We used to come here all the time for the pineapple bun. Not because it the best tasting but it right next to our favorite boba place so while we're waiting for our boba we would grab a few pastries. The pineapple bun is decent and it'll do when we're craving one. Now the one star is for the lady behind the counter. My daughter has had several bad encounters with her especially when she goes alone. She has been craving pineapple bun over the summer so she'll take the bus there to buy some buns. It's a couple of bus stop away and she just started taking the bus so she asked if she can go get some boba and bun with the coins her grandfather gave her. She was almost in tears when she came back. The lady at the counter was so mean she not never wants to go back. It not like she was paying with Pennies. They were mostly quarters. My aunt picks up the cake and we refrigerate it until after dinner. The frosting on the cake crumbled off when it was being cut and had the consistency of feta. The fruits were not fresh and the cake itself was not spongy. This was the second time we had a cake that was not made fresh as promised. Sometimes you just want to sink your teeth into some nice hot buns. Pineapple buns that is! The pineapple buns here are kept warm unlike Sheng Kee. Donuts here too are cheap. I picked up a dozen donut holes for a friend, and a twisted donut for him with one of my pineapple buns was $3 and change. I tried a donut hole though, while I don't like super sweet donuts, I found that it could have used more glazing on it. The sauce is too salty and doesn't complement the sweet exterior. * Red bean twist bun: Served warm (yum). For some reason, there are very few sesame seeds on the bun. The smooth red bean paste is pretty sweet. It's a good, soft bun though, especially when it's warm as it was on Saturday morning. You get more bean paste and sesame seeds at Sweet Passions. The line moves quickly. Prices are a bit higher than average for Chinese buns and baked goods. There are plenty of seats but they're usually occupied by the regular Chinese customers. We usually go to the cafe bakery on Noriega, but they were not open yet, it was 6:35 am. This morning: we tried this place. WORST PLACE EVER. The coffee was a cheap blend of less than generic quality coffee grinds and the pineapple buns had no taste despite the fact it looked like the real deal. The service was horrible. We sat at the table next to the counter, there was a little coffee spillage on the floor. A woman walked into the shop and scowled at the spill and kept looking at us. She then went behind the counter and put her things down and got some newspaper and came out and started moping the spill with her foot and newspaper. All the while, she kept giving us a dirty look as if we were responsible for her miserable life. Firstly: if your job sucks it's not our fault. Get another job. It appears that the Chinese name of this uber old school bakery is "Fong Fong's Bakery", yet to non A$Ns, it's Donut Time. So not only does Fong Fong do donuts (about 1/3 of the bakery's display), but also cakes, and random pastries and buns. One can debate that this place is older than Cafe Bakery up the street (which other yelpers have said, have been there ages, so DT maybe ages + X years old). Just to keep up with the Ho' Ko' (HK) side of things, they also offer in the mornings the compulsory self pour coffee (you buy the cup essentially) or HK milk tea (looks rather suspect), to wash down your pastry with. Saw the BBQ pork bun, it looked like a giant fluffy snowball... And interestingly, they had some pre-made banh mi too which didn't quite seem to make sense. The majority of clientele here in the mornings look like the type that would line up 30 mins ahead for the early bird buffet by the retirement home. Either that or they also work in construction. When I was a kid, my dad always bought me BBQ Pork buns for breakfast...and I would complain! I wanted my typical waffles and pancakes...the typical American breakfast. But when I moved to San Diego for school...I started having Chinese bun withdrawal symptoms. When I go back to SF for the weekends, the first thing I'd want was buns from Donut Time! I've probably only been in here about 5 times throughout my life. But my dad, he comes here every morning at 7am for his coffee and buns. He usually gets me either a pineapple bun (gai may bao), bbq pork bun (cha seew bao), or the corn bun (sook mei bao). Those are my favorites...but they definitely have a lot of other ones as well. They also make birthday cakes as well. I just call them...chinese birthday cakes because I don't know how else to describe them! Those typical round or rectangular cakes with flowery frosting on the side that says "Happy Birthday _____" in red. You know what I'm talking about! This is actually quite confusing - because while it does sell donuts, they sell many different Chinese pastries and cakes. Maybe it's just confusing to me - because most Chinese bakeries usually have a more Asian bakery name. My parents call this "Fong Fong Bakery" but no where does Donut Time have the word Fong in it. My dad gets our birthday cakes from here. We ordered an 8" birthday cake ($14.50) for my sister here and picked it up on saturday. It was really good - typical Chinese cake with the whipped cream frosting, mixed fruits, and spongy cake. They have 3 layers of cake vs just two layers. It was decorated pretty nicely too - big strawberries on top with a slight chocolate drizzle. It didn't those giant colorful whipped cream flowers that no one eats anyway. This place is quite interesting, at first glance from outside you'd think This is your typical donut shop, well it isn't! I casually stumbled upon this place while walking my dog and I'm glad I did. Once you'll in you notice that the lady at the counter is very friendly, the counter is divided in two sections, one of which is Chinese style baked good and the other holds American style donuts and croissants. Now, I usually avoid almost all the eating establishments on Noriega, because they tend to be pretty shitty but when you need a quick fix donut, you're willing to take risks. Right? BIG MISTAKE!!! The first sign was when I saw all the Chinese contractors hanging outside. Now I've got nothing against those guys, but anytime I've eaten in a place that they frequent, it's been absolute shit and this place was certainly no exception.
