The restaurant interior seems to be under construction/ renovation. Elated to see they updated their menu with some written descriptions and photos of the each food items. This really helps with deciding factors for some customers who might not be familiar with Cambodian food. Service provided by a young gentleman was great , He was friendly , attentive and apologetic . What a disappointment uuggghhh!!!!! Cha qua ( fry breads/ fry donuts) At first glance myself and my mom already knew the Cha qua was not cooked properly , it has some weight to it, ( should be light and fluffy) the dough was raw inside. I sent it back. The waiter was apologetic and a few minutes later came out with a new batch of Cha qua . I kid you not, I just chuckled and shook my head . I explained to the waiter, clearly the cha qua is not cooked properly, has a strong odor smell of yeast and the flour is not cooked through and as an experienced home cooks between my mom & myself the dough did not have time to rise and the flour ratio was not properly measured. The young waiter apologized once more and came back from the kitchen explaining what my mom and I had speculated . We asked that he not charge us for the cha qua. So , I didn't think this could get any worse right? LOL!! Cha mee khatang ( similar to chow fun / pad see ew ) I opted for seafood as protein of choice, with shrimps, imitation crabs & squids . The Chinese broccoli was cooked perfectly. Except this dish didn't have much flavor. I rate it 2/5 BBQ roasted duck $25 for a half order. I been anticipating to try their duck for a few years now. To my dismay it was awful , damn! I expected so much more and it didn't meet my expectations. The skin was not crispy, had a funky gamy scent & tasteless flavor and came out cold at that. Rate 2/5 Baw Baw Kreung ( Cambodian innards / pork blood rice porridge. ) Deep sighs ... another disappointment dish . The rice porridge lacks savory taste, it was a tad under salt , by adding the fermented soybeans helps uplift the flavor. I find it gross! the minuscule fragments innards pieces has a bowel odor taste in our mouths. 1/5 Boat Noodle soup , was okay but needed some improvement. The noodles were too overcooked , texture was mushy, the flavor didn't have the savory beefy aroma, appreciate the fresh ong choy vegetables Rate3/5 Beef Stew w/ bread , crunchy crispy hot bread always hit the spot, dunk in hot beefy stew warms the heart. The event started at 6 pm, and we expected the seven course dinner to begin around 7 pm, but they didn't start serving until almost 8 pm. By then, everyone was getting hungry. The servers also didn't check on any of the tables throughout the dinner. They simply brought out each course and left. They even started cleaning up about 30 minutes before the event ended. That would've been fine if the tables had been empty, but they actually asked us to get out of our seats so they could remove the table and chair linens. As for the food, some dishes were good while others were just average: Traditional cold plate: 4/5 - I liked the century eggs, and the pickled vegetables were refreshing. Beef steak with anchovy sauce: 3/5 - The beef was well seasoned and nicely charred, but it didn't come with the anchovy sauce that was listed on the menu. House special lobster with egg noodles: 4/5 - The lobster was good, and the noodles were flavorful, but they could've been cooked a little longer since they were a bit too al dente for my taste. Crab meat soup: 3/5 - The soup was thick and flavorful, but it barely had any crab. I'm not sure what else was in it, but it had white square pieces that reminded me of chicharrones with a seafood flavor. House special fried rice: 4/5 - It was flavorful and had plenty of Chinese sausage, but I wish it had more shrimp. My wife and I walked to the Long Beach Promenade to check it out. Unlike the Farmer's Market that is held in the same area, recorded music blared from a DJ located at the center of the market, drawing you in. The 20 or so stalls were a mix of food vendors (some freshly prepared, mostly prepackaged) and folks selling crafts, jewelry and apparel. I didn't recognize any vendors from ones that I've seen at previous farmer's markets in the past. It's basically one block, so doesn't take long to peruse every vendor. Vendors were friendly, eager to inform/teach. Didn't end up buying anything this time, but good to know about this, since within walking distance.

I ordered the Thai boat noodles , and the broth was really good and flavorful. The meat was also pretty tender. It was nice coming back after so many years, and I'm happy to see that the food is still good!

I can't speak to authenticity, I'm not Khmer/Cambodian, but I've enjoyed this place and my Khmer friends said it is pretty authentic. They're right off of the PCH but they have a parking lot in back. They are decorated with a bunch of Khmer decor. I've been there for small parties, and bigger parties and the staff have worked fast and were responsive to our needs. I've really enjoyed their Khmer Beef Jerky, which is seasoned well and can be a little tough (it's jerky) but I'd suggest cutting it with knife. Their curries and skewers are also pretty flavorful and go well with rice. Times I've been there the place has been pretty full, so it seems to be a popular space. Next time I'm in town I would go back to Sophy's.
