Just like a previous review stated, don't let the small, kind of worn-looking front exterior fool you. This place was wonderful! My husband and I were looking for a place to eat that was near the Horseshoe Casino. We found Keith's on Yelp and decided to give it a try. I'm so happy we did. You enter the front door to a small bar on one side and where the cooks are preparing the food on the other. It's not really a kitchen. We were amazed at how well the food was prepared in such a small space. My husband ordered the walleye and i had the chicken saltimbocca. Both meals were accompanied by potatoes and green beans. My husband really enjoyed his fish and my chicken was very good. The service was great as well. We don't live near Keith's but if we're ever in Whiting we will definitely eat here again. Yum veal saltimbocca! I have also had a delicious fish dish a awhile back as well. This is a diamond in the rough of Whiting Indiana. The waitresses are seasoned, however some lack the ability to describe the dishes besides saying it is delicious. They were right but it does help me pick between a couple items. It's a shame this great restaurant is only open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays. I have always been impressed with my meal at Keiths. This is by far the best restaurant in Whiting and possibly Northwest Indiana. There are always great specials - entrees and appetizers. I am not a big fan of ribs, but when I have a taste for it, Keiths has the best. Better than Memphis ribs. Service is top notch. They have a full bar and a nice wine selection. Their dinners may be a bit on the pricey side, around $80 to $100 for a couple, that's drinks, appetizer, and meals. They tend to use a lot of garlic, which in my opinion enhances the flavor of the food they serve. I recommend you make reservations and keep in mind that dinner is only available on Friday and Saturday evenings. Ask for a window seat when making a reservation. They have this little table for two in the back, which is up against the wall and in the line of traffic. They sat us their once which was very uncomfortable, and attempted to sit us there again the 2nd time we went there for dinner. We chose to eat at the bar instead. After photos here on Yelp revealed the "Men's Entrance" and "Women's Entrance" signs on its doors, we cancelled and went elsewhere. I live in California (Santa Cruz area) and was in the Chicago area tending to family business and ended up at Keith's on 6/19/10. My brother lives down the street in Whiting and has raved about Keith's for several years. He was right and I was blown away!!! I'm not exaggerating when I say the best calamari I have ever had is the calamari at Keith's. I live on the coast in California and I found GREAT calamari in Indiana?! Go figure...but it was truly outstanding. The Diablo Shrimp (I think that was the name) appetizer and Pasta Cabonara entree that followed were also outstanding. Maybe that doesn't really say it. The food was TERRIFIC. The service was excellent and the entire experience was the highlight of my weekend in the Chicago area. I had a chance to speak to owner Scott Keith and found out the restaurant is only open for dinners Friday and Saturday. My condolences to locals looking for a great dining experience Sunday through Thursday. Ok so I lived in whiting for about 10 yrs. I've never been here until today. I work at BP and my manager has taken customers here before. And recommended it. They are only open for lunch and dinner on the weekends. We went on a Friday night got lucky and got seated right away. Recommend u call in for a reservation. We got a glass of wine and the glasses were huge lol which sometimes at some places they are small. We had the bruschetta as a appetizer. And the ribeye for our entree and let me tell u!!! The BF is a big steak man and he said that it was the best ribeye he has ever had! Big points! I almost ate the whole thing but couldn't finish it off BUT I left not having that I ate too much I can't breathe feeling u know which I feel tells you u had a great piece of meat. Our bill was about $120 which I was like dayum! But did ask the BF if it was worth it and he said yes. It is small and it was a lil warm in there but I was drinking but if u want a great piece of steak and in the area I highly recommend! read more

We went with a party of 7 for a birthday dinner on a Saturday night. It was my first time there. I'd never even heard of it before. It is, indeed, cramped - especially the entry which leads past the restrooms before squeezing between the lilliputian kitchen and the bar. Then up a couple stairs to several smallish dining areas. Every seat was filled at 7:30 p.m. The noise level was moderate. We were at the very back. Our waitress was an older, blonde woman who we all thought we remembered from Phil Smidt's. (She hadn't worked there, but she was of that type: efficient, professional, friendly, someone who'd done this her whole life and had it down.) We had appetizers to share: mussels in wine sauce and saganaki. Both light and delicious. The salads - mixed greens with various dressings and Caesar - were adequate but nothing special. Some of us had veal, others pasta - all accompanied by appreciative comments. My seafood pasta was very good. (When has a bowl of crab claws, shrimp, and mussels in a tangy red sauce ever been bad?) I found room for a bit of key lime pie. FWIW, deciding on the seafood pasta wasn't easy considering the interesting menu choices. Looks like I have a reason to return. With two bottles of house Zin and beers and after dinner coffees and a glass of port it came out to less than $45 per person (including tip). While that amount may raise eyebrows in Whiting, it was solid value at a fair price. read more

