Conveyor belt sushi? Why not? Tucked away inside the Queens Center Mall is Kido Sushi, which is located downstairs in the food court. Now being such a HUGE fan of all things sushi I decided to check this place out. On this particular day they were having a happy hour special and all plates (any color) were $2. It is decent sushi and you might have a couple of options to choose from, including salad plates. The Queens Center Mall food court is absolutely a nightmare, especially on a Saturday. It also happens to be the very first day that the weather was good and the sun was out, so the mall was teeming with people from all walks of life. I was there to see what was on sale, and after doing the "rounds" I got hungry and headed to the food court!! As usual it was packed and all the seats were taken so I headed up the escalator to go home, when I noticed this Sushi place tucked between 2 escalators with a conveyor belt in the middle and a few vacant seats, that's all I need after a day of shopping. I went ahead and ordered the Chicken Udon, it was hot & delicious, then picked up a few Sushi from the conveyor belt. California Roll on an yellow plate (4.00) and Philadelphia roll also on a yellow plate 4.00 You can keep tab on your bill with the color of the plate you pick. It's queens. I've had better sushi in Manhattan at a cheaper cost. Service was meh. The workers there don't know English. I was having a hard time ordering sushi from the menu because they don't understand what I want! At the very least they should know the names of the basic sushi and rolls. The fish wasn't bad, but it was over priced for the quality and quantity. I kept seeing the same plates of rolls going around the conveyor belt, I was afraid to pick them up (the tuna in tuna rolls was dark purple almost to the point of BLACK) There were not enough varieties on the belt, a lot of empty spaces, or, old stuff, rotating. This place used to be awesome up until the sushi size kept shrinking; like seriously the size of the rolls are an insult compared to how they once used to be. The variety on the conveyer belt has become more limited, oh and there's more: the prices have gone up for no reason since the quality of the food here has lacked tremendously. Pretty decent place with reasonable price overall. It's my first time here and I'll definitely be back again. The wide selection of sushi might not be comparable to the other top Japanese places, but what else could you be asking for fresh sushi plates vary from $2 to $6 each. I spent about $45 dollars on my first visit with two other of my friends and we did enjoy our first experience. On the other hand, the service was great too. I sometimes consider myself a pain in the neck when comes to asking for service from restaurant staffs. This place reminds me of a sushi spot I used to go to in London called "Go Sushi" more than ten years ago. It had the same colored plate system going on which took a lot of guess work away from the patrons and allowed you to eat right away instead of waiting to give someone your order. This way of eating can get pricey depending on how hungry and grabby you are which will greatly affect your final tab. The selection of food is pretty good and they have a lot of things going on the belt that you might not normally pick if you did not have it staring you in the face each time it makes a pass. When I saw conveyor belt sushi in the food court of Queens Center Mall, I had to do a double take. I tried it more out of curiosity then anything else. I've never picked random plates off a moving conveyor belt, and it looked like fun. Keep an eye on the color of the plates you choose, so you can keep tabs on your bill. Portions were decent sized for the prices, although I can see how it can all start adding up very quickly. We tried the tuna sushi, whole baby squid, squid salad and two different specialty rolls. It's hard to adequately describe the quality of the sushi. It's definitely better than the packaged varieties you find in the coolers of various delis. But, the majority of their offerings aren't quite as good as you'd find at your neighborhood Japanese restaurant. Although, some do come pretty close. Overall, everything we tried was definitely better than expected. They offer bento boxes and a full menu as well if the conveyor belt doesn't do it for you. Service was speedy. No sooner had I picked a plate off the belt that a waitress came by to clear away the corresponding cover. I really like the wasabi they offer, it had a stronger kick than I expected. This is a conveyor belt sushi concept, which is pretty awesome and first time I ate sushi from this type of set up. I arrived 15 minutes before the happy hour special began ($2 sushi) and I was not sure what they would charge me, but at that point I was very hungry and didn't care. It was nearly EMPTY. The food tasted pretty fresh, nothing was mushy and they kept putting things out. Also, the plates have sensors so if a lot of time lapses the plates sensor goes off and the sushi is thrown out (according to the waitress). The food was delicious and the whole concept of the conveyor belt sushi is great. The location of this place kinda sucks though, it is located right by the escalators and play pen (screaming kids SUCK). I would not down rate it because of this though, kinda uncontrollable for the business. I would have given this place a 5, however, the customer service is terrible!! I asked my waitress a question and she responded very rude and snappy. Then my friend was texting and she asking him if he wanted another drink, he shook his head although maintained focus on his cellphone. The place is decent. Their fish quality isnt as bad as I thought it'd be. It's actually ALOT better than Sushi Island on queens blvd. For two people, it was about $40, but we also ate alot. I came here with my family because my mom was really entertained by the revolving sushi when we walked by. Basically, there's plates of sushi, salads, and desert on this revolving table that goes around in a circle. If we like something, we can take it and eat. Each plate prices varies. White plates are $2, green plates are $3, light orange plates are $4, blue plates are $5, and dark orange plates are $6. They also have a happy hour special after 7 PM. It's $2 for all plates. The food was not fresh and mediocre. There's not much to select from, and it's very pricey. The total came up to $70 for the 4 of us. There are better sushi buffets like Sushi Village or River Restaurant that offers unlimited fresh, tasty sushi for $20 per person. The service was okay; nothing special. read more

