For the past two years, we've had nasty flash floods that have left us collectively about $30,000 in debt, even with flood insurance. The house is built on a hill, and when a heavy rain hits us after a dry spell, bad things happen. When the last payout finally came in, we'd planned to earmark a big chunk for fixing the drainage once and for all. Enter Keep Austin Landscaped. Even though our house is small and they usually don't do such small jobs, they came up with a great plan to reroute the water from uphill and guide it around our house to prevent flooding. Initially they suggested an inexpensive galvanized wire and rock wall to keep the water from flowing into our house, but later decided that a better, solid concrete retaining wall would do the job better - - for just the same price. And then, of course, COVID happened. Nevertheless, the KAL team was still ready to work with us as long as we gave the workers their distance, which of course was only fair. I really appreciated them coming out and risking getting sick to do that work, especially when we were really scared that any time now we might flood again. Our uphill neighbors initially agreed to allow us to install a French drain on their property to allow water to drain into the alley behind our houses instead of into our house, but then reneged for reasons we still don't understand. We offered to adjust planning to take any specific concerns into account or seek mediation, but they insisted that we not do anything on their side of the hill. Of course it's difficult to route water away from a house down hill if you can't do anything before the water gets there! The nice folks at KAL tried several times to speak to my neighbors in both English and Spanish on our behalf, and in the end our neighbors allowed them to complete the plan by extending gravel drainage along the shared fence. We've just had the first heavy rain after a dry spell since they've been out here, and not a hint of flooding. We hired Keep Austin Landscaped to do a small job in our front yard. We bought a new house and were a bit oblivious what to do with our front flower bed. We hired Keep Austin Landscaped for a modest job (~$5000) to refresh the plants and beds all around our property. Shawn was incredibly responsive and attentive to our questions and requests, and offered suggestions when we were undecided about smaller details. He worked around our schedule and was happy to work independently when we weren't available to meet. We're very happy with the resulting work. Our yard is much cleaner and looks like it was designed with purpose, instead of letting nature run its course, including a new raised bed and several fruit trees. The real differentiator is Shawn's obvious drive to make sure we were satisfied with his work. On several occasions he went the extra mile to go back to the stone vendor to send us more pictures, or drive across town to another nursery to find the right plants, or offer to clean up some overgrown area of our yard that was outside the statement of work. He really showed he cared about us first and foremost. Most recently he checked in to see how the new landscaping has fared with the freezing weather and said he'd come back in the spring to address any problem areas. Really just above and beyond. I talked to Shawn briefly on the phone today. His first question was how much did I want to spend. His minimum is job $2,500, and he charges a bid fee of $100 dollars. I might have paid $5000 or $10,000 to get my back yard in shape but I am not in the habit of paying a bid fee. His voicemail answered with a different phone number. I can't imagine wanting anything more. I just moved into a house in South Austin and didn't know the landscape lighting system from the sprinkler system. Shawn helped me with my irrigation system in Barton Hills. It was an existing system and only covered part of my back yard. The rest of the yard wasn't covered by the system and I didn't have the budget to install the system at this time so he installed longer heads that rotated and they saved most of my yard from drought this summer. The 35-year-old sprinkler system in my home in Central Austin may be old, but we've maintained it well and it's still capable. Over the past two years, I've hired two other sprinkler repair firms who said they could "fix me right up." They charged me a lot of money, and the repairs didn't improve my system much at all. When I called Shawn for an estimate, his dad returned the call the next day to let me know that he operates the original company in Dallas and was covering for Shawn in the Austin office while he was away for a couple of weeks. Shawn Nik's professionalism and honesty are very questionable. He showed up for the estimation to repair my sprinkler system in the first day, but he committed himself to repair all problems quickly in that day. However, he has addressed only a couple of easy problems in that day. He gave up to complete repairs eventually, and promised to come back other day to finish up the rest of work.
