans, should try a plant-based diet. Too many vegetarians and vegans are stuck eating lame (pre-made) veggie burgers and salads at traditional restaurants. There are some great items on the menu, some of my favorites include: tofu buffalo wings, Hungarian pierogis, and the Turkish Delight sharing platter. They also have a dessert case where you can pop in for cupcakes (some are even gluten-free) or some tasty ginger beer. They have a good band that plays in the evening on the weekend (I think Friday's). There is room for improvements: it's a bit pricey, more timely service (eat in and pick up), better decor (too dark and gloomy for a beach town), and more veggie options like the pesto vegetable tower that aren't trying to imitate a meat dish. Ambiance plays a huge part in the dining experience. I would love to remodel the restaurant - lighter paint color, white painted tables and chairs, better lighting, and photographs or some better themed decor- to make it more bright and airy and to encourage passersby to come in and learn more about the menu. Right now it feels like a hippie college student decorated it after a semester abroad, tribal masks, wall tapestries, and muddy brown and green paint. read more

Have been coming here for years and it never disappoints! Used to always get the country nuggets but as I've gotten older I've moved to more filling dishes. I got the Philly Cheesesteak, and also had some country nuggets. The rest of my family got the Jersey Devil. Fries were a bit soggy but the potato salad was very good. This is the best vegan restaurant I have ever been to! They have this appetizer called "The Kayas Combo" that comes with Tofu "Chicken Nuggets"... "buffalo wings" and "ribs"... plant based protein. IT IS DELIICIOUS, I literally have dreams about the nuggets! hahaha. Also the falafell is AMAZING and any of their salads/potatoe salads. YUM. Great kombucha on tap and amazing friendly service. I forgot to put up a review for Kaya's Kitchen. It took me a while to actually find the door to get in, tucked behind the steakhouse. Everything I ordered was amazing. Everything was to go so I won't post pictures due to my driving. Kaya's Combo was effin delicious, the "honey " mustard is incredible. The Jersey Devil- "Taylor Ham, Egg & Cheese" might be better than the real thing. The Junkyard Burger super tasty black bean burger. Great job, a little pricy those 3 items came to around $50 but sometimes you need to splurge on good food read more

This is my second at Kaya's Kitchen and both times I was very happy with my choices. I usually go at lunch time. They get a lot of orders for pick up. if you go in person it might take longer to get served at your table. If you are going on your lunch hour the best bet would be to call ahead your order so you can have more time to enjoy your food. The ambiance is very zen. The décor was very suitable and the lighting was dim and relaxing. So if you are vegan or follow a healthy lifestyle I suggest to give this place a try. read more

I went on a day trip to the beach on my own and wanted to find some good vegan food for lunch and found Kaya's Kitchen. When I got there, there was a kind and calm atmosphere and they were playing good music. On a nice day we decided to go to Kaya's Kitchen. Hadn't been there in years, but rememberer it was very good. Started off by sharing The Pesto Veggie Tower, not what we remembered but Good. My wife and I ordered a Soy Burger each. This was our favorite dish. Unfortunately, it was not the big Burger that we remembered. It was half the size and not as flavorful as the 'original'-Average/Good. We ordered the French Fries-Very Good/Excellent. Service was very good. The server Ryan was very attentive and accommodating, She always had a smile and contributed positively to the dining experience. Setting was pretty much as we recalled with some upscaled art work. I have eaten there many times, all seasons, and have loved it everytime. They have wonderful vegan choices--Healthy, fresh, and reasonable for the Jersey Shore. I live over an hour away, so at times, get takeout (we call in our order, and then drive down to pick it up). We've taken some serious meat eaters to Kaya's and they were all astonished at how much they enjoyed the food. The "cheese steak" sandwich tastes like the real thing (so I am told :) Service is always friendly, might be a little slow (not usually though), and reservations are recommended. Spacious and spiritual themed restaurant with the greatest tasting seitan I have ever had. Hats off to Kayas Kitchen. Suggestion: Offer more menu items before 5:00 PM to catch the starving lunch crowd. I have previously rated this restaurant 5 stars ,but i had to downgrade that to 3 stars now that it's summer . Whether for take out or at your table, they will make you wait at least 35 minutes longer than they promise . Additionally , it takes quite a while to be acknowledged by staff. I love Kaya's and eat here often, both dine in and take out. My aunt has been exploring vegetarian and vegan foods lately and wanted to try Kaya's. Unfortunately she has a TON of dietary restrictions, some of which include no gluten or soy. Our server was AMAZING and really worked with my aunt to figure out something she could eat. As a former server myself I know what a PITA people who want to make up their own menu items are. She was super patient and helpful though. I highly recommend eating here! read more

