Dropped in for a drink on our last night in The City. We were doing a Hotel Bar Hop. We'd already been at The Peninsula, Plaza, Mark and Ritz Carlton. She was sampling the Paper Plane and I was sampling the Old Fashioned. So, she asks how his night is going. He says he's on eleven. She says on what. He says meth. The entire time this guy has been in the bar, bartenders were high fiving him - reason we thought he might be known. Apparently not. So my wife gets up and tells the team at the door what's going on. King Cole is located inside the St. Regis but open to everyone. The service here and specifically our server was really good. I ordered fries and the pita/hummus dish. Both were so good and the pita was so fresh. It also comes with dolma/grape leaves and olives. The fries came in a large portion as well. However the prices here are way too high even though it's in the st Regis. Not sure I'd come back for that reason alone. read more

Incredible. The Maxifield Parrish mural is what drew us in. It was the ambiance and service which kept us there. We were there during UN week, and the place was packed with dignitaries from around the world mixed with tourists such as us. While we're nervous about the crowd, we only waited a few minutes for the staff to clear a table of some slow, non-drinking patrons. Fantastic service, made us feel like regulars. The drinks were amazing - well mixed and creative. I will say, for us, only a couple drinks were in the budget, but it was worth the experience. Recommend checking out other parts of the Regis downstairs - really nice displays about the history of the property. read more

I went to King Cole Bar with a friend before dinner nearby. The bar is in the St. Regis, and is very "Old New York." There is a famed Max Parrish mural behind the bar. The space is wide but small, with booth seating around the perimeter, a bar in the back, and some high top tables in the middle. We were seated promptly without a wait. The service was fair. We were given snacks immediately, which was nice. There was a long period where our server didn't return to our table, but continued to serve those around us -- this was a little annoying. The drinks here are, on their face, expensive. I got the Harry's Texas Bloody Mary ($27), and my friend got a martini ($28). The drinks, while expensive, are really really large and probably equal to at least 1.5, if not 2, drinks at an equivalent place, so the price wasn't that much of an issue. My experience at King Cole Bar was fine. It is a beautiful space, but is probably not the vibe I typically go for. I do think that if you're looking for this type of monied, Old New York style place, this isn't a bad spot to hit. read more

If you're looking for the quintessential NYC bar to go to after work or for a power meeting (we still do those, right? No?), this is the place. Steeped in history, the birthplace of the Red Snapper (bloody mary) has a recently restored showpiece mural by Maxfield Parrish that also provides the name. Service was excellent, drinks refined and appropriately stiff, and the vibe is polished. There are other good bars to frequent but I like this one, especially if trying to impress someone with solid offerings that don't rely on smoke, infusions, or fancy add ons. ;-) read more

This is a classy place to sit with a friend or two and enjoy a cocktail. The bar attracts a mix of colorful locals as well as hotel guests. If the inner bar with the mural is busy, you can sit in the Astor Court just outside, which opens up the seating options quite a bit. Although perhaps not quite as Insta-famous, the Astor Court area is very pretty and is quieter than the main bar, with a very upscale vibe. The cocktail list includes several specialty drinks, such as the Jazz Me Blues (recommended), or any old standard that you prefer. They also serve a full snack and dinner bar menu (ie popcorn or a burger and fries) if you want something more substantial. If you feel like having drinks and dessert, they make their own cookies and brownies in house. The ice cream sundae includes little chunks of brownie and is quite good! read more

I wanted to like this place. I love hotel bars. And I love the St. Regis, but it just wasn't, as the youths like to say, giving, We arrived around 7:30 PM. The entrance to the bar is slightly past the hotel entrance on Fifth Avenue. You enter, go up some stairs circle around what appears like a dining room, and on the other side is the entrance to the bar. There was a bit of a wait, but not more than 10 minutes. We chose the seats by the door because everywhere else was full. My friend's chair kept getting buffeted by the door, but there wasn't much we could do about it. There was jazz playing but the bar is so incredibly loud, you can barely hear it. The clientele is unfortunately the midtown crowd, which was a huge drag, which makes sense given the location and price point, but utterly ruins the ambience of this bar. I order a glass of sparkling wine, which we got promptly and then our waiter disappeared for about an hour during which we were unable to flag anyone down. When we ordered another round, the food and drinks came promptly, but it was becoming a chore to find someone to order with. Next time I'd suggest sitting at the bar to avoid this issue. We stayed til closing. The clientele did not improve, but the crowd did thin out. I ordered the samosas, which were standard and delicious. read more

