no bicycles, no backpacks, no people there

No backpacks allowed. - This was my first time at King Wah. Following a great dinner at NoHo's Hawaiian Teriyaki, I decided to take the server's recommendation to get a drink at King Wah. I love a good dive bar. I love karaoke. I love cheap drinks. I despise poorly thought out policies however. I wasn't allowed in the bar because I had something called a "backpack." I said to the employee, "Oh you mean this rucksack, book bag, knapsack, or packsack? I refuse to call this a backpack as I can easily wear it on my front side." After asking why I couldn't have my leftover dinner and rain jacket in a bag with straps, I was told "it's not my policy." Okay, but I asked why, not who's policy it was. Sadly I was asked to leave due to my threatening Jansport that allowed me to carry items without using my hands while my car is in the shop and a long walk ahead on a rainy night. I encourage King Wah to expand their ban of backpacks to include fanny packs, wheelchairs, wheelbarrows, riding lawn mowers, and donkeys that bring baby Jesus gifts.

Combination dinners. Prices too. Not very reasonable.

I do not recommend this place! Very rude employees, people selling drugs, wont redeem video lottery winnings. A dive!

From the moment we walked in we were treated like valued customers. Our server seated up promptly,…read moretook our drink order, followed up for our meal, refilled our drinks without being asked. The ambiance, was classic pub throughout, and we enjoyed this quite a bit having just returned from Ireland few weeks ago. The food was properly done though I felt that the chowder, which was delicious, was a bit tepid and could have been a bit warmer.

We started with the deep-fried pickles, which were a letdown. They tasted like basic bottled pickle slices lightly dipped in flour with minimal seasoning--nothing special. Dinner didn't improve much. The menu items sound really appealing, but once they arrived, the flavors were bland. We ordered the Irish stew, and the meat was very tough. Tried cutting it in really small pieces so I could chew it, but it wasn't worth the effort. Had a few pieces with gristle and fat. I ended up picking the meat out and just eating the carrots and potatoes. We also tried the famous meatloaf, which was the highlight of the meal. I enjoyed it, though the portion could have been a bit larger. The gravy was tasty, and it came with peas and mashed potatoes. Overall, while the service and atmosphere were great, the dishes lacked flavor and felt overpriced for what was served.

GREAT PLACE FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS. This place is known both…read moreas the Butterfly Club and Bugsy's Steak House. The names have to do with the special ambiance and experience. You HAVE to make a reservation or you don't get through the door. The door actually takes you into a barbershop at Tinseltown and then (with a password) behind it, recreating a speakeasy experience from the days of Prohibition. And they ask you to dress up--no jeans. That's kind of fun, but it's really all about the food. INCREDIBLE FOOD. Four of us had 2 different beef steaks, rack of lamb and swordfish steak. ALL done perfectly and tasty, as well as various sides. No one regretted their choices. The service was impeccable--attentive but not intrusive. And then there were the deserts: the four of us shared 3 different deserts and all were to die for. I'm a longtime baker with varied experience here and in Europe and never had better deserts anywhere. Not a place for kids--no one under 21. Mocktails as well as wine and. cocktails. And fairly expensive but well worth it--we were celebrating a birthday and when they found out delivered the deserts with a huge wonderful sparkler. They have special event nights with live music and they also have burlesque nights--so ask. But you can go to just relax, enjoy and eat well.
