My husband and I stopped by here for lunch one day and it was great! The woman behind the counter was very nice. We ordered our meal and it was about a 10 minute wait until our food came out to us. My husband ordered the Chicken Shish Kebab Sandwich and I ordered the Chicken Shish Kebab Plate. Both dishes were delicious and light. This place is homey and quaint. The one wall is lined with products they sell (candy, coffee, etc.) and the other wall is lined with a huge bench with nice comfy cushions. It definitely seemed more casual place. The day that we went, there was one other patron in the store eating in but there were a few other people who came in to get food to go. Not sure how much business they get but if they aren't getting much...hopefully they get more soon. This place is definitely a hiden gem! read more

What a great find. I had heard of a Turkish place near work but until this week haven't been able to get over here. Fortunately I was having lunch with a different co-worker than I normally do and we ended up trying this gem out. I ordered the Iskender Plate which is beef doner served on top of a chopped pita bread smothered with tomato sauce and a side of white rice. My co-worker had the Chicken Shish Kebab Plate which is 2 kebabs, white rice and a garden salad. The wait was about 10 minutes for our food to be prepared and we checked out the imported food items they had in their store. Once the food arrived it looked and smelled as delicious as it tasted. Portions were perfect and the price was $10 each after including the drink. All in all a great meal and I'm looking forward to stopping in again soon and trying out some more of the menu. read more

As a resident of Chesapeake Im ashamed to say that I just experienced this place. This has been my longest standing bookmark on yelp and I will surely return often. A few things to note, although it is restaurant, it isnt in the traditional sense. You go to the counter to order and pick up your cup to get your own beverage. If seated they will bring you your food and take away your trash. For the salad bar the price for a small is $3 and large is $5, however there is only one size bowl in front of the bar, the large size, the small salad bowls are behind the counter so you must ask for that one to be charged accordingly. Also there are no salad bar refills, so get what you want while there or lose your chance for more. Skip the iceberg and get the Kale, it has been slightly cooked and seasoned. Now onto the highlight of my meal, the iskender plate, the visual is deceiving, there are soft cut up pieces of pita underneath the tender meat, topped with a non spicy tomato sauce and a large side of yogurt sauce for extra dipping. The rice must have been cooked in butter, its the softest I've ever had. My Overall experience was wonderful with only a few small misunderstandings. I will return! read more

Kervan has quickly become a favorite in our house! It's a small family owned joint and staff is always super friendly. My go to is always the beef doner. It is a great light meal and their rice is delish. If you're eating there, ask for some hot tea too. Of course, you have to order baklava for a small dessert after, it's always on point! It's been a long while since I've been here. Last time was when the restaurant was called Pasha. I remember the food being good then. I like trying new things so I ordered the Iskender Plate. My son loves Greek gyros so he got the Beef Doner. Both were good but my son liked mine better. The red sauce mixed in with the beef, chopped pita, rice, with the juice from the hot pepper sprinkled all over was a great combination. For dessert I really wanted to try the baklava but instead had the rice pudding. It was a tad soupy. Not sure if it was just made and still needed more time to set. Good portion size for 2 people. I'm with Scott B, who reviewed Kervan a week ago saying that other reviews were too kind. While this place isn't bad, it is currently overrated. Price is a little high. Portions a little small. Food a little bland. At least that's how I felt about the doner platter I got, which was precooked and just warmed up. And this was Friday at prime dinner time. However I did like looking through the selection of Turkish foods on sale, the Turkish canned drinks you can have with your meal, and the comfy couches. If you opt for the fountain drink, they have real glasses. Meh. Probably won't return, although I appreciate what they're trying to do here. I'd rather a mediocre Turkish place than another chain restaurant. Fortunately, we have better options for Mediterranean in the area. read more

So today we started out looking at Yelp to find the perfect place only to be totally let down! I want to start this review with I understand Hampton Roads has unbelievably over inflated yelp reviews. I enjoy eating at many different styles of restaurants and among those Middle Eastern. That said this had to be one of the worst lunches I have had in a long time! The food was totally bland and nondescript. Mine and my friends lunch just left much to be desired in the spice category I mean I think just a little salt may have been a 200% improvement over what we were served today. I cannot believe the reviews this place gets, and I find it hard to believe this is the first bad meal they have served. If we could all just start being a little more honest it would greatly improve our HR Yelp experience. I believe 3 starts is for it was ok, but I would not go out of my way to go back a second time. Anything that makes me feel I would have rather gone to Burger King, McDonald's, Little Ceaser's, Panda Express or Taco Bell should not have above a 3 star rating in my humble opinion. read more

