Famous bowl or struggle bowl? Where is the food?
    Dee C.

While I was in line flys were landing on my leg, yes flies. The restaurant was full of them. The place was a little messy, with paper on the floor and such. The staff was helpful and kind. I got 3 famous bowls one of them was almost empty which was weird. there were like 3 corn kernels in there.

Ordered the 4 pc. Tender combo and originally got regular bone in wings. This has happened to me every single time I've gone to KFC at the Waltham location. Went back to get the tenders and they gave me the thinnest tenders possible. The employees at this location are rude and don't care about mixing up orders. Never going back to KFC ever again. If you're craving it go to the Allston KFC. The one is Waltham is an absolute horror show. While I was in there a doordasher was also complaining because they messed up the order he was picking up and they weren't helping him. This KFC messes up everyone's orders consistently. Probably the only thing consistent about this store.

We arrived a little less than an hour before closing time but we were still happily served. Let me be clear, this is a Ugandan restaurant. Okay, moving on. Our food came out, steaming hot and fresh- nothing seemed like it was reheated (try eating reheated posho y'all). We stayed long after the restaurant was closed to finish our food which really gave me the real homey Ugandan vibes. There were also a bunch of Ugandan uncles in the corner just chatting it up the entire time which was fun. Also, there's a store with Ugandan products, raw frozen cassava/matooke, bitenge, and some other Ugandan staples like Royco, Blueband, Majaani, etc!

I can see from the reviews that some people are expecting a smooth assembly line operation like you might expect if you were eating at a cafeteria in Den Bosch in the Netherlands--which I've done. This ain't that. But bring your patience and adaptability and a smile and you'll be rewarded with a hearty country meal East African style. If you want anything spicy ask for it. In the 3rd world in my experience my Anglo looks meant they leave out the spiciness unless you ask otherwise. The vibe is like a Ugandan version of a British village pub full of locals socializing. If you want to meet every Ugandan expat in the Boston area, come on by. But while most of the people were Ugandan we obvious non-Ugandans were greeted with open arms. We asked them to just bring us dinner, and so they did. One interesting thing was the Indian influence--Uganda had had a large Indian community there until Idi Amin appropriated everything they had and kicked them out of the country. I guess some? many? have returned since Idi Amin was kicked out himself. So among the more obviously indigenous chicken stew and cooked plantains as a major starch was samosas and chapatis, much as you'd expect to find in an Indian restaurant. Portions were so big I got two and a half additional meals out of it. I've tried a lot of cuisines--I live in the SF Bay Area which is one of the most multicultural places on Earth--so for me this wasn't all that exotic. Ethiopian food is a lot moreso and a lot hotter, for example. So someone who's only mildly adventurous should do fine here. Actually Cajun cooking from Louisiana is more exotic, frankly. And hotter. And there's nothing on Karubu's menu like that Gulf Cajun fave "Bucket of Mud Bugs" (crawfish). Both my wife and our local friend who dined with us enjoyed our meal, and I look forward to returning on our next trip to Greater Boston. Interestingly both one of our Uber drivers and the night clerk at our hotel were Ugandan and familiar with Karibu and very pleased that we planned to dine there. A lot of the infrastructure people we deal with as we travel are really very interesting people if you talk with them and don't just treat them like they're invisible. And it can make your travels more interesting than just going somewhere and doing the standard tourist things.

I ordered the sliders with fries, and everything came out fresh and hot. The spice levels are customizable, which is great whether you like mild flavors or extra heat. The fries were well-seasoned and paired perfectly with the signature Dave's sauce. The portions were generous, making it a good value for the price. The restaurant had a fun atmosphere, and the staff was friendly and efficient. Overall, Dave's Hot Chicken delivers delicious food, bold flavors, and satisfying portions. If you're a fan of spicy chicken sandwiches or tenders, it's definitely worth a visit. I would give it a 5 out of 5 stars.

Chili's is hard to find around me. This time I ordered from their new kiosks....and it didn't even print my receipt out, but whatever my order was in on the screen. None of hte workers knew what to do about the machine and lack of a receipt but it didn't bother my order. This location also has a new tv screen with order status based on the platform you ordered from. Helpful. We got the usual, a couple of #2 combos. One of them I got one sandiwch mild and the other spicy but both of them tasted mild or something...it had zero heat at all. Funny thing is, the color of the sandwiches looked normal from all of my many previous orders, but flavor wise, they tasted the same. Weird. Still enjoyed them. The mozzarella sticks - I ordered a 5 pack. I can tell you size wise, they are very similar to the Chili's sticks. The crunch on these from Dave's was crunchier IMHO. However, the cheese is packed less densely here vs Chilis. The cheese pull is just as good on this first try, despite less cheese inside. When I ordered the 5 pack, it allowed only ONE spice level option. I wish I could've gotten some medium and some spicy etc. Not very sharing friendly. The staff was super friendly as usual. No problem getting my order and extra sauce packets etc. The place continues to look clean and well maintained. This location and framingham are my 2 fave locations for Dave's.

