The first thing that came to my mind when I walked into this restaurant was, "What is that smell?" And, it was not a good smell either. I decided to go ahead and order since I was downtown, and I was told by a friend that there was a good poké place. First of all, their menu is a little confusing and hard to see. Everything was written on the glass with a chalk marker, and it was hard to make out the words with the transparent background. I went down the line and designed my bowl, and I had to wait for the employee because their setup is different compared to other poké places I've been to. Luckily, the employees are really nice. They explained the flavors of their sauces, so I could make a better choice. All of the ingredients looked super fresh and delicious, so I think the smell might be from the building itself. I was just disappointed when I got home and tasted my bowl because I didn't realize the rice was normal steamed rice. I thought they would have used sushi rice because it was poké, so that was weird. Then, I felt like the bowl kind of tasted a little bland. The sushi rice usually gives the bowl some sweetness. I felt like they needed to drown my bowl in the teriyaki sauce and spicy mayo for some flavor. Also, the parking situation is kind of weird. I wasn't sure where to park because the location is in such a small spot. I'm not sure if they have their own lot for customers or if you just have to park on the street. I decided to park across the street in the other business's parking lot, but I was afraid they might tow my car due to all of the signs. Overall, I don't see myself visiting this place again. It finally happened!! Bakersfield has a brick and mortar Poke place!! My wish has come true!! Dropped in for lunch on a Saturday soon after they had opened for business. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. I like the decor. Cool surfboards hang from the ceiling with the nice duct work. Tables with the oil barrel look is an awesome creative touch. Go to the counter and create your poke bowl! Just tell them what you want (like going to Subway or Chipotle). It is a 5 step process. 1) Pick your base. Some options are white rice, cauliflower rice, Spring mix, half & half, or brown rice. 2) Pick your protein. Salmon, Ahi Tuna, Mushrooms, Egg Salad, and Shrimp are among the choices. 3) Pick your sides. 4) Pick your toppings. 5) Pick your sauce. I highly recommend their Killer A sauce!! My creation included brown rice, cauliflower rice, salmon, ahi tuna, killer A sauce, and a bunch of sides & toppings. Everything including the fish was freshly prepared. My bowl was packed with flavorful yumminess. Also tried their Smoked Salmon Deviled Eggs and homemade Sweet Tea. Those eggs tasted fantastic, and that sweet tea may be the best tasting tea ever!! A very very filling and satisfying lunch!! Everyone in our group was happy with their poke bowls. Honestly thought that they would have lots of kinks to work out since we visited when they had only been open for business about 7 days. Was pleasantly surprised with how smoothly the operation went. Out of all the poke places in Bakersfield, this is by far the best one! Food, Atmosphere, and Service were all top notch. Atmosphere - very clean, may seem small but there is plenty of seating inside and out Service - super friendly and welcoming. First time? no problem, they were more than happy to answer any questions. Most people get their food to-go, and you're in and out very quick Food - for me, this is the main reason they deserve 5 stars. Overall quality of the food [salmon, shrimp, etc.] is fresh, as well as the toppings. I don't do raw, and specifically the shrimp is bigger than all the other poke places in town. My sister [who does eat raw] ordered the salmon and she also says the fish was more fresh than the last poke place we ate at (Ahem, Salt Water Poke). I forgot to mention that the amount of portions they give you is also more than the other poke joints for the same price (Uhhhh, Salt Water Poke) You won't be disappointed in trying this place out, and if I'm wrong, try the other places and I'm sure you'll be coming back to this place. Finally! Bakersfield has a Poke oriented place that does just Poke! They have other stuff like Killer J's sweet tea, but I'll get into that later. Why 5 stars off the bat? Yes, I know I don't usually give 5 stars after a single visit, but the more I enjoyed the food and chatted with the family that owns Killer Poke, the more I just knew that this place is going to have the consistency in quality and service that I require for 5 stars. So let's get into specifics. This is California Style Poke, meaning that they don't pre-marinade the fish like Hawaiian style does. This has two beneficial effects. First, you know that the fish is fresh by the flavor, texture, and color. Second, Hawaii style is for Hawaii and this is California so suck it Hawaii! JK. I love you Hawaii, but California is better. Just sayin'. Killer Poke is located in an old Bakersfield China Town (yes there is actually a Bakersfield China Town) building that originally held Sam Woo Laundry. The old parking lot was converted to outdoor seating and it is covered so even in summer time it will be a fun place to stop for a bite. The restaurant is beyond clean and very organized. The best part, aside from the great food, is the staff. This is a family owned and family run business, and by family owned, I mean two cool sisters in law co-own the place and their adoring husbands help. GIRL POWER! (That was for Charisse A., I was scoring points there, Happy wife, etc...). So the décor is awesome and the seating is well placed. Order at the Poke bar and tell them what you want as you go down the like. They definitely have health/whole foods substitutes and the like so if you are into that, just ask them what fits your particular dietary needs. You can choose from several types of fish, and there are a gang of add-ins too. The portions are generous and the sauces are fantastic. They have soy, ponzu, Siracha, edo, and a particularly tasty sauce that is their own concoction called "Killer A's" It is definitely worth a try. We loved it. Fresh EVERYTHING will greet you and the flavor is off the hook. Ok, so the drink bar has one of those modern style multi drink dispensers, and off to the side is Killer J's Sweet Tea. I don't think that they actually call it Killer J's Sweet Tea, but the name of the person who created the recipe starts with J, so, I stole the idea from Killer A's Sauce. So sue