My first time here for a casual lunch with some friends, but a regular spot for them, and now I definitely can see myself coming back! The location is within a shopping plaza, so parking is plentiful, and when we arrived around 12:30 on Sunday, there was no one else dining in at the moment, but there did seem to be a consistent flow of take out orders. There were three of us today & we all started with the miso soup. It came out quite hot, had a good flavor profile, just a bit unbalanced with far more seaweed than tofu or green onions in there. One in our group ordered a hibachi meal, which also came with a ginger salad that she seemed to enjoy. Her hibachi portion was very large; honestly you could easy eat half & keep half for leftovers (which she did), or split one order between two people. She opted for the chicken & said it was her go to. My other friend got one of the sushi rolls, and admittedly I forget which one, but it was one she also got regularly when she ordered from her. I went with the Alaskan and roll and the Unagi roll. Both were average portion sized with 6 medium sized pieces per roll, and were quite fresh. We didn't try any of the alcoholic options, but it did look like they had a variety to pick from. Our servers were attentive, no complaints there! Earlier I mentioned it was fairly empty, but they all stayed busy keeping the place clean, working to-go orders, and had an easy-going vibe as well. As a snow bird part year resident, this is one of the few restaurants that are on our 'must eat at list' when we are down here each spring for a few months. We now eat here at least monthly! The first time we ate here about 10-12 years ago we were initially disappointed they don't cook the hibachi meal in front of us, like most do. However, when eating we quickly realized that we can do without the 'show' and that the food quality, flavor and portion size was unsurpassed by any other Japanese restaurant we have been to! When arriving, now we are old friends, they remember what we usually order, how we like things cooked and what vegetables to serve or or not serve, and how to prepare the dish, which helps prevent waste. Basic sushi restaurant. The raw salmon and raw tuna nigiri I ordered was very fresh and nice size portions. The ginger and wasabi were high quality. The greeter and server were very friendly. The decor was nice but not exceptional. Parking was convenient since they're located in a strip mall. Since the restaurant is rated 4.5* on YELP, I was expecting something exceptional and I didn't find that. The dressing for my avocado salad was brought in a squeeze bottle, which turned me off. Both the dressing and the salad were ordinary. I wouldn't give iceberg lettuce 4.5*. If you live nearby or are looking for a sushi restaurant along Route 19, this restaurant might be perfect for you. I stopped because I was driving south on Route 19 from Holiday FL to Sand Key FL. I would stop here again if I'm in the neighborhood but would not go out of my way to visit. read more

A great place to get a sushi kick for lunch! I'm a little surprised, but all the sushi places around me are closed for lunch. I was looking on a Sunday so maybe they are open for lunch other times, but this was shocking to me. Luckily Shogun opens at 12:30 (which I still find a little late, but I'll take late sushi instead of no sushi). I put in an Uber Eats order that morning for it to arrive between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. (which I thought might be pushing it since the restaurant opens at 12:30 p.m., but hey, it was an option). The food ended up arriving at 1:07 p.m., which I'm not mad about, close enough. We ordered: Sushi and sashimi for two, Honey Roll appetizer, Agedashi tofu appetizer, one order of Mackerel, one order of Tobiko and Steak and Chicken Hibachi. It came out to about $150 including tax and tip, but it was a ton of food. The sushi and sashimi for two was huge. I love the color dragon roll, I thought that was a great inclusion to balance out all the raw fish. They do salmon really well, I found the salmon to be super fresh, which is my favorite fish. For me, it ended up being too much raw fish (I know, is there really a thing?) so I definitely fulfilled my raw fish craving. Next time I'll go back to rolls. I finally found the honey salmon roll I had before. It turns out it is under sushi appetizer. I remember absolutely loving it last time. I still liked it, but I found it a bit too sweet. Maybe my taste buds have changed. It was good, but not a must get for me. The agedashi tofu was really good. It is sliced thinly and lightly fried. I actually got it to see if my son who is a super picky eater would like it. He spit it out, so that was a no go, but that's more for me. My husband liked his hibachi. I mistakenly said this was from the same place we got last time (which now looking at Yelp reviews, turns out it's not) and he said this time it was better. Score 1 for Shogun. If future Christina is reading this, next time Brandon wants to try the steak and shrimp. Everything was packaged beautifully. I just wish they would put the hot stuff and the cool stuff in separate bags, but I noticed every place does this, so they're not unique with how they put it all together. read more

