Had a fabulous Father's Day brunch at King Ranch Texas Kitchen. Also visited on Christmas Day. The staff is really great... friendly & pro-active... just all around really great service! The food is excellent as well. Both visits we had the buffet which is *I think* only certain days of the year. Lots of choices: breakfast, texmex, seafood, a carving station, bbq + great desserts. We went there on Christmas and the food was outstanding. The drinks were good as well. The salads were so good. The only thing that's not good was they don't split the checks which is awful. I went here with a group of 7 for a birthday dinner recently, and we all enjoyed different aspects of the meal but there is definitely room for improvement with this restaurant. The ambiance is nice, it's casual with dark wood and leather interior, however it is very loud making conversation a bit difficult. We started with the bread basket, the brisket queso and guacamole. I definitely recommend the bread basket, all the varieties of bread were delicious and I loved the sweet butter. The brisket queso was tasty but a bit on the salty side and the guacamole was good and fresh. Myself and one other ordered the kingsville chicken with a side of green beans. While the chicken was very flavorful and a huge portion, it once again was a bit salty and the green beans, while having good flavor, were extremely salty. Our waiter was very nice throughout the meal but the service here was extremely slow. It appeared they were short staffed but even as it got later and the restaurant cleared we were still searching for someone to help us out. I do think this is a great casual spot in the area, and due to the loud atmosphere, somewhere you can bring kids, but will not be one of my top choices. read more

My husband and I live one hour outside of downtown Houston... We were in the galleria mall area today and passed by the restaurant and thought, based on the location and the exterior appearance and the presentation of the website ...This place has to be great. I could not have been more wrong! To begin with what should have been about a 30 to 40 minute meal turned into an hour and a half, the table behind us kept having issue after issue after issue so our server was constantly running around, taking care of them, and we were basically ignored once we got our food, which was subpar to say the least my husband got a $41 ribeye that was so chewy, tender but chewy like wet shoe leather you almost could not break it down chewing it to swallow it. Thank goodness I got just a baked potato you can't mess that up too much so that was fine. We finally were able to get our servers attention to take care of our check.. and that was another 15 to 20 minute experience just to get our check because he was busy tending to tables that just arrived and taking their order and of course, it was another 15 to 20 minutes just to receive a check and credit card back. We have been home about 30 minutes now and we're starting to be concerned that my husband may have food poisoning ....the whole drive home he was feeling more and more sick with his stomach distended and in a lot of pain with severe cramps. we are home. I have given him some thing to hopefully help however as of now he feels extremely ill. I've got him relaxing, trying to help his body to digest his food. He's nauseous and feels ill and I just felt like I had to get on right away to say something. It's really a shame that a place in this location where there are many good restaurants close by leaves you with the feeling that you made the worst choice you've ever made for dinner ! I met a friend for lunch and we both had burgers. I'm not sure why they ask you how you want it cooked because the the burger is two thinner beef patties rather than one thicker one. The burger itself was tasty. However, the sheer amount of shredded lettuce kind of overpowered the taste of everything. The seven spice fries were very plain tasting. Good thing I had the barbecue sauce to dip them in for flavor. For $16 there are better burgers to be had elsewhere. read more

King Ranch Texas kitchen for a Houston Restaurant Week brunch was disappointing when it came to the main meal. Queso was very good. Husband got the steak soup, which was flavorful. Both very small portions, we thought was acceptable for an appetizer. We both got the shrimp and grits and laughed. It was so small and felt like an appetizer, definitely just a "sample." It was no more than 3 spoons of grits, with a few shrimp. Definitely not a meal. The dessert bourbon bread pudding was our favorite part. Would give the restaurant another try though for a main meal but don't have high expectations for Houston Restaurant Week. read more

Rolling out a new restaurant concept in the middle of a pandemic was a risk that may pay off in the future. We selected King Ranch Texas Kitchen (KRTK) for a venue to meet some good friends whom we hadn't dined with in over a year as our first occasion to come out from the cloud of the pandemic and dine in public. I'm willing to temper my criticism of our evening with the pandemic pass. Retaining attentive and respectful staff on board when business has been nearly non-existent for the past 14 months has been challenging for restaurant management. The hiring process at KRTK has apparently been willing to adopt breathing as the sole criteria for hiring waitstaff. This is not to cast aspersions on everyone who holds a job at this restaurant in a difficult time but our waitperson was far from capable to be able to provide an enjoyable dining experience in any circumstance. King Ranch seems to have modeled itself on a hybrid of other Landy's restaurants, namely Saltgrass and Vic and Anthony's. There are items on the menu clearly gleaned from V&A-the superb crab cakes and the high-end beef offerings, just as there are items that one would expect to find at Saltgrass. The array of sandwiches, the chili offering and the mish-mosh of Texican, purportedly chuck wagon inspired, enchilada and assorted dishes are far down the scale of taste and quality from other upscale Landry's restaurants. I think that the dearth of business over the past year has kept Landry's from putting a swift end to KRTK. With pandemic restrictions lifting and most people feeling more confident about going out, my thinking is that with increased traffic, Landry's management will come to understand that folks just don't care to dine at an establishment that can't seem to decide what it is or to whom it caters. Additional time may result in the hiring of more amenable waitstaff but until the identity crisis resolves itself, the concept will continue to flounder. read more