me. I'm a sweet tea fan since developing a taste for it while living in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. This is definitely as good as sweet tea I had there, and better than most. They also do deviled eggs with lox. We tried a sample and they were really good. Don't forget to try them when you stop in. They are delicious. What's missing? Sweet desserts. The food is so fantastic at Killer Poke that I found myself wanting something to put the icing on the cake (I'm punny). If I were to ask for anything more from Killer Poke it would be a small selection of things like mochi or a cool, sweet dessert. That's just a small thing though, and I have to say I loved the experience, food, and the super nice family who own and run the place. In most cases the word "obsessed" is a bit much but in the case it's accurate to describe my feelings for killer poke as I have eaten here five times in two weeks. From the mountain of fish they give you to the quality of the rice to the multiple sauce options down to the toppings this place has it all. If you're downtown and want a nice healthy lunch or just looking for a New off the beaten path place to get some killer food you should check this place out. I really like this place. Great customer service all around and very helpful. The lady who started us off could tell it was our first time so she was gracious. Think subway of poke. I went with white rice as a base and spicy tuna/raw salmon as my protein. You can also opt for cooked protein. Lots of veggies and sauces to choose from and I really like that a crab option was available for the toppings and not as a protein. I meant to ask if the crab was real or imitation. I was very happy with my bowl and it was very filling. Also opted for the deviled egg/smoked salmon which was tasty. I think this is a great option for bakersfield and they will do well. My only complaint is the price point. 13.00 for a bowl 1.50 to add avocado and 2.29 for a drink. With tax and optional tip you are looking at a 20.00 bill. A little steep for a a goto lunch option, making this an every once in a while visit (at least for me). Killer Poke is a hidden gem downtown to not be overlooked. This place has the friendliest staff, and you can catch the owner(Joy) here almost on any given day. The food is consistently fresh with superb taste. I usually get two scoops of spicy tuna and salmon with all the toppings and joys special sauce! My only dislike is the seating because the tables are not the most comfortable to sit around. However, they do have bar seating as well. I love Poke places! It's the first place I go when I'm out of town. In other cities, there is always a line out the door of gym rats, students and people with great taste. It's healthy (stay away from the Mayo based sauces) and always delicious. It's so great to have a place like this in town. As a Poke professional, this is a super easy location to get to at the corner of 19th and O. Super clean, friendly staff, and clearly a family business. Large variety of toppings and the fish options were fresh, with great color and taste. The smoked salmon was still warm and flavored well. I recommend tuna, salmon and smoked salmon for first timers. The seaweed salad was delicious and their eel and ponzu sauces were tasty with nice consistency. Recommend! Visit! Totally worth tenish bucks for the bowl. The Chipotle of poke! What a wonderful addition to this recently flourishing part of downtown! A stone's throw from Smitten Cafe. The second my boyfriend asked me what I wanted to eat for dinner, I told him that I have been dying to try Killer Poke and the name very apt. Sweet, spicy, savory? All up to you. Yummy fish, so many options. There really is something for everyone (even those on a restricted diet). The salmon deviled eggs are awesome! The decor is minimal and aesthetically pleasing. Indoor and outdoor seating. I'm not giving it the full 5 stars because the rice was a tiny bit mushy for me, but otherwise, everything was fantastic. The staff is attentive and kind. So I was on my way to another Poke place that I love and thought of Killer Poke, so I made a left instead of a right going to Killer Poke instead. I'd remembered that several people had told me about how good this place was. I was excited to try it. When we entered there were only a couple people there and 2 nice young men behind the counter. My son and I ordered 3 proteins each, then my son proceeded to sample every topping available. I was quite a bit more reserved. Honestly I can't imagine why someone would put corn or some of the other toppings offered on Poke. My son was sorry he hadn't been more reserved. I was not impressed with the food in general. The fish just wasn't what I'd had before at other poke places, it was mushy, the house sauce they pitched wasn't wonderful either. It was just okay, but nothing I would go back for. The price was out of line with other poke places I've been where they've had better food. I didn't see a reason to leave a tip, which popped up on the payment screen as I forked out 27 bucks for 2 bowls. I did all the work going through the line and cleaning my table after I left. One of the guys at the counter, that was nice before I paid, was curt in his reply to me when I asked him a question after I paid. As poke enthusiast my wife and I thought this place was going to be good but disappointed after trying the food. We ended up ordering 2 poke bowls and the poke tacos. The fish really didn't taste as fresh as it looked and the sauces tasted a little off compared to the other poke places in town. I was excited for the tacos thinking they were going to be in a hard shell wonton but was greeted with a cold flower tortilla in my opinion those are not really a good combination. When we ordered it felt as if we were rushed and not welcomed like as "order and get out" but other then that the outside patio was ok the trash was full to the top and had a wired smell once opening it to throw away our trash. read more

Excellent little place, but the location is hecka sketchy. I've never had Poke on a cauliflower bed before, but it was actually pretty good. The cauliflower was finely chopped. They also had mango and pineapple as toppings. That was a first for me, too. The spicy tuna was ground, or minced, which wasn't bad, but not what I expected. I thought it would be whole pieces of tuna with a spicy sauce. My other complaint is that they don't sell beer... :( On the whole, the quality of the poke was great. Very fresh and flavorful.
