While serving three weeks in the US Naval Reserve I had the privilege and honor of taking up residence at the Thistle hotel near Hyde Park. As a connoisseur of curries, I thought I would see what the London had to offer. The offerings were plentiful. Where I come form there is a bar on every street corner. In London there is also a bar on every street corner -- and a Tandoori Restaurant. I stumbled across Kahn's because I was feeling nostalgic for a little apartment I stayed at when I was a kid about 16 years prior. Nearby Queenways Station was/is a cornucopia of ethic diversity - a Catholic Church was sandwiched between a donar kebab stand and curry house. A little further up street was a pedestrian mall and....Khans. The nice thing about Khan's from what I recall was the affordability. You could easily spend 50 quid for a dinner out in London, but Khan's was perhaps half that price. Of course, I had the Chicken Tikka Masala which was a mouth watering feast of spicy succulence. Wash that down with a King Fisher and little nan bread, you have just had a quintessential London "ruby." I highly recommend it. Just wish I could snap my fingers and be in the dining room. read more

My wife and I have been to Khan's several times since 1980, so we can say we've been through their historical passages in the last, say, 30 years. The last time we had a dinner at Khan's was on last April; we started the meal with onion bhajis and sag paneer (very well done) than my wife had her usual vegetable biryani (made in the correct way, not dry has it happens in other restaurants) while I had their delicious chicken bourji. Service was quick enough, the waiter was kind, the only (usual) upset is that they are very slow when it comes to take you the check. We would also like to have some Indian beer with our Indian food (no alcohol allowed), but we can live with it. In a nutshell, a good price for some good Indian food. We'll definitely come back. read more

Been there thrice! Always have a lovely time. They're quick and the food is always delicious and pipin' hot. Gotta be careful to check how spicy your meal is going to be though! Because, I can stand heat but not a whole meal's worth. The lassies are great but a bit heavy after a meal. You'll be better off with a nice glass of fresh juice. I know I am! I've noticed that the food is always more than we can handle. I wouldn't order a seperate dish of rice for each person, for example; three for four is more than enough. I've never tried any of the deserts there but I wasn't tempted much, to be honest. Overall, this is a great place for friends and family alike. Larger groups will not feel out of place at all! This will always be a place I recommend to friends and family. read more

Trassssh. Im from Cali but ya boy been in Lil India & Pakistani food and this place was horrendous. The waiter was rude and just cold. The food itself was a joke they brought two small ass samosas and the plates were tiny. On top of that the CURRY WAS SWEET. Who makes sweet chicken tikka? After a day of photography under dreary skies, my dramatic portrait photography group needed a location to share shots and refuel. The main meals at Khan's Restaurant start at £5.15 per dish with the usual naan and rice options to order separately. I ordered a staple chicken korma, pilau rice and bottled water. While a korma may be a not-so-adventurous choice it is generally a good gauge to the quality of an Indian restaurant. The patient service soon began to lack, our orders were scattered around the table without being announced and left me serving dollops of paneer onto my bed of rice before realize it all smelled wrong. The food itself was satisfactory and served the purpose of filling my stomach void but there is nothing fabulous to report. The flavour lacked lustre and was without that special touch. The single bill kept mobile calculators at hand and they were slow to deal with debit card payment. While Khan's won't be making the cut for my repeat visit list, the good company made the experience not all-in-all bad. read more

This place has fantastic Indian food without any frills. The restaurant itself is very outdated... I doubt they've made a change to the inside since the 1970's but that certainly doesn't affect the food. The restaurant is quite large with dining rooms on both the ground level and in the basement. The walls are painted with desert and palm tree murals which adds to the outdated yet wonderful tackyness of the place. The food here is absolutely what makes a trip here worthwhile though. They've got an extensive menu of traditional Indian options. The portions are small enough that you can get a few dishes and share them if you're with a group. Among my favorites are the chicken tikka masala, the lamb tikka biryani (yum yum yum) and the sag. Their mango lassie is also delicious! read more

I used to go to this place for the last 35 years! It was a very good place where you used to sit at long tables and meet other diners. It was massive, very good value, disorganised but good fun. Very unfortunately the new owners a few years ago have totally destroyed its ambiance. Its now lots of little individual tables. They will not allow wine to be served or taken there! This is one of my first meals if I am in London. The service is good. The prices are reasonable. The food is stellar!!

The Family I was staying with recommended this place, it's been open for many many years and it's still doing well. It was very good and the staff were very nice and attentive! I had the chutneys then the chicken jalfrezi along with the raita yogurt and some rice and Naan bread. Jalfrezi wasn't overwhelmingly spicy, yogurt and naan help balance the spice level (recommended for those who are sensitive to spicy foods). One of the best Indian places I've been to. read more

when oZo is in London we always hit this spot! The Chicken Jalfezi is JalCrazy good!!! My band has even wrote songs bout this place.. Here's a funny story bout this spot... One time oZo was eating here and we told the Waiter that the food was "crazy good" . He thought that we were calling him crazy ... So he tripped out and started yelling at us "CRAZY? I'LL SHOW YOU CRAZY" !!! Just a lil miss communication. We are yanks! Anyways ... Be careful with the lunch-time pricing: £9.50 for the limited-choice all-you-can-eat buffet; or £4.50 for the 1-item special lunch menu. Their confusing signs can be tricky. Next time I'll do the a-la-carte instead of the buffet, which was not as good as other's: one of the chicken choices was cold - it's burner was off until I told the waiter. I had gone to Khan's for an early dinner on a sunday (we probably stopped here because we were too tired to walk in the cold to Urban Turban) ... and i left disappointed. On reading the reviews here, i can better appreciate this place as the expectations aren't mismatched any more. Now Westbourne grove is my favourite street in London in terms of food. You have so many good restaurants serving a variety of cuisines. I have had very good experiences in most of them ... not so here. Don't get me wrong ... the food is good. The thali here is probably one of the best value you can get for Indian meals in Zone 1. For less than £11 you can get rice, 2 curries, papad, a starter and a huge naan. They taste pretty good too. But the service is shabby to say the least. So much so that after i had finally paid by credit card, the server came and left the card on top of some gravy that had fallen on the table cloth. In spite of the good food, i left with a bitter after-taste. Yes, the food is good and cheap ... and would have surely been a regular destination for me in my student days ... but not any more. read more