One star has been awarded for being a vegetarian/vegan restaurant in a carnivore world. Kaya, you aren't doing the cause any good by serving the food you do. Ah, remember the old Kaya's? Located in a depressing strip mall, with a seriously 60s hippy vibe, the place served really decent food. A few years ago, when they moved to more upscale digs (although still far from fancy), something happened. Something very bad. This review is based on three visits (we so wanted to like you!), each one more disappointing than the last, with focus on the most recent one(November 2014). After being seated by a semi-snotty server and having our table set while we were there, our appetizers arrived. The miso soup was nothing special either way, but the French Onion soup was pretty gross. Hidden under what looked like a slice of Arnold's Whole Wheat bread, topped with a gloppy glob of cashew "cheese", was the lukewarm soup. I'm not a cook, but even I could have come up with a better solution for topping off this bowl. The Seitan Ribs were a mess on a plate. Someone in the kitchen apparently thinks that covering food with sauce is cooking. For our main dishes (Country Seitan Club, Seitan Philly Steak, Falafel and Seitan Satay Kabobs), the Club and Philly Steak received mixed reviews, the Falafel was good - pretty hard to mess that up - and the Satay Kabobs were inedible. I would describe them as greyish looking seitan, once again covered in sauce that looked like baby poo. To add insult to injury, no one ever came around to fill our water glasses or see if we needed anything - and it was not a particularly busy time. Sorry Kaya's, Strike Three, You're Out. read more

I have been going to Kaya's for years and it has just gone more & more downhill every time I go. I went today and sadly, I will not be returning. I have eaten vegan comfort food all over and have a pretty good list of places to compare this to. Most of the food here is inedible. Every style sandwich is put on the same roll. If I order something like a cheesesteak, I want it on a sub roll. A Reuben on rye. You get the idea. The roll they give you is way too thick and consumes the whole sandwich. The tofu is extremely squishy and not prepared right. Someone really needs to revamp all of the food here. Sorry, Kaya's! read more

I live in Belmar and I want so much to love this place. I try again every so often but it's always a disappointment. My diet is 95% vegan (I'll eat fish once in while, but no dairy.) I've been to many vegetarian restaurants all over the country over the years and the best way to describe Kaya's is "vegetarian junk food." Don't assume that something like a side of kale is gluten free either. It's not. They insist on using what must be a store bought stock that contains gluten. The gluten free menu actually has asterisks here and there because some of the items contain gluten! The staff is super nice for sure and the lemon ginger salad dressing is really great but everything else I've had is fair at best. I have legitimate food allergies and they are not at all accommodating which is so weird for a vegetarian restaurant. There's even an odd comment on the menu 'if you're allergic to gluten or unicorns let your server know.' Having allergies is a huge bummer and I like to dine at places that take it seriously so I don't get sick! If you're accustomed to Blossom, Candle Cafe, One Lucky Duck and other awesome places in NYC this is going to be a huge let down. Head up to the Good Karma Cafe in Red Bank which is a thousand times better. read more

