It showed up at a back-to-school picnic for my son's pre-school, and the ice cream was a real treat on a hot summer afternoon. The woman at the window was both friendly and efficient, and my son could not have been happier with his chocolate ice cream with rainbow sprinkles. My husband and I shared a cup of vanilla, as well as some of our kid's melty chocolate leftovers (he's three and eats worrisomely little, even when it's chocolate ice cream). This ice cream truck was a nice surprise for my company sponsored event. They aren't your typical ice cream trucks that only have popsicles and ice cream cones. They have blenders and snow cone machines which allows them to expand their menu. The truck is pretty small, but they offer a huge variety. They have your normal cones but they also have snow cones, sundaes, root beer floats, Malts/milk shakes. I ordered an Oreo Malt and I would have to say it wasn't bad at all. I asked for it to not have whipped cream or a cherry but they gave to me. It was probably on accident since people behind me ordered Oreo Malts and just mass produced it. The Oreo Malt didn't have much Oreo flavor and it just tasted sweet to me. I also ordered a Strawberry shaved ice, I probably should have picked a different flavor because the Strawberry flavor wasn't that strong. Maybe I should have gotten Sour Green Apple. Soft serve was smooth, rich, and creamy. Loved the toppings, though the majority of the almonds/coconut fell off since they did not stick well to the chocolate. For this catered event, we were each given multiple tickets to exchange for any items of our choosing. I also tried 2 different flavors of MILKSHAKES. Did not enjoy the strawberry milkshake because the flavor was weak. The Oreo milkshake was much better because it was very chocolatey. Service was friendly and efficient. Had their truck for a work event and it was pretty good! The truck really catches your eye with it's retro-kitchy look and feel. Peanuts, Oreo, sprinkles, choco chip are some of the toppings. It kind of reminded me of the Big Gay Ice Cream truck without as many elaborate creations. The soft serve is better than McDonald's and on par with Dairy Queen which I newly discovered is a fantastic soft serve cone. The thing I really liked is how generous they were with the toppings. I didn't have enough of an appetite for one of their awesome looking signature King Kones, but still I had been a good boy all day and was going to treat myself to one of their desserts. After careful deliberation I went with the KooKoo for Kokonut Kone and I loved the dipped chocolate with the shaved coconut, and finished that off first. At that point, the dessert became a bit mediocre; just plain vanilla soft-serve in an industrial style Styrofoam Cone. But let's talk about the positives, the dip was nothing like you would expect at DQ or B-R, it was more of a taffy-type chocolate. It had all the necessary adhesive qualities an ice cream shell needs, but was chewy and flavorful at the same time. The coconut was a nice touch, but I wish there was a way to incorporate it into the soft-serve so it would still be there after the shell is gone. That might be impossible though. If the King is reading this, I would like to offer a suggestion though, not as a criticism but perhaps as what the Cajuns call a Lagniappe; a little something extra. Is it possible to put a spoonful or so of the chocolate at the bottom of the Kone? The folks who make Drumsticks do that basically so the ice Cream doesn't leak out the bottom during manufacture in shipping to the stores. Now your Kone is plenty sturdy, and you don't need to add that extra shell for function, but wouldn't it be nice if the very last bite was some of the sweet chocolate goodness instead of the blandness equivalent of a Kone bottom. The King Kone truck came to our work campus today for an end of summer afternoon treat. Thought the line would be short, but not quite. We waited in line for 30 minutes to place our order. I decided on the mini banana split ($5) and specified only strawberry and chocolate syrup. The guy who took my order even repeated my order back to me. And what I got instead was a banana split with strawberry and caramel sauce. Who orders a strange combo like that anyway? Why didn't I notice and take it back you ask? It was because I didn't notice and didn't eat it until I got back to my desk since I had to carry my mini banana split and an Avalanche for a friend back to the office. And the walk back to the King Kone truck was a long trek back and by the time I would get back to the truck, the soft serve ice cream used in the mini split would be all melted. Messing up on my order aside, I didn't think my mini banana split was all that. The slivered almonds on top of the split tasted like it wasn't fresh. And the serving size was mini and definitely wasn't worth $5. I'd rather go to Foster's Freeze than going back to King Kone. King Kone truck I'll definitely pass up next time around. read more

I was ready for a sweet treat this afternoon and this truck was parked two blocks from work. I zipped over and ordered a caramel sundae. Quick service! The soft serve vanilla ice cream was okay. The menu includes soft serve ice cream (in a cup or cone), sundaes, milk shakes, shaved ice, banana splits, etc. The truck moves around Santa Monica, but it seems to regularly park during lunch hours on 31st street just behind the Art Institute of California - Los Angeles on Monday and Tuesday. Sometimes it shows up on Friday. If you want to locate the truck, the owner has taken a page from the Kogi BBQ folks and started a Twitter account (kingkonela), although he doesn't seem to update every day. You can probably call to find out where it is. The reason I know about King Kone is I work in the nearby business park, and on occasion enjoy having a freshly made dessert that's walking distance upon returning from lunch. I haven't sampled the actual King Kone ice cream cone for which the truck is named, but I typically get a soft serve ice cream with a random topping of my choice. The ice cream is tasty, and the price is very reasonable. Presentation is also top-notch, the best I have had in terms of ice cream produced from a moving vehicle. You can customize your order, choosing flavors/toppings as you please. The owner is very nice and seems willing to accommodate any request. I wouldn't necessarily drive out of my way to find this truck, but if it comes to you, and you're in the mood for dessert, it's worth sampling. "I like it but it's nothing like the ones we had in Kauai" Once again this is the first impression from my 10 year old daughter who is my sous chef, budding food truck groupie and future yelper of all things edible after the first bite of her shave ice at the Valley Food Truck Festival. It's really hard to rate free food! This truck was at the Komodo Launch Party Elite Event, where I got to try its offerings. Who doesn't love the ice cream truck? This one offered 4 varieties: a chocolate-mint shake, the s'more shake (with toasted marshmallows), the ice cream sandwich, and the strawberry shortcake cone. Prices all looked to be around $3 or $3.50 in normal cases. I ordered the cone, although the others looked very tempting (the mint shake supposedly was blended with chocolate chips and Andes bars, yum!) The ice cream sandwich reminded me of a tricked-out Diddy Riese, your usual ice cream between 2 chocolate chip cookies, and rolled in Oreo. My cone was sweet, creamy, vanilla soft serve rolled in strawberry shortcake pieces that almost looked like sand, but tasted soooo good. Although delicious and something I'd be excited to see on a hot summer day, just like a kid, I'd have to say it was nothing TOO special. It was good soft serve, but it was still soft serve for over $3 a pop. I also didn't like that they used the tasteless, generic ice cream cones instead of something fancier for a gourmet truck. Maybe they were keeping it retro, but for something that expensive, a better quality or more special cone would be nice. I was prepared to order simple vanilla cone when I saw that the menu offered all kinds of cool ways to get soft serve.... Now I needed a new game plan. The chocolate could've been more chocolatey, but it was still good, and I like that it didn't harden into a crunchy shell. It's a nice change from the Frosty Queen days when me and my little bro would race to lick the chocolate off the ice cream before it solidified. If only we had the King Kone Truck then, we wouldn't have had to work so hard. If they happen to be in the area, I'd happily visit again. But at these prices, I'm not about to chase them down....
