I had no idea that coming in for a restring of my pearls would end up in such a wonderful business relationship. Grace is absolutely amazing! She has been from my very first visit. She has always treated me with the utmost kindness and respect. She's such a pleasure to talk to and do business with. That said, I do feel compelled to share an observation regarding the uncomfortable level of attention I sometimes receive from some of the male police officers/security staff while shopping. On multiple occasions I've noticed prolonged staring and a sense of being closely watched in a way that I don't see directed toward other customers. It makes me feel uncomfortable and takes away from what would otherwise be a quite enjoyable shopping experience. In contrast, the female officers have always made the environment feel much more comfortable. One officer in particular, a Black woman with short, curly salt-and-pepper hair, goes out of her way to create a consistently welcoming atmosphere. She often greets me before the staff has the opportunity to, chats with both me and other customers, and, during slower moments, can usually be seen wiping down the display cases with a microfiber cloth to make sure they're clean and presentable for the next customer. These are small but meaningful things, but they make a discernible difference in the shopping experience. Now...Back to my pearls. During my initial visit, I brought in my necklace which had been horribly restrung by another jeweler. Honestly, it looked like a toddler did it. While, I waited for Grace to grab the paperwork, I took a look at some of the beautiful pieces they had available in the store. Grace informed me that they were running a special, offering an additional 20% off of all jewelry that month to celebrate the store's anniversary. After I completed the paperwork for my pearls, I mentioned to Grace that I was interested in upgrading my white gold and diamond tennis bracelet: I intended to sell my current one and purchase a new one. She gave me the information necessary for that transaction and gave me a specific day to return so that a gentleman named Andrew would have the opportunity to give me a price for my existing bracelet. I came back on the day that she recommended and brought some other pieces that I no longer wear as well. I ended up selling the pieces (for a bit less than I thought I would get), but after talking with Grace, I realize that another diamond tennis bracelet might not be the way to go. She asked me if I had any interest in yellow gold. I told her that I haven't worn yellow gold since I was a child and that it's just never been my thing. She told me that it would look beautiful on my skin given my complexion, and she brought out a set of gold necklaces that were not shown on the floor for me to try on. I had to admit... She was right. Based on the aesthetic I told her I wanted when I was planning to get a new diamond tennis bracelet, the pieces that she showed me aligned much more with my vision. Essentially the conspicuous detail of the craftsmanship was much more impressive (to me) than the "bling". I ended up leaving with a completely different bracelet than I expected, but every time I look at it, I'm so much happier than I ever was with my diamond tennis bracelet. When I came back to pick up my pearls, Grace showed me some other lovely pieces that they got in... which I'm also considering adding to my collection. I love that Grace took the time to truly learn and understand my aesthetic, as well as my rationale behind it, as opposed to just selling me the first shiny thing. After I purchased my new bracelet, she confided in me that she was really glad I didn't buy the diamond tennis bracelet I had my eye on, even though it was a more expensive piece, because this item, in her opinion, looked so much better on me. What started as a simple visit to get my pearls re-strung has become the foundation of a long-standing business relationship. I appreciate that I have one dedicated person that I can go to, who has taken the opportunity to get to know me, not just as a potential customer, but as a person and is able to make recommendations from that place. I don't think enough businesses understand or value the importance of that business relationship. I'm currently planning to purchase a few additional items (that I otherwise had no intention of buying) simply because I value this relationship, I want to support the business, and because Grace took the time and care to gently push me past my comfort zone and help me to evolve my aesthetic. I've already referred this business several times and I am looking forward to many more future visits and future purchases. read more

