The problem with expectations is that they can be too high. Take KBC: it is owned by the chef who won Top Chef Kentucky. To me, that raises the bar and raises expectations. So when most of the dishes sightly missed the mark, and service was downright odd, it leads to a 4 star rating and not 5. We went for brunch on a Saturday and arrived just as it opened. The physical space is open and inviting and is in what appears to be a renovated building. This is not a sit down restaurant. Instead, you grab a menu at a table inside the door and you wait on line to order at the counter. They give you a number and you find a seat, inside or out. After ordering, you also need to grab your own drinks and silverware. We decided to try 3 dishes: the Folsom Prison Blues is a chicken and waffle dish with bacon and syrup; the Skillet hash has brisket with potatoes, vegetables, eggs and a "biscuit;" and the Pep+Pim biscuit has ham, pimento cheese and pepper jelly, served with grits. The chicken and waffle was good, but the waffle was on the soggy side and the syrup had a weird skin on top, as though it had been sitting out for a while. The chicken itself was excellent. But I can't understand why the dish was served on a piece of parchment paper on the plate. It made a shredded mess as you try to cut the chicken and waffle. The skillet was good, but lacked potatoes (it was mostly sauteed veggies). And the "biscuit" it comes with is actually a 1/4 piece of an actual biscuit. A bit misleading. The Pep+Pim was tasty, but the ham was way overcooked and hard to slice. Service was simply weird. The entire staff hangs out behind the counter and wait to either run food to tables, or clean tables at people leave. That's it. They never walk around to ask how you are doing or offer to get you anything or fill drink orders. They simply stand behind the counter watching the long line of customers queuing for the single person taking orders. So it's a solid 4 that could easily be a 5 if they paid more attention to details, and actually provided some service. read more

I'm in town on business and I was looking for a nice restaurant to take our clients for a nice dinner. I read the reviews and despite some of the bad reviews I decided to give it a try myself since the chef / owner was the winner of Top Chef Season 16. Well, I was disappointed. I had high hopes and was excited but that fizzled away quickly. I had the steak frites @$34 and it was too salty. The outside was over charred, so it gave it a bitter burnt taste. I also had the drunken mussels @$18 for appetizer and although flavor was good it was over steamed because it was dry and rubbery. Overall, I did not enjoy the food and was expecting more for the price and its reputation since chef was a Top Chef winner. What made the experience not so bad was the wait staff. Ate here for the first time last night and I wish I could give this more than 5 stars! Darby was incredible. Never had such friendly, relatable and prompt service. Very tidy, with a high end ish but welcoming atmosphere. It was my daughter's birthday and it really couldn't have been better. They were out of ceviche but its good to know they order fresh! We had reservations, showed up about 20 mins early, we were seated, the restaurant wasn't busy, we waited more than 10 mins and no one ever stopped to take our order. A side of fries was $5 and served in a toddler bowl. The $18 burger was ok but not extraordinary. The wings were blah, I've had better at almost any wing place. The chicken nachos were the best dish and very delicious We got snapper tacos and also Cuban pork tacos which were $16 a plate. And we're just 3 tacos with no sides. We were charged an extra $3 for the snapper and $3 for pork. I can understand being charged extra for snapper but that wasn't listed on the menu. But being charged for pork which is the cheapest meat available is not necessary. Anyways my wife and I were just disappointed. The restaurant lives off its name and chefs name. We did the Saturday brunch and were very pleased! We got there a little bit after opening time and it was quite busy. Despite having to wait in line, we did like that you ordered and paid before sitting down to eat. After doing so, we surprisingly recieved our food within 10 mins! The ambience of the restaurant is rustic and chić, very cute and perfect for date night. The quality of the food and portions were awesome. We had the KBC Chicken biscuit and Blue Ribbon biscuit. The chicken was excellent, great size and very crispy. The gouda grits that come with each biscuit sandwich were delicious and smooth. Also the prices of the brunch menu were really great. Since moving to the area, this is the first place I have been truly happy about eating at. Very grateful to have this place nearby! He said he was getting it ready right then and came back and set 2 other groups that had come in after us. Our reservations were for a party of 6 adults and 2 children. We left because we were never acknowledged at all after speaking to the front person two times. I am very disappointed with what transpired tonight. Very mixed on how ro rate this restaurant. Really liked Kelsey on Top Chef and wanted to love her place. First have to say the service and front of the house person Brett was fabulous. We ordered rhe Figgy Piggy Flat and it was really good. For the entres we had the duck and the amber jack fish. The duck was literally swimming in butter. I like butter but this was too much. The amberjack fish was really good but the sides were dry. We like well seasoned food but I think Tom C. Top Chef judge would have said this was over seasoned. It was the Christmas holiday and they had a really big party in the back so I'm thinking our sides might have not gotten the attention needed. I really wanted to be wowed. Was wowed by the service but not so much the food. We did get some cookies to go and they were fabulous. We will go back but not at the holidays and in the middle of the week. Just expected more finesse from a Top Chef winner. read more