Kido caught our eye as we decended to the typically hellish nightmare that is the foodcourt of Queens Center Mall. First it was the giant fan-shaped screens that protect its patrons from spit and debris from mischievous shoppers, then it was the conveyor belt service that can usually only be found in Japan. After scouting the food court for a seat, we ultimately decided to sit in at Kido. I love the novelty of picking your food as it passes by. Plates are removed after about two revolutions and new ones are always added. The color-coded plates correspond with their price. White dishes are $2, green are $3, blue plates are $5 I believe. If the conveyor belt doesn't produce food that you fancy, you can also order off their a la carte menu. Food quality was pretty good, much to my surprise. Service is quick too. Just be warned that soft drink refills are not free. read more

I really like the concept of having the sushis on a conveyor belt since customers can pick and choose whatever they feel like eating. However, there is little variety to choose from. Also, do not come here if you expect fresh sushi because you will be disappointed. Do not get anything raw from the conveyor belt. Get those with cooked ingredients instead. Do not get the shrimp nigiri roll either because the shrimp is not fresh and not worth the money at all. Honestly, I only came because of conveniency. I also ordered the vegetable udon. Came here on a Saturday afternoon, the place was fairly empty. There's something that feels cheap about food passing you by in a conveyor belt, like playing a carnival game that's not really fun, and feels like a waste of time and money. The squeaking sounds of the escalators, in sync with the speed of the plates moving past you, gives the place a very mechanical feel. I chose some of the sushi rolls on the belt, not sure of what I was eating. It wasn't bad though. They definitely charge more for the "theatrics" of the way food is served. I saw the umbrella awning from upstairs and my boyfriend ushered me to go downstairs to see it. We luckily came in time during happy hour, so we had $2 plate sushi. I was upset the staff were pretty rude and abrupt about where to seat us. They wanted me to sit here, but instead sit over there, and just barked at us and ushered us to sit finally at the other side of the sushi bar. That did not make me happy at all. So we ate. We had about 5 plates of sushi. The pieces which were sent out onto the belt were all the same. Nothing too expensive since they would lose out. But they only offered about 2-3 pieces on each plate. Our total was $10 flat. I checked the menu though, and figured the only way you would even get remotely full was to buy a real meal. Fortunately, the prices were so good- it was considered a steal in my book! I would probably only return here if I'm in the area. It's very middling sushi but the draw is that it's may be the only conveyor belt sushi place in the city since Yo!Sushi seems to have closed. After 7PM they start happy hour where every plate is the same price regardless of color or actual dish. I have noticed that what would normally be expensive plates would have 1 piece less or something like that during happy hour. There's more than enough customer turnover to keep the food coming out fresh but again, don't expect amazing sushi. I like how it's all set up. I won't lie .. That's the only reason I went! I'm a very loyal person I don't cheat! That goes for my food as well. The only reason why I would turn this place down is because of customer service. The waitresses don't know how to be naturally nice. Kido Sushi is a fast food Japanese sushi place that is tucked between two escalators in the Queens Center Mall in the lower level food court. There are huge round discs of white fabric that cover this area so that diners can have some sort of privacy, without people on the escalators looking down at them. The most eye-catching device is the conveyor belt, where items rolls are ferreted around and around. I spied rolls, salads and seaweed salads on this contraption. The plates are color coded with the price of $2 to $6. I sat down on a single chair counter with the conveyor belt running through the top. There were tables, but they seated up to 4 people. I had to use another chair as all my shopping bags took up lots of space. Space is tight in this little sushi island, so use some strategy if you have large packages. One lady had all her goods in a shopping cart and she parked it right next to her on the counter as she ate. I didn't have any of the conveyor belt items and stuck to a bento box chicken teriyaki for $5.99. It comes with miso soup. When the soup came, it tasted more like a watered down version. The very big, bold taste of miso was not present. When my bento box came, it was not in a bento box. It was served on a square, white plate. The roll pieces, a small scoop of rice, and chicken teriyaki were placed on the plate. The rolls didn't have too much taste. The chicken teriyaki was covered in a cloyingly sweet and too sticky teriyaki sauce. The chicken was white breast meat. I found the teriyaki chicken coating sometimes had a slimy and sticky texture. I grabbed the pickled ginger from the counter between the moving conveyor belt and I found this pickled ginger tasted very much like the Chinese version and not the Japanese ones. I liked this pickled ginger very much. It was fresh, crispy and had the right acidity and sweetness. I think I enjoyed the pickled ginger the most! If you must have sushi in the mall, you can come here and grab a bite. It is a good place to rest your feet for a little bit and watch people, and an attention-getting conveyor belt that most patrons and bystanders are curious about. 