I really wanted to love this winery since it is so close to my home and a shorter drive to my home. The tasting room has a wonder outside seating area and the staff are friendly and attentive. My husband and I see this winery advertise an adult easter egg hunt event on social media. Sounded like fun and was 15$ per person and you get to hunt eggs with a prize in the eggs and 6 wine tastings. We arrived a bit earlier than are time slot because we thought we would have a bite to eat and a drink. We came into a small ma and pa kind of place which is nice, and it looks like someone's home converted into cafe. We checked in and it was mentioned we were early, and I had stated we had come early to get food and have a glass of wine. The server did not offer or say or suggest they had any food for sale but just ignored what I had said and offered no food. She sat us at a table with no menu and no drink menu. We sat and waited, and no one asked if we would like anything. So, we approached what you would call the bar area and when we explained we never been to this place before or a winery and would like some suggestions and a menu. We thought that they would be more helpful or have better customer service, but the lady was short with us not informational and wasn't forth coming about are 6 wine tastings and the cost of items. We felt awkward and embarrassed like they expected us to know what wine to order. The egg hunt was a joke, was told eggs were in the vineyard, we walked up and down vineyard and didn't find one egg. The eggs ended up being right off their front porch. We what was hoped to be a fun date turned out to be a long drive for a quick trip, waste of money 30$ to get one plastic egg with a crap prize and 16$ for a small glass a wine and no tasting and left hungry cause there was no food that I knew of. This place was neat for a laid back date night. We went because the Portland Astronomy Club had a free event here and we were able to see Venus, Mars and Saturn that night via telescope. The tasting room is very small and at second glance you realize it used to be a small house on the property. Its small and quaint and could use a little updating, but at the same time it has a feel like your standing in a kitchen of a family friend that wasn't to hear about your day and have you try their wine. I like wine, but I'm not a big wine drinker. I stay more along the tones of semi-sweet to semi-dry. I wasn't a fan of any of these wines at all. I found them all to be very harsh for my taste. Others at the tasting really liked them, so it could easily just be my preferences. The vineyard is a nice area for a stroll. with rolling hills. A nice place to order a glass of wine and sit and drink it. Just remember to bring your lawn chair. read more

I am no wine connoisseur. And at first glance, neither is Darin Ingram, King's Raven's winemaker and estate events coordinator. He reminds me of my father...a quiet and humble man clad in a waterproof jacket and baseball cap. He runs his weekend wine tastings out of his garage, on a small fold-out table with a plastic gingham-print tablecloth. He's the opposite of pretentious, and it shows in his wines. The estate is almost unnoticeable--off miles of curvy country backroads far away from the suburbs of Oregon City--marked only with a small wooden sign bearing their spread-winged eagle crest. It's a muddy Sunday afternoon when we find the place, and about 15 minutes before they're set to close tasting for the day. Several of the other wineries had closed early. Even though the grapes have not yet fully blossomed, the view is incredible. Hill after rolling hill of green, fragmented only by a few cows in a far-off field that Darin is caring for. You can tell that it's amazing during the summer. And there he is...standing behind the little folding table, offering free shot-sized samples of his favorite wines. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay...and then he really shows his expertise when he recounts the entire history of their organic Marechal Foch (a man who was pompous enough to think he could make wine better than everyone else...and he was right), the clear winner of that tasting [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marechal_Foch]. Indeed he exuded humility, but in order to create a memorable wine, you've got to know what you're doing, and he definitely does. We ended up staying several minutes after their official close, and he told us that during the summer they host events like family movie nights and weddings. He told us to come back when the weather's nicer. He was sincere. As we were about to leave, he began to wave goodbye, and then he quickly came to our car's window. My cousin had purchased a bottle of the Marechal Foch, but Darin came to our car with a partially drunk corked-up bottle of the same to tell us to take it, that we were the last of the tasters for that day, and that it was his gift to us. He reminded us to put it in the back of the car because of the open-bottle laws. It's this sort of hospitality, humility, and kindness that makes you pray--even if business is slow--that people like Darin succeed. read more

