Kazu has been making the best Sushi in a 60 mile radius for years! I prefer to sit at the sushi bar and watch Kazu and his crew work. The sushi is always fresh and the price is great for the quality and quantity. I enjoy the Edamame as an appetizer as well as the cucumber or seaweed salad. Kazu has hot food as well, and there are a couple combinations that i enjoy as well. The business hours are different from most restaurants, so check before heading there. Out of the different Japanese restaurants that I've been to in New Port Richey, Kazu's is by far the best in my opinion. Food is always top notch, service is always friendly and attentive, and the ambiance is always so comforting and inviting. Even as Downtown New Port Richey continues to evolve, the one consistent thing is how good Kazu's is. I got the Pork Katsu-Don and it was delicious. Portion size is really generous, with a thick and hearty pork chop and a very generous portion or rice. You definitely won't leave feeling hungry after eating the entire contents of the bowl. I've been going here for years and absolutely LOVE this restaurant!! Their staff is always excellent, and even my friend with a rare allergy that made them have to do some research didn't fluster them. They are quick and attentive. These folks get everything RIGHT, and their care for the little details really shines. They make the food taste exactly like it does in Japan, which is VERY rare in this area. And the food is amazing! When I bring friends that ask me "what's good here?", I say "everything" and I really mean it. I usually get a ramen bowl, and never manage to finish it because their portions are quite generous. It reheats well for lunch the next day. It has indoor or outdoor seating, and both are comfortable. Parking has never been too difficult, though you SHOULD plan a few minutes for parking/walking if you're meeting someone there. I came in on a Wednesday night about 7:45 PM. Sat down at the sushi bar. Someone greeted me, brought over the menu, a plate, soy sauce bowl and a napkin. She said my server would be over soon. The restaurant had a large group across multiple tables, another group arrived and pushed two tables together and there were 4 of us at the sushi bar. My server, the wife, arrived and asked what did I want to drink. I placed my drink order and off she went. A few moments later she returned with my drink and took my dinner order. I eat sashimi weekly at multiple, long standing sushi restaurants in the Tampa Bay area, so I started off with the sashimi appetizer. Kazu's fish was noticeable more tender and the delicate sweetness of the fish more present. I asked about the "Spicy Tuna Nachos". This dish was quite tasty and fun to eat. It is similar to tuna tartare with chips at other sushi bars. I finished off with the "Firecracker". This is made with pressed rice, not rolled rice. Kazu's rice seems to be more tender. I noticed that the "rice-to-fish" portion is smaller than any other Tampa Bay sushi bar, creating a better eating experience. Rice is used to compliment the fish and it's flavor in Japan. From their website... "Kazunobu Miyazato has more than 47 years experience as a sushi chef. A descendant of the Samurai Warriors of Japan, Kazu was born on the island of Okinawa and trained in Tokyo". Kazunobu's Samurai heritage and training are present in the details that set this sushi bar apart from the rest. I throughly enjoyed being served by such a dedicated sushi chef. Food was good. Sushi was well made and the prices were good. Little bit lacking on non sushi items and was a bit of a struggle to get others of my party feed. Wait staff was on point even though it took over 30 minutes to get our sushi out to the table as the chef was in the weeds. Non sushi items were out in approximately 15 minutes. We've been coming to Kazu's for well over a decade! It's forever my favorite sushi restaurant. The quality of food is excellent and you can't beat the prices. Most visits I order the two roll combo that comes with a cup of miso soup all for just $10.50. Call me basic or predictable but I don't care I always get the Mexican Roll and Japanese Bagel it's my favorite thing. On a recent visit I took my boyfriend there for the first time. He's taken me to other sushi restaurants around tampa bay and I also say "we gotta go to Kazu's!" He tried the Ramen and said it's some of the best he's ever had... that's coming from someone who lived in Japan for 6 months. Needless to say, he's sold and wants to come back for more. My sushi came out 20 minutes before my wife's dinner I think waitress forgot to put in her dinner order from the kitchen. I worked here as a server for a little under six months before quitting and will never eat here again, primarily because I know what goes on behind the scenes. Kazu treats his employees very poorly, except for a select couple of people who are obvious favorites. My money was constantly threatened (like losing tables for the simplest of mistakes) and my opportunities for making more money were almost always based on the hierarchy of favoritism, not how well I actually performed my job. Besides the absurdity of the blatant favoritism, we got shouted at and scolded for every single little thing and were CONSTANTLY, obsessively micromanaged. Nothing was ever right, ever good enough for Kazu. At the best of times, his communication with us was passive aggressive and at the worst, it was either nonexistent (he made his long-time server communicate with us instead of doing it himself) or it was borderline hostile. All of my fellow employees were very hard-working, kind, decent humans though, which is truthfully what kept me there for so long. I was told by an outgoing employee when I started working there that people very, very rarely make it past a year because of the poor treatment. I am also aware that in the past, they lost a lawsuit against employees for making them work off the clock. Kazu puts on a good public face, coming off as this nice, friendly, Christian man, but he also isn't kind to his customers behind the scenes. I heard him bad-mouth many people, he was constantly grumping about almost any special requests or inconveniences, etc. I once had him come in the back to shout at me in my face after he overheard me asking the kitchen to put someone's chicken teriyaki in a bowl instead of on a plate (it was how they asked for it because they wanted it all saucey/mixed up) which he refused to do because it would be "too saucey"... Which eventually ended with me having to apologetically tell the customer that I could bring it to him on a plate and he could put it in a bowl himself, which is exactly what ended up happening, which did nothing but waste extra dishes and probably earn me a smaller tip... One of the last straws for me was when a long-time friend/customer (who is beyond old enough to be my father) decided to stalk me on social media, came in looking for me multiple times while I wasn't working (on days that his wife wasn't with him), and then eventually asked me out in the middle of a rush. It made me extremely uncomfortable and when I explained what happened simply to ask that I not have to serve him when he came in anymore, I was told that it was my fault because I was "too friendly" with people and it "gets me in trouble" and that I needed to just "be less friendly with him next time." As for the food, some of it is decent, but most of it comes frozen or packaged and is not at all what you think you're getting. I did like some of the sushi (which I had to pay full price for if I wanted to take any home) but cannot support this place ever again after knowing what I know. If you care about how a place treats their employees, please do not eat here. read more

No matter how often my wife and I say we are going somewhere else for date night the car seems to drive itself here. Our favorites are the Atlantic and the Texas rolls. Tonight with a party of 4 we waited 25 minutes before anyone bothered to take our drink order. We were also told many of the items in the menu were not available because they didn't have a sushi chef. Because of this, 2 of us ordered entrees and 2 ordered sushi. Do not go here. Was told at the door would be a 45-60 minute wait if we ordered sushi and none of the special dishes would be available. Thought this was okay because all the reviews seemed favorable, we were wrong. 25 minutes after being seated we were finally given our water and order was placed. An hour and a half later we got what was the most disappointing roles ive ever eaten. Under the diameter of a quarter and tasted like canned tuna. Just rice and tuna. We should have payed for our drinks and walked out then but it had been 2 hours since we arrived and were desperately hungry so we ate. At this point there were only 10 people left in the restaurant who we all overheard complaining about the service. Can't stress enough how bad this place is. Oh and there AC seemed to be broken as well, which was great because our server Mimi could only be bothered to bring us water once and we still had to ask for the check to get out of there in under 3 hours. read more

We've eaten at Kanu multiple times. The food is very good. If we were only discussing food, I would give it five stars easily. The problem is the restaurant itself. While it's very pretty inside, it's so loud inside the restaurant we could barely hear each other speak. The last time we went the cacophony gave me a headache. There are a few problems. 1) So many people are crammed into one room 2) There are no soft furnishings to dampen the noise and echo of everyone talking 3) the tv's on the wall only add to the confusion. It just ruins the whole experience to leave with a headache. We ended up taking everything to go because it's impossible to relax with what sounds like the din of war going on around you.
