In line with the idea of you get what you paid for, I recently tried King Wok 47 and I can say I was disappointed, but not really disappointed because I kind of expected it to not be good. However, I didn't think it was going to be this bad. King Wok 47 is essentially a take out only spot. They have a storefront is a strip mall in Sugar Grove, but once you walk in you realize this is literally a take out window with two booths that look like they haven't been used for dining in some time. The menu is filled with traditional brown sauce Chinese food. The type of food that was known to be Chinese food in this country, before the advent of really good Chinese restaurants from Taipei and Hong Kong opening up stateside. Brown sauce means orange chicken (albeit that is trademarked by Panda Express), egg fu young, yang chow fried rice and egg rolls. I ordered the house combination fried rice or typically known as yang chow fried rice and the shrimp egg rolls. The order took no time to get ready and it shouldn't. The combination fried rice was unfortunately flavorless, lacking even soy sauce. It was also lacking of protein. There was some chicken, more beef, but very little shrimp and if the size of the order was more appropriately portioned, then it wouldn't have seemed so obvious, but because the rice filled the entire takeout container, then it made it seem like it was just rice and not really any protein. However, the cardinal sin was there just wasn't any flavor to the dish. Even with adding my own soy sauce and sweet and sour sauce, there still wasn't much flavor to this dish. The other item I ordered was the shrimp egg rolls and like the fried rice, it was seriously lacking in flavor and protein. It seems like this restaurant uses micro or mini shrimps for their protein and fills the rest in with filler or cabbage. Overall, it wasn't a good experience and while I understood what I was getting myself into, it still came in way below expectations. read more

I got an egg roll, a shrimp egg roll, fried chicken wings, and hong sue chicken, thinking to get two meals out of it - which I did. Everything was inexpensive but, although the ingredients seemed fine in terms of quality and freshness, everything was bland - not bad, just weak in flavor. The portions were good but I'd have preferred the hong sue chicken to be stir fried rather than battered and fried. I'll try the mala chicken and black bean chicken next - both should, by their nature, be more flavorful. read more

I've grown up in this area, and my family have always been loyal customers. The food is great, and they always kept the recipes the same. My personal favorite being the pork dumplings, decadently hand made with a beautiful crimping. However, they have replaced their handmade dumplings with cheap freezer potstickers, and my heart was broken. I think about those dumplings at least once a day. Sad. I tried their food several years ago and was not impressed. After a neighbor insisted their food was very good, fresh, and not filled with a bunch of filler sauce, I thought I'd try again. Let's just say I've ordered dinner three times now in the past 6 weeks. I think their chicken and vegetables, beef lo mein and shrimp egg rolls are the bomb! I always do pickup here and the food is ready quickly when placing an order over the phone. The inside is not very well lit, and everything feels sticky. A couple booths available but the kitchen is fairly loud. Personally, it's not the type of place I'd want to dine in at. The food is good and I've never had an issue, but I've also never sat inside while they're cooking it. After reading some of these other reviews, I might pay better attention to the kitchen cleanliness next time I go in. Based on the recommendation of a trusted neighbor, we decided to give King Wok 47 a try. Though there are closer chinese carryout places for us, they have been largely mediocre. Have to say, our neighbor has been accurate in their recommendation. We have ordered now from there about a half dozen times, and I've been pleased with their food. Their eggrolls have consistently been crispy, even after a 10-15 minute car ride. I enjoy their hot sour soup, as it is flavorful(spicy), has good texture and alot of veggies. I have also enjoyed their entries, when they say spicy, they mean it. Additionally, they are reasonably priced and never had to wait over 20 minutes. If I had any complaint, I wish there were better descriptions of their menu options. read more

The food and the service was ok, however the tables were very sticky from the grease buildup over time, I would not recommend this for dinning in, works ok for carry out. Prices are decent and economical for a quick alternative to the fast food options in sugar grove. read more

I had the stomach flu, so I bought pedialyte at the Jewell-Osco next door. Then, I bought plain white rice at this restaurant. My total was $1.08 and I was out in under 2 minutes. I felt better the next day. There are 3 booths here and one table, so up to 16 people can dine-in at the same time. The photo of the egg foo young looked good, even in my digestively addled state. read more

My experience was horrible I ordered my food the cashier did not ask if I was dining in or carryout. I had to ask for a plate to sit down and eat my meal. I ordered the seafood delight which was supposed to include lobster meat, scallop, jumbo shrimp, and crab meat, sauteed with vegetables. The food was very bland. They wanted an additional $3.00 to switch to fried rice. There was no lobster and they used imitation crab. When I asked about the missing ingredients I was told that they had no lobster because their vendor did not have fresh product and its been like that for 6 months. As for the crab meat she just said that that is what they have always used. She refused to refund my money but offered me 2 egg rolls instead. That was insulting how do egg rolls replace missing seafood. I agreed to let them remake it instead to see if I could at least get a more flavorful version of the dish. Instead of remaking it the dumped the food out of the container I had just given them back into the pan sprinkled some red pepper in it then put it back into the same container and gave it back to me. This is one of the WORST dining experiences I have ever had. I walked in yesterday and ordered the Orange Chicken lunch special. It came with fried rice and an egg roll. The kitchen is clearly visible from the "dining room" so I could see my food being reheated. Not COOKED, but REHEATED. The cook (Who's clothes were absolutely filthy) took a take-out container from the counter and dumped the fried rice in it into the wok. To refresh it. He dump something from a squirt bottle on it a few times. He then went to the restroom. As he headed back to the kitchen rubbing his nose with his bare hand he proceeded to reach into an unrefridgeraded container of what I assume was chicken and look at a few pieces of it. Luckily none of it made its way into my container. The women working the register then walked back and grabbed an egg roll from one fryer basket and dropped it into the one next to it and dropped it down into the grease. Did she wash her hands between the time she handled my money and grabbing my precooked room temp food with her bare hand? Nope. This place is a FILTY HOLE! I paid for the food, went home and threw it directly in the trash. I am shocked this place is still in business. read more

