Know that in advance so you can relax with friends and enjoy the scenery. Cash only. Khun Pic offers the best tofu salad rolls in the city. The addition of apple provides a delightful sweet crunch and paired with their peanut sauce is just lovely. I got the tofu Thai fried rice and have never seen a dish so packed full of veggies. Snow peas, asparagus, green onion, purple cauliflower, etc. It was absolutely amazing and the veggies were perfectly cooked and the dish felt lighter than a traditional fried rice. The spice scale is 1-5 and since I don't tolerate spice, I got a 1. My friends for a 3 and said they could have gone spicier. I tried their 3 and honestly, it was pretty mild. Tucked away in their private little forest is a small boutique culinary gem. Kuhns is owned by and husband and wife who have been serving authentic home made Thai food here for ~ 27 years! Their menu is limited but with that said every dish is amazing with wonderful flavor and textures. Their spicy fried barbecued cat fish was spectacular!! Best pad Thai I've had in a long time! The restaurant is really hidden away in some trees and it's beautiful from the outside, but they are just doing to go orders right now. You can text your order in and it's recommended to order a few hours in advance. John came outside to bring us our food when it was ready and he was so nice! The pad Thai had so many delicious and fresh veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, and more. Great ratio of peanuts, lime and bean sprouts. I ordered medium spice and it was a perfect little kick. Also the portions are absolutely gargantuan! This is Portland's ultimate hidden gem. It is my first suggestion when someone from out of town is visiting. The food is absolutely incredible. It is operated by a husband (waiter) and wife (chef) and you get to dine in their home! Both interior and patio have such a warm and unique vibe. It really feels like you're eating a home cooked meal. This place is only open 3 days a week (and for only 3 hours a day). Belmont is home to some wonderful traditions - the little yellow shop at SE 20th that deals in car batteries, the amazing Movie Madness, and, if you can find it behind the vines, Khun Pic's. The food and the experience are well worth the search and the leisurely pace that makes dining here an experience. I was not able to confirm this, but I firmly believe that my sources were reliable when I heard that the chef at Khun Pic's and the chef at Lemongrass are sisters, and that their parents ran Bangkok Kitchen that used to be at 25th and Belmont. Whether this is true or not, Lemongrass and Khun Pic's have a lot in common - located in old houses, basically 2 person operations, and phenomenal food. We recently made our first Covid era visit, and the menu seemed somewhat pared down from what I recall, but there was no trouble finding more tempting things listed than we could have possibly eaten. The fried tofu with peanut sauce was a highlight - if I could reliably know that tofu would be prepared this well, I'd order it more often. The patio here is one of the nicest outdoor dining spaces I've ever been to. Pro tip - the chef at Khun Pic's has been known to decide to shut down early, so arriving early boosts your chances for getting fed on a given evening. The husband takes care of the customers and the wife cooks the dishes. The couple are delightful and friendly people who operate the restaurant during when they want. The ambiance and decor is charming and warm. Don't expect super rapid service as the husband takes care of all of the tables which aren't too many but.... I have never felt like "OMG where is our food!" All of the dishes we have ordered have been beyond exceptional. The curry changes daily depending on what she feels like making and we have never been disappointed. Our experience after leaving is like we have had dinner in someone's home who happens to be an exceptional Chef and who makes you feel welcome in their home. If you're patient, the food is out of this world and the best Thai food I've had outside of Thailand. The menu is limited but literally everything is a winner. The hours here are limited as well, so it's best to call to see if they are even open for the day. The garden outside is magical. We love sitting in the secret garden and having a nice conversation in a peaceful atmosphere. It's a husband and wife team and that's it. The husband waits on the tables and always seems frazzled. So when you order, be clear on what you want and don't substitute or make revisions as it stops up the entire restaurant. I've been coming here for 21 years and the food, the ambience and the staff are typical Portland. I'll never forget when I came in 2002 and my boyfriend and I ordered fried tofu. It took 45-60 minutes to come out. We devoured it before our mains. About 45 minutes into waiting for our mains the husband/server came out and told us his wife/cook had to take a break and watch Survivor. Another 30 minutes passed and we got our food. It was delicious. Should they hire an extra person? Beyond yes. But that would totally disrupt the bizarre dining experience and food. As old Portland restaurant institutions keep slipping away it's important to support restaurants like Kuhn Pics, lest they go the way of the dinosaurs. read more

