Definitely a local bar that has some mileage on it but did the job for that moment. It was actually entertaining to people watch and see a different side of town and their locals. It's definitely not the cleanest place and the bar areas seems like the place to be but the outside looked spacious and decent to hang, especially with nice weather. It appeared to be closed in and designated smoking areas during colder times. They also had a spot with a local band to play. I would say out of the other local chain restaurants, Kelly's have more variety and good burgers, wraps and such. Love the hand cut fries! It has been over two years since eating here. Please disregard my previous review because this was the best food we have had in a LONG time. Wow. That Rowdy Rueben Burger was OMG outstanding!!!! Thank you Kelly's for the amazing food and service. They do need help because they are understaffed but it was still excellent service for only two servers in the whole restaurant from what we saw. We decided to hit this place up after a day of the worst hangover. Something about greasy burgers just sat right with us. I'll start by saying I've gone here on the occasional whim for years, even though I have no idea why. It's not great. Wait time for seating wasn't bad. There looked to be only three people working, so it's to be expected. Server the first time got over to us pretty quickly. Drinks, apps, and burgers ordered. The whole shebang. Food was okay this time. The best thing we had were the potato skins, but it's hard to mess those up. The fries weren't good, maybe cooked in old grease. The burgers were okay. Subpar for their usual fair. The service, however, declined as soon as the food came out. We were "checked on" once. We we asked for a refill on drinks it took about 20 minutes or so for them to come. Let me add, they were not busy. Two other tables in the whole place, a few regulars playing pool. We asked for the refills, waited, the waitress went to the table beside us twice, once with drink refills and once to check in on them, then we waited some more before our drinks came. This place was wonderful. We were able to bring our dog with us! They even brought him a bowl of water and a "doggie bowl" with chicken so he could eat with us! The patio area was covered and nice- we went for lunch and were the only ones outside. Food was amazing! I don't typically write reviews but I did not appreciate the treatment at Kelly's yesterday and it made me wonder what the cause was and I hope its not what I think. My husband and I come in for drinks ever so often and enjoy it. The bartender lady with the bob haircut usually serves us. She's always busy but is still professional. yesterday, there was a guy behind the bar with a long beard and I dont know if he was having a bad day or didnt care for ppl like us. Either way, I felt uncomfortable. He made us wait about 10 minutes before he came up, not even in front of us with eye contact, but to the side and said "what you drinking?". No hello, no menus, no eye contact. I gave my order and he just pointed my husband for his. We went to make the drinks and we were left looking at eachother like Nope, we gotta go and we did. It's bar food. It's the only place open late at night that isn't called McDonald's. Kelly's is a nice place located at the mall, so you know there's plenty of parking spots. It's one of those local places like "Cheers" where everyone knows your name. There's a couple of pool tables and music could be heard all over the place. I didn't see a jukebox but this place didn't really need one since everyone was holding a conversation. And it's a bar so there's a couple of TVs. Madison was my server and she was a bundle of energy. Smiling, cleaning, serving, and making sure everyone was happy. She even found time to talk to little old me. I got a classic bacon burger with cheese and a bowl of hot soup. Madison chose for me crab soup and pepper jack cheese for the burger along with tater tots. Soup was ok. At first I really believed it was cream of mushroom with old bay spice. I through the dark spots were mushrooms but they're actually chopped celery. I did taste the crab. It wasn't in big chunks but in string form. Tater tots hot and crunchy. Perfect with mustard, ketchup, mayo, and pepper. And the burger was cooked perfectly. Nice hand formed med rare meat and the bacon was thick and had that great salty taste. Overall four stars. Don't expect fancy food at a joint like this. Kelly's has never had great food to me but the happy hour is pretty good, but that's pretty much where the buck has stopped. But I realize why I stopped going all of those years, they're not good at cooking actual food that isn't an appetizer. For instance, I am pescaterian, I ordered three orders with tuna in it (tuna bites, tuna wrap, and a tuna philly steak) I only order tuna medium cooked, and the cook manages to cook all of it well. We drove up from Florida, checking in to our hotel around 9:30PM, needing some grub and cocktails