This is, very likely, my last review ever. And how appropriate it's what is essentially my favorite place in New York, and my spirit animal bar. I'm typically trying to be helpful with my reviews, so the upshot is that I think you know what this bar is, and why it's so special. If you want to sit at the bar, try to be there by 4.30p, at least. By 5p it may be full. Come looking like someone sophisticated. They're a business casual "at very least" dress code, but there were locals and tourists in non-collared shirts, or people a bit disheveled from walking around the city, etc. Just carry yourself with a bit of class for a bar this special. Is it special because Salvador Dali loved it and made it his home (as well as a room at the St. Regis), and met Alejandro Jodorowsky in discussion of his failed "Dune" picture there? Or that Marilyn Monroe, or John Lennon frequented it? No. Well, yes. But... Is it the barkeeps, dignified, storied, classic, hilarious, friendly, and charming? YES.. but, also... It's about Maxfield Parrish, his Old King Cole mural... which is beautiful, glorious, restored, one of the most important works of art NOT in the Met, and rumored to be worth $100 Million in 2023 after the beautiful restoration... and the fact that it is, wholly, about a fart. It's the only mural in the world dedicated to a person passing gas, and it's a marvel to look at. I had to remain calm, with my martini and joy. It's a classic spot to meet classic friends for classic times and to acquaint with new classic people. We had wonderful chats with the barkeeps, with the customers, and the palpable sense of joy, belonging, calm, and community. It is something to savor, in a place that has lost the 21 Club, and other historic gems. If I were a NYer, this place would be my home, followed by Minetta's and Comedy Cellar. Make this your haunt. It's a world famous gem, and there's nothing more regal and absurdly delightful in the city, at least to me. Now... why am I retiring from reviewing? I am freeing my humanity and time... no more reviewing, no more answering surveys, rating phone calls, telling people how my experience was, telling people why I unsubbed, giving "a few seconds of my time" or rating whether something was helpful. Such a classy atmosphere and the people are friendly at the same time! The woman at the door checked to see if there was room for my friend and I and luckily we were able to get in. The waiters are knowledgeable and so friendly. They also give you a little bowl of assorted nuts/crackers to munch on which were so tasty. I couldn't have just one haha. We ended up conversing with the gentleman that was sitting right next to us, everyone was super friendly and the patrons were no exception. I am shocked to see that I last reviewed King Cole Bar in 2008! I was a lot younger, not to mention poorer, but having a taste for the finer things in life has always been in my DNA. The bar snacks may no longer contain macadamias (sad) and the crowd is much more robust (I cannot remember it ever being difficult to get seating here all those years ago but on my two recent visits, the place was packed), but it is a solid choice for a bougie hotel cocktail experience. Especially during the holiday season when it's all festive up in here (possibly the reason it's very crowded, too). They have an entire Bloody Mary menu, being that the St. Regis is allegedly where the Bloody Mary (née Red Snapper) was created. I went for the Italian version which is tasty but I'm not sure if I appreciated all the olive oil, which meant for a far too unctuous drinking experience. It's a 25 dollar Bloody Mary and while tasty, I've had better at divey bars in New Orleans. True story. That said, I absolutely love the experience of being in this bar, so it's worth it. Awww! This restaurant left a huge impression in my heart! How sweet! My server is such a good man! I only ordered shrimp cocktail ( probably the most expensive shrimp cocktail I ever had $40 for 5pcs. ) and a glass of martini. Upon waiting, they served me three different kinds of bread ( it's so delicious). As soon as I took a sip of my martini, I didn't liked it. It tasted too salty than my liking so I asked him if he can fixed it! He quickly took care of it and brought me a new glass of martini. I heard so much about the bloody mary's here that I decided to try some but they were a huge disappointment. Each one was $27 which is a ridiculous price to pay for them. The drinks had almost no flavor to them, but at that price I wasn't going to waste any of it. There was also none of the usual garnishes that bloody mary's come with which is half of the fun of them. It also took us over 30 minutes to get out check while trying to get a workers attention, there were almost never any workers around and when you saw one walking by they wouldn't even glance anywhere around them.
