We have been coming to this restaurant for decades and I am sad to say that under this new ownership the standards and quality that we expect have slipped. The place is dirty inside (bathroom unkept, food on floor near trash cans, tables dirty, etc...), dirty outside (trash cans overflowing into the lawn and parking lot), and fish tank by the ordering station is blacked out and absolutely filthy. Our food was just okay but the menu has changed but not for the better sadly. Service was prompt but there were folks in the kitchen standing around on their phones and not focused on their work. 1-2-3-4-5. TL;DR: I wanted to enjoy Kelly's. Really. I didn't. I signed up for the loyalty program. Attempt 1:I tried to place an order online and use a Kelly's gift card that I received, as well - a gift. Sorry, gift cards not accepted online. Attempt 2:I logged in and tried to use the app. Upon checkout, gift cards not accepted. Attempt 3:I went to the restaurant and went to a kiosk (order here!). I logged in and entered my first item (roast beef). The second item was not programmed into the kiosk. Attempt 4:I went to a cashier and told them what I wanted to order. They don't accept the voucher from the loyalty program if paid with a gift card. Attempt 5:The cashier got a manager who informed me it required a credit card to register the loyalty program and then I could use the gift card. Order went through. Then I waited. And waited. 18 minutes for a roast beef sandwich and fried pickles. That's all. I had to change my order from eat-in to take-out. I eventually was given a bag with food. The pickles were there and they were ok. The roast beef was there and it was decent. But neither was properly prepared and both missed ingredients that were on the receipt. Whoops. Order failure. Oh, due to the extensive time to place the order and get the food, I was not able to finish things before my next meeting. So it was mostly a waste. How unfortunate. read more

Ambiance: We ordered through the drive thru window since we were on our way out of the city from the airport. Service: The people at the drive thru were friendly. Food: I was not expecting much, but the food did not look appetizing at all! The roast beef looked sad and gray, and the side of onion rings looked tattered rather than battered. Ugh! Kelly's was a standard for roast beef and seafood. Now that it was bought out by a private equity firm, everything has gone downhill. New menu changes are probably made to address food inflation (sliders, really?). The fried haddock looks like something I could have bought in the Market Basket freezer section. Ordered our from Kelly's and their chicken fingers are so different and not like they used to be which is a huge disappointment. Additionally, they changed their fries and I believe changed the way they batter the fish. The fish sandwich was good, but it tasted like a run of the mill roast beef place fish sandwich. The drive through was a 20+ minute wait for a grilled cheese sandwich and fries. This was 9pm on a Saturday night. What I received was a cold, slapped together, raw sandwich. Pictures are listed below. Certainly not worth the nearly $10.00 I paid. These pictures are 15 minutes after I received it. Looks like 2 or 3 pieces of cheese put in the middle of the bread before cooking. The outside didn't have butter spread evenly on the outside. It wasn't cooked enough to eat. I opened up the sandwich to check it out. Took pictures. Shameful! You should be ashamed of yourselves. If you don't have the staff to run the drive through then close it down. Was bummed at the whole experience of it all. Been going there for years and sad to say the service has been going downhill gradually. I get that some kids need the job for the summer to have and all, but the attention span of them is like a goldfish. I went with my mother and aunt for dinner, and we ordered the fish platter...$22 for 2 kids size fish patties handful of fries and onion rings - not worth the $22 bucks, sorry not sorry. Then asked for a steak and onion and was told they don't serve it there; they do the steak and cheese and can replace the cheese with onion... (let that sink in.) THEN, was asked if I wanted the bread????? What???? I literally stared at the girl and said, "is there any other way it comes?" the sandwich was literally destroyed, it was "cut" with either their hands or a really, really dull knife, but it was not edible, very greasy, no onion (shocker) so ended up getting my mom a small roast beef after standing in line for a good 5 minutes as the crew chatted away, seeing there was a line, but the conversation must of been one heck of a story, guess they noticed it was more than 3 people in line so the conversation had to end (so sad). The ambiance was low, with the prices getting higher, seems people are really thinking of where to go to eat. I went to kelly's roast beef on broadway in saugus and honestly it was kinda frustrating. we waited about an hour for our food which is way longer than it should be. we went up 3 times to ask about it, first they said 15 minutes, then 5 minutes, but still nothing came out. the third time we went up we literally saw our food just sitting on the hot counter and had to point it out. it seemed like they forgot about our order. the manager finally came over and said they wouldn't give us the food since it had been sitting there for a while, which i respect, and they remade it pretty fast. the food was fine once we got it but the whole wait and no communication just made the experience annoying. definitely something they need to fix. read more

