We've enjoyed Kiahuna Sunrise Cafe, so we were excited to return during the soft opening of their new dinner service, After Sunrise. The biggest attraction may be the setting itself. The restaurant is located in the beautiful Kiahuna Plantation Gardens, one of the most memorable dining locations on Kauai. The orchids, cactus gardens, and tropical landscaping create a peaceful atmosphere that is especially magical in the evening. Many longtime visitors will be happy to see this beautiful property once again serving dinner. The food was excellent. The Ahi Cucumber Boat was fresh, creative, and delicious. The Jalapeño Poppers were a hit, and both the Mango-cado Salad and Crab Cakes were flavorful and well prepared. The Island BBQ Ribs were tender, delicious, and served with a fantastic sauce. The service was equally impressive. Our waiter was charming and attentive, the manager was welcoming, and the couple overseeing the restaurant made us feel genuinely appreciated. The chef deserves special recognition for delivering such a thoughtful menu and executing it so well during the restaurant's opening week. For a team only a few nights into dinner service, everything felt remarkably polished. We are thrilled to see dinner return to this beautiful garden setting and look forward to many future visits for breakfast, lunch, and now dinner as well. read more

Believe the bad reviews. Avoid. Sad to say. I love this setting and wanted it to be great. Food was not good. What they had of it. Most items not available. And when manager /owner? Came to apologize it was so lame it was laughable. "It's a small island. We have troubles stocking things". THEY HAD NO RICE? For the loco moco. Better to say nothing than something so ridiculous Service ok but not great. Server tried. Never got more water. Wrong drinks Outside new metal roof covered area was too hot. No fans. The turtles on the beach were faster than service here. After an hour wait we were told they hadn't started cooking our food yet. The service team was pleasant and comped us our coffees and a pastry but I can't recommend going as we never received our food. Atmosphere was pleasant read more

We heard there was a new breakfast spot on the south side so we wanted to try it out. When I looked it up on Yelp it had lots of one start reviews but we decided to give it a shot anyway bc we wanted to experience it for ourselves. The entrance was a bit confusing, we walked through the restaurant to get to the hostess. We waited 15 mins for a table which was not a problem at all. While we waited, we checked out the menu and decided on a few dishes. When we got seated, we told our server what we decided to get, and she said sorry we're out. Ok, one thing is out. No big deal. So I asked what else is unavailable, and she continued to list 6-7 different dishes that were out. WOW. Ok. We settled on our third choice dish as well as a side salad which was pictured in the menu. Although it's a side, we were advised they couldn't make it as a side dish separately. So we just left it at that. As we were waiting, we noticed lipstick on our water glass. Neither of us had lipstick on. In that moment, we decided to go somewhere else. Our server was sweet and did the best she could with what she had. It wasn't her fault. We were honestly excited to have another brunch option on the south side, but this experience fell short in more ways than one. read more

The good news: The food is absolutely fantastic. We had the kalua pork benedict, Hawaiian roll french toast, and breakfast burrito, and everything was outstanding. The not-so-good news: Most of the space is closed off, and they seem to be short-staffed, so you may have to wait 30+ minutes for a table. Nice location on the Kiahuna Plantation, but the breakfast before was disappointing. The sweet roll French toast looked great, but was very chewy and dry. The mango-lilikoi smoothie was excellent. The papaya with yogurt, fruit and granola had minimal fruit and only a few sprinkles of oatmeal. The hot chocolate was served in a paper cup. read more

Cafe onsite at Kiahuna Plantation at Outrigger Absolutely delicious breakfast. Delicious. They have full coffee options (latte, cappuccino, etc) tea, chai, hot chocolate. Juice. Pancakes. Traditional breakfast. Spam. Portuguese sausage. Bacon. Three Benedict options. Breakfast burritos. Paniolo. A couple of options I am not recalling. Everything was fresh. The service was fabulous. The owner or restaurant manager was involved and very friendly. Inside they had these massive brownies. I wanted one but did not grab one. They had a couple of other Breakfast goodies as well. I think they may serve other meals as well but I only had brekky here. Only lanai seating and a pretty view (that I was aware). read more

Fantastic! So sorry for the previous reviews ; all because of their soft opening and people were impatient of waiting- they are a brand new establishment and doing a fantastic job! Highly recommend it. Their kids menu great options, their french toast to die for and then I got their papaya sunrise - so yummy. Service was friendly. Still waited because they are busy, they wouldnt be busy if they werent good. So dont listen to the reviews. Come, even if you are staying on the plantation or not. A great spot to try while on the island. Coffee (got their iced ube; so good), pastries and wonderful breakfast items. Thank you for making our families morning. read more

I would give this place a 10 star if I could!! The food was AMAZING! Idk how this place got bad reviews. Maybe they were understaffed that day. If I ever come back to Kauai I am DEFINITELY making the drive here. We drove over an hour and it was well worth it! It's been hard for us to find good food on this island. read more

Long wait as expected since Sunrise Cafe is surrounded by vacation rentals and there aren't that many tables. That was okay But the food and service was not. I was excited about trying out this new restaurant But disappointed that my experience was bad. I didn't expect that. long waits all around ........ for our orders to be taken and to receive our meals. Service was disjointed. Some in our group received theirs way ahead of others. Three of us ordered pancakes. They were delivered but no syrup or butter. Had a long wait for them. The killer was the pancakes were cold. Not just that but they were heavy, dense and are. Like they had been sitting out in room temperature for hours. The opposite of fluffy The picture of the pancakes on the menu showed them with a blueberries, strawberries and pineapple in the center covered with whip cream. Mine had a few measly blueberries only. The pancakes were like eating bricks. Our waitress insisted they were fresh off the griddle. it wasn't possible for them to be this cold if that were true. They obviously sat somewhere too long and forgotten about. Blah coffee and we were never offered A refresh of more coffee. Four people at a nearby table told their server they were going to leave because they waited too long. We were compensated for ONE order of stale, cold pancakes even though 3 of us were served them. It's all too bad because the setting is very nice and Poipu needs more spots for breakfast. We won't be back. read more

