I watched her scratch her head and pat her scarf like she had just rolled out of bed! She intentionally avoided even looking toward the register, and seeing as how there's a bell on the door, I'm sure she knew I was there! Anyway, she finally, but slowly saunters toward the front, but stops at the girl making a sandwich to ask, "is she waiting for something?" I'M WAITING FOR YOU, GIRL!!!! WTF!!! I started to leave right then, especially after she looked dead at me, before asking the other girl was I waiting for something! She walks up "are you ready to order?" I started to leave again, because who greets a customer like that?! I said, "HI. GOOD MORNING." She stared at me like "I already greeted you when I asked if you were ready to order." At this point, her sour demeanor and nasty unprofessionalism have taken my mood from pleasant to irritated. As I stared at the menu with no prices. I asked what types of cream cheese they had. The other girl from backstage happened to be walking by the cash register and she points to a print out. With all the thousands of overhead, up top, beneath, and side menus, text, words, fonts, and colors everywhere I had missed it. The girl standing there like I interrupted her nap, says "Yea it's right there, I didn't realize you couldn't see it." SMART ASS!!! I said, I'll get the garlic & herb on a spinach bagel. She rings it up. It says sun-dried tomato cream cheese on the small screen, I ask her if that's a mistake or if it rings up that way? (I am allergic to tomato, so I MUST ASK.) She says nothing, but instead prints out the ticket, where she shows me her note at the bottom, "sub garlic & herb" she then says "I heard what you said, you're right here, I just had to ring it up that way because there's no button for garlic&herb." I tell her that it didn't show her note on the payment screen, so I just wanted to make sure. Her attitude is literally making me sick!!! It's so unneccsarily sarcastic and nasty for no reason!! If I wasn't hungry and on a time crunch, I would've found another, cleaner, more pleasant and professional place to get a bagel. I spent over $10 on a meat-less bagel with less than a spoonful of cream cheese. smh. If I owned this place, I would do a complete renovation, deep clean, and fire the entire team and rehire people that will at least have some sense of customer service, professionalism, and sanitary food handling skills. I won't be back, which is a shame, because that was a damn good bagel.

Well, we were even more surprised when we stepped in the door - nothing had changed! Cleaner, perhaps new Naugahyde on the seats, but that mural on the wall was the same - those elves were timeless. When you sit down, you get a small paper cup of water. The menus are on the the wall - soups, sandwiches & ice cream. I'd always heard they had a patent on the way their cheeseburgers were made - a burger topped with crispy cheese. A must have. Prior to Covid, the condiments tray had ketchup, mustard & chopped onions. Now, there are packets of the condiments. No onions though. We shared an order of fries - crispy & good. I was too full to have ice cream after our meal, so we brought a half gallon (yes - a real half gallon) of our favorite flavor home - chocolate almond joy. Yum! Note - you need cash. No cards. The atmosphere is a 50's style ice cream restaurant that also serves food. There are some tables. Some counter seats. Workers in old timey outfits. Definitely an old school vibe that they pull off. Service was friendly. I visited with two goals. Try a hot dog. And eat an Original Bernice Winged Cheeseburger. Probably the most famous burger in CT. SG uses CT's Grote & Weigel hot dogs. They split and grill them. They served mine sort of sandwich style on a long bun with a toothpick in the middle. Definitely an original presentation. They have no specialty dogs beyond the crispy cheese they also serve on the burgers. They do give you quality packets of relish, mustard and ketchup and a small container of chopped onions. I added all these ingredients. And it was a tasty dog. The Original Bernice Winged Cheeseburger arrived, looking like a monarch, sitting on a throne of crinkle cut French Fries. The crispy cheese design, with all those angles extending from the bun, is an engineering marvel. There is melty cheese too. The burger looked about like a quarter pound. Tasted good. I added lettuce and tomato. Both fresh. A one of a kind burger that has thrilled people for Decades. The fries were fine. The Cole Slaw, however, was top tier. There was more than just thin chopped cabbage. Kale maybe. Some other stuff. The dressing was tasty, and the slaw wasn't overly dressed. Shady Glen is a CT classic. Indeed, an American Classic according to James Beard. Who can argue with that? 4.25 Stars

Having to loop back to all the previous spots, I really remember this place being very good and my rose-tinted glasses held on hope that maybe my experience from my last try was just a fluke. Server was nice, attentive and pleasant. Food came out after a short delay. Got my pics and took my bites. This last time was...lackluster. The egg was oily, the corned beef hash was bland and texture less. It very much reminded me of canned hash with some potatoes thrown in for good measure. And the hash brown potatoes were lightly seasoned and barely crispy. As a breakfast place, this is fine if you want a quantity of okay food. I'm not sure I will ever try them again, but I hope they improve at some point.
