There is a place that sells king size pastries. They say they are no kings in San Francisco. I seen a few kings in San Francisco. On Mission street there is the annual King of the Streets event and on the same block this event is held is a neighborhood staple for decades that sells bake goods and some pastries that are a hybrid of Chinese and Latin American flavors. Between 24th and 25th on Mission street you will find Kings Bakery. People of the neighborhood in the Mission come here for delicious sweet bread and pastries which are Chinese and Latin American. You will see pan dulce( sweet bread) which pairs well with coffee in the morning and throughout the day. There are plenty of different pan dulce like concha's and they also have cupcakes. This is also a good place to pick up pastries and cakes to celebrate Dia de Los Reyes ( The Three Kings Day) which is coming up in a few months. Kings Bakery is a good place to grab pastries for any occasion but the good stuff is usually available in the morning. We came across Kings Bakery while walking around the Mission and it had a constant stream of people going in and out. They make both traditional HK and Mexican pastries, which is pretty cool. You can find coconut buns, pineapple buns, french bread rolls, Mexican conchas, and a ton more, as well as a variety of cakes in the fridge section. It's self-serve, so you grab a tray, pick what you want, and check out when you're done. There's a couple small tables on the side of the bakery for you to sit and eat at. We tried the pineapple bun and a chocolate concha. I think the bolo topping could've been a little thicker and baked a little longer, but that's personal preference. Bun was a tad dry. Concha was similar -- dry bun and the topping was kind of powdery, so the mouthfeel was kind of unpleasant. Regardless, happy to support this little gem of a place that's been part of the community for generations. Seems like coconut buns are the thing to get, so I'll try that next time. read more

Their bread has always been delicious and I like that they now have different sizes of their baked rolls. Make sure that you know their schedule when they pull out their fresh baked rolls (I believe it's at 11 am and 4pm). While they've gotten a little pricey over the years, it's still one of their tastier baked rolls. Their Mexican bread is alright and they have some other pastries like sponge cakes with cream and berries that are especially delicious! It's a little hole in the wall, so don't let the look fool you. It's worth a look and one piece of bread is never enough. i love this place! Been coming here since i was a little girl with my grandma. We would come all the way from the east bay by 10:00 am to get their fresh rolls! Had a going away soirée for a co-worker and wanted to grab some Chinese pastries. I also didn't want to head all the way to Chinatown. Found Kings on Yelp and it hit the spot. Came by just to get some cheap sweet eats. I guess you can call it a Panaderia. It's self service, pick what you want, put it on your tray. I usually get the custard horn and this time I got the cut sponge cake (individually wrapped in plastic wrap), there's also one wrapped in Parchment paper. Quality wise it's a hit or miss. One day it's good but my last visit was meh. The custard horn that's sugar coated didn't taste up to par, it was lacking flavor. As for the sponge cake, it had a dry texture. Kings Bakery Cafe is known for their Coconut Buns but what really stand out are the Freshly Baked French Baguettes. Our group got to go to the back and watch the baker take the loaves out of the oven. It smelled heavenly! When we returned to the front of the shop a line was starting to form. They were waiting for those French Baguettes. The Coconut Bun was light and buttery and coconut-y (in the middle). The French Baguette was warm and so so satisfying to bite into. Definitely the type of bread to be best right out of the oven. We also tried the Chocolate Sponge Cake Roll. This place has been here for a long time. I have been going here since elementary school and would stop by here frequently on the way home from school, since the prices are cheap and the pastries and breads there are good. I recommend getting the bread fresh because it is the best when it is hot. It is just so good when you take a bite of that fresh yummy goodness and you get both the crunchiness and and the soft and warm inner texture of the bread. There are also other pastries that tastes good, like the round yellow ones and the ones with coconut on the inside and has sesame seeds on top. The only possible problem is that there is no signs as to what the pastries are. So, for people that are new visitors, you will either have to guess by appearance or ask what it is. The glass display case had whole cakes, cake slices (the strawberry cake slices looked good), pumpkin pie, etc. Everything seems really cheap and large. They must be known for their plain white rolls because the back of the bakery just had piles and piles of rolls. The place was crowded. * Plain Roll (30 cents roll): really good for such an inexpensive white roll, fresh, slightly crusty, good amount of chewiness, good density * Mocha cake roll (65 cents): didn't have much mocha flavor, filling was too sweet, cake was too dense, but you get a thick slice for less than you'd pay at your typical Chinese bakery * Bun with sesame seeds on top: I thought it was savory bun but it was filled with coconut (I don't like coconut) so I threw it away I agree with Marti L. that they should install plexi-glass doors or wrap their goods vs. leave them exposed to open air. What a really great find today: Bolobau and coconut buns in the Mission with Chinatown prices! Wicked, eh? I actually walked by this place at first, and did a 180. You grab a pizza tray, a pair of tongs, and select away, from the assortment, of baked nomminess, to your left! I grabbed a dozen baus, placed gently in your typical pink-box, and tied-up with green ribbon. Yummmm... coconut buns! King Bakery is located on the busy street of Mission, cross street is 25th. The store is squished between numerous restaurants, shops, taquerias, & grocery shops even. I've passed this bakery numerous times, but never tried out their goodies. It wasn't until I stumbled upon it's name on SF's Big Eat 7x7 list that the curiousity set in. It lists their coconut buns as a "must try" before you die. The buns are soft, filled w/ a yummy trio of what tastes like coconut, butter, & sugar. When served warm, it tastes oh so good! Imagine it with a cool, tall glass of refreshing milk. Sigh! As good as these buns taste, they cost only $0.50 each. Wow in price & taste! This place truly brings a smile to my face. It reminds me of being a little kid, waking up and having fresh pan dulce as my mom cooked us breakfast. Think - the latina version of June Cleaver . With a lot of latino establishments I feel I get a great product for a fair price. It's not tartine, but at tartine I feel the price of a meal whereas I can pay for my bread at a panaderia with change. Most things if not everything are under 75 cents. I regularly go here to pick up muffins and other forms of pan dulce in the morning before I go to the office. I don't know the name of the bread, but my friends and I call them Sugar Bread and Butter Bread. The Sugar bread is topped with you guessed it Sugar. And the Butter Bread is filled with something that taste like butter, sugar and coconut. OMG!!!! Its to die for. That's why when I go, I am there at 7:30am sharp as soon as they are open. The bread is HOT and MMMMMM so good. You walk in. Grab a silver pan and thong and start picking your bread. The Sugar bread is usually located on the top left corner and only cost $1 per bread. The Butter bread is located on the middle right and looks like sesame seed bread and only cost 50 cents each. You give them the pan and they bag up everything for you. If something u picked is in the back freshly taken out of the oven, they will tell u and give u some of those instead. I love this place.