Go here if you want poor customer service, a complete lack of communication, and an unprofessional experience. I dropped off a family heirloom ring at King's Jewelry on July 31st, with a deadline of September 18th. Tari explained that she would try to have it completed by then, but couldn't guarantee the date because the jeweler making the ring was about to go on vacation for a week. I understood that things happen and was willing to be flexible. However, after several weeks passed, I reached out to Tari for an update. She never responded. I followed up again by email and was ignored a second time. It ultimately took my soon-to-be mother-in-law going into the store in person just to get an answer. Tari then stated that she had seen my emails but was "too busy" to respond. I was also informed that the jeweler had extended her vacation, yet no one thought it was important to communicate that to me as the customer. At that point, I requested that my ring be returned, which I have now received. What was most disappointing was the complete lack of accountability throughout the process. Even after everything that happened, there was no apology, explanation, or meaningful attempt to make things right. I had already explained that I have a photographer and proposal plans scheduled around my upcoming Navy orders, which made having the ring completed by my deadline particularly important. I needed clear communication and reliability, and unfortunately, I received neither. Thankfully, I was able to find another jeweler who could meet my deadline, offered a lower price, provided detailed mockups, and--most importantly--actually communicated with me throughout the process. If you're looking for a jeweler who is professional, accommodating, communicative, and reasonably priced, I would recommend checking out Elite Jewelers in Pentagon City instead and ask for Moustafa. Zero stars if I could. This experience was incredibly frustrating and completely avoidable with basic communication and professionalism. read more

Absolutely atrocious!! I honestly do not understand how this place has such good reviews. I needed my eternity wedding band rebuilt due to damage. I had to wait weeks for an appointment with the designer because she only works at the store one evening a week. At that visit, we were told that she had a good idea of what we wanted and to set up a follow up appointment a few weeks later to view the renderings she was supposed to do. When we arrived for that appt, she had done absolutely no drawings and didn't even have notes about what we had discussed at our first visit. That was the first red flag. The first meeting was in September, at which time we told Kings that we would be moving out of the area in December so we would like to have it NO LATER than early December. We were told 8 weeks from the 2nd appt, which was Oct. 3. After 15 weeks and NO COMMUNICATION unless it was initiated by me, it was all for naught. I never got my ring and had to pick up the loose stones and metal only to start all over with another jeweler. Unbelievably awful. If you want more details before deciding to use this place, read on. After 10 weeks, I hadn't hear anything back so I called to check on the progress. That proved to the first of far too many calls I had to make to light a fire under them to get this ring done. After 13 weeks, I called to remind them that I as leaving in a couple of weeks. I was told that the designer had a problem with the metal, but that that was resolved and I should have the ring soon. Another week went by with no communication. I emailed again to remind them of my impending departure and was told they would check with the designer again. The designed then emailed me saying she would have it completed in the next few days and would notify me when I could pick up the ring. That was Dec. 10 and I was leaving on Dec. 15. When I reminded her of that, she said the best thing to do would be for her to "dismantle" the ring and issue us a full refund. To make matters worse, when I offered them the option to mail the ring to me if it was close to being done if they would give me a discount on the balance of the ring, the manager flat out said no, she wouldn't do that and I should come pick up the stones/metal that day. This place is incredibly unprofessional, disrespectful and cannot deliver what they say they will. Steer clear!! read more

I've never left a bad review before. I know Yelp reviews can hurt small businesses, so I don't take this lightly. This business was extremely shady and dishonest. Everything they told me was resoundingly rejected by other jewelers. Not only did they quote a price well over double that of other jewelers, but they made it sound like a favor to me. They said the job would take about five weeks, when every other jeweler only need a day. They explained many flaws with my ring, which caused me to seek many opinions. I never heard anything like the lies this store told me. They had me so scared that my ring was poorly made, going to break and I could only trust them. I felt a lot of pressure to leave the ring right then for a free, more in depth estimate. It was so doom and gloom, and as it turns out, completely and demonstrably false. STAY AWAY!! I had an awful experience at King's. I brought my engagement ring in to be resized, got a fairly good (if a bit high) estimate and left it with them. I got 3 calls in the next week, each one saying additional charges had just been discovered, but explaining that lucky for me, each one was "on sale" so they were technically cutting me a break. Finally after the last call when the price had gone from $170 to