Been here many times!! This was the first ice cream joint I tried when I first moved out here in Chicago. Lovely atmosphere as well as niche decorating in terms of color and brightness. Service and quick and easy. So even if long lines forms, the employees are still quick to serve you. In terms of the actual ice cream itself, so far in my opinion, the best ice cream in Chicago despite other ice cream places I tried here as well after being here for a year. The soft creaminess of the ice cream and their inventive flavors always bring me back. They also have an app for the rewards system so everytime you add your number you're able to earn points to potentially get 5$ off when you reach 1000 points. The Rainbow Cone is a staple in the Chicago area as they are known for their signature "Rainbow Cone" which includes: strawberry, chocolate, Palmer House, Pistachio & orange sherbet! I appreciate them offering both traditional and unique flavors such as "Playdough" (blue moon ice cream with cookie dough pieces), Superman, "The Big Muddy (dark chocolate with brownie pieces) and Palmer House" (New York vanilla with cherries and walnuts). It's been a while since I've eaten there so it was a pleasant surprise to see how extensive their menu a has become. They also offer banana splits, flavored mini donuts, sundaes, ice cream cookie sandwiches, ice cream cakes and beverages. The staff are extremely nice and patient and encourages you to try as many samples as you'd like before ordering which comes in handy. Be prepared to enjoy a creamy, flavorful sweet treat. Grandma used to bring me here when I was a little girl. We would stop in after church on Sundays. It was a nice treat. At seven my palate didn't really appreciate all of the creative flavors that came with the 'original' cone. I always opted for the orange sherbet and it was delicious. Finally made it to the OG Original Rainbow Cone down in Beverly! If you've lived in or around Chicago long enough, you know about this place. It's been around forever, and they're still doing it with surprising quality and efficiency - don't let a line fool you, it moves quickly. I haven't had any of their new flavor combos (and I've only had the original once before at a Wicker Park popup), but the original is what you want. Really great flavor combination with a very impressive chocolate layer. Honestly, the star of the show is the Palmer House, which reminded me of the kind of vanilla w/ chunks of strawberries I remember as a kid back in New Jersey. I'd probably be satisfied with just that and the chocolate, though the whole thing is good. It's not the best ice cream you'll ever have, but it's unique and remains a fun dessert experience. I will note, for myself, that I think I'd prefer a reverse rainbow cone with the orange sherbet on the bottom and the chocolate on top...I wonder if they do that? read more

I went into Rainbow on 9233 S Western in Chicago today and I was disappointed. I assume this individual in the black shirt working the register was the manager. My daughter asked to taste a flavor to which he replied "no", I then asked for a pint of butter pecan and pistachio ice cream and he replied "we don't do that anymore". Now here is the funny thing, I just purchased this pint a week and a half ago. Food is way too expensive now days not to get what you pay for AND a horrible customer experience. Interesting enough the person filling my order did prepare a pint of butter pecan and pistachio that the manager said they no longer did. See the pic attached. I guess they'll just throw it out tonight Note to Rainbow- in today's market no establishment can afford this type of bad customer service. It is either time for some professional development or a performance assessment. You don't want the first customer interaction to be that of a disgruntled employee or one that simply doesn't care about customer satisfaction. Word of mouth and reviews hold so much weight. My family and I have been patronizing this establishment for years and even considered selecting Rainbow this summer for our family reunion and as an end of the year treat for the CPS school that a family members work for. The customers seemed very happy the day we arrived because it was Father's Day and fathers and kids and grandkids were all smiles. Walls in the place are colorful and bright. Ordered the Cookies and Cream Crunch Sundae. Should have read the description as the title didn't accurately describe it as a donut and hot fudge sundae. 40% of the mass of the treat was 5 mini-donuts. 35% was toppings (hot fudge, whipped cream, nuts etc), and only about 20% was ice cream. The ice cream was good but I was not expecting a donut sundae given the name of the dessert. And given the likely consistent portions and distributions, don't think i need to order from again. I came in today to get my birthday sliced creation. I am glad they allowed me to pick one of their new flavors. I've been wanting to try the minty city flavor which is their version of mint chocolate chip. I am appreciative of the manager making it happen, and they even wrapped it really nicely for me to take it to go. They served me in a cone and wrapped everything in foil, which ensure my ice cream would be secure and not leak. Thankfully, it's a short drive for me, and everything is safe and sound. Special shout out to Ozzy for building my cone and triple packing it. I love how the original rainbow cone is getting creative with new flavors, not that I don't like the original. The minty city is delicious, filled with chunks of chocolate chip, amazing mint to chocolate ratio, everything I expected and more. I'm not a Chicago native so I didn't know about this item. My husband introduced me to it and it is great! Who would think that combo would work in any universe yet somehow it does. I wound up getting the candy cane shake which was delicious and a quart of the rainbow to go. They also have pint size. Guess it would be to hard to get the mix in a gallon dang it! My first experience was with a truck that came to a local fast food place by us. I got a cone and sat in my car looking at it before I dove in. Now I look to see when it will be in my area as I don't make it to that part of the city often. Finally was in the neighborhood and got to visit the famous rainbow cone! What a treat. This place is like a time capsule. It was a busy Saturday with a line out the door, but it still went by relatively quick thanks to the wonderful employees. The concept of the rainbow cone seemed super strange to me (all these flavors together had to be too good to be true right?), but it's been a staple forever, so they must be doing something right. If you aren't familiar, it's a cone consisting of chocolate, strawberry, palmer house, pistachio, and orange sherbert - in that order! Sherbert on top of ice cream just seems bizarre right? But it WORKS! It's kind of like a neopolitan on steroids. The best part was that it wasn't overly sweet for being five scoops of ice cream. The flavors work together and I finally understand the hype. The cone comes in a holder that catches all the dripping ice cream which is inevitable, but the catcher is genius! This is a MUST if you are in the area! On hot days, expect a line out the door. Parking is limited in the back of the place but street parking is also available as well. If you are going to take a photo for social media, make sure you either get a size small or a large. The baby size one won't look good in photos =P And trust me, this rainbow cone is addicting and you'll definitely want more! My husband, our little girl dog and I came to this location (which I am told is the original location as well) to meet our friends, who are locals, and their dog. My friend highly recommended meeting here because it was just perfect for a very warm summer day, is dog friendly and thought I would like to get some cute photos with the ice cream here (she knows me well). We came around 7:30 pm and there were a few parking spots in their lot. While my friend and I waited outside on one of the benches (please note that there is tables outside and there is also seating inside), our husbands went inside and waited in line to order. My husband got: Large Rainbow Cone, $6.25 + Waffle Cone, $1.59 prior to tax- Wow is all I can say. I am actually quite surprised how many flavors of ice cream is on this cone and also surprised how it all stays on top of the waffle cone my husband bought. The flavors of the rainbow here are: orange sherbet, pistachio, palmer house (which I think taste like vanilla), strawberry, chocolate. There is a small little drip tray under this frozen behemoth artistry. Honestly with the way it is stacked, its hard to taste each individual flavor. But I still enjoyed it. I tasted mostly the orange sherbet since it was on top and looks like you are given the most of that flavor and not nearly as much as the strawberry. I think the large size may be too big and think a small size would have been better but my husband thought this would be best for the 3 of us to share (please note that chocolate is a no- no for dogs). ------------------------------- (Total= $8.73 after tax) I had no idea that Rainbow cone is one of those typical Chicagoan foods (besides deep dish pizza and a Chicago dog for example). I have visited Chicago a few times before this visit and never knew.