I had high hopes since I love the area where this cafe opened but the front and back of house were not in sync and it showed in both service and food. Don't want to assume it's always like this but a bit of chaos for sure on our visit there for breakfast around 8:30 . The hostess was great and coffees delicious. First visit: Breakfast: Wow! This place is great! Second visit: Breakfast: They still don't have chicken fried steak? Third visit: Brunch: I didn't ask about the elusive chicken fried steak. I also was served my sunny side eggs undercooked. I'd prefer not to have salmonella so I didn't eat them. Also had to find a staff member to get my check. Silly me, I should've known they were all inside sitting and chatting with each other. The ambiance is good but the service has a long way to go. We love eating here as we stay nearby when on Kauai. The setting is AMAZING (large water garden with orchids) and it's just a perfect and peaceful sun-rise location for breakfast, which is a rare treat on Kauai! Good coffee and some unique and delicious items (eggs Benedict) on the menu. read more

This is the first place where I felt unwelcome. We waited more than five minutes to be acknowledged to put our name on the list for a table, finally stopping someone to ask if we were in the right place. When we got seated, we waited 15 minutes without acknowledgment from anyone...weren't even asked for our drink order, so we left. But after a 10 minute wait to be acknowledged at the hostess desk and then another 10 minute wait to be seated we were ignored by every server person who walked by us. We waited at least another 10 or 15 minutes before we got up and left. It was disappointing because the location is beautiful and they appear to have a nice menu, but when a business is so uninterested in taking care of their patrons I don't feel the need to spend my money there. read more

We went during the soft opening 2nd weekend. Our waiter/server Jenny was super sweet. The on-site manager was there helping. Food came out fast. It tasted amazing. Had the seafood Benedict and sweet crepe. Would come again. The bakery foods come from orlys they were tasty. read more

We are locals who came to the restaurant to try it out for the first time. We actually got up and left because we'd never got served after waiting for a bit. The restaurant was busy, and most people did not have food which was not a good sign. We were never given a menu, water, or anything else, so we left and went to another restaurant. We were guests at Kiahuna Plantation and excited to find a new place to try out for breakfast. Our experience was very disappointing. We arrived and asked if we could place a to-go order. They said it may take a while- they said 20-30 minutes. It was obvious they were pretty new, all the employees seemed confused on how to do things. Our order took an hour and were met with many excuses and rude employees. The food was mediocre at best. Employees didn't know what was on the menu- we had to point to each item. Crepes were too sugary and there were rubbery. Breakfast burrito tortilla was dry. Açaí was on the menu but they said they didn't have it. Food descriptions on menu weren't great. The "fresh fuel" healthy option needed salt and the English muffin was totally soggy. This place could've been great and we had high hopes, but our order cost over $100 and wasn't even close to worth it, wish they would've been apologetic and/or offered a discount for our 60+ minute wait for the order. Denny's or fast food would have been better- and cheaper. So disappointing. read more

We really wanted to like this new cafe. But were every disappointed. Way overpriced and poor quality food. Both of our meals were served cold. Poached eggs were barley even cooked. One of us ordered a breakfast burrito w/ veggies which menu said would come with refried beans--there were no beans. Not hot, over-cooked eggs on one end, potatoes on the other. The chipotle-smoked salsa, tasted like chemicals and left a lingering terrible taste in the mouth. Egg dishes do not come with potatoes or any side that any normal breakfast cafe offers. You have to pay extra if you want any potatoes, or rice on already overpriced dish. Coffee was weak, not hot and overpriced. Too bad, as setting is beautiful. read more

Kiahuna Sunrise Cafe location and ambiance is amazing. It has one of the most elaborate garden settings for a mainstream restaurant that I have ever seen; running water, multi-level ponds, and beautiful vegetation everywhere. The seating is comfortable and spread out sufficiently to enjoy good conversation with everyone at the table. As a newly opened restaurant, the entry-way can be a little bit confusing (walkway is integrated into the garden) but nothing a few signage tweaks can't fix. I always rate food relative to the price and style of restaurant. I've eaten breakfast here a couple times and it's all been high quality, tasty food with a bit of a southern flare. The drip coffee (for true coffee drinkers) is much higher quality than the average for a restaurant (highly recommended). Location is best enjoyed on a morning where the very unique garden setting can be fully appreciated. read more

Extremely disappointing and frustrating breakfast experience. We waited 45 minutes just to be served cold food -- and it wasn't even the correct order. After pointing out the mistake, we had to sit there another 10-15 minutes while watching tables that came in after us get served before we did. Completely unacceptable. It honestly felt like we were treated differently because we're locals, which is ironic because locals are the ones who bring repeat business and referrals. Instead, we were made to feel like an afterthought. My partner works in the tourism industry and will absolutely not be recommending this place to visitors -- or anyone else. The coffee was cold, the food quality was poor, and the service was careless from start to finish. There was zero sense of urgency or accountability. We ate breakfast at this little gem several times during our stay in Poipu and hope to try it again during future visits. They are going through growing pains, having been just recently opened, so kept that in mind when slight glitches happened. Especially enjoyed the Crab Benedict. The ambiance is special, with outdoor seating near an orchid garden and fish pond. At the time, they only had one chef and so the wait for food was slow. Hopefully they will hire a sous chef to help speed things along. but as our server explained, it is a challenge to find staff. There are also plans to open for dinner.