over $450 I called to ask what was going on and the salesperson apologized for his "bad math" and said he had added an extra $100 to the total by accident. My husband bought quite a few things from here that I liked so I was more than eager to give them my business when I was in the market for a Tag watch for my husband's birthday. The sales guy showed me the watches he thought fit my description. He stated that it was the kind you shake to wind. A year later when we had to get it repaired & had moved from the area. A new jeweler told us that 1. This is a woman's watch & 2. It did not wind up by a shake of the wrist. I immediately contacted King's & their manager defended her sales person without any concerns for myself as a customer. All I wanted from them was a apology for their mistake! They misrepresented their product - why would my husband now want to wear this $1700 watch since it's really a woman's!!! I've had nothing but great experiences at King's Jewelry. I've gone in twice for watch repair and several times for watch battery replacement. Apparently my watch has a difficult battery to replace because another shop broke it while trying. King's Jewelry has never had a problem, has alway been super professional, and charges very reasonable prices. I also came in to get my ring finger sized and they were very helpful and attentive. We also got my engagement ring and other jewelry appraised with them and had a great experience with the appraiser. He was quick, courteous, and informative. I had previously made a small purchase and had some repair work done at King's, which is a very traditional, somewhat outdated, jewelry store centrally located on King St. in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. On both occasions, I dealt with a wonderful female sales associate (Katie I believe) who couldn't have been more helpful and kind. Because of this, when my daughter needed an appraisal done on two vintage pieces, I recommended King's. That same, lovely associate was there that day and couldn't have been nicer. Unfortunately, upon our return to pick up my daughter's rings today, the woman we dealt with this time was the antithesis of that first, lovely associate. She couldn't have been any more brusque or dismissive. If I had dealt with this second associate initially, I would not have returned to the store, nor would I have recommended it to my daughter. In this day and age, customer service is of utmost importance. This experience was such a reminder for me of how important it is for businesses to encourage their employees to treat all customers well. King's is a great little independent shop. I have always found the sales staff personable and knowledgable. Whether I was in the shop to replace my watch battery or shopping for a custom engagement ring, I was treated with the same degree of attention and politeness. My engagement ring (which they happily and quickly custom made) and many of my other favorite pieces of jewelry came from King's -- our wedding bands will as well. The staff is knowledgable and considerate to a thought - they even told us about an upcoming sale and sweetly recommended waiting until the sale started to purchase our wedding bands. While I enjoy supporting local, independently owned businesses over big, impressional chains (Jared's, Kay's, etc), prices still figure in my purchases. King's has always had the better price, the better service and the better selection. (Side note: they're clever and considerate, as well. My then-boyfriend had been in the shop a few times to design my engagement ring last spring. Suspecting this, I stopped in myself to look around. Last year I lost a stone in a ring I wear everyday. This custom piece of jewelry was made by a jeweler outside of Alexandria who was well out of their depth. After losing the stone, I decided it was finally time to have the ring completely redone by a jeweler I could trust. I'm pretty well connected to the majority of jewelers in the area and knew I wanted to have this project done at King's Jewelry. I met goldsmith Catherine to discuss the project. We spent months re-adapting the design, sourcing stones and unique metals, and going back and forth (primarily due to my indecisiveness and emotion) on the design. Catherine went above and beyond meeting with me in person multiple times, drafting multiple CADS, and answering no less than a gazillion questions. What made the project even more challenging was that the ring was one in a set of 6 identical rings so it not only needed to match the others, but fit a 4.75 size finger. Having only seen 1 of the other 5, Catherine rose to the challenge and created a piece of jewelry that met my EXTRAORDINARILY high expectations. Trust me, my expectations are nearly unattainable. If you are considering having a custom piece of jewelry made, purchasing something from their inventory, or having an item appraised - you should feel 100% confident that they are providing you lasting quality. Over the years, we have bought several pieces of jewelry there. Some for myself and some for my mid-20s daughter. Every time we go in, we find great uniques pieces that you can't find anywhere else.