I like to visit an establishment at least a few times before leaving a review so King Wok 47 is about due for one. Good portions at reasonable prices. Customer service is top notch; the guy who takes the orders is really pleasant. Food is quickly prepared and served at a good temperature. The wonton soup is tasty and filled with wontons. Shrimp fried rice had a lot of tasty shrimp as well. They don't skimp on ingredients. Lunch special is a good deal. I've had the sweet and sour chicken a few times and crab rangoons. Cashier handles money and cash register, then goes to kitchen to slice steak and toss by hand into vegetables. 3 other customers witnessed this plus her defiance when I questioned whether she understood health code violations, hand washing and use of gloves. Really, really disappointing. We tried several dishes and all of the containers were filled with mostly onions. The beef chow mein was terrible, literally a box of onions with a few oddly skinny pieces of beef. The crispy noodles were some sort of cracker like material, nothing like crispy noodles we're used to. Big disappointment, we were hoping to have found a good Chinese food place in the area. Horrible service. They messed up my order and refused to even exchange it or offer a refund. They said that they cannot resell my dish to anyone else so they won't do anything to fix my issue. Then the lady starting blabbing nonsense saying that vegetables are good for you and totally unprofessional sales tactics, while completely regarding the issue at hand. I ordered the curry chicken lunch special. Service was fine, had no problems, however I noticed the kitchen is unclean (splatters all over the wall, clutter). The food was ok, minus some very important things. I was expecting some heat, especially with the crushed red pepper, but there was no heat whatsoever, which is kinda weird (immitation pepper??). Some pieces of chicken were definitely not fresh and tasted like they were starting to go. The mushrooms were not prime. I took a bite of a horsechestnut and my body rejected it immediately as it had most certainly gone bad. I've gone to all sorts of Chinese places, some that even served reheated food from the day before, but I've never had food that had actually gone bad. The health department should know about this, it is unacceptable. As for the egg roll and the white rice, they were fine. The white rice was probably the only good part about my meal. read more

I'm a little surprised by the average of 3 stars this has on here. We've ordered from them a handful of times now and have had nothing but delicious food each time. The fried rice is flavorful, unlike many others in the area. We also love their steamed dumplings, crab rangoons, orange chicken, sesame chicken, and Mongolian beef. The list could go on! The only couple things I think they could improve a bit would be their egg rolls (they're a tad greasy and not as flavorful as we'd like) and the amount of shrimp in their shrimp dishes. I would have liked to see more than 5 medium shrimp, even if it was the smaller size. Otherwise, we've been very happy with the food and they're always very polite when we pick up the order. read more

We started going to King 47 about a year ago. The food was ok...but just ok. It has been going down hill fast. Last night was the last straw....we ordered Singapore maifun for the hubby and i had steamed white chicken with brown cantonese sauce and steamed rice. The singapore maifun was dry tasted like it had been made the day before and reheated....my chicken tasted rancid and the cantonese sauce was vinegary. My stomach was rolling after eating a bit. I th hought their sweet and sour chicken was an option till I went in one day and there was a huge tub of already fried up chicken just sitting theere...then i watched the cook scoop up a serving and drop it in the oil for a couple minutes. Not even fresh cooked...makes you wonder how long it sits there and what do they do with whats left. We will never go back. We live in Hinckley so not many options out here...like everything else we'll have to go far to find good food. read more

My boyfriend and I called in an order for pick up earlier this afternoon. He specified to the man who answered the phone that we wanted to do the lunch specials. Oddly, the man did not ask us any other questions. He told us a price, said it would be ten minutes, and hung up. I thought this was odd, as the lunch special comes with a choice of soup or egg roll (I like hot and sour soup), and steamed or pork fried rice. When we got there to pick up our food, he informed us that our food comes with an egg roll unless we take it upon ourselves to specifically ask for soup; A fact I was unaware of, as we have always been asked our preference before and have ordered from here many times. He also took it upon himself to decide that we would both like pork fried rice with our meals. I would like to point out that I am a vegetarian and could not eat a large majority of my food, since both the rice and the egg roll that he so inconsiderately included contained meat. When I asked him about this, he pointed out that it was my mistake--I should have specified I wanted otherwise. I have to wonder how someone who has never ordered from there before and does not know their menu gets the food they actually want...? Not sure what happened with a previous reviewer getting ill but that has never happened with any of our families orders. I continue to order from this restaurant and have always been satisfied. They are friendly and quick. Most orders ready within 20 min for pick up. It's nice to not have to "settle" for good Chinese take out in a small town with not many restaurants to choose from. Decided to order something new. Got the "Dragon and Phonenix" A dish of (not) "jumbo" shrimp, vegetables, and general tso's chicken. The chicken oddly looked and tasted just like orange chicken...which just so happened to be the other dish we ordered. Clearly they didn't feel like making right thing. And of course who would know the difference until the costumers gets home and opens the containers. Not to mention the woman at the front desk is far from approachable. The Lunch Specials are bountiful and CHEAP at $ 4.95. All specials come with your choice of egg roll or soup and white or pork fried rice. I've never had a problem if I want extra sauce or veggie rice, in fact the last time I was in, they offered and made me a special sauce for my crab rangoon. (I'm not a fan of the cherry sauce that comes with it) The sesame chicken is out of this world great! Definately recommend. Real good bang for your buck. Just down from the Jewel store. read more
