Bao down!!! Not sure which location I'm reviewing here matters too much. I've been to a couple, MILLS and UCF and both were great. I had never heard of bao until it hit the scene 4-5 years ago and these opened in Mills district. I had been to every spot down at mills and 50 so naturally had to try King Bao. I'm a huge bao fan now and even away from Florida will look for bao spots. And it is all the King Bao's fault. They have a hot chicken that made me like kimchi slaw. The lobster bao was clawing me to come back again and again, and the tater tots!!! I've had them truffle style, kimchi and fire. They are all so yummy! I'm big into crispy tots over fries when there is a choice I always pick tots. Theirs do not disappoint. Even with the toppings not one lost it's crunch or was too soggy to pick up. If you never had bao before it is essentially a puffy bun. It can be used in place of a taco shell or pinched and made into a dumpling. It's pillowy and not doughy even though it looks like it would be. Little puffy soft taco shaped clouds of goodness. King Bao has a usual menu you can get pretty much all the time and they will rotate some special ingredients through their list and I will try them all. I've been known to overestimate how many bao I can eat, aka ordered one of everything I wanted to try out of excitement. It was totally worth it. I took some home and they were great at the next meal even though they were reheated. Service was fast, and friendly. I have NEVER tried Bao. I was always curious so for 2020 I decided to give it a shot. They are delicious! All the photos of the buns make them look like they would taste like unproofed dough. Not at all they are soft and dense and not slimy like I expected them. Really good. Then there is the value at King Bao. Two bao buns and a drink for only $7.00. Such a deal and they are quite filling too. I opted for the Coco Loco which was a coconut Shrimp and Mango Salsa which was amazing. The hot coconut shrimp with the cool mango on the dense bun was great. My favorite by far was the Cuban and I can totally see myself getting a future craving for one of these very soon. I love that you can mix and match the different types of Bao. It was delicious and so happy that my brother was able to come and try some for the first time. I had three different ones: Hogzilla and the pork belly was cooked perfectly and the other items (carrots, peanuts, cilantro) were a perfect balance mixed together. Parking is awful so just be prepared for possible street parking but that's the only negative thing about this place. We went here for dinner after reading so many good things about it. This was originally a food cart, opened by a Vietnamese chef, Vic Nguyen before it became a restaurant in 2016. Beyond the tinted windows, prison-like lighting, crammed space, and kitchen in the back, you can find some of the best food in Orlando here! In case you didn't know, at Vietnamese places, the worst the customer service and shadier the joint, the better the food (and price) usually are! Take it from a Vietnamese person! For the food - we got the Hogzilla, Glen Rhee Bao, and veganville. The Hogzilla came with a big piece of braised pork belly to perfection in a soy sauce marinade. It was rich but came with picked radish and carrots which balanced out the flavor. The Glen Rhee bao is a korean inspired marinated beef that is paired with cilantro and sweet apple that harmonized together beautifully between the salty, sweet, and earthy flavors of the ingredients. The veganville (because we always need some vegies in our meal) was a very lightly fried tofu w/ shallot, pepper, and peanuts which was very light and refreshing and contrast well with the other rich dishes. Overall, I cannot gush about how good the food are and would definitely come back to try the other flavors!! Space and customer service could be better but at this price for the quality of the food, I do not expect much more. TLDR; HIGHLY recommend to anyone and will return for the food which is packed with flavor that is complex and well balanced. I first discovered King bao about a year ago and I can truly say that it's just as good now as it was then! I love the kickin' chicken bao - but there are tons of other options to choose from. They also have some tots and dessert. They now have indoor seating again and their pick-up option is efficient and easy. I will say, as a heads up, that it is usually busy and there's usually a line whether at night or during the day. But that just shows how good it is! Everyone likes it. In a small counter-service stop in Mills 50, there lies the king of this place: Taiwanese bao buns. What is sparse in decor as soon as you walk in, makes up with big flavors in these light and spongy buns.