to unwind. A yelp search of nearby prospects resulted in Kelly's, and it fit the bill with aplomb. We got half a dozen well drinks, a french dip, burger and fries and it was just what we needed. Burger was a little well done, but this is a bar, not a Michelin-rated epicurean retreat. The only plus side was the bartender was nice. We left the concert at the amphitheater and saw they were open until 12. We walked in around 11. We asked the guy sweeping if the kitchen was opened he said "yup but fried food only" perfect. We sat at the bar and immediately the cook comes out and says the kitchen is closed. The guy who told us otherwise was like "my bad I didn't look at the clock". We found out that guy was the General Manager. As the General Manager he should be ABC certified and know that if you're serving alcohol for another hour LEGALLY they have to have some food options until 30minutes to close. Honestly, not a bad place for take out. They knew their take out options online didn't have the "sides" set up, so they gave me a ring. I know a lot of people hate on chain restaurants, but I was happily pleased with what I ordered. Not a 5 just bcz their home fries suckkkkk, we all know that! My husband and I decided to give it a second chance. We came here a few months ago and service and food weren't great but not horrible. Tonight, I probably should've walked out. The "waitress" took our order and yawned right in our faces without an excuse me. Placed our order and she messed up our drinks, no napkins or silverware till AFTER our food came out. I should've gone with first feeling (plus dirty windows), we really wanted pizza but settled because of time. We were seated promptly but it took a bit before the waitress came for drink order. Ambiance was lacking for sure. Anyway the menu had a large selection (that can be a negative). I was dying for French onion soup, so I ordered that then my sister ordered the chicken quesadilla and added 10 Buffalo chicken wings, quite a mishmash. Anyway the soup arrived it was pure white cheese, not browned on top. When I dug in it was very plain, a lot of bread and I noticed little bubbles around the soup, it wasn't hot at all and had absolutely no taste, not sure what kind of cheese it was, two spoonfuls and I was done....terrible. The wings were pretty good. The quesadilla was ok, the chicken was junky, with almost raw random green peppers and a couple onions, I didn't detect any cheese. Needless to say it wasn't very good and the waitress saw that I didn't hardly touch the $6.50 soup and didn't ask if anything was wrong with it!! We will not be back and won't recommend it. This place is definitely a local Hangout. They let us smoke cigars out on the patio they have a DJ that comes to play on most nights. They have pool tables in addition to corn hole. He service is solid depending on who's working. They have without a doubt the best chicken quesadillas in the 757... chicken onions green peppers jalapenos and cheese and they are very generous with the chicken. I also enjoyed the Cobb salad. There aren't many watering hole options in Chesapeake, so one must "get in" where one "fits in". The other day it was to be at Kelly's Tavern, where I would try to get in and then fit in. I ordered the Fried Egg Burger - a burger topped with American cheese and an over easy egg. It comes with a free side of your choice. I went with the fries and asked the fries to be cooked well and the burger medium. Unfortunately, it came reversed. I sent the fries back but ate the burger. The burger was still good even though it was overcooked because of the runny egg. When the fries came back they were nice and crisp. I also ordered a side of onion rings and asked that they be well done as well. The onion rings were great and so was the sauce that came with it. I sat at the bar so service was top-notch. My son was a big fan of the kid's cheeseburger, which is saying something since he's something of a burger fanatic. The fries were just average. I do appreciate a place that has malt vinegar, though. Unfortunately, the side salad was chock full of brown lettuce. Definitely a disappointment. We felt bad for the staff. Only one server and the bartender for the lunch rush on a holiday. I'm a fan of this particular Kelly's because they make the best crab dip. It's miles beyond the other Kelly's that serve the same dish. I'm also a fan of this Kelly's because our waitress was on top of things. Attentive, knowledgable, funny, and talkative (but not the obnoxious talkative where you wish she would go away because you're trying to eat talkative). I think her name was Megan. I ordered the french dip and it was a little salty, but that could have been the au jus. My fries were also a little soggy, I like them crispy. My boyfriend ordered the smoke house burger (YUM) with sweet potato fries. OHMYGOODNESS...they serve them with a side of special sauce that is a concoction of ranch and bbq sauce/spices and it was glorious with the sweet potato fries. I asked the waitress how long they had been serving this dip and she said about a year but she didn't know if other places were serving it too. They must not be, because before the Kelly's at Pembroke closed I was there are least every couple of weeks for lunch with an old co-worker and they didn't have this sauce. Ohwell...I know the Kelly's Greenbrier does and it's worth the trip for me it's that damn good!! My only complaint, other than the soggy fries, was that this establishment is smoking and non-smoking. While the smoking section is blocked off, it is the bar section and when the door opens the smoke can be smelled within the non-smoking section. If you despise smoke, you may want to ask to sit far away from the smoking section. read more

