However, udon noodles are something I have rarely ever ordered over the years. Especially as Ramen seems to have gotten more popular over the years than Udon. Plenty of Ramen restaurants within Greater Vancouver, but how many restaurants in Vancouver specialize in udon? Not very many. I don't know why I don't order udon noodles more often. When it's a cold, rainy day I always think Ramen noodles but this bowl of Vege Udon was just as satisfying as any bowl of Ramen. Actually, maybe more so since I've had lots of Ramen over the years but hardly any bowls of udon noodles. This was a refreshing change of pace. They serve the udon noodles in what appeared to be a cast iron bowl. Simple yet so elegant. I loved the flavor of my broth. It was a nice, light broth. Not too rich, and it had a sweet flavor to it. I think I've just regained a new appreciation for Udon noodles!

The curry Donburi was not too spicy, on the mild side and the potato croquettes were very tasty. The gyozas were good. Sashimi was fresh. Our friend who came in from Montreal declared it was one of the best Dragon rolls she had ever tasted. The crunchy topping for crunch crunch was delightful. We usually like getting Avocado roll from another restaurant that's actually in the same block as this restaurant. Always happy to know of another place though where we can get a good Avocado roll. No signs of browning on any of the Avocado, and they were very generous with the amount of Avocado that was put into the roll. This place was apparently part of the Dine Out Vancouver event. They had a Dine Out menu that was $55 but none of us chose to go for that. We preferred to order off the regular menu. I like that they have some different offerings on their menu such as the Angry Tofu, and I also saw Oden on the menu. This is probably the first time I've seen Oden on the menu at Japanese restaurant on the North Shore. On the other hand, I was surprised that some of the usual items I tend to see on most other Japanese restaurant menus, were not on the menu here. Seafood Yakisoba for example, wasn't on the menu. I still walked out way fuller than I had intended to be though. It was a good salad though. Japanese salad dressings seem to agree with me more than Western style salad dressings. Avocado Cone was the highlight for me though cuz at heart...I'm just not really a salad person. It's something I eat when I wanna eat lighter and steer away from the carbs. Kinda wished they'd brought my salad sooner so I could have eaten it first and then finished off with my Avocado Cone, but they brought my Avocado Cone first and took quite awhile to bring my salad. I went here for a special occasion dinner. Reservations are highly recommended because they are…read morevery small - 12 diners per sitting and 2 sittings per night. I made reservations about 4 months in advance. Upon arrival, one of the hostesses opened the door for us, and asked us to wait in a very ornate waiting area. We only waited a couple of minutes before another hostess seated us at the main seating area. The space is very dark, and only lit with candles while the rest of the diners trickled in. During that time they take drink orders, which is limited to sake, wine, beer and a few non-alcoholic drinks. Of note, they don't provide a drink menu, so we were a little surprised by the cost - the yuzu sake and the plum wine were $30 each. My non-alcoholic drink was $12, but a fair size. The theatrical portion started a few minutes later than the official start time - closer to 6pm. The shades lifted, the lights turned on, and the chefs introduced themselves. And from that moment on, they immediately went to work preparing our meal. They operate like clockwork to show the ingredients whole to the diners, and then preparing them, and serving them. Soon as the one dish was completed by all the diners, the next round came shortly after. Over 20+ dishes, there was very little wait time in between each. Each time a dish was served, a hostess was there to describe the dish and provided tips on how best to eat it. The food was overall was very good. I thought a few items were very average, most of them were very good, and a select few were truly outstanding. Most of the ingredients are imported from Japan, so I would imagine that it's part of the reason it's so expensive. This is definitely a splurge meal. I think half the diners at our sitting was celebrating a birthday. On the most part, the food is very good, watching the chefs at work is part of the entertainment, and the service is excellent. It's not some place I could afford to go to often, but glad to do it at least this one time.
