This is one of two liquor stores within walking distance for me. The customer service here has always been spotty. It seems they like to hire shady introverts from time to time. No verbal interaction as I paid with cc. I called on day around thanksgiving to see wheb=n they were closing because sometimes holiday hours are different. The guy who answered the phone thought he was being edget and cool. He wouldn't tell me when they closed. Kepy mumbling that "We will close when we close. Surly sob. I have been going to this place off and on for the last year since I've moved here. Interactions are always so-so and the staff don't recognize you, but it's a liquor store and we've been wearing masks, so whatever. They will blatantly lie to your face about their stock if you're looking for something special. Went in recently, looked around and asked if they had any special bottles of anything, and they guy didn't even make eye contact with me, just mumbled, barely addressed me and stared off into space, it was honestly one of the strangest interactions I've had with someone in customer service, ever. I hop on the OLCC website the next morning because of how odd that interaction was, and sure enough, they actually did receive some nice stock and just lied about it. They seem to be holding it for their friends or holding it for employees, totally shady. With so many liquor stores in that area, you would think developing relationships with your locals and allowing them to buy nice things from you would be a priority of a business like this. read more

Good people if you have some questions about buying something just wrap with the employees let them know what you like and if they don't have that they have good suggestions for you. Be open minded as they might have you pegged as a consumer of what they suggest more than you realized. Just take it home sip on it and then after a few drinks say "damn this is goooood!!" The staff here really know their stuff. Most people come in, get a bottle, and leave, but if you actually asked them about their products they'd have a run down of pretty much everything sold. Maybe they're alcoholics, or maybe they got the job because they wanted to be sommeliers, but either way I really appreciated the help picking some unique bourbons and tequila's out. Full disclosure: I'm Canadian, and this is literally the only place I stopped in to get liquor during my trip. I have absolutely no clue how the prices/selection here stack up against other stores in Portland, but I know compared to Vancouver BC Canada they do really well. read more

Small, unassuming liquor store with a decent selection and fair prices. The parking can be tough, but it's manageable if you're stopping by when it's not rush hour, or a weekend and peak times. The customer service has always been good. Really there is nothing to complain about, but at the same time nothing to write home about. If I lived in that part of town, I would probably be a regular for spirits (don't come here looking for your favorite craft beer), but since I'm really interested in selection and new offerings, I almost always make the trek to total wine. The only real downsides are the weird parking and the limited selection of beers and wines. They do have some top shelf spirits, but you're better off going elsewhere for something like that if you're spending alot of money for something special. read more

I have what is known as "Malculay Culkin Face." You know, where you don't really age, but you look like an 8-year-old with poor sleeping habits who has just had an allergic reaction to shellfish. Because of this I'm often asked to provide proof of age when purchasing age restricted products like alcohol and spray paint. At the liquor store on MLK, I am asked for identification, but I am asked nicely. They say, "May I see your ID, please?" When I hand them my ID, they say, "Thank you." After the transaction is complete and I say, "Thank you," they say "Oh, you are so welcome." WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE? Where is the air of disdain and thinly veiled contempt I have come to expect from liquor store employees? I thought it was an OLCC regulation that you must blithely toss change in the general direction of your customer? But you just counted it back to me and put in my hand. One time, the lady behind the counter asked me if I had a nice weekend. Is this a liquor store or a finishing school? Since my love of booze is rivaled only by my love of manners, I'm willing to overlook the limited selection and God-awful parking. If you live in the neighborhood and need to replenish your liquor cabinet with the basics, I can pretty much guarantee you won't be metaphorically punched in the throat with rudeness. read more

Visited Portland from Vancouver, BC and found the selection and service here exceptional. It could just be that I'm used to running in and out of a liquor store for standard vodka so really enjoyed the recommendations to make some yummy cocktails with liquor that I would never think of buying. Took it back to the hotel and it was a great start to my first night in Portland! read more

What a horrible place -- more like I imagine a prison commissary to be than a store that treats its customers like they're free to shop elsewhere. Iron bars prohibit you from touching any of the merchandise; dead-eyed hostility greets you from behind the distant counter. And the prices are bad, too. If you like to be treated like a human being, shop elsewhere. read more

Screw everyone and there holier than thou view on "prison bars" inside of this liquor store. Every time I have purchased alcohol from this business I have been treated with the upmost respect, and been encouraged to return. The workers are fantastic!!! Very friendly and easy to gage in conversation. I don't ask for much in life... all I ask for is gin, and good service, and they have both. read more