We went to Shogun on Christmas because I saw Hibachi on their menu. I was thinking it would be a hibachi experience, but its not. This restaurant is more of a strip mall place. There is no hibachi/teppanyaki traditional cooking in front of you. Its a sushi place (with decent sushi) that also serves hot food that apparently is made hibachi style. We ordered to-go online and got a Mexican roll, spicy girl roll, spicy scallop roll and a vegetable yaki soba. The place was nice inside and our food was ready to go when we arrived. The yaki soba was the highlight of the meal. Generous portion and the noodles were very well prepared. The sushi was pretty good as well. The Mexican roll's cream cheese tasted more like the filling of a crab rangoon than the typical chunk in most rolls, which was a welcome surprise. We came here today (I hadn't been here since way before Covid, so it had been quite a while!) The amount of food we got for what we paid was incredible. For the crispy jalapeño appetizer, a kani salad, and two lunch specials containing a total of 4 rolls and 4 pieces of nigiri (which came with soup or a salad) we paid around $50. For good quality sushi I'd say that's a huge bargain. Service was quick and friendly, and the restaurant is very clean and decorated really nicely. It's in a strip mall so there's a ton of parking. Onto the food. The crispy jalapeño appetizer is okay, but we were hoping it'd be better. The breading on the outside wasn't very flavorful and we ended up pulling the jalapeños out and eating them without the breading. The kani salad is good but it's probably 75% cucumber which just wasn't what I was expecting. Still delicious but if you're not a cucumber fan, I'd skip this. The sushi was good! I also really liked the miso soup that came with my meal. My favorite of the rolls we ordered was the spicy tuna but all 4 of the rolls were really fresh. The nigiri was good, not fishy at all. The menu was posted in the window and I noticed that the had a LOT of sushi selection - The husbeastie was pleased, and there were other options which made me happy. Inside the place was very pretty. The decor was very well done and we were lead to a small booth so that we could peruse the menu. We ordered our drinks - Iced tea and green tea, which were served quickly. We started our meal with Goyza and then placed our order for our mains. I opted for the Tempura Chicken - Which came with 6 pieces of chicken, 5 peices of veggies, a salad, soup and rice. The plate had a LOT of food with it and it was tasty. It was some of the lightest tempura I've ever eaten. The husbeastie had a sushi platter that had 6 pieces of sashimi, a California roll as well as soup and salad. By the way he ate it, I'd say it was good. And here this whole time I thought Denver was food hell. Lmao. Tampa is REALLY food hell. Finding a restaurant here that lives up to it's Yelp reviews is like finding an honest politician. Salad was more like cereal as it was drowning in dressing (see picture attached). Sushi was average and overpriced. Not fresh enough or tasty enough to justify the prices. Kids meals were skimpy and bland. Our waitress Really had no clue; every time we would ask her a question, she would say "hold on" and she would run over and ask somebody and then come back. Obviously she was brand new. If you are brand new, should you not be working with somebody until you figure it out?That was very annoying. I've said it 1000 times: Yelp reviews do not tell the true story. You can purchase five star reviews all day long. I own a business and I get solicited constantly from people offering to enhance my profile with many fake reviews. It's all a big joke. Now it's my fault for not realizing "hibachi" was the method of cooking vs. "hibachi style gas-heated hotplates are integrated into tables around which many people (often multiple parties) can sit and eat at once." So I was disappointed they just just cooked everything in the back. Just in case anyone else thinks the same thing. But their food was really great and the lunch specials have a lot of food for a good price. I saw a lot of takeout being picked up, but we ate in, and it has a really nice, elegant ambiance. I got scallops, miso soup, salad with ginger, veggies and rice for about $13. Also got a shrimp tempera roll for the table which was big and everyone could have an enjoyable portion. The scallops were so big and delicious. Service was good although they didn't bring forks at all and we had to ask (especially for the kids, they have no chopstick skills) and we didn't get enough and ended up sharing. Are people really adept at eating rice with chopsticks? I guess they don't want to set out forks that no one uses, but I imagine people use them more for them to only be available on request. So all the food was good and reasonably priced, so I would recommend this place, but don't get your hopes up if you want them to make that little onion volcano in front of you. read more

We ordered the yellowtail app, tuna tataki, spicy Kani salad, several rolls (Palm Harbor Roll, Sunny Roll, Green turtle, spicy girl, torched scallop, color dragon, fire dragon) beef fried rice and the sashimi deluxe. I just got hibachi lunch based on a facebook post.... it was $20 for hibachi filet. The veggies and meat were hot and good, meat portion was chintzy for that price. The "fried rice" was NOT EVEN WARM. I don't know what day they made that, but it was not fresh. The salad tasted weird. I threw the rice out because it had not been kept at a proper temp to avoid bacteria..I ordered at 130 in the afternoon, with only 2 people actually in the restaurant, so it wasn't like they were too busy to cook my order. They said it would be ready for pickup in 15, and I arrived 5 minutes after that.... why the heck didn't they spend the extra 10 minutes to refry the rice to an appropriate temp? Or better yet, make fresh rice. I spent a lot for a few pieces of steak and some zucchini. Try another place for lunch, or maybe go sit inside to dine. read more

This place has all you can eat sushi rolls, but if you are going to do that deal, you need to ask for that particular menu. The all you can eat menu is just a piece of paper and they don't give it to you when you sit down or mention it when you come in. I saw reviews about that deal, and just thought to give my 2 cents from my experience. On to the rest of the review. I don't remember the names of the rolls but I really liked them. One was raw and had fresh jalapenos in it and the other was deep fried. Also orders the salmon avocado salad...Sooo good. We ordered it because we saw a photo of it online, but I didn't even see it on the menu- we just asked for it.its like having salmon shashimi in a tangy-sweet-vinegar sauce with avocado and cucumbers. Very fresh and refreshing tasting. Server was nice. We had already ordered the salmon avocado salad when we asked about the all you can eat deal. He brings us the menu. Everyone at the table has to get the deal, so we just got rolls. He tried to talk us out of it it seemed. That was weird. This place looked new and had a nice atmosphere too. We were debating on going to 3 different sushi places tonight and after reading the reviews on yelp in regards to the all you can eat sushi we opted for shogun since my husband was starving. I had read the reviews stating to ask for the all you can eat sushi menu because they do not offer to give it to you with the regular menu. We arrived around 6pm and to my surprise there were not busy which was a plus for us. We sat down, I asked for the menu and was told no they didn't have it. I was disappointed since that is why we choose Shogun but I quickly got over it. We ended up ordering 5 rolls for the table to share: 1. Sweet potato roll - was delicious 2. Spicy salmon roll - amazing 3. Volcano roll- yummy 4. Palm Harbor roll- not too bad prob won't order again 5. Shrimp tempura - pretty good We also order 4 Sapporo's and a soda. The bill was $67, not too bad since we did order 2 specialty rolls. Both waitresses were nice and attentive. I would rate the restaurant 4 stars and I would go back but...... I got home and was looking through my mail.... and wow.... found an advertisement for Shogun all you can eat sushi... with a lunch coupon that expires on 7/15.
