Chef prime sashimi is must try, fresh and sweet, feel like eating in Japan. Very warm atmosphere and typical nice neighborhood restaurant good service reasonable price, need to make reservations beforehand

Zen is located in West Vancouver. It's been ranked as one of the best sushi restaurants in the North Shore so we decided to try it out. It's a nice looking restaurant - not too fancy but not like your typical sushi place. The menu is quite large and rather intimidating. It was hard to know what to pick and if what we were picking would be enough to make us full. I started out with the Spicy Sashimi. The tuna and salmon sashimi was marinated in a spicy sauce and presented as an upside down cone. Underneath it was a circle of cucumbers. It was pretty decent. I then tried the Seaweed Bites. It was a trio of sushi rice topped with tuna, salmon and ebi. It looked like we were eating three small tacos. While the plate was quite tasty, the seaweed wasn't large enough to wrap all the food that was stacked on top of it so it was very messy to eat. For the main dish I decided to just have the Yam Roll and the California Roll. I received seven pieces each so 14 in total. They tasted like any other sushi restaurant in Vancouver. I was very disappointed that they don't offer brown rice. The worst part of the restaurant was our waitress. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. People have bad days but despite my family and I being extremely courteous and friendly, our waitress was short and didn't bother to fully answer our questions. She asked if any of us wanted dessert while we were still finishing our main dishes, and when we said 'no,' she gave us the bill while we were still finishing up. I don't know why she was in a rush to get us out since the restaurant wasn't very busy and we were spending $300. We left after 90 minutes too. My portion of the bill was $65, so it's overpriced for what you get. I'd rather spend $100 and go to Masayoshi or Miku. Service was 0.5. Food was 2.5. Overall experience was 2.0. We won't come back.

One of my girl friend told me that Zen have the best sushi and sashimi in town! Really? I decided to give it a try! I made the rsvn via Open table and found they're doing Groupon promotion $15 worth for $30. I made the trip all the way from Richmond to West Vancouver for dinner and my hubby went there with me reluctantly! We got seated by the window and view was great. We checked out the menu and most items were pretty common. We were not even interested in any signature roll. Toro Sashimi - It wasn't fresh enough and fatty at all! Sushi - Eel, saba, botan ebi, tobiko and tako were mediocre. Wagyu beef sushi - The worst wagyu beef I had in Vancouver. I suspected what grade of wagyu beef was it? Beef sashimi - Beef was tasteless. We didn't bother to order any dessert, we got the bill and paid to leave.

DEF ONE OF MY TOP 5 SUSHI PLACES IN VANCOUVER! The service was great and the patio is so nice. We tried the premium hot sake and all the martinis (the asian pearl was really strong). We ordered a ton of things off the menu: Ebi sunomono - good, nothing special, wouldn't order again. Ebi blossoms - very different from what I expected, but very tasty. Prawn tacos - again very different because of the daikon, but I'm glad I tried it. Stuffed tomato - MUST TRY! I was confused by the name I didn't realize it was going to be tuna wrapped scallop, my favourite! Hamachi and tuna nigiri - the sashimi is SO buttery smooth and melts in your mouth. Torched scallop nigiri - MUST order Torched sablefish and crab - both good and different Salmon skin nigiri - pass We also got two rolls which I can't remember the names, but super interesting that the rolls are wrapped with soy and egg crepe instead of seaweed. They were really good too but the nigiri sushi definitely was my favourite!

Amazing find! One of the best meals of my life (and I have had many!) found this gem on Yelp, almost never review, yet this place is so good, that I am compelled to share this review with anyone who really likes fine food.

Service and view at this place is 5 star. Food was quite good, it can improve. I will definitely come back.

