Glad I was introduced to this spot and got a little back history on the location. (Oprah's a fan)! lol. I've only been here once, but the chocolate dipped rice Krispy treat was fresh and gooey. Sometimes at shops you walk away with a stale purchase, but the chocolate/dessert here was fresh and tasty. My date got the cookies and cream waffle cone and a hand full of pecan candies. Well I will qualify this review and say that I am sitting in Rainbow Cones's parking lot right now and this is what made me remember to write this. I wanted to like Kilwins, I really did. I made 3 sep trips here in hopes that my opinion would change. It did not. The ice cream is ok but for these prices you would expect delectable, can't live without it, dream worthy, drool inducing yumminess. That is certainly not the case here. We even saw the owners on 1 visit and they had dismal looks on their faces. No greeting, no thanks for coming, nothing. If working in an ice cream/sweets shop doesn't make u happy, I don't know what will. My last visit I brought my nephews and we got 3 sep scoops of ice cream. 1 on a specialty cone b/c that's all they had. My total was a little over $17 which was shocking but hey, anything for the kids right?! Got home and saw that they charged me extra for the cone even though that's all THEY had. I said never again. I don't go here often but I'm never disappointed when I do visit them. It's a small shop with a lot to choose from. Now it is in downtown Hyde park so parking is hard to come by. One thing I like is that you can sample the fudge for free. I went this time and got a taffy apple which tasted great. The kids had shakes and cookies which they all loved. The play is a little pricey but worth it. Theres a small area you can sit in and enjoy your treats and public restrooms. read more

Beautiful and delicious chocolate! A very festive and clean establishment with sweets ranging from chocolate covered marshmallos to ice cream and shakes. Staff were helpful and the establishment is very spacious and comfortable with more than enough seating. I tried the chocolate covered marshmallos and they were extremely rich and yummy. Hyde Park has needed a business to fill this niche. The owners, who are often working, are friendly, and they live down the street. I have two gripes: 1) The prices look high to me 2) The place feels vaguely corporate/institutional. This could be corrected by supplementing the Kilwins-branded products with more artisan, locally produced products. Having said this, I predict this business will do well. Hotel guests from the new Hyatt and moviegoers from the new Harper Theater will probably stop by for chocolate or coffee. read more

BEST FUDGE I'VE HAD!! mmmmmm mmmmmmmm mmmmmm Walking past this place on a cold night last night... they get you with the smell of warm delicious fudge (yes I was so cold I smelt warmth!) As per the woman behind the counter... here's the low down: -one slice of fudge for $8.99 (each slice is about half a pound) - or else get two slices for $15.99 plus a free third slice - so it just doesn't make sense to get one!!! - Also you can freeze the fudge up to 6 months in the freezer (not the fridge!) As my bf said to me.... "well I'm sold!" They are really friendly staff and you can try the fudge before buying them. So of course we got three slices!! -was $19.99 incl.tax. We got a slice of sea salt caramel, specialty turtle and the famous hype park mud... omg so yummy and such a smooth creamy flavor. No way are these lasting me 6 months!!! read more

This Kilwins is great! I've been a bunch of times and am never let down. Tonight I went in and was pleasantly surprised by their seasonal flavors, like pumpkin pie and apple pie. All the people who work there are really nice and attentive, and they are always willing to help me pick out ice cream, including giving me lots of tastes of the many flavors. I've also had a couple different flavors of fudge and have not been yet down yet. I highly suggest the birthday cake and salted caramel ice creams! read more

Great selection of ice cream and frozen yogurt here! I got the chocolate chip cookie dough and it was fantastic on a waffle cone. Very rich flavor as I got a double scoop. First off, amazing fudge, the best around, and you can just about always find a groupon for half off fudge too, which comes in handy since the quality is worth the money. The Hyde park mud flavor is the best, highly recommend. It's white chocolate which usually isn't my favorite since in a choco-holic, but the giant chocolate chips and homemade caramel throughout makes it so tasty. In close competition for best caramel you'll find in Hyde Park, right with Amy's. The texture is perfect, and buttery. Amazing selection of chocolate and caramel dipped treats that beautifully displayed right when you walk in. The ice cream looks amazing always, superman is my favorite and you can almost never find it anymore. read more

Oh yes. After consuming a burger from Five Guys, I made my way to Kilwins for a sweet treat. I agonized over my options. Did I want to split a caramel apple with my 4 year old, get some fudge or chocolate covered strawberries. I finally decided on the striped caramel krispie after one of the employees recommended the krispie covered in caramel & walnuts. (The only nuts that I'm a fan of are deez nuts ) The striped caramel krispie was so good. The caramel was rich & it was more than enough for myself & my son to share. I'll be back for some ice cream, caramel apple & chocolate covered strawberries. Oh yeah, they offer free fudge samples. I tried the Hyde Park and the peanut butter flavor. I'll pass on them. I used to live in Hyde Park so I bought a groupon for a dozen chocolate covered strawberries from Kilwins. When I called to place the order the young man who took my order was very positive and nice. I walked in and they offered me a free sample of fudge-yes please! My order wasn't ready because someone had taken my white chocolate strawberries out earlier and didn't put more in. I wasn't in a rush and they were super nice about it so I didn't mind waiting as they dipped some fresh strawberries for me! While I was there a woman walked in with a groupon who didn't place her order beforehand even though she claimed she did. Based on her responses to the questions I knew she didn't but they were nice and accommodated her last minute request without a fuss. I can't wait til I'm in Hyde Park to go to Kilwins! read more

