This is the first review I have ever left because my hair did not come close to how I wanted it. I purchased the Groupon for balayage, cut, and blow dry. Since I had box dye in my hair, he informed me it would be an extra $70 for a color correction. After getting price estimates from other salons, this seemed like a decent price for my budget. I did my research and looked over his website, Yelp reviews, etc. and the photos impressed me and led me to believe he would produce the balayage I wanted. I didn't mind the price for everything I was getting. I sent David photos of how I wanted my hair a few months before I scheduled the appointment. I have been saving up money and planning this treatment for five months which is perhaps why I'm so upset about the original results from my first appointment. When I walked in he briefly welcomed me and then immediately asked me what I wanted done. Since I've been planning this treatment for so long I had a Pinterest album of similar balayages (not to mention he already had the photo in our thread). He took one glance and got started which made me nervous but I trusted him as a professional. Throughout the treatment there was no communication regarding color, length cut, or anything like that. We sat in silence for 80% of my 3 hr. appointment. We made small talk and I asked him about after care, what he was putting in my hair, etc. He curled my hair and when I turned around and saw my hair for the first time I noticed it was WAY lighter than I expected, but I did like it. I left the salon happy. But I never curl my hair so when I saw it natural (wavy/straight), I could see how messy and amateur it looked. There were chunks reaching up to my roots and he basically dyed the bottom half of my hair a rainbow of blonde colors. NOT a balayage. I left a short review on the website and he text me shortly after with a long reply. I sent him photos of how my hair looked and the photo I originally sent him of what I wanted. He offered to fix it for free, so I went back in. Before my appointment he text me to confirm and said "Would be great if you could take down your review," but I'm glad I waited until after the second appointment to review him again. This time the communication was better, however now that a day has passed I see that my hair is still not where I want it to be since he bleached the whole bottom half and effectively made it difficult to achieve a balayage with just toner. I do understand that I did tell David I liked my hair in the salon because at that point I was fed up and wouldn't bother to have him fix it since he already comped this appointment and spent his time fixing it. Overall it looks much better now and is healthy after I cut 4 inches off (which I did to get rid of the dead bleached hair), but I am still going to get it fixed by another hair dresser. Not only that but I asked him for long layers in my hair cut but my hair is all one length. At the end of the day, if you go to David, just make sure you are clear about what you want because otherwise from what I can tell in other reviews he is a good hairdresser. read more

I have had my hair cut by DJ since moving to San Diego three years ago and there's a reason for that. Aside from DJ being a hilarious and wonderful human, appointments are easy to make, run on time, and are fairly priced. DJ cuts and styles my hair perfectly every single time, which is no easy feat as I have been let down by many stylists before. I have curly hair which has been butchered by stylists in the past but DJ knows how to skillfully cut and blow it out. My 200th review goes to David M, who is definitely one of the best hair stylists that I've had so far. I found a groupon with him, and since I was looking for a new hair stylist, I decided that it would be good to check him out. David was very attentive in listening to what I want, though I feel like it would be a bit easier if I had also shown him some inspiration pictures. He asked about what I didn't like about my past stylists, which was the first time anyone has asked me, so that he could take note on the things not to do. He kept asking me questions throughout the process to make sure that I'm getting my hair cut the way that I want it to. I do recommend coming in with a solid idea of how you want your hair to be cut and styled, so that he knows exactly what to do. I was a bit unsure of myself because I don't know exactly what looks good on myself, so I could have been better with that. He uses the StyleSeat website to coordinate all his appointments, and for a regular client, it's super easy. You choose your date and time straight from the website, and you pay directly through there too. After your appointment is done, StyleSeat will message you to ask if you want to add tip, and your entire bill will be charged directly through that. HOWEVER, if you use the groupon, you will not be charged anything from StyleSeat, not even the tip, even though it says so. Even with the groupon, StyleSeat will ask you to add tip, and confirm it, and I think that's where some people might have left it at that. You won't be charged anything from StyleSeat, because he basically cancels everything on StyleSeat since you already paid for the groupon. If you used a groupon, you will have to tip him separately. If I had to criticize anything though, even though this is a bit small, one of the impressions that I got from him was that he doesn't seem too fond of it if you use a groupon with him, though it's understandable, and I think that it's also because people can easily walk away without tipping, as I explained above, though that's just me assuming. He questioned why I decided to use a groupon and although the answer I gave him was also true, I suddenly felt ashamed if I were to tell him that I'm actually just a cheap, broke person and I'm always looking for good deals. David works pretty quickly on his cuts, and he is by far one of the most attentive stylists I've gone to. I will be a repeat client, and I highly recommend checking him out if you're looking for a stylist, just be sure to make note of the things I mentioned above. I also recommend getting a time slot towards the beginning of the day, since I see that some other reviews have complained about falling behind on schedule, though it's not really something that he can control. Just left my appt with David... Soooooooo, found him on Groupon of all places, and actually went with him because he's in my office building (Idea1 in East Village). All I can say is THANK YOU GROUPON!!!! First of all, David is ADORABLE! He's a really NICE, quiet (compared to me, which isn't difficult) fellow who makes you feel tremendously comfortable to talk to about your wants and needs (which of course is super important when you are trusting someone with your massive head of hair). The shop is modern and clean, also an absolute imperative. I told him in consultation that I wanted him to make me look like a Victoria's Secret model, you know, as best as possible when you're a 40-something 5'5" Mom. I showed him my gnarled up mess of hair, gave him license and let him go for it! The wash was a vacation! Head massage, relaxed