My regular stylist left the biz and then Headlines closed down, so I decided to give Kibana a try. Big mistake. I asked for a bang trim and a simple trim for my long layers. Pretty basic, right? Well, I got a completely different bang cut that doesn't go with my bone structure. I have a high forehead, but she made my bangs start at the middle of my scalp. So now whenever I wear them down, I straight up look like I have a seven-head. In addition, the bangs are too short and super uneven, which just adds insult to injury. Finally, I think she completely messed up my layers, which rounds this out to a comically terrible haircut. I feel like it's gonna take months to rectify this at a better salon...In the meantime, I'm gonna keep on popping biotin pills I guess, until the hair grows out. Oh, and on top of all of that, I'm pretty sure she didn't use heat protectant... I do feel bad about leaving this review since the people I worked with were nice (hence the 2-stars vs. 1-star). But if I have to live with this cut, then they should have to live with this less-than-stellar feedback. In summary, I would highly recommend going elsewhere, but if you have to go here in a pinch, be VERY clear about your expectations and don't be afraid to interrupt or inquire if you don't things are going in accordance with what you want. read more

I booked a 10am haircut with Tiffany the night before. I arrived right on time to a closed shop. This is actually the second time this happened to me so shame on me for going back. I called the number and the person who answered (owner) said Tiffany was going to be there in 2 minutes, she was parking her car. About 10 minutes in the shampoo woman came and let me in. She asked if I wanted to get shampooed. I said no unless I knew Tiffany, the stylist, was coming. She called the stylist who said she was almost there. I got shampooed. Tiffany arrived. Around the same time another woman arrived who said she also had a 10am with Tiffany. Tiffany saw in the book I had the 10am and the other woman had an 11. The other woman said the person who booked her appointment told her she had a 10. Neither one of us could wait. Tiffany took the other person, even though I actually had the 10am appointment and had arrived first. Tiffany offered to dry my hair but I was so annoyed I had to walk out of there with wet hair and no haircut. Never again with this place. read more

Overall the Service is standard or slightly above but not worth the cost. I use this place as a last minute, last resort back up to my back up. I've been here a few times and have yet to have a low quality experience but am always charged over the market rate. However, pricing changes often and is not made clear. In six months I was changed 3 different amounts for same exact service. This makes loyalty very hard to stomach when you do not feel valid or respected as a consumer. In salon Products are pushed every visit from stylist to front desk. Regardless of how many times I've declined, I've been asked to buy more and more. 1-2x is understandable and just the workers doing their job but more than that has reached a level of uncomfortable. Wait time is never made clear nor is it consistent so that makes it hard to plan around. I've waited anywhere from 10-40 mins for my appointment to begin (including the wash bowl). Only pros in my mind are general cleanliness, variety of services rendered and central location for the area (downtown silver spring). Oh, and the shampoos. The women who usually do them (sisters I believe) are very thorough. But, do I recommended? No. Go elsewhere and save yourself money and headaches. read more

I have gone back and forth about sharing my experience. I liked the employees (I only really saw two- Tiffany (who did my hair) and one other woman who washed it. After a very brief description of what I wanted, Tiffany began to go to town and answered her ringing cellphone several times while continuing to cut. At one point she had her cell phone in one hand and kept cutting with the other. It turned out way shorter than I had hoped and, unprompted, she even shaved some off the back at the bottom of my neck. Also I guess they don't automatically style there, so she blow-dried and sent me on my way. It was all very comedically tragic. read more