Kaya's is the kind of place that's alright, but has the potential to be so much better. I'll explain exactly what I mean. Central New Jersey is thankfully full of plenty of vegan and veg-friendly restaurants. We almost always cook dinner at home, but if we're in the mood to grab something out, we have at least three or four go-to options that are always reliable and awesome. However, if we want to go out for a fine-dining experience, we are pretty much out of luck. That's where my first issue begins... My first issue with this place is the false impression it gives. At first glace, Kaya's gives the impression of being a rather fancy or swanky vegan restaurant. The decor is beyond lovely, the ambiance seems quite nice, and the lighting is even dimmed to give it the look of a place that is perfect for dates and special occasions. Unfortunately, the overall atmosphere of the place is extremely casual, overtly so. The staff is sort of friendly, but again, far too casual. I might be okay with that if the place had a more casual look, but it doesn't. The seating arrangements are not exactly fantastic either; when I make a Valentine's Day reservation two weeks in advance I expect to be seated at a booth or at least an individual table, not on a bench with strangers. To me, this is unacceptable. Also, if you show your server a dirty fork, he or she should probably bring you a clean fork in under five minutes... just saying. My second issue is the pricing. If you're going to be an overtly casual restaurant, then please give overtly casual prices. I won't say anything against the food, but I've never been particularly blown away by it. It is certainly good, but if I'm dropping close to 100 dollars on a dinner, I should walk away wanting to write rave-reviews about the place. Instead I walked away feeling a bit annoyed that I spent so much on an otherwise mediocre experience. Once again, the food is decent, but I truly don't agree with what they are charging. To be completely honest, our favorite part of our last meal there was a cupcake... and they don't even make them themselves (Papa Ganache Bakery in Matawan supplies them). My third issue with this place is rather unique. The entire restaurant apparently took an impromptu vacation to India in January but failed to post about it on their website. My girlfriend and I wanted to celebrate our anniversary there, so we drove the 45 minutes south, pulled up in front, and saw the place was dark. Now, I'm not saying people aren't allowed to go on vacation, but I would be lying if I said that I wasn't angry that night. When I went back to check, they had posted about it on their facebook page, but I didn't think to check their facebook after already checking their main website the night before (which made no mention of any closure)... honestly, who checks facebook pages of restaurants to make sure they're open on a Friday at 6PM anyway? Over all, the place is okay, but a bit too pricey for me, given both the quality of the food and the service. I'd like to say we'll be going back, but we probably won't be. Needless to say, there are far better vegan restaurants in central New Jersey where we'd rather spend our money. read more

How excited was I when I found out that the B&B that the BF and I were staying at in Belmar was literally a block away from the only vegetarian/vegan restaurant on the Jersey Shore since the BF is vegan. Alas it was a bit disappointment. Not so much for the food but for the service. First for the food, which was good, flavorful, and there was a LOT of it. Seriously, they could have reduced the portion size by 25% on the mains. We started off on the Turkish platter which consisted of hummus, babaganoush(sp) (some of the best I've ever had), tabuleh, olives, cucumbers and carrots served with hot pita bread and olive oil. Very yummy and enough for three people to share. The BF had a mock steak, vegan mashed potatoes and roasted veggies and he seemed to enjoy it a lot (I thought it was ok but had a strange chew. I'm still getting used to faux meat dining.) I had the yellow curry with tofu served over brown rice. It was supposed to be served over brown rice noodles but they had run out of them (@7pm on July 4th weekend you would think that they would make sure that they would be stocked up so that they would not run out of one of the main starches that the mains were served with). Our friend that was with us had gr8illed veg skewers with bbq sauce served over brown rice. The vegetables were perfectly done but the bbq sauce over powered them and after eating about half of the dish the sauce just seemed too sweet. Now as to the service, it was shoddy at best. The place was crowded but there were three servers that had about 5 tables each ranging from deuces to 4 tops. There were no tables with more than 4 people seated and there were some empty tables but the wait staff looked and acted like every table was six seated with over demanding DB customers, which it most definitely wasn't. There were also two bussers and two food runners working that night, with a staff that fleshed out and with only about 75% capacity the service should have been much better than it was. It took a good 7 minutes to get water, another 7 to have our drink orders taken, 10 more minutes for our food order to be taken and another 5 minutes for the drinks to show up. That's almost 30 minutes after being seated for us to get drinks and our orders taken, way too long. The apps took 15 mins to arrive and the mains showed up 25 mins after that. We saw our waitress twice during the entire meal, once to take the order and once to give us the check. We had to ask another waitress for another round of drinks only to find out that they had run out of lemonade and had to brew more herb tea for our half-n-halves, so another 20 mins for our "iced" tea only drinks. I put iced in quotations because there was no ice in the glass since they poured the hot tea over the ice and it all melted and we ended up with luke warm tea. I would not normally ever go back to such a place again but since it is the only place where the BF can have the largest selection of food to order we had to go back for another meal. It didn't get much better than the experience above. I could pretty much live with the above, but the prices for the food is about 15% too much for what you get and waaaaay too much for the service. read more