I've been going to Khan's since it opened. There was a period about 10 years ago when the quality dropped, but now it's pretty damn good again. Basically it's all about the Butter Chicken, which is to my taste the best in the known Universe. And I've had a few. Unbelievable. Peshwari naan & muttar paneer also great. I can understand that some people don't like the staff, though I find them ok. Also the few times where I've tried random stuff from the menu I have been dissapointed, so perhaps it's not all great. Stick with the chef's recommendations, that's what they do best. ; ) read more

I live in Hollywood, CA but Kahn's is one of the places i sometimes miss when I'm over here. I recall these rainy winters in London when all you can think about is comfort food. Kahn's has very good Dall a lentil soup, and the lamb korma was delicious, and the sag aloo, the mango lassi and the rose lassi. The place is nothing special but it's always there, always delicious. Crowded, loud, rushed.....and excellent food. There is some serious heat in the spicy dishes here, and the waiters really don't want to hear you fumble through what you "think you might want" to eat. I think this was the first curry joint that I visited when I moved to London in 2001. I remember being mildly impressed but wondering so, what's all the fuss about how great the Indian food is in Britain? I've since had meals at other South Asian restaurants that knocked my socks off. A nice thing about Khan's is the gorgeous murals on the walls. I also remember the service to be exceptional (which at the time I didn't realize just how exceptional good service is in this country!). All in all, I'd say it's a good one to keep in mind. If I lived nearby I'd probably go there from time to time (I think they do takeaway too). It's definitely worth a try if only to admire the pretty paintings on the walls. read more

Let me just say in comparison to anything I've had in NY (Bricklane, Minar) Khans is very good Indian style curry. Tandoori chicken was moist and well seasoned. Both the seafood and lamb curries were flavourful but my complaint is the sauce was indistinguishable. I came from San Diego, CA to visit London with my family. I had an absolutely wonderful time staying in the Hyde Park area and exploring one of the most historic and popular cities of the world. Having a Pakistani background, my family and I had to try this restaurant. We ordered the usual for a desi person: biryani, chicken tikka, saag, butter chicken, and naan. Everything was delicious. We were amazed at the quality, taste, and presentation the food had. In the west coast of the U.S., we do have a few popular Pakistani restaurants such as Shalimar, Shahnawaz, Al-watan, Noorani, Tandoori Fresh and many others. Each of these have their own tastes and masalas that lead to their deliciousness, but when I came to Khan's I noticed something else that was in our favor. The portions. Perfectly sized portions for families were what got us to love this place. I really appreciate when business owners keep the customers in mind and have reasonable portions. If you go to Bombay Masala in New York City, you get the smallest portions, for the largest price tag. That place wasn't even tasty, and the whole tip process was a mess. So if you are ever in London and knowing about the large Pakistani population there, I'm sure you would like to give the cuisine a try. Khan's is the place to go. I used to live across the road from Khan's, and still to today continue to go back there for meals. If possible try to sit in the front portion of the restaurant as this is the nicer area, with it's great interior of artificial palm trees and a painted sky. Khans has more of a following because of their name than anything else.The staff's attitude is as if they are doing you a favour. It is a nice large venue in case you are a big group or having a function. The view of all the dirty dishes while eating your meal isn't the greatest one. The food isn't bad but more attention could be paid to service, decor and general cleanliness. The best thing that they have going for them is their location. I would rather go to a place in Whitechapel like Lahori Kebab House or Tayyabs any day. read more

Great Indian!This is one of my favourite Indian haunts in London. I went 20 years ago as a student and then visited it again last year on a Sunday lunchtime and recalled how good it was. I have since been back afew times however, maybe its my age.but I do prefer it at lunchtime/early evening rather than a Friday / saturday night. That's when the waiters do become slightly rude and more harassed!The food is great - good Indian cuisine - I like the biryiani's - great sauces. Do remember it doesn't serve alcohol, however there is a good pub on the corber for a few drinks before hand! You seeperfect Sunday afternoon!Great value too! read more

Khans has been around for ages and a mainstay of the Indian cuisine circuit. It was one of the first halal restaurants and thus very popular with the sub-continent community. The décor is a little dated but the food is very very good. All at a reasonable price too. The food is traditional Pakistani/Indian thus you will find all your fav curries there. The tandoori dishes are exceptional and the mango lassi is immense. read more

I had heard this place was the Indian version of the Chinese Won Key in China Town - a fun churn them out place with good food.So I wasn't surprised to be greeted by Rude Waiters from the start. However, this is the only entertaining thing about the place. If you think thats entertaining.The food was dire. I'm not sure how they managed to mess up the chutneys and lime sauce (it was salty) but they did. The curries were beyond dire - i've experienced better sauce from the cheapest jar of sauce in a supermarket. I think you even get better curries in most of the states (not known for their curries). They no longer serve Alcohol of any kind - you can't even bring your own to the place, a feature often common with the Indians on Brick Lane. read more