3.5 stars I had a hour wait for an Apple appt. so we wanted some sushi instead of trying something at the food court. L was reaching for one of the plates on the conveyor belt the second he sat down. I know others might come for that, but seriously it's sushi that sits around for who knows how long...If you happen to consume one that sits around for too long... You should've known better. The fish literally looks like it's melting. It was around 3pm; they have lunch specials. So I enlightened L on the benefits of getting something freshly made. 3 rolls for $10.49? Great deal... Why bother with old sushi sitting around. The selection was pretty basic... Your average sushi rolls, I think we had shrimp tempura, california, Boston, spicy Kani and 2 eel avocados. They definitely looked better than the ones sitting around and I'm pretty sure they tasted better as well. For a place at the mall, the rolls were great, I'd rather eat this than fast food. They weren't falling apart at least. Definitely better than what I've had at Tomo. I won't give 4 stars since a lot of the rolls that were on the conveyor belt really didn't look appetizing at all and the prices are a bit high for the "special" rolls. Seriously $6.50 for 3-4 pieces. If I'm gonna pay $13 for 1 roll, I want mine fresh...and not from a place at the mall. Earlier today, I ordered sushi for $2.25. I wasn't willing to pay more until I tasted the quality of the food. Unfortunately, this restaurant failed in every way, from food quality to hospitality. Allow me to give you a frame of reference. I am a female African-American/Latina mix. While I'm actually in my 30s, I do look like a college student. I'm only 5'3", which is 160cm to you metric users. First offense was the cashier. Short cropped black hair, in a striped shirt. The person looked to be in their 40s. Not only did this person address two patrons that where later in line before me, but when I inquired about what I should do, I was rudely, loudly told to 'TAKE A SEAT. TAKE ANY SEAT.' in a tone much louder than the other patrons where spoken to. The second offense was when I was served the food. I could overlook the chipped plate of the food was decent. Unfortunately, it was not. Foul, rancid tasting sushi- the meat tasted as if it had gone bad. Trying to test this theory I had unwrapped the rice and seaweed to try to taste them separately. Only then I found out that it wasn't just the meat, no. The entire sushi tasted off. Even for $2.25, this is inexcusable. The third, and by far and away the worst offense is after I took a seat, the cashier switched from their station to sitting behind me. For the 11 minutes I dined at this establishment, I felt as if I was being watched. When I completed my plate, I got up and left up the escalator to the direct right of the shop. I watched the shop as I was going up to see if my suspicions where correct. Lo and behold, after I left, the cashier took their place back at the register before I even set foot on the landing. The food is bad, the service is bad, and I was treated like a criminal. I did nothing to deserve this. So I cannot recommend this restaurant. I'm pretty sure I got sick after eating here. Both me and my son have been visiting the bathroom non-stop for an entire day after. Only the two of us are sick and compared to what everyone else ate, we found that sushi was the common denominator. My boyfriend & I used to be "regulars" when we would get some shopping done in Queens Center , however our last visit made us boycott this place for good. Let me be fair, by stating the quality of the sushi is great. Definitely fresh as you see it being prepared only a few yards away. This is what happened 9/18/12: After finishing up and paying our bill around 730PM the manager stopped us (lady with short hair) upon leaving the tented area. At first I thought she was just checking with the waitress to make sure we finalized our bill and I simply told her "oh no, we payed with card, she already swiped it, we are all set" she told us no, that the matter was something else and stood in front of us. At this point I was very confused. I've figured from visiting "Kido" more than 7 times in the past 2 months that the lady would recognize our faces. She then preceded to tell us that either my boyfriend or I (wasn't clear whom exactly) took a plate off the revolving belt, ate a piece then put it back on the belt . Mind you, this is all after we paid our bill, tipped our waitress and were leaving! At first I thought she was accusing us of taking an extra plate after paying our bill so I told my boyfriend "i don't know what shes talking about but just give the 4-6 dollars for whatever she thought that we took" and that's when the manager repeated herself of what she claimed was 'caught' on camera. Then she informed us that she already called security on us! Beyond bewildered, I said alright and preceded to wait for mall security to come. While I was waiting she kept saying "i have you on camera" and because I was falsely being accused, I said " show me your video, I want to see it" . She walked quickly towards the left side where there was a man crouched down looking into a cabinet where I can only assume where the tv showing the video camera was kept. They exchanged words in another language and only then after did the lady tell me "you can go, I have you on camera , you can go" Now I was pretty upset but I calmly told her "this is not right, you cannot go around falsely accusing someone of stealing or cross contaminating" she kept handling us in a rough manor as we left. I filed a complaint with Queens Center even followed up on it because I had atleast 8-12 of $30-40 debit purchases to this restaurant and wanted reimbursement for the last $50 I spent there.