I never write reviews but this is literally the worst hair salon I've ever been to. I went it for a straight womens hair cut (all one length). Anna maybe made six cuts all the way around my head and then started to blow dry. $65 for 15 minutes? Absurd. Additionally the hair cut was horrid. See pictures. All one length? What a joke. I'm new in Silver Spring, so I was searching online for a while to find a good hair salon. Finally i decided to go with Kibana, because i saw some good reviews about it here. I got an appointment the same day with Demian. Gotta say I'm a total psycho when it comes to my hair and getting a haircut is my ultimate nightmare. I have very long thick hair and not everybody can work with them. So i was very nervous when i got there. But the nice and cozy atmosphere of the salon made me relax pretty soon and the lady who washed my hair was very friendly and talkative. So we got to the hardest part, the haircut...I explained to Demian what i wanted..He listened to me carefully and then showed me exactly what he was going to do..I immediately trusted him, because he really seemed to know what he was talking about..He was so nice ,talkative and kind..he really liked working with my hair, and didn't complain about the length so i really enjoyed the whole process. The result in the end...OH MY GOD!!! Perfect, just what i wanted!! I was so happy and relieved! It was one of my best( If not the best) experiences I've had at a hairdresser. I have never had such an awful experience at a spa before! My sister paid for me to go for my birthday i came out worse then when i went in. They do not offer you a cup of water and when i asked they sent me to the store across the street to purchase one. They have false advertising and don't offer all the services as well as wayyyyy over priced! Will not return to this salon for a facial. Cons: -Overpriced -Employees eating in the pedicure area (as big as this place is I would think they would have a break room to eat in) -the bed that I laid on was covered with towels and uncomfortable -Loud (as I was getting my deep cleanse facial and glycolic peel I could hear the staff talking loudly. It would be great for the staff to put on soothing music to zone out what is happening outside the facial/massage room). -My esthetician was Angelica. She did not introduce herself and burnt my skin with her suggested glycolic peel. I have had glycolic peels before and expected some peeling but I did not expect my skin to become hyperpigmented in areas that it was not before. I ALWAYS wear sunblock and actually reapply every 2 hours. I have also never been sunburned. So this hyperpigmentation was directly linked to the glycolic peel. This was my second visit to Kibana for a brazillian. And I originally asked for Jae, who had done an okay job before, but ended up getting Angelique because i got held up the day before and had to reschedule. Angelique seemed nice enough and the service seemed to go well. But the next day when looking up close I realized all the hair she missed... And it seemed the girls at the front knew something I didn't cause they said to her "take your time"and asking me how was the service nervously. As if expecting bad news. It pisses me off that they would have someone doing services like that with someone who is so so. Like, it's my lady parts area. Everything else at kibana gets top notch people, why not this?!?! Angelique has been waxing for 28 yrs, she says, ... I don't know if she's ever been good for anyone else but its so bad she missed so much hair and no short stubble or short pieces in between things like on my front long hairs... she did a sh*t job, period. I will be going back if Kibana agrees to comp my next visit. Got my nails DID :-) & I even squeezed in a new hair cut....best experience ever. The staff was extremely nice & made sure that everyone there was being taken care of. When I thought someone forgot one thing, they showed me that in fact they did NOT forget at all & made it even better!....Can't share the secret but please believe that it was WORTH the wait. I went here in January for the first time to fix a crappy haircut i received elsewhere. The Tiffany did a FABULOUS job and fixed my hair. It lays great and even without styling, it looks good enough to go out in public if i just don't have the time. The wash station is AWESOME and the girls who wash your hair give excellent massages. Truly THE best wash i've ever had! :) I have also gotten my nails done there regularly. The polish seems to wear off quickly, but it could be me (i get the Gel polish). The staff is always friendly and the atmosphere is relaxing. I haven't tried anything else yet, but probably will try the waxing once the summer comes around. Stay tuned! ;) read more

Kibana is in a gorgeous space, no doubt about it. It suggests relaxation from the first moment. I love the place in general, and the location. The prices are a bit high, though in sync with the level of service. I can't complain a bit about the services. My hair always looks great, the eyebrow wax is perfect every time. At $20 the eyebrow wax is still reasonable given the quality. I can highly recommend, my only reservation when recommending to friends is the price. read more

