Used to love ordering our Briskets from Kinder's, just sad to see that they closed their business down across from the Safeway shopping center on East Ave. they have a food wagon now out by the new Courthouse on Bruce Road and they still do catering but it's just not the same. Stopped by kinder's for some barbecue ordered the ribs and brisket had to pay an extra $1.5 for each of these which I would normally wouldn't mind, but the brisket was like 80% fat. The tater tots were my favorite part and the ribs were pretty good too. Didn't have much of an experience with the service but no complaints about it. I haven't had a chance to leave a review until now because of traveling but I stopped here back in December. Everyone always raved about this place and I was moving out of Chico so I had to give it a try before I departed. I LOVE their spices they offer so I should have known I would have LOVED their food as well! I ordered the Kinder's Chicken Philly on a Sourdough Roll, Kinder's Famous Ball Tip Steak Sandwich on a Sweet Roll (I added Swiss Cheese as well.) We also opted for Tequila Lime Fries w/ Roasted Garlic BBQ sauce and had to complete the order with a 1/2 pint of Ranch!! Anyways, lunch was DELICIOUS! Having been around Kinder's for 50+ years since San Pablo. This is obviously a franchise and poorly run. Their infamous Ball-tip sandwich's is not made like the 1000's Ball-tip sandwiches I have eaten from them prior. They grilled the meat to beyond well done. This shop is riding the coattails of a legend. Service is horrible and the setting is pathetic. It would be ok is their food prep was up to the standard the John and Dan required. I hope Justin reads this post and takes action. This shop is not the Kinder's I and many are accustom too. I will be seeking a refund. read more

The food is great! Generous portions of meat, no gristle, no frills either. Good barbeque. Good prices and sweet service. The downside: YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING! There is no signage, no parking lot understanding of WHERE to park and no KNOWLEDGE that you will need to walk around the side of the house, between that and the gazebo to the little window at the back building where someone will take an order! No picture of what you are getting. Just the menu, held down from the wind by the rocks on either side. 10 minutes top to get your order. So the ambience is a big zero. Signage would be a HUGE help to drive traffic to some really excellent barbeque. Grilled onions would have been a plus on either sandwich we had, not the raw that was on the BBQ my husband had. Sadly the last two times that we've ordered we didn't receive exactly what we ordered. I very well understand that when they're out of an item they can't always help it however to not let us know and simply replace what we ordered with whatever they feel like is beyond not acceptable and grounds for us no longer being a loyal customer. Imagine going to a sit down restaurant and ordering a steak with fries and they bring you chicken or fish and a baked potato. How long would a restaurant last if they did this? That's basically what happened to us, they gave us whatever they felt like or had left rather than letting us know ahead of time that they were out of things. To just replace what you order with whatever they felt like? NOT acceptable. Here are our last 2 experiences: Our 2nd to last order one of our 4 plates we asked for only white meat and without telling us they gave us all dark meat. We figured they're human and simply made a mistake so not a big deal. However yesterday with our last order we ordered 4 different plates and not even one of them had exactly what we had ordered. Maybe they were out of chicken (we understand, that can happen) but rather than calling us and asking us what we wanted instead (or to ask us if we wanted to cancel our order) ... they just replaced all chicken with all ribs. Did they or anyone think that would be ok? Also maybe they were out of corn bread since 3 of us received biscuits instead of the corn bread that we had ordered. Bottom line is we're guessing they were overwhelmed yesterday with business (a good thing) or short staffed (covid ?) however to not have called us to let us decide if we would accept ribs or pick something else for whatever they were out of, etc is NOT acceptable nor good business practice. If you don't mind when you order something that you'll instead get whatever they feel like giving you, without any phone call asking you for permission to do so then maybe try and see what you get when you get home or have it delivered. read more

Still awful. Rude staff, dry bbq, under cooked baked potatoes and the salad has so much shredded cheese that it should be considered a cheese plate with some wilted greens. They might have nice napkins but I've yet to receive one. read more

