I had cataract surgery done by Dr. Tokuhara for both of my eyes. I could not have been happier with the result or the process, as was predicted by a number of friends who were also treated by him-- not to mention my primary care doctor. I take a medication that has " floppy irises" as a side effect. He was able to adapt his procedure to account for that, and it went very well. A number of people have commented on how well they were treated and respected, not only by the doctor, but by his colleagues in the practice. I want to echo that. I went in because I thought I was having an allergic reaction to doxycycline that involves increased pressure in the eyes. Which is very scary. I really felt they took great care of me and they tested the pressure in my eyes as well as did a full exam checking the nerve etc. so I felt much relieved and I also felt they were very competent and thorough and organized It was also cheap: $169 for a thorough exam, Time with the very pleasant doctor and the very helpful Ecaterina. I was experiencing a very worrying issue with one of my eyes and really wanted see someone before the Christmas holiday. I went to a local optometrist who pretty quickly referred me over. His office is modern, clean, welcoming and I was impressed with how well equipped it was with everything necessary for a multitude of situations and/or procedures. All of the staff from the front desk to the exam room where just extraordinarily pleasant and friendly. Dr. Tokuhara listened carefully to my concerns and performed a very comprehensive exam that really helped set my mind at ease that his findings were accurate and that nothing had been missed. I'm so relieved that it appears it was something that will self resolve with a bit of extra care. I'm very grateful for the time and talent of this physician and his staff - overall my experience was probably one of the best I've ever had at a physicians office. My only note for improvement might be on the pricing of the over the counter goods like eye drops, eye masks etc. While it was really convenient to pick up my Bruder Mask while I was there... I don't think it was worth paying $30 more than they retail for - that was a bit of a bummer since I bought 2. Could have saved $60 if I bought elsewhere. read more

The experience here at Desert Vision Center was so much better that my previous experience. It was like night and day. The only complaint I have with Tokuhara relates to his billings. His office violates US Medicare regulations by requiring up-front payments in cash before they even attempt to bill a patient's Medicare account. As an attorney since 1975, I can testify that billing practice violates both Federal and State of California laws and regulations. Final complaint: Medicare only reimburses about 30 percent of Tokuhara's enormous billings, stating in writing that they are "unreasonable and unreimbursable." read more

Dr. Tokuhara and his staff are amazing. He restored vision in my right eye following cataract surgery, which only took a few minutes. He and his staff were extremely competent and kind. They spent all the time needed to thoroughly explain my condition and to answer all my questions. There was never any rush to move on to the next patient. When the staff was ready to see me, they personally came out to the waiting area to greet me. I had seen several other ophthalmologists, and none of them were competent enough to successfully perform cataract surgery on my eyes because of a floppy iris condition. I went to this eye doctor for a second opinion on routine eye surgery for cataracts. I was very much impressed with the office and it seemed well setup and he has a very good reputation. I did get a good and through exam eye with needed information much more than LLU where I had a prior exam. The problem is that the bill for his services must be paid up front and his office sends the forms to YOUR insurance for YOUR reimbursement. Whatever the insurance will pay if any? I have no intension paying up front for cataract surgery not knowing what the insurance will cover. So I won't be back but anyone should be aware of this situation with this office. read more

The highest tech opthamologist I have ever visited. I have been struggling with dry eye disease and preglaucoma my whole adult life. He has been able to help me with surgery and to evaluate the progression of my disease as no other doctor. He is also able to prescribe glasses by just looking at your eye through a machine that refracts light. None of this "what looks better, number 1 or number 2?" stuff. It takes the guess work out. You force your eye to focus on something and the machine generates your exact prescription. It's amazing. Particularly if you suffer from Sjogren's or dry eye disease, Dr. Takamura is an amazing resource. I had a mini surgery (it was two minutes) to plug my tear ducts and keep more moisture in my eye. Combined with a new home regimen I'm really seeing progress. Finally, I haven't used them, but the office has an amazing selection of high end frames and everyone there has amazing, unusual glasses. Dr. Takamura himself is warm and friendly. He let me know he understood my condition and there were many options to ease my suffering. I was so comforted by his presence; it made it a lot easier to hold my eyes open. He's a warm, confident and skilled physician. read more