I want to preface this by saying I really wanted to love this place. I came here on a Saturday afternoon with 2 other people. Didn't appear super busy, there was one person in front of us to order. We ordered 2 sandwiches and a salad- the total was $38 (which seemed high for 2 sandwiches, a salad, and just water to drink) but we took our number to our table and waited. And waited. And waited. 45+ minutes after ordering with zero updates or indication that our food was coming, I went up to the front to ask for an update. A woman rudely yelled from the kitchen that they were taking all the tickets in order and that it was coming- zero apology, zero estimate or how much longer we could anticipate waiting. Another 10 minutes later (so now over an hour) the cold sandwich and salad was dropped off at our table with zero mention of the final sandwich we were waiting on. We sat there and waited ANOTHER 10 minutes, watching a bunch of other orders coming out for different tables, before the last sandwich arrived. Review of the food: the Country Club salad was small for a $10+ entree, was more of a side salad size. The Butchers Bite sandwich/chips were good. The Bama grilled cheese was tasty, but out of the big pile of chips that came with it, only like 7 were large enough to actually eat. The rest of it was bottom of the bag tiny pieces. Overall, I was wildly underwhelmed by the whole experience and feel like it could've been greatly improved with just a little communication. I understand places get busy- let people know to expect an extended wait. Let people know the rest of their food is coming when you drop off a partial order. read more

Really, really disappointed. I have wanted to eat here since Kelsey won top chef. Had lunch here a few years ago and had always wanted to have supper. I checked out the menu online and was ready to order when we walked in the door. I was told that Entree I wanted they didnt have. So I went with the recommendation of the waiter. We ordered the duck flat bread. It was really good. Id never had duck before and it was delicious. It was a bit sweet. I get the sweet/salt combo, but the main flavor was the sweet from the fig jam. Id order it again and just tell them to light on it. My husband ordered the ribeye and a side of gouda grits. The sides were great, but his steak was not cooked to proper temperature and was a really, really fatty piece of meat. The meat wasnt seared. It was more like it was cooked in an oven. I ordered the amberjack with carrots and Risotto on the recommendation of the waiter. The fish was terrible! It was fishy tasting and dry. They asked if i wanted something else. I said id like my sides, but would take a filet. When they bring the filet, it has a stick of rosemary on it. I had told the waiter 3x i was allergic. He took it back to be refired. When they brought me my 3rd meal of the night, they acted like it was my fault. The sides were great. The carrots were fantastic. The Risotto was nothing special. Honestly my Risotto is better. But it was good. The steak was like my husband's, it had no sear to it, and was under cooked. Honestly, my husband ate most of it because it was cooked how he likes his steak. I didn't dare send it back. When the check came, they charged me $45 for an under cooked steak that had to be sent back the 1st time after the 1st meal was awful. No one came to ask if it was better or anything. We spent $125 plus tip on a meal that was just ok. Ive had better steaks at applebees for a lot less. Its really sad because KBC is such a great chef, or portrayed that way on tv. Things like this happen when they get famous and step back out of the kitchen. I definitely don't recommend and definitely wont be back. read more