I made reservations about 4 months in advance. Upon arrival, one of the hostesses opened the door for us, and asked us to wait in a very ornate waiting area. We only waited a couple of minutes before another hostess seated us at the main seating area. The space is very dark, and only lit with candles while the rest of the diners trickled in. During that time they take drink orders, which is limited to sake, wine, beer and a few non-alcoholic drinks. Of note, they don't provide a drink menu, so we were a little surprised by the cost - the yuzu sake and the plum wine were $30 each. My non-alcoholic drink was $12, but a fair size. The theatrical portion started a few minutes later than the official start time - closer to 6pm. The shades lifted, the lights turned on, and the chefs introduced themselves. And from that moment on, they immediately went to work preparing our meal. They operate like clockwork to show the ingredients whole to the diners, and then preparing them, and serving them. Soon as the one dish was completed by all the diners, the next round came shortly after. Over 20+ dishes, there was very little wait time in between each. Each time a dish was served, a hostess was there to describe the dish and provided tips on how best to eat it. The food was overall was very good. I thought a few items were very average, most of them were very good, and a select few were truly outstanding. Most of the ingredients are imported from Japan, so I would imagine that it's part of the reason it's so expensive. This is definitely a splurge meal. I think half the diners at our sitting was celebrating a birthday. On the most part, the food is very good, watching the chefs at work is part of the entertainment, and the service is excellent. It's not some place I could afford to go to often, but glad to do it at least this one time.

Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

Not just for great sushi, but really affordable prices as well. Yes, the wait for a table can get long. We waited about 45 minutes, and there's no area to wait except outside or go take a walk since they will text you when your table is ready. I also appreciate seeing where my place in line is through Yelp! First, a shoutout to the wonderful service here. Everywhere I go in Vancouver the service is great, but the server here was so friendly, helpful and efficient. The ambiance is really nice here and I love the place settings! We had a lot, so here is my breakdown: Spicy Agedashi Tofu - lightly fried tofu in a sauce that reminded me of gochuchang sauce. 7/10 Gyoza - crispy fried with a pork/veggie filling. 6/10 Karaage chicken - on the bone, but delicious nonetheless. Served with a mayo sauce. 7/10 Tuna Bomb - 10/10 this came out last because it takes longer to make. This is an absolute must-do. Crispy rice patties with a spicy tuna spread that you just place on the rice. Salmon jalapeno aburi hako - 10/10 I have been excited about this since I heard about it. The seared salmon on top of rice with a shrimp tempura running through the middle. The salmon and sauce on top melt in your mouth. Red Dynamite Roll - 9/10 this was my brother's favorite. I wanted it to be a bit spicier, but that said it's still so amazing. Mango Flower Roll - 9/10 if you like mango then you will love this. This also just melts in your mouth and that mango is just so fresh. California roll - 8/10 as great as a California roll can be! No complaints here! Rainbow Roll - I didn't get to try it, but my niece gave it a 10/10! I will definitely be coming back here again.

However, there were still many options, at least 15+ aburi sushi and assorted sushi boxes, as well as 5 or so sashimi boxes. Prices for prepared foods are just a tiny bit above average, but the items we chose were fresh and very tasty, making them well worth the price. We picked up : * aburi salmon 6pc ($15) --- Solid for the price. A good, average aburi that's comparable to what you'd get at a restaurant. * hamachi sashimi 4pc med-fatty ($16) --- Comparable in both price and freshness to a sit-down spot. Great cuts. * warabi mochi ($6.50) --- not sure how they transport these or if they were ever frozen, but it honestly didn't matter. The texture was soft and chewy, nearly on par with the fresh warabi mochi I've had in Japan. If you're a warabi mochi fan, I'd definitely recommend picking one up. * hamachi collar $9.50 --- Pleasantly surprised to find such a decent meaty portion for under $10. The marbling looked incredible when we first saw it. Felt like a mythic find, although I'm not one who goes out of my way to find fish collars. We baked and broiled it for a delicious dinner :) For some quality fish in those boxes, I'd pay the slight premium for Aburi market's sushi/sashimi options over the average grocery store any day.