I had been wanting to try this place out for so long but always hesitated because I heard it's usually busy and the service is really slow. I finally decided to check it out on a Friday evening around 8pm. Several tables were taken but not crowded at all. We realized it was cash/check only but was able to get some cash from an ATM located in a convenience store across the street. Jon is very welcoming. He kindly reminded us and apologized a couple of times for the slow service but we didn't mind it at all, one because we expected slow service and two maybe we were just lucky but it wasn't bad at all. We ordered the drunken noodles with prawns and the catfish; both were delicious. The catfish was thinly battered and perfectly fried. The sauce was a little sweet; not what we expected but tasty! Despite being covered in sauce, the fish was still super crispy. Two of the most lovely people I have had the luck to meet. They are both incredible people. The food is phenomenal and the atmosphere is perfect for a slow meal with good company. What a surreal experience. Khun Pic's has been on our list for years. Seriously. However the relatively nonexistent operating hours and warnings of food served in slow-mo have kept us away. We finally snuck in to try the food, and I can easily say that it's worth the hassle. Khun Pic's is literally the secret garden of Belmont. This little grown-in patio/house setup offers a sweet little respite from the nonstop traffic of Belmont. It's like you step out of Portland and in to Bangkok. The green shroud of trees and vines walling the patio off from the road have the feel of a tropical veranda. It's a husband and wife team that runs this place, and that's pretty much it. Our dinner experience here was a full 2.5 hours, but not because the food is slow. Fortunately, we brought some playing cards for the expanses of time while hanging out on the patio waiting for menus, for our order to be taken, and then for our food. It all took forever. However the surreal part is that it was all done with a smile and a humble sense of humor. The calm exuded by the husband half of the team helped us through our waiting ordeal. And what did we wait for? $41 worth of food - a huge heaping helping of Som Tum (green papaya salad) that's some of the best I've had anywhere in the states, a nice large portion of Pad Kee Mao (drunken noodle) with a ton of fresh veggies and tofu, and an overflowing bowl of Gang Dang (green curry) made again with fresh veggies including crisp peas, yellow and green summer squash, two types of cabbage, and a pile of bamboo shoots. The noodles and curry were both fantastic - some of the better of each dish I've had in town as well. The spice, ordered medium, was a little lacking but the depth and layers of complex fresh flavors made up for it in spades. You can tell each and every dish is made from scratch. As we sat out at a little patio table on the brick porch under some string-lights and the quieting cover of green vines and fig tree we soaked up the dynamic scratch flavors. We enjoyed the shit out of this food. Open only a few days a week, from 6-9pm, it's hard to get in this joint. Especially if you don't have a ton of time on your hands. And if you come late (like we did) they may be out of items. But on those rare occasions when you're willing to dedicate some time to an adventure, this is totally worth it. read more

I am always wary of a restaurant that gets hyped up a lot for fear it will not live up to expectations. This place lived up to the hype. Most of the time I think Thai food will he just like any other Thai restaurant. I really enjoyed the food here though. I'm not really a "fancy restaurant" kind of guy. And these dishes seemed more of the "home style" variety. Not to say that they were not delicious or presented well. They definitely were! But that "home style" touch put it over the top (which makes sense since, as I have read, the dishes are all prepared in an actual house with the homeowners making the food themselves). First of all, I think it's important to get this out of the way. Thai food is not my favorite cuisine. Not even a little bit. But most of the time, they do a killer fried rice, and I like that. In my opinion, the reason Thai restaurants are so popular and there is seemingly one on every corner, is because almost everything they make contains inordinate amounts of sugar. Yeah, why do you think all the dishes are so sweet and tasty. It's because of sugar. As one who is seriously trying to cut down on the intake of that deadly substance, I avoid Thai food like the plague. If you're a diabetic it's probably the last place you want to eat. Now, on to Khun Pic's. Evidently, and rumor has it, Khun Pic is the only person working in the entire kitchen. Her husband is the only person serving tables. This makes for a very SLOOOWWW experience, especially if there is any kind of a dinner crowd. We knew that going into it and tried to prepare ourselves. It took nearly 1 hour and 15 minutes for us to get our food. Our orders were simple, with the exception of course, I requested my dish be made sugar free. He said she probably isn't going to like that because even she admits that it's not Thai food without that one ingredient. Then he said she would probably be OK with it if she thought I was diabetic and he said he wouldn't tell her otherwise. After we placed our orders it became an issue of trying to figure out what to do. Tic toc, tic toc... the minutes passed oh so painfully slowly. You can only admire the decor for so long and yes, it's really cool. Khun Pic's is an old Victorian nestled neatly behind a fenced in, overgrown yard, which definitely adds to the charm. The interior is nicely decorated. The paint, wallpaper, and fixtures, all lend themselves nicely to maintaining the authentic Victorian appearance. Thank God for smart phones because there is nothing like a friendly game of cribbage with your mate to pass the time. Finally, the food arrived but I'm still uncertain if it was worth the wait. I had the vegetable curry stir fry, though for the life of me, I couldn't find the curry. The sauce was extremely salty which I'm sure is usually hidden by the sugar. Oh well. The Pad Kee Mau was good but we were expecting the super wide flat rice noodle. We enjoyed the meal anyway. If you want to eat at Khun Pic's plan it well. I would recommend getting there when they open. Otherwise you might as well plan your entire evening around your Khun Pic's experience. read more

Food is pretty good but painfully slow. I'm happy to wait for a meal, but i think they need help in the kitchen. It's admirable that there are only two people working here, but even the owner noted that it's slower than it was when they were younger. I've been here twice. Once less busy and food took much longer than expected. The second time it was ridiculous. Everyone in the restaurant looked annoyed with 2+ hours it took to get the mains out. I've happily had multi-hour meals before, but they came with multiple courses spread out over time. This came with slow appetizers then more than an hour before mains. For a $17 Drunken Noodle, surely they can afford a helper. That's more than double the other places around. In fact, if they hired help, they may be able to sell twice as much of those overpriced noodles by turning over tables at least once a night on a Friday. Also, they don't take any form of electronic payment and the nearby ATM doesn't let you get enough out to pay for a two people + the drinks required to get you through the delay. read more