I'm really sad that I only found out about this place after the pandemic. I was only able to get take-out from this place. I wish I was able to experience indoor dining. Service: The casher was super friendly and helpful. Had a very great smile! I felt very welcomed. I couldn't ask for anything better Food: Ribs: My favorite of the meats! I really liked it with the hot BBQ sauce. The meat itself was tender (not quite fall off the bones yet) but cooked to perfection. Ball-Tip: This was a close second favorite. The tenderness took me by surprise. I'll be honest, at first glance it looked dry. But I was wrong! It was juicy and moist with a burst of flavor. Hot links: It's your average hot link, but I still really enjoyed it. It was cooked well where it got that nice dense bite and juice to it. Tots: My absolute favorite side dish! OMG that tequila lime seasonal is a must try (if you've never tried it before) Mac and Cheese: Overall it was above par from most other restaurant, but it wasn't my favorite thing here. I just ordered Kinder's from door dash. I spent over $30 for two sandwiches and a side of fries. My husbands sandwich came with onions when I said no onion and my tri tip ball sandwich was horrible. I only ate a 1/3 of a half of mine because every bite was full of gristle and the sandwich was so soggy all the veggies inside slid out. The door dash delivery driver Marsha, was lovely though. I usually love kinders. But something was way off this time. I ordered the bbq salad and added steak to it. I ordered it medium. It came in mangled dried out strips with lots of fat pieces. It tasted like unseasoned burger meat. I didn't eat it. I also ordered chicken strips for the first time. They came in a very weird batter and we're in very weird cuts. Super sad to have to write this review, but got takeout from the new location and it just wasn't as good as the previous downtown restaurant location. Meats seemed tough/overcooked and the sides were just meh. I loved getting a combo plate for lunch at the old location (and their baked potatoes...wow!). Food pretty good! But we called in and they put us on hold (laid the phone down). My wife waited for about 10 minutes and we quickly realized they had forgotten about us. No worries! I called and let them know that she is on hold on the other line and that we would like to make an order. Family of four... $80! I hung up but wife, still on hold, heard the gentleman who answered my call call me an a**hole. Ha. We ordered from another restaurant but stayed on hold and heard all of the conversations in the background. I called and let him know we heard everything and he denied it. As a college student 7 years ago, my friends and I make a weekly trip to Kinder's to eat the balltip sandwich because it was unbelievably so delish. The tri tip was thick cut, juicy, and cooked to perfection- just a little pink inside. Now it's just three thinly sliced pieces of beef jerky, so hard and dry you could barely chew it. I ended up giving them to my dogs. So sad to see how the quality of their sandwiches have deteriorated so much. read more

I haven't had barbecue this good since the 70s in the Santa Ynez Valley. The ball tip is amazing! No one even does it much less does it right these days! So tender! The chicken is melt-in-your-mouth delicious! The lime ribs fall off the bone! I love the garlic BBQ sauce although none of the aforementioned need any sauce they're delicious all on their own! Love the potato salad, love the fries oh, and the piggy mac and cheese is to die for! And I am very picky about my mac and cheese! These guys do it right I cannot say enough good things! In my quest for real BBQ ribs in Chico, I decided to try out Kinders. I am so glad I did! I didn't want baby back, because there is not very much meat and they tend to be dry. Kinders serves spare ribs (St Louis Style), and that's exactly what I was looking for. I am writing this review while I am still eating the ribs. I think that they are so good, that I don't even want to wait 'til I finish to write about them! Seriously, these are probably the best ribs I have ever had, not just in Chico, but anywhere. It has not been until recently, that I learned what goes into good BBQ, so most of what I have eaten in the past barely qualified (Armadillo Willy's, Tony Romas, Chili's or Outback). Value: I ordered a 1/2 slab for $11 (no sides) to go. I thought the price was reasonable, considering that they have to do the dry rub/marinade, smoke them for 3 hours, then heat them up and sauce them before serving. There's a lot of labor and love that goes into it! I got 6 big, juicy ribs with a nice (but light) coating of sauce on them (see my photo, #5). Flavor: The rub has a salty flavor with a hint of kick too it. The regular BBQ sauce is just a little sweet, which I like. The meat has not too much of a smoky flavor at all - it sort of blends in with the rest of the flavors, so it doesn't overwhelm. Texture: The meat seems perfectly cooked - soft but not falling off the bone. When I bite into it, I get a well defined bite mark, which is apparently what the standard for "doneness" is (I watch BBQ Pitmasters! LOL). Service: I ordered at the register and the guy there was friendly. He offered me a glass of water while I waited. I waited about 10 minutes for my "to go" order to be ready. I was offered sauces to take with me, mild, spicy or extra spicy. Very nice... A couple of minor complaints/comments: I came by a few days earlier at 7:40pm and was told they closed at 7pm, even though their web site said 8pm. It's a little difficult to find the first time you go. Signage could be better. Next Time: Believe me, their *WILL BE* a next time! I saw the Ball Tip sandwich and the Rib Eye sandwich that the people in front of me in line ordered, and they sure looked good. I need to try both of those! Overall: Highly recommended!! Can I just say coming from where Kinder's actually comes from to this wanna be Kinder's I'm very disappointed. They don't have the deli that the normal Kinder's chain has! The ribs were not the same! The fries not the same and didn't taste like the tequila lime fries. The fact that they are allowed to use the name and sell these foods that don't even remotely compare to the Kinder's family's legacy in BBQ is insane! This isn't KINDER'S!!!! read more

Love this place! The first time I had Kinder's was at a grad party for my friend. It was catered so to me the meat and everything was not as fresh/hot as it could have been. It was good for BBQ, but it didn't wow me. Second time, totally different story! I went to the restaurant and had the pulled pork sandwich topped with coleslaw. I added some spicy BBQ sauce and it only enhanced the flavor of the already tasty meat and slaw. The only down side is that they don't serve beer! If/when they start, Kinder's will get 5 stars from me. read more

We checked out Kinders at the Taste of Chico. They had a great booth with nice decor and plenty of people to work. That worked out for them because they had a lot of people in line but it moved a long pretty quickly. They also gave nice portions. We had the pulled pork that came with cole slaw. They were both very tasty. Meat was tender and not dry. If you're looking for good meats to take home, ribs, hot links, deli sandwiches, etc. they have really good quality meat. One of my favorites is their marinated balltip. I have never gottn a tough piece and my guests are always happy with it. Their marinades and bbq sauce are very tasty too. And the owners are very friendly. They are worth the trip downtown. read more