But the love of good food was there! I Had the chicken Kabob, rice and salad, with sliced onions on the side. (it's the kids portion for 5.60. I do it for lunch as I don't need to nap at work.) My Fellow 50 year plus comrade had the Lamb with rice and salad and 3 orders of baklava. My youngest partner had the meat ball dish for 9.60. End result Although my senor comrade said the lamb was a little salty... He destroyed the plate. My Youngest friend could not finish all 6 meatballs, the Rice (Best Rice I've ever had.) Nor his salad... Then my partner offered us some of the Baklava, Wonderful... I was disappointed at my young friends reaction to the food... I ordered the chicken shish kebab plate...came with rice, small salad, and 2 kebabs. Also since I dined in I received the cutest mug of hot Turkish tea. The meal is prepared to order so it took a little longer than it would at a larger chain restaurant. However, it was well worth having hot, fresh, perfectly cooked food. The place is tiny but I love that sort of charm. The gentleman who runs the place is cordial and very nice. The food menu is small and prices are reasonable. I would like to give this restaurant 5 stars; however, I went in at lunch time with my name badge and everything on as I was on my lunch break and it took 25 minutes to receive my chicken shish kabob. I believe they prepare the food fresh, which is marvelous...but I wish I had known what was taking so long. Perhaps a little communication would have been great. This was my first time and I had NO idea why it was taking so long since it wasn't packed or anything. On the the great stuff... They were still customer service friendly, which I appreciate. The chicken shish kabob was delicious!!! I thought I would be disappointed after waiting so long, but I was not! I ended up having to take it to go, but the flavor is tender and juicy fabulous. If you love authentic Turkish street food, Kervan is your place. The beef doner is spiced just right, and is tender and delicious. The Kofte and the lamb is equally delicious. I was given some free Turkish tea, and paired it with the Red Lentil fingers app, it was a perfect beginning to the meal. In addition to the made to order food, they have a grocery section stocked with Turkish sweets, preserves, coffee, tea and juices as well. To top it off, they play some really cool Turkish music. Good ethnic cuisine in the Tidewater after two days of disappointing eats, was beginning to think the restaurants here were simply tourist traps for beach goers. I'm not an expert on Turkish cuisine, but have tried enough Mediterranean/Greek food, Afghan kabobs and even been to Marrakesh, not to mention just eating out alot due to my job. The Iskender plate was different than what I expected when I read Turkish gyro, still it was decent overall. Thought the baklava was excellent - in a phyllo roll, good flavor & texture. The place is hidden in a strip mall, but it is clean and like a homey cafe, come here to switch up on the run of the mill chains & bars. I had a great business lunch here recently and was completely blown away by the quality of the food and friendliness of the staff. I ordered the chicken shish kebabs, which came with two skewers of deeply flavored chicken, a small salad, grilled onions and tomatoes as well as some incredible rice. I don't usually gush about rice but this stuff was moist, fluffy and delicious. The funny thing was we were eating well past the lunch rush, which is when you expect things like rice to have dried out depending on how they store it at temperature for serving. That shows me the level of care the staff puts into such a small detail. Generally when I pick up on something like that, I can bet that everything else with the restaurant is going to be perfect, and it was. To finish up we ordered some Turkish coffee and baklava. Our waitress even doubled up on the baklava (a perk of being a late lunch customer??) which normally I would turn down because I find it too sweet but when eaten along the strong coffee, it was superb. I wouldn't recommend them, unfortunately. My friend went in for our orders. We had 2 lamb plates and a beef gyro. I don't really like dry meat so I asked if they had extra sauce. The only sauce they had available was tzatziki so I requested that however, they forgot to put it in the little to go box. The little squares of lamb were extremely small and little on the dry side so I really wish they'd added some sauce of any kind. The flavor was okay but nothing to brag about and nothing that I'll miss if I never order it again. Again, I do not plan to ever return there. My friend asked if I knew it was a little hole in the wall place and I said, "Yes". I'd never been there but I'd read the Yelp reviews and I knew the strip mall very well. The portions are small but the lamb plates were $11 so some would say it's to be expected. The lamb came with a little bag of Utz potato chips and a tiny portion of iceburg lettuce and tomato. I really wanted to like this place because I wanted a restaurant to frequent for lamb. This is not it. The pictures look tastier than the food was by a long shot.