This is a cool place. Family owned since the 40's, Kings Raven produces a variety of whites and reds that are all quite good. Special mention goes to their exceptional Marechal Foch and Leon Millot. Darin led us through each wine and did an incredible job telling us the story of the beautiful land, the vineyards, and the wines. Please note that this is not a stereotypical Sonoma-Clone winery stop; this place has the organic feel of a working agri-business. Uniquely genuine, uniquely Oregon. This winery is pretty close to where I live, and when I saw a star gazing event there I thought that was a great idea. We started with the wine tasting. I tend to like dry Bordeaux types of wines. The whites were not what I liked at all. However, the reds were much better. I liked the Marechal Foch the best. We bought a bottle while watching the stars. Rose city astronomers had telescopes there and they were amazing. Great event to have there and a great venue. Beautiful views and vineyard. This is my favorite hidden gem winery in the Portland area. It is the only place I have found serving Marachel Foch in Oregon, although I was told there were several. I went on a solo tasting adventure. The lady working behind the counter wasn't the typical pourer but she knew so much, and we both have human service backgrounds so we talked a lot about social work. The wine was incredible. One of the things that initially grabbed me was that this is not an estate where you pull up and it looks like a grand castle. When you pull up you might think, "They make wine here? Is it any good? Should we bail and go somewhere else?" Just park and walk around back, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Since we went during Harvest and visited this on a weekday, we had the place to ourselves and the family was busy. They left Granddad in charge of the tasting room. The tastings were way too small. For a smaller winery in a house (!), the pours were not generous and did not inspire us to buy any bottles of wine to go, or to stay in and relax. The service was very awkward. She was not friendly and she just wanted us out of the store. Even after telling her that we had a very special occasion after this tasting, she gave small pours and was not personable. We had to ask for more for the tastings and she acted very weird about it. It's a decent winery. The tasting fee is reasonable and the location is great. I love family businesses and love to support that. They have several evening events, so it's obvious they care about their clientele and want them to have a good time and to keep coming back. We haven't been to an event yet, but we will. King's Raven, a small family-farmed vineyard set on a hillside overlooking a portion of the Willamette River valley and Pete's Mountain, is a hidden gem located within minutes of Portland. We had a lovely afternoon tasting the flight, enjoying the scenery and learning their history from winemaker Darin, his wife Taneha and Darin's Dad, David. If your palette leans toward off-dry wines, then you must plan a visit (they do have a lovely Gewurtzraminer for those with a sweet tooth/palette). I appreciate that they grow several less common varietals - Phoenix, Leon Millot, Marechal Foch and Chelois. With Darin's magic, these grapes turn into some really great wine. The location is very nice, which is the only positive thing I have to say about this wedding venue. Here is one wedding goer's experience: We arrived and proceeded to find a parking space. An old man came to our car and began to angrily tell us that we could not park where we parked. I was not upset that we needed to move the car, but the way he was behaving right off the bat was surprisingly rude and unnecessary. I asked him if he was the owner and he said that he was. This was our first introduction to this place. After the wedding, there was not enough tables for all of the guests. There were 8 of us just standing there with our plates and nowhere to sit. Further, because the utensils were only at the tables, there were no utensils for us. When we went to try and find a place to sit we asked if we could get utensils. One of the women who was serving was, again, super rude to another woman in our group about the fact that we needed to find non-existent silverware at the tables. I asked if it was possible for another table to be added, no was the answer. We ended up having to sit about a football field away from everyone else at the reception on the ground! I am not even kidding! I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone I know, and I certainly would never return here. Get your act together, King's Raven. People pay a lot of $$ to have their weddings at your venue. Surely you can do better than this for their guests! read more

Our visit to King's Raven was fine but nothing to write home about. My concern is that the wine we bought had turned. We have opened 2 of the 3 bottles we purchased and they were both completely undrinkable, fizzy with moldy corks. I have sent emails to King's Raven to give them an opportunity to make this right but I have not heard any response. I will not be purchasing any more wine from King's Raven. read more

I just had my first chance to visit Kings Raven winery on a post Thanksgiving wine adventure. We decided to try wineries closer to home looking for that "little gem" hidden from general view. KR was our 2nd winery of the day. What a disappointment. I don't know whose idea it was to mix the sale of scented candles & such with the sale of wine but they should have discussed it with somebody first. It is impossible to judge a wines "nose" when the all pervasive, cloying scent of said candles permeate everywhere. Or is it deliberate? I took my wines outside to get a true sense of the bouquet, it didn't help. The wines were very ordinary. Unbalanced & clumsy the wines taste like an amateurs first attempt, yet this winery has an extensive provenance for this area.