Love the idea that they have, and they execute it very well. The display cases are arranged beautifully and would tempt even the strictest health nut. They have anything and everything you could ever want! I had a mix of 2 different flavors of ice cream and 2 kinds of fudge. The ice cream was wonderful, tasted very fresh and was just the right creamy/textured balance. The fudge disappointed, not because it didnt taste good but just because it wasn't very fresh. It must have been sitting in the case for too long because it was on the crusty side and I had to chew it; there was no option of letting it melt in my mouth. Sadly I didnt discover this until I was home. They are a bit on the pricey side, but I think it is worth it. They offer free samples before you buy so that makes it a lot easier to commit to a $5 cup of ice cream :) Overall, great addition to Hyde park. read more

My visit was two weeks ago during lunch time. I heard about this shop on FB. I decided to visit after viewing a Groupon deal, although I didn't use a Groupon. I purchased dark chocolate-covered marshmallows on a stick with sprinkles. Nice decor that invites you to have a seat. A nice sweet shop to dine in with family, friends or for date night. This company is breaking Health Department rules! I am giving this company a poor rating because of cleanliness. The employees are dipping ice cream for a customer and then going directly to the cash register and handling money -- then going back to another customer and dipping more ice cream without washing their hands. I complained to the manager and was told that 'the employees don't touch the ice cream'. If you have ever dipped ice cream, you know that there is no way you can dip and not touch the ice cream one time or another. So each tub of ice cream has had 15-20 germ-infested hands in it -- yuk!!! I visited the Kilwins stores in both Saugatuck & Holland Michigan within the last few weeks and witnessed this unclean procedure at all of these locations. All of the locations had a ton of employees, so why don't they have specific employees only dedicated to running the cash register and not handling any food? Why does each employee have to ring up their own customers? What does Kilwins Employee Handbook say about handling money and food?? read more

I would love to give Kilwins rave reviews, the store is a great addition to Hyde Park for anyone who loves sweet treats. I also really appreciate the crisp, nostalgic sweet shoppe aesthetic for my kids. HOWEVER, there are some basic customer service/ business management issues here. Granted, the ice cream is pricey. I'm willing to sometimes pay a premium for a treat, but I expect great customer service when I pay that premium. Instead, this Kilwin's treats its customers sub par. 1. My husband asked to taste a chocolate raisin (or something small like that) and was refused a TASTE?? really? 2. I was not allowed to purchase a gift card unless it was at least 25$ because "We don't make money off of the cards" HUNH? 3. What's with weighing the ice cream (it seems like they are afraid to give you too much for the overprice!!) wow. That's just crass BASIC MBA 101. When you bring customers into your doors and treat them well, you build customer loyalty and that makes money. Therefore, kindly allowing a small sample will likely bring you business. Also, a 10$ gift card will guarantee a return visit to redeem the card and most likely those customers will spend more money in your store.. even more you may have exposure to NEW customers who otherwise would not have tried your establishment. I really want this store to succeed, because I'd love to have some old fashioned charming elements in Hyde Park, but when you charge a premium, be willing to provide EXCELLENT customer service. read more

Delivery from hell!! Before I go into the "ordeal," I will say that it is indeed overpriced. You would be better off buying your own ice cream. Also, NEVER order delivery or this might happen: The delivery guy took over an hour to get to my apartment (which is fine - I'm a patient person, and it's just ice cream). He finally calls me and says he doesn't know where my apartment is. Yes, it can be "a little" tricky (by that, I mean it can be hard to find for someone who doesn't live in Hyde Park or own a GPS). So I explain the cross streets to him. He then informs me that he has three cars waiting behind him and he's just going to have to go around again, so this time, he wanted me to be standing outside, so he could see me. Please note: this was also in the bitter Chicago cold. I comply and step outside. He's literally stopped right down the street with ZERO cars behind him (and it's a one way street, so I would have seen them). - he never had to drive around. This is a give away that he just didn't want to do what he's supposed to do: DELIVER. So he honks his horn at me. I'm waving at him to drive over and he just sits there honking until I WALK INTO THE SNOW AND ON THE ICE TO HIS CAR. Here's where it gets creepy: He rolls down the car window and points at it, saying "it's right there." So I had to reach into this stranger's car and retrieve my own delivery. Here's where it gets downright awful: As I turn away, I slip and fall hard on the ice. My hands are torn up and bleeding, my knees are banged up, and I sprained my ankle. All he does is inquire while STILL IN HIS CAR: "Ma'am... you ok? You ok?" I'm shaking at this point (bleeding and in shock), and barely utter a "yeah." So I guess that was his confirmation that he had no ethical or moral obligation to actually check if a human being is hurt. I had to grab onto a nearby parked car in to help myself up and as I was doing so, he took off. Didn't even wait to see if I could stand or even walk across the street through the snow and ice, unlock my apartment building door, and walk in. Unfortunately, this was all done via grubhub, and I tipped ahead of time. So this $@&*^ got away with a 20% tip! Due to the fall, the food got pretty messed up, too. Kilwins told me they would refund me (or do something), but they have to go through grubhub first. They still have yet to refund or do anything. I realize that I fell on the ice and because of my fall, the food was completely messed up. However, they also failed to do what I paid for: deliver to my door. The driver lied, was clearly only concerned about staying warm in his car, and didn't feel like walking 20 feet to the patron. Restaurants live and die by their services, so at the very least, the manager should have called me back to apologize when I contacted both grubhub and the store. read more