I went for a bikini wax (TMI?) and a pedicure. Not a bikini wax expert by any means, I still thought the experience was as pleasant as it can possibly be...I mean, it's a strange woman ripping out hair around a *sensitive* area with hot wax, so how pleasant is that, in general? Anyway, it was very fast, almost too fast for there to be much pain, and as far as I could tell, it seemed to be a pretty good job. It was $30...and while paying $30 for under 10 minutes of work at first seemed a little much, I then thought about what that poor woman has to do all day. Good grief, who decides they want to be a waxer--I would have to be on the verge of homeless! But I digress. The pedicure was done by Ken (?), and he was very nice. He offered me something to drink, which I didn't want, and he was very nice and professional. My toes looked great, and two and a half weeks later, they aren't even chipped (of course they will be now that I've said that). By the end, I was the only person left in the pedicure room, and he encouraged me to stay and take advantage of the cable TV, since I told him I don't have cable at home. That was $30, too. Overall, very nice experience. It's a really nice space, and they sell all sorts of nice salon hair products and things. I would go back, but probably not very often, as I am a total cheapskate and only pampered myself because I was going on vacation. read more

Service is excellent here. I called and made an appointment for the same day. From the second I showed up, I was offered tea, water and a place to relax. The owner Tiffany is a true professional. Ask for her! She assessed my hair color and gave me a beautiful new look. Everyone was very friendly and if you go, ask for the ginger tea--it's great! The shampoo assistant gave me a fantastic neck and scalp massage for at least 5 minutes! The customers seemed to be familiar with the staff, so they definitely have a dedicated and happy following. The only reason why it wasn't 5 stars was the price. I paid $80 for hair color. However, if you're trying out a new look don't want to gamble with any old salon (be it hair color or hair cut) I would try this place out. I had a crick that turned into extreme pain in my back neck and shoulders. I called ahead made an appointment Saturday 7/6/13. They Upsaled/suggested a Swedish massage for my situation. It didn't matter how much it was I just needed relief. $45 for 30 min. Angelique was my therapist she went in and I felt so much better. I was comfortable the room was clean. The whole salon was beautiful. I definitely will be back that $45 was nothing compared to a lot of other places. I still have a little pain in my back I honestly didn't expect to be healed, I probably should've done the hour for $80 time wasn't on my side, but I'm planning to go back today for a follow up. Had a very lovely pedicure in a very clean place, nice people, etc. but without drying fans or even the nail drying spray I smudged my nails. Came back shortly and they fixed it but I had to stick around awhile waiting for my nails to dry only to smudge it again in the way home. Partly my fault for not great shoes but adding some drying fans or even just the spray would really help cut down on wait time and maybe even accidents. Pedicure was $40 without tip. This review is for RAMON at Kibana Salon - he is a Hair EXPERT! I started going to him about two years ago for hair color, which was listed as his specialty in the salon's website. Let me tell you, it is. Ramon is amazing at color. He takes his time to figure out exactly what you want, is friendly and fun to chat with, and he is SO passionate about hair. He truly loves his clients and what he does. I use the word clients, because people keep going back to him. I decided to go back to my natural hair color awhile back, having decided it wasn't so bad (nice, even) and Ramon helped with a smooth transition as my natural color replaced the salon created color. When a few grays started popping up (shhh, that stays between you and me), Ramon told me just to pluck them rather than charging me to color over them. Now that I am au naturelle, I go to Ramon to cut and style my hair, which he does not claim as his expertise, but I am so happy with the cut that he gives me, even now living in Tysons Corner, I will make the trip into Silver Spring and deal with parking in downtown to go see him. I get so many complements on my hair when he cuts it, and frequently give out Ramon's name to women looking for a good stylist. Added perks are that the two ladies who wash your hair give incredible scalp massages - I commonly ask them to go a little longer because they do such a good job, and I tip them well as a thank you (have to remember to take care of them too!). They also have really good ginger tea, so I would take them up on it when they offer it. Hopefully you can see why I give Ramon at Kibana Salon a 5-star rating. If you are considering a new look and/or stylist, go give Ramon a try. I'm confident you will come away very pleased. Tiffany gives the best hair cuts. There is simply no other way to put it. I have gone to many stylists in major cities (mostly NYC and Chicago) as well as small towns in PA. For short or long hair, Tiffany is better than all the rest. The compliments I receive after a hair cut from Tiffany range from the normal "did you do something different? you look great!" and "your hair looks amazing!" to "your hair is so sexy!". She is so skilled that even a month after my cut it still looks great. I cannot recommend her enough. Given her talent I always walk out of there feeling like I totally ripped them off. Her cuts cost about average for a salon; given her expertise she should be in the high range. read more