and beautiful. His product was fantastic, smelled sooooo good! Then he got to chopping off the nastiness that was 4-months of split end growth. OK, if you have a ton of hair, you'll appreciate this: His work is super clean, super fast! If I could rate this stylist a zero I would. I purchased a deal online for a basic trim. No color no fancy cut just a basic trim. On his website he recommends to send him a photo of your hair so he can give you an idea of the pricing and if he can do it. So I thought I'd follow the directions and send him a picture of my hair. I told him I just want a trim nothing more than an inch. The response I got from him flabbergasted me!. He said my hair looks thick and there may be an up charge of $15 for it. I understand this if I was getting color or requesting special products in my hair but I wasn't! Just because I got a deal online doesn't mean you can jack up the prices and come up with these absurd reasons. I don't recommend this place. If he up charges for a trim imagine the other reasons? I've never written a review and I wasn't going to write one for this either but this has been a terrible experience. I found out about David through my roommate who got her hair done by him a few months ago. I'm new to San Diego so I decided to get my hair done from him since my roommate's hair looked nice. I had sent some photos to him about what I wanted and he told me it would take two appointments to reach that color. I didn't really care too much if it looked like the photos or not, I just wanted to look blonde. He told me that I had to get color correction done because I had previous color in my hair. So I booked the appointment and total charge was to be $200. When my hair was finished, at the place I liked it bc I could see that it looked blonde and I was happy about it. I forgot to ask to see the back because I was a little bit taken back by the new color. But as I was driving home I brought all of my hair over my shoulder and saw that a lot of the hair wasn't colored. So once I got home I checked my hair from the back and saw that more than half of my hair had not been colored at all. I had a huge chunk of brown hair at the back. Also when I got home and asked my roommate about her appointment, (she also had dark brown hair as me and went blonde), she told me her appointment was 5 hours whereas mine was only 3 hours. Yes my cost was less than hers but had I known that only half my hair would be colored for $200, I'd rather have paid more and sat for 5 hours and got all my hair colored. When I texted and asked David about it he told me 1) He divides up his appointments in two sessions so it saves me money and time, which is not something he told me before my appointment. He told me it would take two appointments to reach the color I wanted but not that I would have to make two different appointments for two halves of my hair. Why would I want to walk around with only one half of my hair colored? 2) He said that no one can see the back hair, which is such an unprofessional thing to say. All the hair should be colored. And the brown hair is very much visible at the back. I can't put my hair up or do anything other than leave it down. He basically colored the hair around my face and just the top of my head. I didn't want to argue with him too much though. He told me he'll color the rest of my hair for $75 more instead of another $200. I agreed because I just wanted my hair fixed. I wanted my hair fixed before July 31st because it's my birthday. After the June 29th weekend (which is when I got the hair colored) I had some free time only on July 27th weekend so I decided to book the appointment on his Instagram page. He then texts me saying how he is out that weekend and I have to move my appointment to another time. This is when I got really angry because that day was available on his calendar and if he was going to be away that weekend he should've made that clear on his booking site and I would've found time and booked for an earlier weekend. I asked if he could do after 5pm on weekdays since I'm at work all morning and I have not gotten a response. I don't even care anymore. Yes I understand that he probably doesn't work late on weekdays, but it was his mistake to begin with. He should be willing to take the time out and fix it especially if a client has a certain occasion coming up for which they expected to have all their hair colored properly (the first time!) instead of looking like a skunk. I won't be getting my hair fixed from him anymore because he's just really really bad at communicating and I don't want to waste any more time and money with him. Now I have to find another salon to get the rest of my hair colored and it is just really frustrating. read more

When I arrived it seemed like there were 100 places he would rather be and that he was irritated I was taking up his time. Yes, it was 7:00 but I had scheduled an appointment at 5:30... This is where things went very wrong. David asked me for a picture of my hair to seeing he could take me on as a client. I was a little taken back by this. I've gotten my hair done dozens of times and have never been asked this before. I felt like if this was a requirement of new clients, he should include this in the fine print of the Groupon. It made me feel like if my hair didn't look a certain way or wasn't to his liking, he would deny me service. I did send a picture to him, while questioning why this was necessary- which is my right to do so if I am uncomfortable with something. David replies to me and said that I was off putting about sending him a picture and proceeded to say that he thinks it's a good idea if I ask Groupon for a refund. So based on my experience with David I cannot give him a good recommendation. I will never be going back to David got my brazzilian blowout 7 weeks ago and saw no difference on my hair i also purchased the brazzilian blowout shampoo from him all it did was dry my hair out and itchy scalp. After 4 weeks i started to get open wounds on my scalp and bleadding. I don't know if he didn't use the right chemicals and just had the bottles there and filled them up with something else or what but this have never happend to me before. I was looking at the Groupon offered and, as any potential client with serious interest would do, I read through all the reviews. I was happy to see a lot of people were happy with the results HOWEVER, I also read his feedback on those reviews. The obvious pattern was that he only replied to one and two star reviews and in every case he bullied and belittled the poster by insinuating they were uneducated because they made a simple typing error or didn't read the fine print justifying why he would charge extra for toner when doing highlights. That's the equivalent of selling you a car and charging you extra to throw in the tires. You can't have one without the other if you plan on standing by your product. There seemed to be a lot of chatter about hidden fees once you get there and he repeats over and over how he is a small business and has bills like everyone else but being sneaky and bullying people for an honest review is just mean.