I actually downloaded yelp for the first time to see their reviews to see if it was just me. After visiting for the first time, only because the place I wanted to try was closing down, must say I do not recommend. Very poor presentation for fajitas. After being seated I was not expecting much considering it is not a Mexican restaurant... but after finding out from the server that their "only rotating" beer was Sam Adam's winter lager... I ordered a craft draft beer on the menu. Did not much enjoy, and ordered a marg to go with the very poor presentation of fajitas. Was the worst I've ever tried. Asked if the bartender made it, politely asked if he could help and fix it. Added sprite. So I asked for a beer instead, one I notice not on the menu since I went in person from the table to find out if there was a solution. Margarita not even okay at all, still. Maybe worse after the sprite. Even more syrupy after the over pour of sour mix, maybe just ice and soda water would have helped. He gave an oversized large draft beer at full price to make amends. We went to Smoky Bones, but the wait was so long that we decided to find something else. Mainly because we had a hungry toddler with us. After considering 3-4 other places we passed Kelly's and decided to call it. Things started off good. We were seated rather promptly and the host even brought out our drinks. That should've been a little red flag that the host took our drink orders instead of the waitress. A little while later the waitress came and asked us for our drink order. We looked at each other and then looked at her with a smile. I assumed any minute now she would noticed the 3 full cups sitting in front of us, but instead she just kept looking at us with this kind if blank stare. My husband finally said, "We have drinks..". She THEN looked down and did this little awkward jump, and said, "Oh, I didn't notice!" Ok...so, ok. Should we have put our finger up and excused ourselves then? Of course, we should've! Had we known how the night would progress we definitly would've! To make a long story short, the food was aight. The fried pickles and my sons mini corn dogs were good. The wings were ok. We ended up sending a plate of tenders back b/c you could hardly chew through them. We had to flag down the waitress to ask for refills EACH time, and that was no easy task. While in the town for business, I stopped in Kelly's Tavern for a dinner and was not expecting much. The hamburger I had was tasted good; it was not greasy nor dry. As with the fires, they were little hard. The service was great. Overall, the food and service was alright. However, the major issue I had with Kelly's Tavern was with the service dog sitting at the bar. The dog was sitting on a chair and at times the owner of the dog was feeding him. I don't mind seeing a service do at a restaurant, but sitting on a chair possibly drueling a couple feet over from your food? Disgusting. I will never go here again. read more

So I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE the crab dip and steak bites at Kelly's...and although I haven't been in about a year, and I usually would go to Colley Ave or Kempsville road locations, I was in this area and figured "it's a chain restaurant, how different could it be?" Boy, was I WRONG! First of all, I sat at the bar for 15 minutes watching a manager (at the register) and MULTIPLE servers walking around me while I could see my 'to-go' order sitting on the side; and not ONE server asked if I'd been helped or even told the manager that I was sitting there...(although I was of a different ethnicity of the general population there, so I figured it would continue) when I got my order, I really was in a hurry and I left, without looking at it...BIG mistake! My steak bites were HUGE (I was used to smaller pieces and more of them, not 6 'mini-steaks' sitting on pita corners making them soggy) my steak was supposed to be medium and it was well done, dry, and chewy...it had some 'heat' on it but no flavor... Then my crab dip had multiple spots where it wasn't even blended completely and I could see the heavy cream in clumps, and the container wasn't even filled...to pay relatively $22 for 2 appetizers AND they were below sub-par, I DEFINITELY won't return to this location... read more