No more the roast beef was not rare & the onion rings were not thin sliced & the batter was different than how I remember them. Very unhappy. I went to Kelly's in Saugus today and was appalled! I started going to Kelly's on Revere Beach in the 1960s with my parents and always loved their food over the years ... until today. I arrived at about 11:00 am and quickly noticed the outdoor trash cans overflowing with trash. As I approached the side entrance, the door windows were covered with finger prints on the inside and outside ... I should have left then. As I walked inside, I noticed the place was dirty with only a few customers. I ordered an RB sandwich and water bottle and waited 15 minutes for it to be delivered. The sandwich was marginal at best and i was very disappointed. I went to the men's room to cleanup and as soon as I walked inside the strong smell of urine was disgusting. The new owners of Kelly's do not seem to care about carrying on the tradition of what once was a great place to eat! Shameful! read more

Have to say exactly like another person did in a previous review. I would like to remember Kelly's as it was. Growing up in Everett, going to Kelly's on Revere beach was a regular thing. Always loved the food. The roast beef sandwich had a burnt bun, and the roast beef was very fatty. The onion rings were horrible and tasted burnt. Not the quality I was used to at Kelly's. Lastly, the area behind the counter didn't look very clean. I don't like to give reviews like this, but I hope this Saugus Kelly's location can get back to the standard that was Kelly's. read more

Kelly's Roast Beef has been a staple of Route 1 in Saugus for many years. It is yet another spot that reminds me of childhood and is definitely unique- you will remember it. The inside sports red booth seats and has a large seating area. You will find two fish tanks in the dining area which always stood out to me and made me remember this face since I was young. Well...the fish and the ugly clown face next to the front counter that is also a staple of this location- and I mean ugly in the best way just to clarify. Ordering was quick and they give you a number, delivering food when it is ready. We had a few hiccups post-ordering however. Instead of delivering all of the food at once, the chicken plate I ordered took a while, but one of the staff was happy to grab a quick complimentary side order for me while I waited. A few sauces were forgotten, but when I went to ask they had them ready and recognized they had not gotten them to us yet. Despite the few hiccups, they recognized them and remedied them immediately and I think that sort of attentiveness is oft forgotten or thrown to the wayside nowadays. The staff are all quite kind. The food was great. There were three of use and we ordered two chicken plates ($9 each at the time of writing this which is amazing), mozzarella sticks, and a roast beef sandwich. True to their claim to being some of the best in roast beef, Kelly's did not disappoint in that department. It is a local chain and I am always happy to come back and spend my money here whenever I get the chance. I sent this message on 2/5/26, 2/10/26 and again on 2/14/26 and have not received a reply. They can't be bothered to reply to a customer complaint of a horrible food order. Hi, I ordered a takeout side of clams at the Saugus location at 11:59 today (2/5/26). Ticket 0064 Bin D3, Robert G SvrCk 23. They were the worst I have ever had. They were very over cooked, looking more like clam strips. The very small belly's were so dried out, they were unrecognizable from the rest. I had to spit out the neck of each clam as it was like rubber. The order came out in about 3 minutes which made me think the were left over and reheated. I am very disappointed. I trashed them after eating a few. I would think you don't want such a poor product to be served. Just wanted to know and make it right. read more

Update! I'm happy to say that things have improved. We decided to give it another chance and have tried the roast beef. It's still a great sandwich. Some of the niceties are back, but I can't say it's the same. The employees still seem unhappy, and the quality of the service has suffered. Chips are back but still no pickle... Sorry. They have some new menu offerings, but I haven't tried. The roast beef is still on point and I'm happy for the original owners that at least is unchanged. I always enjoyed coming here as a kid and on my visit back to MA today to see family we were really disappointed in the food and service. Very sour staff- cold roast beef- and it was kind of dirty. The roast beef itself was tasty- but cold. I remember their sandwiches being served hot. The airport location does a better job. read more