Soooooo disappointing!!!! We went last night for family celebrating my niece's graduation dinner. We got there at 630pm for our7pm reservation. It was really crowed, which is awesome, we were seated at 7pmish, didn't get a server till around 715, ordered drinks, appetizers and a bottle of wine, and waited and waited got apps, saw everyone around us eating, we finally decided to leave at 940pm, no dinner, we were compensated for the apps, but we paid $179 for alcohol waiting on dinner. My daughter and I stopped by to eat here one evening. There was no sign or posting online stating that a reservation was needed. We waited along with another couple for over 15 minutes just to be acknowledged and was told that it would be at least at 2 hour wait without a reservation. Did not disappoint! We sat out on the patio and the atmosphere is so beautiful that I want to recreate it at our home. Our service was excellent. I could tell that the waitress was busy but she was an expert. She made every trip count (taking out drinks, dropping off checks, etc). The food was excellent. My husband ordered the Three Little Pigs and he gave me a bite before my food arrived. His sandwich was so yummy that I thought I'd have a case of 'order envy'. Not the case at all. I ordered the Mother Dear ::insert drooling face here:: The basil pesto sets off all of those wonderful veggies. You definitely do not miss that there is not a protein. Even the grilled cheese sandwiches we ordered for our boys were delicious! Some cocktails and dessert were also ordered. The Rosemary Gimlet and Kelsey's Margarita were tasty. The prices are maybe a little steep but it was a good kickstart to our vacation. The sugar cookie and macarons were also incredible. So with the limited chic, hipster diner locales in the area, and a now seemingly meaningless "Top Chef winner" title, perhaps KBC thinks they can get away with slow service and kitchen management, as well as mediocre food. While I appreciate the environment, it was a very cute restaurant, 20 minutes for a drink, an hour for appetizers, and then warned that entrees would also be slow, was a great disappointment. I had been looking forward to trying this place since I moved down here from the chic, hipster-bar's natural environment of the more populous west coast cities. They were busy, fine. But an hour for practically a flavorless shrimp appetizer, as well as dry, chewy and unbalanced crab claws? It makes it hard to believe the Top Chef judges aren't exaggerating out of their behinds for ratings. If Top Chef doesn't put contestants through running a dinner service like Hell's Kitchen, they really should. High prices are for high quality, and besides the atmosphere, and presentation, there wasn't anything of high enough quality to justify those prices. Perhaps with local competition so limited they have become complacent, or overly confident in their abilities. But it really isnt an excuse, for taking advantage of customers by trying to convince them that this is gourmet or even palatable just because the owner/chef/founder won a TV show cooking competition. If she isnt in the kitchen, she needs to get back in there to show what she can do. If she is, then Top Chef is nothing more than a meaningless title used to convince consumers her food is good. read more

Our waitress was lovely & her timing was great. The best part about this restaurant is the macaroons! I enjoyed every single one. I would say that the only item I didn't care for in this restaurant was their tuna appetizer. It was basically a can of tuna with no seasonings a side of pickled vegetables, with tortilla chips. We stopped here for lunch in the way down to the beach. Totally came upon this place by accident when a friend posted about their meal and I thought it looked good and saw it was owned by a winner of Top Chef so we were sold! We timed it so it was feeding time for our 5-month old and we didn't have any issues with that. He was well behaved and the wait staff didn't seem upset with a baby so that was nice. We went knowing there may be a wait on a Saturday but it was about 30 minutes which was just perfect to give him a bottle. Since we had the baby and were kind of on borrowed time with him I didn't get pics of our food! Hubby and I decided to order different sandwiches and give each the other half. It ended up being a perfect game plan for us. He got the Burnt Ends Melt and I got the Laura Wrap. The Wrap was absolutely delicious. Very light and flavorful. I opted for chips as the side and they were really really good. I assume they are house made and had a great taste and perfect crunch. The portion was big enough to share with hubby. The Melt was yummy as well but the downside was hubby didn't feel like he had enough burnt ends in his. He said it reminded him more of a barbecue sandwich but it was still really good. He opted for the potato salad and our waitress asked if we had had it before and we said it was our first time there. She said she only asked because they had just changed the potato salad to not have bacon and cheese in it anymore. He didn't mind that and still opted for it but then said he wonders if he would have liked it more with those extras. I told him cheese and bacon can make anything better so yes he probably would have lol. I got sweet tea and it was definitely too sweet but I was okay with it. Hubby would have loved to get an alcoholic drink as they looked great but he was driving. We did not save room for dessert but when I had looked up food pics before we went it looked like a lot of the yummy looking desserts were only available at dinner. If I had realized there was a dessert menu for lunch I would have tried to not fill up!! Would love to come here for dinner for sure!!! read more

I've been wanting to try KBC, since I saw the owner on Top Chef. I just didn't have an occasion to be in Dothan. Well that occasion came up and we stopped by for breakfast. The restaurant appears to be in a renovated building and has a lot of charm. You order at the counter and they bring you your food. The odd thing was that there were a lot of servers at the counter but only one took orders even though there was a long line. We shared 3 breakfast dishes: the Folsom Blues chicken and waffles, skillet hash, and pep+pim biscuit. The chicken was delicious, but the waffle was ordinary and soggy. The skillet hash consisted of patties, veggies, and brisket topped with a fried egg and served with a quarter of a biscuit. It tasted really good but could have used more potatoes (there was only a couple of pieces). The pim biscuit is pimento cheese, pepper jelly, and country ham on a biscuit. As with the other dishes it was tasty, but just missed the mark; the ham was quite dry. Overall, it was an enjoyable breakfast and I think my experience may have been colored with my expectations. read more

My boyfriend and I dined here for the second time for dinner. Both times have been a wonderful experience. We love the atmosphere and we recommend this place to our friends. The cocktails are a little too sweet but the food is on point. The staff is very friendly. Our waitress, Kacy, was great!
