Definitely a hidden gem on this side of the island. Food is outstanding! I ordered the garlic chicken/Hamburger steak mix, the garlic chicken was very flavorful and topped with furikake for added texture and flavor which combined very well, the hamburger steak was topped with grilled onions and a delicious deep brown gravy, the Mac salad didn't have too much mayo and a side a cucumber namasu complimented the plate perfectly. They don't have a giant menu which I like, because they focus more on the quality of food coming out or the kitchen. With that said, there is a bit of wait when you order so it best to call ahead. The restaurant is located in the back of the small mom and pop store, which also have the best deal in booze on that side of the island. We ordered the pan fried ahi, furikaki garlic chicken, Locomoco omelette and big boy breakfasts. It was delicious. The flavors and taste of the food was satisfying. I got the pan fried ahi with miso sauce. It was really good and paired well with the Mac salad and pickled cucumbers. The ahi was a little dry, but the flavor distracted me from that dryness. The galore furikaki chicken was good too. Simple but so flavorful. The hamburger from the Locomoco omelette needed a little more seasoning and a little more gravy. I ordered the "local surfing turf" which consisted of coconut shrimp, Mac, rice and my personal favorite guava smoked pork. the coconut shrimp is breaded with a sweet coconut sauce. Drizzle which I thought was very unique, but not my favorite shrimp I've had on island. (Still 6/10) Mac was one of the better ones that I had (although I prefer a little more salt). Now the star of the show was definitely the guava smoked pork delicious!! I've never had something like that before, and I could taste the smoked guava in every bite. Was camping nearby decided to explore the area. Found this gem and to my delight they served breakfast! Ordered the dish with the smokies and eggs. The prices are super reasonable and food was good. They also serve lunch which I'll try to come back for another day because it all looked so ono. It's a convenience store with a kitchen. We got the loco moco and surf and surf on our day in the Northshore (we drove up from Waikiki) and it was soooo good and filling!! Great service from Bev, the store owner, got to chat with her a little about the history of her little family store. Once we got our food we sat outside on benches that were covered by an overhand (which was good because it was a little rainy). Kaya's is not much as far as store front but a great value with great food. Tucked in the back corner of a market along the Kamehameha Hwy on the left if going towards Laie, Kaya's offers a small menu with a big punch. This was one of those finds that resulted from a search and the reviews were spot on. We ordered a Loco Moco, Hamburger steak and a couple of Butter Mochi and Musubi...for three of us. Anyone that knows Hawaiian food knows this is probably enough to feed six. The food came out quickly and was awesome. We ate and ate and ate off of those plates to where we could hardly walk afterwards. The seating area is outside under a shelter and makes for a nice area to sit and eat. Service was super friendly. Oh, this was out first time trying butter mochi and we are definitely hooked! It sits in a small basket at the register and is about $1.99 per piece (if memory serves me correctly) and worth every penny! read more

The food is to die for and totally worth the drive wherever you're coming from, whether it's town or Wahiawa or Moanalua and anywhere in between. The butter mochi? I'm ruined because I can never have any other butter mochi thanks to Kaya's but everything about the store and kitchen is exactly like that - once you have Kaya's, you can never go back. I brought my Mom to have lunch and the garlic furikake ahi with miso aioli was gone before I could finish my drink! And even my Uncle and Grandma made the trek from Wahiawa because I couldn't stop raving about the butter mochi. But what makes the store amazing, besides the food, is Vern and Bev. You've never met two more down to earth and just genuine, sincere individuals in your life (no offense to my family and friends lol). They put their heart and soul into Kaya's and it shows... every inch of the store and kitchen has a bit of the Hashimoto's etched into the floors, walls, ceiling... when you're there, you don't know if you've fallen in love with the food, the ambiance, or Vern and Bev - but I definitely think it's all three! Cute little restaurant found in a supermarket. The food here is actually really good, but it's super heavy too. I came here after going to Kualoa Ranch for lunch. Be prepared to wait a while for the food; I think it's because they make everything fresh and not in batches. Furikake garlic chicken - 8/10 I got it with the brown fried rice. It tastes like a home meal, kinda like a terriyaki chicken stir fry with fried rice. (The fried rice contains sausage and spam; so if you're vegetarian, please beware). Located in Kaya's store is a little kitchen that sells local favorites and other dishes. Their menu is pretty small but there is enough to