I had a hard time giving this business a one star. I've been to many doctors in the valley ( California ) but never have had an experience like this in California, Minnesota, Arizona or even in Florida. But this doctor in Rancho Mirage CA has a very unique way of conducting his business. I was asked to pay upfront for all costs regarding dilating and receiving yag laser with both my eyes. Now, the price was determined by " what he found " So, of course they ( receptionists ) are required to quote an approximate amount. They're not sure of the total cost of the procedure, so who knows what it'll really cost?? They wanted to also charge my Medicare and Blue Cross for whatever the cost was. How then, if they charged both insurance company's, would I get my money back? I'd have to call both company's to get my money back! Now everyone knows that Medicare pays a certain amount of your visit /procedure. But, paying up front before anything is done ? Never heard of it. I rescheduled with another doctor. My referral to Kevin G Tokuhara said she knew nothing about how his business was run. She will now send her clients elsewhere . Never posted a Yelp review before. But I thought this was important enough to recognize that it might be a scam? What do you think? read more

From the time we walked into the office we were treated with upmost respect. He refused to see me after 2 years of complications from uveitis and dry eye. Sent me to UCLA , 8 hours round trip. I need frequent eye checks , but he refused to see me. Office said he was upset that someone else did my cataract surgery and wouldnt see me anymore. He said he was going to refer me to a rheumatologist, he never did. I called his office multiple times. His treatment of me was unprofessional, mean and harmful. It's all about his ego and the Benjamin's. Next I will be making a complaint to the AMA. read more

I cannot say enough good things about my experience with Dr. Tokuhara. The entire staff were incredibly kind and professional, and they all went out of their way to put my mind at ease as I was very nervous to have the double cataract surgery. I had both of my eyes corrected on the same day which also saved me money, but by that night I could see properly for the first time in years. I was driving without glasses two days later. I have always considered Dr. Tokuhara a very fine gentleman/Opthomologist. 5 STARS ! Sorry to say that is no longer the case. Since they relocated into their new offices in Rancho Mirage, I have been advised he is no longer treating patients if they are not considering Cataract Surgery. Out the window goes the belief that a Doctor should do no harm. I have become a permanent resident of the area now and was planning on the Dr. taking care of all of my vision needs. I am a patient with Glaucoma who needs supervision and monitoring. So when I phoned the office to make an appt. I was told the Dr. advised me to see a regular Optomotrist or Opthomologist since he is concentrating on Cataracts only. However, that is NOT how his advertising displays his practice. I guess the $$ for surgery is too hard to resist, and to hell with the patients that need consistent follow-up for non-surgical issues. btw, He is aware of all of the procedures I have had and will possibly need in the future. We just recently moved to La Quinta from Orange County. My husband had a fall and injured his eye. He has glaucoma so we really wanted his pressure checked and it looked like he had a sub conjunctival hemorrhage. Our ophthalmologist in OC suggested we call someone local to check it out. We are so grateful for Dr. Tokuhara and his attentive staff. Back in December 2020 my husband suddenly lost vision in his left eye due to a vitreous hemorrhage. It was very a frightening and stressful experience to think my husband could go blind. We called Dr. Tokuhara's office and were immediately given an appointment for that same day. Dr. Tokuhara thoroughly explained our option plans and gave his recommendations. The most aggressive option would have been high risk invasive surgery which we were definitely not financially prepared for. The other option would require laser treatments and not be as expensive but would be a more gradual recuperation process. We chose the more affordable option with less risk. Fast forward a few months and here we are feeling grateful. With Dr. Tokuhara's caring guidance and thorough monitoring my husband's vision is nearly 20/20. Let me tell you about Dr. Keith Tokuhara, my husband and I went to Dr. Tokuhara, because we were unhappy with the last two doctors we went to...we made our appointments on the same say. They took me in and did about 1hr. and 1/2 of testing...then they dilated my eyes. I went into see the doctor, he did his eye exam on my eyes and told me after the last doctor wanted to remove my cataracts ASAP, I really felt that it wasn't necessary, I have always heard your eyes will tell you when it is time...and the doc that wanted to do my surgery was in to much of a hurry, after that doc was done wth me and my exam he or she was in to much of a hurry to get out of my exam room and ran out...only to find out through the grape vine that happen to one of my husbands clients as well, that gentleman said he was going to sue that doc., so I wasn't the only one that happened to... When I told Dr. Tokuhara that I kept getting styes in my eyes, he knew exactly what was going on, rosacea, and it all made sense...the other doctor said to put warm soakes on it and I would be fine. So Dr. K. Tokuhara, gave me steriod drops, I had severe dry eyes, so he gave me over- the- counter Sustain Complete eye drops, I had to clean my eye lids twice a day for a long while, and oh my goodness my beautiful blue eyes came back...Need I say more... read more