NEVER NEVER NEVER GO HERE. EVER! - I and a friend drove in an hour from out of town 8/18/13 Sunday to take a friend out to lunch who'd had a book signing event (at the Paperback Exchange, whose owner recommended Kayas). We entered into a dark place. The sweet waitress explained that one plate was $16 and all-you-can eat was $22. There were two cracked plates for two of us, so the third person was relegated to a tiny saucer 'til the waitress found another cracked dingy plate. The buffet was tired limp tasteless food except for one hot dish. (I like spicy, but, not the kind where you just dump in hot sauce to cover the fact that you have no idea what to do w/tofu.) I was shocked at how bad and nasty the food was. The friend you drove in with me go so sick at the table that she had to excuse herself to wait outside while I enjoyed talking to my friend (and just avoided thinking about how terrible the food was). I thought it was weird that there wasn't soap in the bathroom or any way to dry my hands. Because I was hosting, I was too embarrassed to ask to see the manager to point out how dirty and and ill kept the buffet was and ask him/her to taste the unappealing looking items (since taste is the ultimate test). It all looked bad and tasted bad. I would have the manager to join me in the bathroom and ask him why s/he and the staff were in a place where they couldn't wash their hands. I would have told him one of the people at the table was so ill she had to exit the restaurant. I would have asked him why a restaurant that was so quiet was so dirty: clearly, they have lots of time to clean. They are obviously not cooking. I would have told him that a vegan fare in Manhattan would not have cost this much and if it did, it would have had to taste palatable. I would have asked the manager, "Why did s/he think it was okay to charge this much for such crud on cracked plates?" If I hadn't been hosting a friend, I'd have left after seeing the sorry excuse of a buffet regardless of the pricing structure. And, if I hadn't been hosting, and I had taken a seat, I would've returned the food immediately and left. Nothing edible = no charge. But, I was hosting and didn't want to make a fuss. My error. My friend was seriously ill the entire one-hour trip back home. The rest stop experience was "no fun." I figure this joint owes me $58. A ruined day in Belmar. Kaya Kills It. The waitress was sweet and wifty, genuine but clueless. When I told her there were no plates, while actually holding a cracked one, she replied, "Oh, we forgot to wash stuff up." Yipes, Yelp. what happened to this place ? We were there some months ago and everything was great.. Five of us went last Saturday and it was awful!!! Three onion soups were sent back, they tasted terrible with some awful cheese on top and what looked like a slice of rye bread dumped on top.the eggplant and pesto sandwich was tasteless and we were charged $1.00 extra for a tiny cup of extra pesto. Good friends and I have traveled from Northern NJ each summer to go to Kayas and have a beach day, however this summer we were sorely disappointed. While Kayas has maintained its eclectic and native vibe providing many vegan options, a recent change in menu left our wallets much lighter than anticipated with restrictions we had never experienced. Our normal order was the Nachos, Quesadilla, and Mediterranean-type platter but we found the majority of this order was now only available after 5 p.m. After shifting our order to the $11 black bean burger, we had resigned ourselves to paying the $3-5 for add-ons like onions or guac. However, it was only upon looking at our bill that we realized that the fries and potato salad sides that our waitress had offered were an extra $2 each. This would not have made a difference to us had we not been led to believe it was included with our already $13 burgers. When I asked our waitress, her only comment was "Well there is a note in the back of the menu," which we all clearly read as she offered us a side... In the end we paid almost $20 for a vegan burger and sub-par potato products. Kayas was a fan favorite of my friends and mine, but I think we will opt for meat and cheese the next time we go to Belmar... read more

super bonus credits for being vegan! that being said, a lot of the dishes are the same dish/food in a different form. i.e. my meatloaf with mashed potatoes and veggies was my brother's shepard's pie tossed. chef omer is admirable and creative though-- we had the kaya's combo (appetizer sampler) and everything tasted like what it was trying to be. the buffalo wings-- spicy buffalo-y flavor on a chunk of tofu (not a wingy texture or appearance). the soy nuggets-- great job with the taste, texture, and appearance. the ribs-- made of seitan strips was my favorite, and the potato salad-- straightforward and delicious. awesome dessert options (lots of (vegan) butter cream use), but so unfortunate that we were too full to try any! service is so very neo-hippie typical. translation: laid back and slow, but friendly. they sell merch too (none of which i was inclined to buy and i love that kind of stuff). it's hard not giving 4 stars to this place because we totally need them around, but the fact that i actually would think twice about returning is making me rate as just average but definitely not below! read more

