I come here any chance I get to book an appointment. Absolutely the best deal you can get in all of Seattle, with low prices and fast quality service. Seriously, the first time I came here I was in and out in 20 minutes tops for a short haircut. (For reference, my hair is a short enough pixie cut that it's basically a "men's" haircut). Highly recommend calling ahead for an appointment. She takes walk-ins, but there's really no telling if she's booked for the day or how long you might wait. My first visit I got lucky with a walk-in, and the time after I made an appointment and was done super quickly. She's fast and to the point when asking you what you want, but she's thorough and does make sure to ask before going in on details (sideburn shape, how long do you want the bangs, etc.) I've brought reference photos before, but last time I gave her quick specs on what I wanted (keep the top long, buzz/fade the sides, etc.) and I loved what I got. Kim is excellent at what she does, and I appreciated how she asks for your feedback as she is cutting your hair. The salon is in a convenient location, right off the Int'l District/Chinatown train stop. You also can't beat the price - about $40 for a women's long haircut. My only gripe is that it took me a lot of phone calls just to get an appointment 10 days out. During my appointment, the phone was ringing constantly. This was my first time here. Walked in with no appointment but was graciously accepted, only had to wait 15-20 minutes for 2 previous guests. Highly recommend that you book an appointment in advance especially on Sundays when Kim is the only one working. She turned away other walk-ins after me, so that was extremely nice of her to let me wait. Showed her a pic of my previous hairstyle and she did it perfectly. Costed $18 before tip. Let's face it, a male haircut for $13 in downtown Seattle is a pretty good deal. In addition, I was also very appreciative of the fact that they are open on Sundays from 9AM-5AM, which most other places are not. I went in without an appointment and had to wait about 1 hour for a haircut, which was longer than I would have liked. I also noticed a couple coming in with an appointment but had to wait about 30 minutes for their haircuts, which seemed a bit long. I have been coming here for over three years so I don't need to tell Kim how to cut my hair...she already knows what I want and gets it done. Kim study from Gene Juarez Academy of Beauty, while Gene Juarez offer her a job, she just didn't want to only cut hair...so she open her own Hair Salon with her husband. She can do it all and she does. I also like the prices, haircut and shampoo with conditioner is only $15...plus she massages your head! I decided to try Kim Hair Salon based on the positive reviews I saw on Yelp. I gave this place 1star because of customer service: the people who worked there are super nice, and they hardly kept me waiting for more than 10 minutes. The hair cut, however, was a disaster. I asked the lady to give me some volume and keep the length. She ended up making my hair super short in the front, and not choppy cut, yet blunt and 70s-like cut. I was there yesterday getting a straight perm. She told me it will take 4 hours, but it ended up being 5.5 hours. And this was AFTER I complained. They were busy, and would leave my hair half way ironed to cut someone else's hair. After she finished up 2 customers and started on a third customer( at this point it was 4 hours in), I spoke up. For the price of a haircut here its hard to complain. The stylists here are friendly and attentive. When I get a haircut I tend to think to myself, "Oop that part is too long. I hope they fix that." Living in Seattle's International District offers several choices of barbers within walking distance. Kim does the best job of them all and is friendly and easygoing. I've twice had people ask where I had my hair cut, liking what they saw, even though it was about 2 weeks since Kim had cut it. I can usually go 4 weeks before it needs to be cut again with Kim, other barbers it will be only 2.5 - 3 weeks before it's time to see the barber. Current price for men is $16. I always come here because it is so cheap. But they mostly always have a wait. I would come to get an eyebrow wax and haircut from time to time and they would end up great but haircut would be a tad bit too short at times but still good. I would get my hair dyed as well but they would take care of other customers before me, making me wait 2 hours in total for a simple hair dye.. The only bad thing here besides the wait. I just needed a 1 inch trim and some layers because my hair was thick. No bang cut or anything that required much skill. But she cut much more than I liked. The length was OK but the layering was a disaster. After she blew dry my hair, it looked worse than before I had the cut. I guess for that price I should not expect too much but I really thought a 1 inch trim and layer should be easy.... I needed a pedicure S.O.S. today and being that I am new in Seattle ended in Kim's Salon (been here before once as well for a hair S.O.S). Look, if you're a man who wants a fashionable, modern Asian haircut, then don't come here. Then again, where are you going to find that anywhere in Seattle? I've shown pictures of contemporary Asian men's haircuts to stylists here and they've insisted that it was out of date and proceeded to give me tapered sides and a spiky top. I didn't realize that clippers and a pair of scissors were all you needed to travel back in time! So if you accept that Seattle is not LA or Toronto, then Kim's Salon is OK. Their technique is fair and they know how to handle Asian hair. The old couple that run the place are nice and they will sometimes listen to your requests and other times do whatever the hell they want. If you're determined to get your hair your way, then show them ample pictures AND watch what they're doing during the cut and stop them if they go off the reservation. One time the man decided mid-cut to make my hair SUPER short and sheepishly tried to excuse it later by saying it looked better. I'm pretty sure he just screwed up and attempted to cut off the mistake. There is a competing salon just a few shops east of this one, on the 2nd floor above a psychic parlor. Also run by an old Asian couple and also very inexpensive. They are no more fashionable than Kim's, but because they're less busy, they will spend much more time getting your hair just right. read more

Worst haircut ever..my hair was long really long. Was coming and expected to get it cut, but mostly for the colored parts (which looked like an ombre). I came 10min late for my appointment and Kim showed up telling me i had to wait for her to eat lunch cause I was late. Lol. I found it funny but whatever. I wanted to leave afterthat and hating myself rightnow for not doing it. After about 20min waiting for her to finish up, she waved at me to get seated. I carefully explained to her how i wanted my hair to look, basically just a long bob and the ombré to be gone. The process was about 15min before wash and 15 more after. She just kept chopping of my hair as i was repeating do not cut short. I think what she heard was "please give me your hair or pulling and hurting my head (ears) more often if you cant do so!". What a wack! She even approached to my bang and tried to cut it too. Hold up bruh.. i arent your daughter. The result looked like someone just unfinished chewing off my hair. There were big blanks between layers. Literally like I could find an old blunt scissors and finish myself up like Kim did. Thank you. I had quite long hair but they are all gone now :( :( The first half of the haircut was good. I liked it. But in the end she started cutting but hair from all over in such a way that the back part became very thin. Now its looking like a boy cut and there is no design in front part of hair. Its just cut short till my eyebrows (No steps just a cut short).. I am very very disappointed with this place. They are closed on Monday, so I waited until Tuesday to go there. Walked in at 12:00pm and waited for 20 minutes while i browse the magazines and newspapers both in Chinese and English. Kim didn't cut my hair; her employee did. She was pretty friendly regarding my questions, but the cutting was on the quiet side. She focused on cutting my hair, so it wasn't a bad thing. In the end my hair looks acceptable, but I get the idea of "did I cut it myself?" when I look in the mirror because the cuts were not totally accurate. I had medium hair, but she said that is long hair and charged for $20. They accept MasterCard and Visa, but not Discover. I once tried My Anh hair salon at Mt Baker, and I would go back there after comparing these two based on price, skills and friendliness even though it is more far away. read more

I dropped in to see if she had some availability right away (big no-no usually), and even though she was pretty busy, she still slid me in with enough time to make my train!