I'm honestly glad that I waited to post my original review with a lower rating and thought through…read morethe experience a little bit more. As always, I find it a bit harder to review fusion spots. Not just any fusion either, but one that is all over the world map. It's easy to just nitpick one dish and use it to judge everything else; but what about that is remotely fair? For example, their Beef Rendang (a dish that I'm very familiar with - including the different regional renditions) is more like a hint towards what "real" Beef Rendang is. I don't even need to speak on behalf of the Filipinos regarding their adobo (which I also grew up on) who are infamous to show up on public forums to criticize and say "that's not how my grandmother makes it" (lol). What did come to mind is the old quote that many often find negative but actually was meant to be a positive phrase (if the last part isn't so often omitted). "Jack of all trades, master of none, though often times better than a master of one". That definitely applies here with their style of food. There's a lot going on and a good portal to the true potential of each dish. Definitely give them a try! Portions are good and the food is definitely tasty!

Flavor Boom is one of those places I appreciate having nearby when I didn't bring lunch and need…read moresomething fast, filling, and actually tasty. The people there have always been nice, and the food has a home-cooked quality to it. It's not fancy, not really a sit-down place, but comforting in a weekday lunch kind of way. There might be a tiny table for two, but I would think of this as a takeout spot. I've tried a handful of dishes here. The black pepper pork is probably my favorite and, in my opinion, the strongest thing on the menu. The chicken adobo is solid, the tangy tamarind chicken is good, and the chicken karahi was tasty, though the chicken itself was a little dry. I also tried the beef rendang, which was not really beef rendang to me. Maybe beef-rendang-inspired? It read more like a beef stew with potatoes. Still tasty, but I would not go in expecting traditional rendang. A couple caveats: friends have mentioned that the rice can be a little dry or uneven at dinner time, and I do think some dishes can get salty toward the end of the day. Maybe the sauce has been sitting and reducing? Unclear. I usually go for lunch, and that seems like the move. Price-wise, it does add up if you're getting lunch here every day. My recent order (large size) came out to about $17 after tax and tip. If I get the large, I can usually stretch it into two meals, so that feels more reasonable, but these are "pleasantly full" meals, not "I have defeated myself" meals. My practical advice: if you're nearby, rushing for lunch, and forgot to bring your own food, this is a very useful spot. If you're not ravenously hungry, get the large and split it into two meals. Also, I wouldn't necessarily add string beans because it seems like they already include a small amount. I probably wouldn't eat here every day because I think I'd get bored, but I'm glad it exists. While Flavor Boom is not my every-day lunch, it is indeed my "I forgot food and need something warm, filling, and tasty before my next meeting" lunch.

The bb.q in our name stands for "Best of the Best Quality", and that's exactly what you can expect from every one of our restaurants." Now, let's go into our review why this bb.q Chicken Allston's (i.e., Allston Branch's) very existence directly refutes the corporate bb.q Chicken's statement. And, they should either do something about it or admit that their "PROMISE" is nothing more than marketing PR. Here's the review: This bb.q Chicken Allston is the worst bb.q Chicken in all of the Greater Boston area. If had tried this place before becoming hooked on the consistently satisfying orders (from the various other branches), we would've never return as a customer to any of the bb.q Chicken locations. Have been regulars at Boylston (Downtown), Kenmore (near BU), JP, and Quincy... All appeared to met the basics requirements for the past 3+ years, until this Allston Branch came into the picture. The chicken here at Allston Branch was dried and tasteless. They knew or should've known that their overly burnt chicken was abnormal. The notion that they sold it as if nothing was wrong was just deceptive. Further, three pieces were missing. Will leave to the owner and other readers to decide the rationale for missing three pieces... Finally, the horrible reviews at this Allston location compared to the reputation of bb.q Chicken generally is consistent across Yelp/Google/word of mouth... Rather than the owner/manager trying to soften the tone (which they appears to be doing, to at least appear like they know how to confront upset customers appropriately), it would be smarter for them to choose one or both of: 1. actually finally fix their consistent subpar quality and/or 2. quit this business and go focus on, say, other way of making a living that does not require producing meals to customers. Otherwise, the reputable bb.q Chicken business ought to shut this Allston location down permanently and ban this incompetent owner/management from forever running one of its franchise. It is seriously ruining bb.q Chicken still new but growing reputation/brand, which is extremely important in today's world.