My girlfriend's a vegan & I was psyched a totally vegan restaurant was local. The new location is very nicely decorated. Here are my gripes...we went to order take out. It took 1 hour for a cold salad and a portobella mushroom sandwich of some sort. The place wasn't busy, perhaps 3 maybe 4 tables. What I did notice was the 8-9 employee's working that day. Mainly because they all just walked around from front to back, to front to back. Some were cooks some were waitstaff, one was the owner/head cook, who spoke with a table for 20 minutes. I recognized him only because I re-read the review pasted on the wall with his photo 30 times while I waited. Dread locks, pierceings, tattoo's, I can handle....Koombia...it IS part of the Vegan alllure, it is certainly part of the uniform dress code here. What I wasn't ok with was the owner/head chef running his hands through his dreads throughout his conversation at the table 6 feet away from me. He also adorned what was once a white apron which may have been clean in the morning, but certainly looked as if it was not. I don't know, I can't say, I only know what I experienced. I suggest he have a chef jacket in back that is clean and professional, or take his apron off, should he decide to walk up front & speak with the guests...his clients...the ones paying the bill. it does and will make a difference. As I said the dreads, tats, & piercings I can deal with...a filthy apron only makes people wonder how long it's been filthy. The wandering kitchen staff at least had some form of hair control (bandana) but too adorned the same aprons. I've worked in kitchens for 5 years through college...I know aprons get dirty...fast...I also know at all restaurants I worked, you were not allowed on the floor wearing one....appearances DO make a difference. The person who took our order was polite. He asked what we would like to order, oops, left to get an order pad, returned, oops, hold on left to get a pen, returned, and took the order...the hostess talked to a friend on her cell phone, while a client waited to pay a bill, the others chatted about really enjoying their jobs...it is a mellow place to be...I'd say work, but I got the sense this was social hour with busy work to do....not work with socializing during slow times. I was frustrated with the sloppiness of the operation, the time it took, which gave me an unfortunate opportunity to "see & observe" how things were run. The owner/head chef said adieu to his "friends" and went back to "work" on the line....without washing his hands...we waited outside after that...I'd seen enough. Was back in the area last weekend...asked my girlfriend if she wanted to give it a second chance...she said she didn't feel well after eating there the first time...couldn't say if it was the food...just didn't feel like trying it again, which is truly unfortunate with so few vegan restaurants anywhere....instead we went to surf taco across the street for a veggie burrito. May be the same sloppiness at Surf Taco, but at least I didn't have experience what I saw at Kaya's. He's got a great market...what could and should be a VERY profitable business. I suggest he run his business more seriously, for Belmar CAN handle competition that will cater to this growing food movement. If you've got time to kill, can handle "oops" as an excuse, & don't mind visual uncleanliness, this is your place to be....perhaps medical marijuana might quell your stomach & make you not notice what's honestly going on. read more

A really refreshing place to go to considering beach fare tends to be fried and unhealthy. The menu is pretty big. Plenty of choices including dishes that would please the meat eater in your life. Vegetable appetizer served as of it were a pesto lasagna was perfect. Cheese dishes were tasty too - even considering the "fake" cheese taste. I'd for sure go back. read more

I hated my food but my daughter liked hers. I had the Turkish platter. The falafel was below average but it was basically the only edible item on the platter. I love all kinds of hummus but this hummus was gross. The baba ghanoush had a weird bitter taste.My daughter really liked her buffalo soldier. She's easier to please than me. I've eatten here many times before. Even back at the old location off 10th Ave. The staff here is rude. The food is nothing special and doesn't live up to it's potential. I'm over it. There are better vegetarian restaurants around. read more