I've had quite a few services here from time to time, and overall I'm pretty happy with my experiences. I only go occasionally for a bit of pampering, since most of the services rendered are on the expensive side. The salon space is nice and open, modern, and clean. I've always been offered tea or water while I've waited, and there is usually some candy and/or pastries out as well. Hair: My hair is trashed. I have fairly dry & coarse hair, and on top of that, I do a lot of bad things to it. I was originally planning on the Japanese Straightening, but my hair was too damaged for that. I was recommended a Keratin Treatment (similar to a Brazilian Keratin Treatment), which doesn't last as long (allegedly 3-4 months), but it's cheaper and restores health to hair. I was skeptical, but desperate, so I got it done. This was by far the most I've ever spent on my hair, but let me tell you, in all my years it has never looked or felt better, and the results lasted an astonishing 7 months! Tiffany (the owner) is a miracle worker. I would do this again and again if it were significantly cheaper. Facial: I went in for a simple facial, nothing fancy. Allie (I think? I'm horrible with names) was really nice and gentle. The extractions hurt a bit, but I don't expect any less. My skin felt really nice afterward. I don't have problem skin, so this was more of a pampering than an "omg my skin needs help" visit. Massage: The first time I went in, I asked for the aromatherapy massage, but for some reason or another, I did not get it. The massage wasn't too bad, and the masseuse, Maria, paid attention to my trouble spots. The massage rooms are quiet, dim, and relaxing, with the typical new age music playing softly in the background. On my second visit, I had some serious shoulder issues going on (I carry all my stress in my shoulders), and she gave them a really deep workout. It hurt, but in a way that should. Nails: I got my nails done a few times with either acrylic or gel, and the techicians were really nice and friendly. However, I don't think they were any better at doing my nails than at any of the other 2094 nail salons in Silver Spring, so it is probably not worth the extra cost. Maybe as a nice luxury, I'd consider getting a regular manicure or pedicure in conjunction with another service like a massage or facial. All and all, a nice spa/salon, but a bit on the expensive side. read more

I really enjoyed my experience here. Got a hair cut & color by Demian. He used the new dyes with no ammonia that are gentler on your hair and don't smell. I left there with an awesome hair cut (which was all his idea) and a wonderful hair color. However, I left off a star because 2 weeks later, the color has all washed out and faded. My roots are the only part that still have some washed out color in it, but the rest of my hair that had been previously dyed is back to the color it was before I went to Kibana. I'm thoroughly disappointed by it. So don't get me wrong, I had a great time at Kibana, and left extremely happy. But if you want hair color that lasts (and I had gone darker, and am now much lighter since its washed out) then either ask for a different kind of hair dye, or go elsewhere. I usually go down the street to Ulta but as of late their service had gone down the hill so i decided to give Kibana a try. I went in for a manicure, pedicure and a hair appointment today and let me tell ya from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave you will be in a relaxed frame of mind. Ranging from the awesome atmosphere to the detailed and customer care oriented service kibana is truly a blessing. I loved that KIM my nail tech was so attentive to my hands and toes and not even once did she hurt my toes while doing my pedicure. She was sweet and giggled with me (I'm very ticklish). She also gave me a full acrylic set on my hands and guess what y'all!!! NO AIR BUBBLES it was filed and done perfectly. Next up, hair. DONNA did my hair and let me tell ya (yes, again) ladies with naturally curly/wavy hair she is a saint!!! My hair is VERY VERY thick and has loose curls and I have never left a salon without it turning into a ball of fluff within 30 min, but today it was silly smooth and straight. I loved it. I'm not the only one to love her and appreciate her talents...with no exceptions, all of my friends I recommended her to are all happily coming back. She listens to what you want and does it to perfection. But, make no haste, let her advice you first -then consider your options...you won't go wrong taking her advise... she is on top of her game and on all the fashion trends! Kibana is heavenly. It is a very calm and attractive environment and all the people who work there are gorgeous and SO nice. The first time I came, Tiffany saved my hair from a bleach-induced damage nightmare (happened at an out-of-state salon). I was asking her about getting a Brazilian Blowout Split End Treatment, but Tiffany told me the treatment, although $$$$ for her, would be too hard on my fried hair and recommended some *excellent* products for me instead. By using the recommended Kerastase products religiously (along with the Aphogee 2-step protein treatment from Sally's) I was able to get my hair back into better condition than it was pre-bleach. (It also started growing CRAZY fast!) When it was time for another cut and color I went back to Tiffany. She was very honest with me about what was possible and ended up doing an absolutely beautiful job with what I asked for. I should add that Tiffany is an incredibly inspiring, generous and kind person--not to mention that she looks AT LEAST 20 years younger than her real age, and not because of crazy Botoxing or anything either. You'll have to ask her her secrets. Overall, the salon experience was a joy: the shampoo girl gives THE BEST massages; Kibana sells and uses excellent products from Skinceuticals to Kerastase to Bumble, Shu Uemura, Moroccanoil and Becca, so it really is like a mini-Space NK in there; the salon space is beautiful, and location is great in the heart of Silver Spring; everyone is really nice and the environment is extremely low-key and comfortable...what more could you ask for? It's not super cheap, but if you want a treat and great results, come here. I plan to come back for other things beyond hair because they inspire a lot of trust in their service. read more

