I've taking the train so many times from this area but I have never noticed this little kew garden gem. I have been a customer of KGC since 2001. It seems the place is under new management or ownership . While the quality of food doesn't seem to have changed, the service and presentation have. First, I don't like being barked at in a high pitched voice from halfway across the small space (from what seems to be the new manager/owner) for what I'd like to order. The vibe used to be very relaxed, casual and calm. I can feel their stress when I enter, and I bet the chickens do too. Second, in the last month or so, when I get my order home (usually a whole chicken and a small salad) the chicken is very poorly chopped; more like it was massacred by an inexperienced hand. Most of the meat is shredded, unrecognizable bits with the skin removed / hanging off. The former staff always did an excellent job of chopping the leg from thigh, and the breast in three consistent pieces. I hope these are only growing pains and the new staff/management can appreciate what seasoned customers expect. read more

My husband and I order the whole chicken meal with 6 sides and we always have plenty of leftovers. The chicken itself is normally pretty good and not too dry. It comes with a dipping sauce and pita. The smell of charcoal chicken when you step out of the subway or have to wait for the bus on Q10 is a familiar constant for those who live in or transit through Kew Gardens, and with the closing of The Chicken House, Kew Gardens lost a piece of its character. It was a big shock to see the space empty, but luckily Kew Gardens Chicken rose from the ashes of the former establishment and brought the smell of grilled meat wafting through the air back to the 11415. The menu is essentially the same: charcoal grilled chicken, rice, salad, corn, and other sides, but the quality is just a tad bit off from the original. There aren't many differences between the old and the new establishments, but the chicken is inconsistent form visit to visit: sometimes you get the perfectly charred yet juicy chicken, but more often than the chicken tends to be dry and overcooked. For the price, with a quarter chicken and two sides served with pita bread for $7, you are still getting a product that is relativity healthy and tasty, but the chicken definitely needs to be made with a little bit more care. I am also a fan of the chicken skewers (they also have pork), because they go very well on top of the salads they offer (the mango salad is especially good). Formerly known as "The Chicken House", this establishment closed and re-opened in early February as "Kew Gardens Chicken" after a number of weeks. Not sure as to whether the management is the same. Now to the food ... there are three poultry vendors in close proximity on this block. "Stop n' Go" chicken located on Queens Blvd; the recently-opened franchise "Texas Chicken and Burgers" (which offers some pretty decent halal fried chicken) -- and the one and only Kew Gardens Chicken. I've sampled all three, but while the items are slightly higher priced than Stop n' Go I find myself gravitating to this establishment. For only $4.50 you can get a hefty Quarter Chicken ("Leg and Thigh" OR "Breast and Wing"), a pita and a side of barbeque sauce. ($7.50 will get you a half and $12 will get you a WHOLE -- but honestly, I've found a quarter to be more than filling). In addition to the chicken KGC makes some pretty incredible Buffalo Wings, pork chops (halal this isn't), fried whiting fish (though I've seen salmon on occasion) and a range of side orders including mac n' cheese, grilled corn and vegetables, rice and beans (I personally recommend the vegetable rice or Greek salad). Interior Decor -- this is a pretty bare bones establishment, with limited stool seating around a counter that circles the interior. Given its proximity to the Q10 bus line it can be packed during rush hour as hungry travelers stop in for a takeaway dinner -- that being said, there's nothing so peaceful as coming here on a rainy day, pulling up a stool and diving into a steaming helping of chicken doused in barbeque and watching the traffic out the window.