Keith's is a must when I have friends visiting. There is always a fabulous aroma as you open the door, and a friendly atmosphere greets you as you walk past the great wooden bar and eclectic decor. The food is consistantly good, whether it's the regular favourites of Ribs that just fall off the bone, or the awsome Roman Cod or any of the new dishes that creep onto the menu periodically. Certainly the best thing for a few miles around, but not that good considering the prices. Ate lunch here several times when I was working at the nearby refinery and both meals were not too bad. Not great considering the prices; but not that bad. Certainly expected much more considering the build up the restaurant got and considering what I dropped both times to eat there. Frankly, there isn't much in Whiting or North Hammond to eat for lunch and definitely nothing which would serve a high quality dinner ( the possible exception being the steakhouse in the nearby casino) so it is the best in the area. Substandard dining accommodations. Had reservations and an unfortunate situation, being early in the evening, to be sitting next to two tables cross talking with one other and one lady with an annoying laugh. On top of that, there was a pounding on the wall that was just not pleasant (from I presume the "prep kitchen"). I proceeded to ask to be moved up front. The hostess insisted she could not help us with our plight. There was ZERO effort made to attempt to accommodate us. Just a lot of shrugs and "sorrys". On the way out, I had words with Keith and explained this was not a good situation. He seemed disinterested and I was bothering him with his conversation with patrons at the bar. I'll trust what everyone says about the food, but never had the chance to try the food. Customer service is lacking, and the place is in need of repair. This is not the "charm" I was expecting that people said the place had. I took my $120 for the night elsewhere. You should too! As usual, I think Regionites comes to expect less and substandard ideas of "ambiance" and service. read more

Keith's is definitely a hidden gem. Every item I've ever gotten is delicious (though some is crazy-full of garlic, so you may want to avoid the seafood pasta if you have a hot date afterwards). There aren't a lot of good lunch spots in SE Chicago and NW Indiana, so this spot definitely stands out. Whiting, Indiana is definitely not the hub of great food but word on the street is times are changing. A brewpub just opened and upscale Mexican restaurant is rumored to be next. Keith's is the old school standard though. I nearly expected a relish tray when I sat down, it has that kind of vibe. We started with the shrimp cocktail which was the best I had ever had! The homemade cocktail sauce was clear your sinuses good. The house salad was great, romaine lettuce, tomato and red onion in balsamic vinaigrette. The other 3 at the table settled on pastas which I tried and were all phenomenal especially the pasta puttanesca. I went with the filet which was monstrous sized as far as filets are concerned and was cooked to perfection, which for me typically means undercooked to perfection since I prefer rare, but they got it right on the money. Have always wanted to go to Keiths but never found the time.... Went tonite and was not disappointed.... For appetizer had the smoked salmon... Wonderful! Came with 2 kinds of caviar and horseradish sauce.... Very light and flavorful! For the entree had pork chops... 2 large bone in loin chops that were juicy and flavorful and cooked perfectly that were accompanied by some mashed and roasted vegetables.... Friend had the seafood pasta dish.... He said it was very good... He usually brings a doggy bag home but not this time.... I came home with the other chop I couldn't finish! Very cozy and inviting atmosphere.... Nice to know there's a fine dining experience right here in the area....Our server Mary was warm, friendly and extremely accomodating!! Does anyone remember Dick Christian and "The Pub" in Michigan City? Well Dick retired long ago. I have been looking for a fine restaurant in Northwest Indiana for over 13 years..... and have found it in Keith's at Whiting, in a place you would drive by and never notice. Start looking. Just the best little place in the region. I have had YFTuna, Italian Marsala Chicken, Veal, Veggie Spaghetti and other meals all of which were wonderful and the best. I will say that $16 to $25 is great and moderately priced for the high quality food. The food and service remind me of of The Pub and I am headed there tonight w/friend. The calamari appetizer is to die & served with the most incredible red sauce. The rack of lamb is incredible, the veal excellent, the scallops phenom; the martinis are not watered down. LOVE Keith's. I wish they were open more days but I will take the quality over the quantity any day. My husband always get s steak. They are huge and compared to what you would pay downtown for a smaller steak with no sides you can't beat it. I alternate between the ribs and the many fish specialties although the scallops are my go to when I can't decide. My complaint on the ribs is that you can't pick them up because the meat falls off the bone. They are amazing. Their shrimp cocktail is also fantastic and the few times I got dessert it was very very good. I can agree with the one review that talked about a rude waitress that is very rushy and abrupt. We try to avoid having her. We live close by so we go pretty often and we always ask to be seated somewhere else. The rest of the wait staff are great. You really do need to make a reservation although we have gotten in on a walk in a few times. Great place to celebrate something special or treat yourself. Food is as good or better than downtown Chicago and you don't have to deal with the parking and the prices. read more