I'm gonna say it, I think this place has some of the best Thai food in the United States! I go to Thailand 3-4 times a year and I think this has to be the closest to Thai home cooking. The papaya salad was very fresh and had the perfect balance of lime and fish sauce. The red curry was so flavorful and had amazing depth of flavor. I too was scared about a long wait, but John was excellent and did his best to get the food out as quick as possible. I went on a Saturday night and it wasn't too bad at all. More than 5** just for their beautiful garden! This place is unique and you get an experience to remember. There is no entry sign / board around so it can be little difficult to find the place. It is covered beautifully by dense trees. Once you enter inside you are transformed in this zen garden. The garden and decor is just amazing. The wall decoration is stunning and you can't get off your eyes of it. The food is equally good. The wife who is the chef cooks and husband (John) takes care of the rest. He was a nice and busy host. It was a busy evening but we did get to sit sooner than we expected. The wait time for food was more than an hour but we kind of knew it and I had been wanting to try this place since a while. If you are in a hurry then this is not a good option. When you have at least 2 hours in hand you can experience this little secret garden and fresh home cooked type meal. John recommended the specials of the day and also mentioned it has been a busy day for his wife in the kitchen so she is little frustrated. Of course we understood and who wants to make the chef agitated! We happily ordered as per his recommendations for vegetarians. It was stir fried vegetables and a green curry with vegetables. The portions are large and there were lot of seasonal vegetables added and fresh spices which made it taste exceptionally good. It was spicy as desired but the stir fry sauce was little sweet for my taste. I will recommend this place highly to experience exceptional food and little peaceful garden. Khun Pic's is located in an old house behind a gate surrounded by a tangle of leaves and vines. If you're not paying attention, it's easy to miss. So glad I spotted it one afternoon and decided to pay a visit later that evening. My boyfriend and I arrived just as the restaurant opened on a Saturday night and were the second party to be seated. We enjoyed the ambiance and decor, a mix of old Victorian architecture with Thai embellishments and details. Warm and inviting, just as you'd expect while dining in someone's home. As we sat down and waited for our menus we gathered that the restaurant is run by a couple. The wife's domain being the kitchen and the husband's being the front of the house. Since we were among the first to arrive that night we got our menus quickly and were able to put in our order early. It must be noted that an evening at Khun Pic's is not your quick and dirty, in and out in 1 hour dining experience. Because there is only one cook and one waiter, the service takes a little longer and so does the food. That being said the service (in our experience) was warm, friendly, and thoughtful and the food--phenomenal. It. is. worth it. Trust me. Plus if you're with someone you like (and I hope you are!) you get to spend quality time together. Win-win. Having lived in Thailand, I crave authentic and fresh Thai flavors, which are often missing from Thai food here in the states. At Khun Pic's you can expect freshness (everything is made to order) as well as the authentic balance of flavors (sweet, salty, sour, spicy) characteristic of Thai cuisine. We ordered the fresh spring rolls with curry peanut sauce, som tam (green papaya salad), and the fried catfish with chili garlic sauce. Everything was bursting with flavor and prepared with care. Absolutely the best Thai Food ever. I've been here more the 20 times and have yet to have anything less than amazing. Kuhn Pic's is a two person restaurant run by John and Mary( he takes the orders, busses the tables etc she makes every dish with love by hand). This is slow food at it's best. As such it's not somewhere that you go when you have a time crunch (on the weekend you need to have at least 2 hours) and make sure you're in good company. It's especially wonderful on summer nights when they allow you to sit in the courtyard- surrounded with roses, figs and an apple tree. Inside it looks like a cross between a traditional Thai restaurant and your grandmas old Victorian house. The food is sublime. And I've tried most of it so here's a rundown of my personal favorites: Salad Rolls with Spicy Peanut Sauce: totally amazing with unexpected ingredients (apples, mint and perfectly fried tofu). Don't even get me started on the peanut sauce- best I've ever had. Fried Catfish with Chile Garlic Sauce (not sure if that's the name): It's not on the menu and not always available but it's the best catfish available anywhere. She uses Rice Flour for the breading so it's thin and perfectly crispy. The sauce is so tasty and has a ton of Thai basil. Any of her curries...so amazing. read more

The wonderful family that runs the place comprises of a husband-wife duo, and they are the only people running the place, so service is on the slower side, but they make you well aware of this fact before you are seated, so settle in and chat with people while you're waiting for the food. What a lovely surprise! Originally planned to grab something from the Belmont carts, but the exterior of Kuhn Pics beautiful garden caught my eye. The inside of the "restaurant" is actually the interior of an historic craftsman home (and I love craftsmans) so the seating is in very close quarters but it feels so cozy and intimate. I've eaten a lot of Thai food in my travels across the country and I fell in love with the flavors of everything I had!