choose what you're craving. They also sell breakfast. We decided to stop here and try out their food. We were a bit confused because yelp took us to the store and once entering you can see the kitchen on the right. We ordered the chop steak and the furikake garlic chicken. Once we ordered you pay at the front in the middle of the store. We waited outside where there are benches to sit while you wait for your food. It didn't take to long before the food was delivered to us and we ate under the tarps by Aloha Shrimp. The food looked amazing. We opt for fried rice for both plates since many other yelpers like their fried rice and we were glad we chose it. It was really good. The chicken with the combination of furikake and garlicky flavor was so good it made me wanting more. The chop steak was okay. They do season the steak and vegetables and it is noticeable but not bad. The fried rice goes well with it. Everything was fresh hot, size was good for the price and the quality of the food was very good. Obviously a gem since it's not really noticeable. I would totally recommend their food. Living across the island it's not everyday we can stop by here but when we get the chance to we sure will again. kayas is a mom and pop shop that has been around since I was a kid . We always stop at Kayas if we're down at the beach and want some ono grindz , my other half and I love kayas so much so it was sad to learn today that aunty is no longer running the kitchen and that it is now being ran by new people. To our surprise we found out that there are also beepers now that let you know when your food is ready ( i did not like that) i get it makes servicing easier but it gives such a townie modern vibe and not a nostalgic mom and pop feeling . Also, the service was terrible, when we go aunty always greets her customers this new podagee looking lady didn't even say hello, or thank you as we finished giving our order just so rude as if she didn't care to be there. So many changes with the food too, the ahi omelette had so little fish , usually every bite has fish. The mac salad , don't even get me started on that. There's tuna in it now.... I also ordered the garlic shrimp and it's usually buttery and savory like the first pic below this time (second pic) it was straight up garlic salt and a dump load of parsley wasn't even made with butter just smothered in oil... even the namasu was bleh. Just overall sad and disappointed. I guess when there's new people filling in for years of experience you can't expect the same love when it comes to the food. We love our mom and pop shops and it's never easy seeing changes with food you once loved and was made with love . I hope the new people will care more in the future and not change the old recipes . Very cute mom and pops convenience store / plate lunch shop. I definitely wouldn't have known that they sell plate lunches if I didn't find this place through Yelp. Ordered the pan fried ahi with chili aioli and chicken stir fry. They give you a ticket that you take to the register to pay, and a buzzer for when your food is ready. At the register I also got some gushers and peanut butter cookies which were both really good! Although the fried ahi with chili aioli was delicious, I loovveedddd the chicken stir fry and loved that the Mac salad had tuna in it. You don't find the tuna in Mac salad very often now days. Took a drive out to Punaluu specifically to try this plate lunch shop. The sign at the entrance says "Celebrating 75 Years". The store is a blue wooden building adjacent to Kamehameha Highway. Parking is on a gravel lot to the right side of building which is shared with the Shrimp Shack lunch wagon next door. Upon entering the store you are reminded of other mom and pop stores in Hilo, Kapaa or Makawao. The store is small but clean, well-organized and the workers are super friendly! You order your food in the back right corner of the store and pay at the cashier counter in the middle of the store. We ordered the furikake garlic chicken, roast pork, NY steak and miso garlic chicken. We also picked up a couple of the butter Mochi which is near the cashier. Needed to pick up hand wipes, so I grabbed the last box of Wet Ones on the shelf. The lady at the takeout counter told us that we can wait outside on the benches and that she'd bring our order to us when it was ready. While we waited, we checked out the Thai and Vietnamese food trucks on the left side of the store. There is also a shave ice shop to right of the store and the shrimp truck in the gravel parking lot (on the right side of store). Lots of options for lunch. Our food was brought to us and we hopped in our car and took it to the beach park nearby. The food was fresh and tasty. My favorites were the roast pork and the NY steak. I didn't look at the photo well, so I was expecting the furikake garlic chicken to be karaage-style (deep fried). It was stir fried with garlic and onions, still tasty and much healthier than the deep fried version. Ha ha. We enjoyed our lunch from Kaya's and you can't beat the picnic location right on the beach (a minute's drive away) with the sun shining down and fresh smell of salt air in the wind.