Ever looking for a large menu with quality food combined with a fast-casual sitdown dining experience? Kelly's is your spot. There's always plenty of seating, and the place is known for 2 things 1) having a huge fish tank (providing entertainment and mainly curiosity as to why it feels like I'm at the aquarium while waiting for my food) and 2) their random horse statues that look like they came from a merry-go-round at the Marshfield Fair 50+ years ago. So random but I love it. You know you're at Kelly's when you see the tanks and the horses. They have delicious onion rings, chicken tenders, and fries. I travel 45 minutes for their roast beef with cheese and sauce and it's worth every minute of it. I wish they would slap on a little more sauce for my roast beef but it's delicious nonetheless. They've got a lengthy seafood menu too, although I personally haven't ordered any seafood from here so I can't speak on it. I can't wait for the new Kelly's to open in Dedham! I can't even go here anymore. There's nobody in the drive-through line, I go around the corner after having a water taken by somebody didn't quite know what he was doing and there are three cars parked. 15 minutes later one moves forward. I come here at 9:45 would it closes at 10:00 and I'm like hello.. hello.. The drive-thru doesn't even answer. I had to walk in there people just wandering around with no purpose and I ordered something and it took another 15 minutes. I mean it's got to be just a matter of weeks before you see 'For Lease' outside of the location if not all locations. It is absolutely terrible and I just can't believe whoever bought the place was able to destroy it in such a short time. Maybe get a couple cameras in here and watch the employees and see if they're doing anything It's got to be something.. I mean I really seriously can't even go here anymore It's just I don't have a half an hour at the end of the day to sit and be frustrated. I've been going to Kelly's for over 50 years, but, after today I won't go back. I ordered a small roast beef meal. The beef tasted like pastrami. I'm choosing to believe they used the same slicer for both. It was horrible. The onion rings had been fried so long you could use them to knock on a door. They pour their sodas from one fountain spout so regardless of what you order your drink is mixed with previous order. The quality was awful and now it's a chain so prices up and quality down. So sad. What could be improved? Give people the quality they deserve and expect based on the original Kelly's reputation. read more

I saw the chowder was on a top ten list and I won't embarrass the hopeless fool who thought that, but it's just some potatoes and clams in a cup of milk with an off taste. You know what's worse? The fried shrimp are. They are so bad. The outside is crispy but the batter isn't cooked all the way through. So you bite in and get this mushy layer between the crust and the shrimp. It almost made me sick. Had maybe two and a half of those before I bowed out and threw the rest away. People were nice enough but the food is so bad I'm never going back. Two words: fish sandwich. It was delicious. I think they have revamped this item. No fries but you get an incredible piece of haddock fillet, big, flaky. It was perfect. Don't miss the fries, it's just less food for the day and not extra exercise. Ha! We ordered a pint of chowder and split that, plenty for two and lots of clams. This location is their lead restaurant not far from corporate. Anyone remember the Red Coach Grill restaurant? Dating myself, but this Kelly's location was where it was at when I was a kid. The Saugus location night crew is beyond terrible. The food was ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. Ordered 3 roast beef sandwiches and a chicken parm. The chicken parm was really good. However the roast beef sandwiches were not very good the onion rolls were dried out and burned. Two of our sandwiches came with fry onion ring combo they were cold which made no sense cause the place was very busy. And the staff was unfriendly and unapproachable. When they brought out our food one meal was missing a side we mentioned to the employee bringing your table he just plopped the tray down and walked off. So we went to counter to get it and no one would acknowledge we were there. Eventually we got it. The place is huge and had plenty of seating for as busy as it was however a lot of tables just had abandoned trays with food on them that were not cleaned up. We ordered a lobster roll and clam plate. Lobster was salty and washed out, basically they washed the lobster scraps and pounded on the salt. Not to mention is was stringy. We went because we remember how good Kelly's was (Revere). We ordered shrimp with coleslaw, which cost $15. My husband had a 2-combo platter with clam and scallop, which was about $34, as shown in the picture below. We were so disappointed. The description for my shrimp was extra large. Those shrimp were medium Size if you buy them at the grocery stores. The shrimp was juicy, just that's not extra large. The clam was good, but the scallop had a burnt aftertaste. My husband went and complained that they replaced our scallops (4), which were pretty good -If the price is decent we dont even bother to complain we just simple never be back. But since its $$$ we want our money worthed- They said everything was cooked by a timer. Our cashier seemed pretty new; he appeared very nervous, and the one who brought us the replacement scallops was just straight-faced, with no apology for the mishap. The place is very clean, has lots of windows, but a challenging location. Never again come here, it's overpriced and has terrible service. read more