I knew when I walked in the door that this was a serious salon - I was impressed with the design and layout of the place, so light and open. The product display is very tempting, top of the line, including my favorites, like Shu Uemura, Bumble and Becca. I had color and a cut with Demian and a mani-pedi with J. Starting at the color consultation, across a beautiful stainless steel table-through one of the best head, neck and shoulder massages I have ever had each time at the shampoo bowl-to a perfect haircut-it was just a divine experience. the ginger tea was delicious. My hair is so shiny and bouncy a day later, even after sleeping on it. J. and Demian convinced me to try some nail art- which I have never done before and I got a subtle pink paisley print that just looks so fresh and spring forward. I have been coming to this salon for years. I like the owner a great deal. She is a good stylist and very professional. My color has always turned out well, this may be in part because the place has very good natural lighting. It is likely that colorists can more accurately figure out the color that is already in my hair because of the lighting. Also, the women who work in the shampoo station give EXCELLENT neck and shoulder massages! I do NOT recommend getting a manicure at this salon. On the day that I got a manicure, I left with barely any fingernails. I could have achieved the look on my own with a pair of nail clippers. read more

Massage with Angelica only: Angelica is amazing. I have suffered from migraines for 8 years now. They are typically at their worst in the spring. I was having a particularly bad spring this year with 5-6 migraines per week (almost every day). I scheduled a massage with Angelica on a whim during a particularly bad week and the results were amazing. I have been getting a massage from her once/week since and am now down to one headache per week on average which is best I have had in years. Angelica is very polite, her room is clean, and she is extremely considerate of her clients and dedicated to her job. She is constantly asking for updates on my migraines and researching new techniques to use in our massages. I will continue to see Angelica and 100% recommend her. read more

Good stylists, but absolutely terrible customer service. I made an appointment last week for a haircut and arrived on time. My stylist was obviously running late, but the receptionist made no mention of it -- she just directed me to go sit in the back. I sat there for 40 minutes and was ignored. I finally got up and told the receptionist that I couldn't wait any longer and left. The manager left me a voicemail later that day, but when I called back to speak with her, I was told that she was busy and would call me shortly. That was 3 days ago. This is not how you treat your clients. If I had been initially informed of the long delay and given the choice of rescheduling (or at least been offered an apology or glass of water while I waited for so long) I would have felt differently, but after this experience, I won't be returning to Kibana. read more

WORST massage experience ever. When I arrived to the Spa I was greeted by an elderly woman. She seems nice but I was concern since I requested a deep tissue massage. When we entered the room, she asked me to keep my boxer on for her comfort. Her massage skills were mediocre at best. I don't believe she ever had any type of professional training .
